This shop has exactly the kind of stern-looking owner you would expect from a European grocery store. You may feel tempted to thank him for accepting your money, but beneath the tough exterior he seems to have a good heart. The store offers a great variety of high-quality Eastern European products, including a strong selection of meats and dairy. Prices have gone up quite a bit recently, but that is probably unavoidable given inflation and the fact that the store is a bit farther from the main cluster of New York-area shops. There is an older lady that either works there or owns the place that is extremely rude and unfriendly. I was there today and she was behind the counter, I asked her about one of the cold cuts they had in their showcase, she stared at me for a few second and then she said It's veal, so I politely thanked her, but she again just stared at me and then rolled her eyes. I have never seen anybody interact with their customers like that. If it wasn't for her age, I would've say something. Instead, I just turned around and left. The place looked nice, but It was almost empty while the Iranian grocery store and the Guatemalan restaurant in the same shopping center were very busy, and i think she is the reason. read more

Really nice variety of imported and specialty foods not available at the larger traditional grocery stores. It looks primarily russian, but they have greek cheese and polish kielbasa. They have a meat counter, offer fresh dishes, a small but nice wine selection, and a lovely selection of tinned fish. I tried a small refrigerated dessert cheese - a mango flavored dessert cheese coated in chocolate - with russian on the packaging - and it was absolutely fantastic. I visited the store with the intent to purchase ingredients necessary for cooking Russian cuisine. I was blown away by how helpful everyone was including the customer who helped me pick the ingredient! The store carries many variety of pickles, farmers cheese, sunflower oil, chocolates, deli meat, black bread perfect to eat with borscht, you name it, they have it. Additionally, I loved how clean and sanitary the store was. The aisles were also wide and merchandise were clearly displayed. If you are moved from NY or Boston don't judge it before you see others. European Delight has been around for about 6 years, but recently had changed management. The store offers a selection of eastern European goodies, such as snacks, cookies, meats, and other products, more heavily focusing on Russian delicacies. They also had a pantry shelf full of different individually-wrapped chocolates where you can buy in bulk. I tried some of their housemade pirojkis (beef & potatoes, chicken, and mashed potatoes), which came in a nice little bun - my favorite out of the 3 was the beef & potatoes one, filled with well-seasoned ground beef and cubed potatoes. So, we go to this place frequently. We like their meat cuts, their prepared foods, their grains, pickled items, beers, etc. Lots and lots of good stuff that I feel is a little expensive but not significantly. Anything imported that comes in a package, especially snacks, candy, etc has a chance of being long expired. We have bought expired goods here many times on accident. On the one hand, it makes sense that the imported candy/snacks is typically what is expired because they aren't as popular as the staple foods so are probably bought and refreshed/checked less. However, on the other hand, you have to be diligent about checking each label for expiration before purchasing, which I don't think should be the sole responsibility of the customer. It's not that big of a deal and we love the place so I still highly recommend shopping here but I wish they checked their stock more. read more

I have been going to this store for several years, not frequently because should drive from Silver Spring. The store is very clean and the customer service is excellent, very friendly to Russian and English speaking customers. It has almost everything you need from post Soviet countries. From bread and tea and finishing with Gergian wine. Good quality caviar. You can try it first to see if you like it. A lot of items from Caucasian regions, central Asia,Baltics. Large selection of meet, cheese and fish products. Huge traditional candy selection. All Russian stile grains, traditional juices and drinks,preserves and many many more! Check refrigerator section, yameee! Very good fresh baked goods as well. This is a pretty pricey store but I always end up buying huge amounts, just can not stop myself. Georgian cheese, pickled garlic, borodinski bread, sprats, house-made salads, pelmeny and vareniky (dumplings) - pretty much all the things you need to feel like you are in Odesa, Moscow, Kishenev, or Minsk again. Although the "other" Russian store in Rockville loses stars for surly or disinterested staff, European Delight staff greet you with a booming hello, in both Russian and English (just in case). They take the time to explain their products patiently, too. They earn their 5 stars!! When I paid for my smoked suluguny cheese, chechel, pickled garlic sprouts, and eggplant caviar, my host kindly gave me a chocolate bar as a gift. (He had also just given a small child a lollypop as I walked up.) What a great impression he made. Totally worth the trip around the beltway from VA!! read more

I keep going back to this place because I can't find a better Russian grocery store in DC area. Yet, like with any other Russian grocery stores you need to look at expiration dates (check for mold as well if bags of 'pryaniki', for example, are sitting too close to the wall). Individually wrapped chocolate candies are unfortunately overpriced ($10.99 /lb); I can get it for half as much in Brooklyn, but obviously I am not driving there. The cashier seemed nice. For now this store remains the only place for me where I can stock up for Russian parties. read more

The best place to get authentic food for Eastern Europe. I love the strudel with fruit and nuts, the rum cakes in the refrigerator, the cookies filled with chocolate and all the best meats and cheeses I have ever eaten. The jars of various foods from around the world that changes up a bit each week. There is always fresh polish sausage to choose from just hanging up for you to pick. The staff is friendly and helpful. They allow you to try out before you buy, to make sure you will like it. I have never has a single bad thing that I have bought. How do you review an ethnic grocery store where you clearly feel out of place? Well, I suppose it's always a good sign when you feel transported to another country (see Cornucopia on expectations for ethnic specialty stores http://www.yelp.com/biz/cornucopia-bethesda#hrid:Xi1M0MzDYm23_3asYBXFKg). First, what do the labels say? Very few things are in English so, given the character markings, I'd guess Russian (later confirmed by on-line research). This can only mean on thing - imported products. Also, most of the brand names aren't from US-based companies (e.g. General Mills, Kraft, etc.). Second, what are the interactions like with the people behind the counters? All of them are too busy speaking Russian to other customers and probably couldn't care less about us observers. Lastly, how likely would I have purchased something if I was in the market for Russian food products? Very Likely. I doubt that I'd find anything similar at Whole Foods, Giant, or Safeway. Overall, I'm very excited to find the European Bazaar because it introduced me to an entirely unknown food culture. Moreover, this many Russian's can't be wrong. In other words, ethnic specialty stores rely on a core constituency of immigrants from its native country, so to see so many native-speakers shopping here is a testament to European Bazaar's authenticity and quality. 4 Stars - Despite its name, European Bazaar is primarily a Russian deli, bakery, and grocery store. I been telling my Polish friend about this russian/eastern european store and we finally made a trip there. It seemed like they have changed management there used to be a huge baked section in the back of the store - all kinds of puff pastries with meat, sauerkraut and the sweet cheese. My friend was very impressed with the array of sausages, dried meat, cheeses, perogis, sweets baked goods and even desserts. She bought some childhood cookies, dried sausages and a polish beer called Lomza for me to try. It was potent! There was this sweet thing which happened to be a variation of marshmallow with several flavors I was so fascinated by it I was telling my friend and the nice gentleman who worked there told us we could try it if we wanted to he told us he would open one up for us. We felt bad but he was being a good salesman. I tried it and it was absolutely fabulous especially with some hot tea. Then he let me sample a variety of cold cuts - the beef salami was so good, I tried a pork product call koraj and a turkish beef salami called soujuk - I loved them all because they had a good flavor and are not as salty as the meat made here. The soujuk is a russian interpretation of the turkish meat and it's made more european style - it's got amazing taste! It's definitely worth the trip. The guy upon hearing that I love the pastry with sweet cheese which was not on the shelf - came back from the kitchen with a freshly baked one he was such a nice salesman. I ended buying two sauerkraut and two sweet cheese pastries. I also bought the marshmallow covered with belgian chocolate from him - it's called Zefir or something it's in russian. I bought a lot of other stuff - it didnt help too I went there after a happy hour. Everything tasted great though, honestly. Go check it out. It's a great store. read more

These are good, honest folks. They are friendly and hardworking. Some of the goodies are homemade and are of the best quality. Four stars for selection, minus one for price. I spent a year living in the Republic of Georgia, love Georgian food, and have been trying to find options in the DC area. This is the first place I've come across that sells Borjomi, a sparkling mineral water very popular in Georgia. They also sold several varieties of tremali, a sour plum sauce, jonjoli, a pickled herb, and varieties of Russian chocolates that often graced Georgian supras. This food is expensive, though--I paid nearly $18 for a six-pack of Borjomi. read more

Very good little deli. Fresh produce arrives every Tuesday, fish - Friday. Good selection of traditional rye bread. Standard selection of salami and cold cuts, good selection of cheeses. Fresh baked goods made daily. Pre-packaged fresh salads of Russian style, soups and hot dishes (cutlets, pilaf). Frozen pelmeni selection could be improved upon. A bit pricey, but that's to be expected for the small scale business like that. Service is helpful, just ask them for help. Overall - four stars. read more
