This community-minded market carries products from local vendors and offers unique products I haven't found elsewhere. I love the vegan Neapolitan cupcakes from Rubicon bakers, for example--not only is the frosting delicious these chocolatey small cakes have a filling which reminds me of the (not as healthy) classic Hostess cupcakes. The eggless egg salad wraps from the deli are also good. Other favorite products are the almond chocolate pudding and the Virginia honey roasted peanuts. I don't do my regular shopping here but love to stop in when I'm in the downtown Rockville area. There is a convenient parking lot and garage spaces dedicated to the store, always a plus. There is a small salad bar which looked well-maintained when I was last there (but did not try) and a coffee and juice bar (the latter I've only found so-so--my açaí bowl from a visit months ago wasn't good, but I've heard the chai is tasty). I think there are wine and cheese events also held at the coffee bar seating area. I love the small book section although I've not browsed there yet, The only thing I've found not consistently great is service at the cash register. Mostly the cashiers have been friendly but occasionally we'll get the few who don't seem to want to be there... Recommended for a visit at least once...! read more

My visit to Dawson's Market was a pleasant one - I loved how this place was set up, as all the produce and items were organized well, everything looked fresh, and the staff were all welcoming & friendly. I came to look for a particular product, which they had in stock - yay! The aisles were easily to navigate through, and I would love to spend a little bit more time to peruse through their items on the next visit! They have a surface and covered lot available for patrons, so just look for the specific signs. It's like the local grocery store for the Rockville Town Center. It's a bit eclectic. It's got a book store and also a bar. Before the pandemic grocery stores were on their way to become places to hang out and shop and Dawson's is one of them. Today they had a gentleman giving out samples of Awash Ethiopian coffee. I wanted to check out the beer aisle but I was a bit disappointed at the prices which were higher. I guess that's the price of convenience. I wanted to buy a pack of non alcoholic Athletic Brewing company beer. They had no price label on them and short of taking it to the checkout counter there was no way to get the price. Wow, it is like losing an old friend. I used to like shopping at Dawson's Market. They had a wonderful salad bar and wall of cheeses. The fruit was fresh and vibrant. You paid a little more, but you could appreciate the value in your items. Yesterday, I stopped by to pick up a few things. The salad bar was neglected and frankly, looked as if no one had touched it in days. I was afraid someone might get sick, if they were eating from there. I bought chips, green beans, lemons, and potatoes. The chips were so stale, they tasted like cardboard. The green beans were rotting inside the steam bag. I was so disappointed. My lemons and potatoes were fine. I had looked for Brie cheese, which is a staple cheese on a cheese wall....none to be found. I did find a nice prepackaged hummus, that was very tasty. The service at checkout was excellent. But, when I asked for a paper bag, I was charged 50 cents, for one bag. Seriously, 50 cents a bag? I am not sure if Dawson's Market was affected by all of the people working from home or that the management has not paid close attention to the condition of the market. I even spoke to the assistant manager to tell her my concerns. She said supply chains were part of the problem. But, I am doubtful that supply chains were the reason the salad bar was in despair. I will say their return policy was on point. I really hope that they start to make some much needed improvements. read more

This is honestly the only store I have gone into during these times - it is the only grocery store I trust. I know that they are cleaning everything often and their shelves are always stocked and if you don't want to shop for yourself, they have people dedicated to shop for you. You place your order and they will bring it to your car!!! They have completely transformed their indoor seating area into a staging area for their deliveries and pickups...it is quite impressive! But honestly they have taken every precaution you could imagine. Tape on the floor at the registers to separate you from the cashiers. Lines on the floor to help you navigate that 6 feet. They have pride foods still in the hot bar area but they are prepackaged now so you can walk in, get your meal, and be on your way. And don't forget they have wine and beer and cider and hard seltzer!!! They have everything and if you haven't tried the injera crisps and lentil dip...you are missing out on living your best life!!! Dawson's Market is a great market especially with the way they are handling the Covid-19 pandemic. I like there is dedicated parking spaces for Dawson's. They also provide contactless options: curbside pickup (for $8) and delivery if you place your order through their web site. Ordering process is pretty easy. They will email you when your order is ready for pickup. I call this place a mini Whole Foods as it carries many of the same brands. I was happy to see the place was fully stocked with protein such as organic beef and chicken which is hard to find these days. They also had a lot of toilet paper - Seventh Generation recycled toilet paper. It is also nice to shop for beer and wine in a grocery store which they have a good selection. Glad this place re-opened after it closed back in late 2018. We need to support these type of small local businesses instead of the deep-pocketed chain grocery stores. read more

Dawson's market makes dealing with a pandemic a lot easier. I had gone to Dawson's market on a few occasions and even took advantage of a groupon offer they had, but it wasn't the closest market to my house, so it wasn't a go to. Then the rona came into play. Every delivery service was booked solid or not available for groceries. It was getting too scary to actually go to the markets here (lots of people and I did not have PPE). Then through a Facebook group for MoCo restaurants I discovered that Dawson's Market had delivery and curbside pick up. I chose curbside pick up for $8. I have to admit their on line site to order is very clearly new. Sometimes the wrong item is in the picture description, like there is a picture of a pack of sausages and the description says Cauliflower for $2.99. I just go with what the description says.It usually takes about 8 hours for them to turn an order around and they call you when items are out of stock. The lady who does the shopping is so sweet. I was gonna cheer myself up with some flowers and ordered tulips, she picked out the best ones. When your order is ready you head over before 7pm, Monday-Saturday, and call to let them know you are outside the store. Someone will come out and load your car. No contact. The groceries are double bagged in awesome paper bags with handles. They have 3M masks and gloves and then they wave and you are off. I hope they keep up this service when this craziness dies down (maybe even add credit card tips for the staff as an option), even if they don't I am so shopping here on my way home. They have great bakery items and the cupcakes (caramel cupcakes especially) are fantastic. Prepared foods are always good here and the cheese shop is well stocked. Lots of organic/gluten free/specialty items to choose from. Right now their quick turnaround delivery/curbside pick up is a life/time saver. THANK YOU! read more

Small, locally owned business that carries a variety of produce, poultry, ready to eat meals, and other healthy food options. Dawson's has a small juice and coffee bar where you can order delicious smoothies and juices, or a crafted coffee. At this location they have a food bar, a small craft beer and wine selection, a book nook, and a small area of curated gifts. It's one of the only grocery stores that is walking distance for Rockville Town Center residents and personally, I enjoy the convenience of being able to walk there to grab a few items that I need based on my dietary restrictions and lifestyle. Although, what has been very disappointing has been the lack of customer service from the sales associates. I walked up to a register where I was serviced by an associate named Noah and asked if his register was open. He looked me up and down and responded to me in a condescending tone with the response -- "uh yeah". It was an awkward transaction and it wasn't the first time I was taken aback by a sales associate's negative attitude. I had similar interactions with sales associates at the smoothie bar who look at you without greeting you, pretend not to see you at times, and are visibly annoyed to be servicing you. I love supporting small businesses versus going to larger big box grocery stores, but customer service makes or breaks your experience. I rather take the drive to Whole Foods or Mom's Organic Market for a more positive experience. read more

OK, first I have to disclose that I do live right across the street from this market so there's that. Convince aside,I love this place. Definitely on the higher end of the cost spectrum, but the food here is fresh and really good. Kinda tastes like my youth when Mom made dinner,tear in my eye. When it comes to the same thing every day, maybe not so much here that's why I like it. It's not a place to buy bulk. It's more like the corner French store you hot up for fresh food on the way home from work. Oh, and go ahead and pick up a bottle of wine or a craft beer. Yup,they got it. I wanted to update my review to highlight Heidi the Natural/Wellness Manager. I've been back & forth with facial products due to the cold elements as it really hindered my face pretty harsh this season. She is very knowledgable & insightful with the products. She is very transparent with her opinion on products she personally uses & on the flip side, will take the time out to research other products especially in alignment of my needs. When she is not working she has a great employee (pretty young) named Christian. I stated young as I was very impressed with his knowledge. He picks up where Heidi leaves off with his skill set & eagerness to seek products & samples that may be beneficial. The only "light" negative is the employees that may not be well versed for that department. They provide incorrect information & are not as proactive in assisting. Yet it's all about trying to extend good customer service which ultimately is the important factor. Side plug, Dale the Manager is a great element of Dawson's Market as he always greets me by name...hopefully that's a good thing & I'm not wearing out my 2-3x weekly visits :-) Go see Heidi for any of your natural & wellness needs & then pick up a fresh piece of Vegan Carrot Cake...happy face/happy stomach. I just want to give a big shout out to Dawson Market for my Holiday order I made for Christmas Eve. My reason for this post is because I had a odd day with getting all the food I ordered home. When I picked up the food, a very nice gentleman named Michael brought the box out and told me to make sure to hold the box of food from the bottom. Well my husband was definitely holding the box from the bottom, while entering our building, my 1 year was screaming and my husband just slightly move his hand and things came crashing down. The Mac & cheese container ripped in half, stuffing flew out of the container and Brussel sprouts everywhere. I was so upset and sad all at the same time. My husband salvaged the ham, mash potato, tomato soup, rolls, gravy and apple pie. Crazy how the liquid containers stayed in place. My husband told me to call Dawson but was crying and told him our Christmas was ruined. He insisted I call and to explain what had happened. So I got myself together and called. I got Michael again and while explaining I started to cry. Michael or Mike was so understanding and told me not to worry and will see if those sides where still available. The Mac & cheese and stuffing was available but Brussel sprouts weren't. Michael did replace it with green beans and I was totally okay with that. My husband went quick to pick it up, once he arrived we heated everything and the food was amazing. Thank you to the chefs and big thank you to Michael or Mike you were so awesome and very understanding to my situation. I definitely will order again and I have always loved shopping at this store. Rockville... is not the finest location for a market, but, it's alright. This is probably why I have to credit this place for 5 stars. Despite reviewers like John B. praising this market, I had to go here to believe it. Yes, it is a great market. You can park for an hour for free in the lot or parking structure. This is convenient because it it right on the edge of the hopping part of Rockville. Then, when you go inside, you are greeted by produce specials in front of you and if you look left, the cashiers, the seating area for gnoshing and the juice and coffee bar. Continue inside and you will find many places upon which to set your sights- produce, bulk, beverages, salad bar, snacks, prepared foods, ice cream, grains, and whatever else your mouth and stomach desire! So many choices! My favorites are the local and sale priced fresh produce. Amazing that they can keep so much local, and also, affordable. Although the produce section is a small part of the store, it has a great variety. Also, it is nice that in their in-house prepared foods area they label what is vegan. They have gluten- free items, too. A juice and coffee bar?! My two fav beverages! Yum! If I lived closer, I would go far more frequently. I used to walk to this place every now and then and they used to give a tiny discount if you walked to their location, but they have since stopped that. Now, I drive and it is great that they do provide the first 2 hours free in their parking lot. I like coming to this place for their healthy choices and it also allows me to try other things as well including a Blondie Brownie and Snickerdoodle cookie (not sure those last 2 are healthy). The different things I have tried and like in this grocery are: Fruit Bar - they have strawberries, grapes, cantaloupe, oranges to name a few, along with a Salad Bar. I actually prefer both to the Hot Food Bar Smoothies - I love the Almond Brother - very delicious Freshly made hot sandwiches - So far I have only tried one which is the Capital Panini ($7.99) - house-smoked turkey, tomatoes, avocado, fresh cilantro, Havarti cheese and a jalapeno remoulade sauce. Initially I thought it would be spicy due to the sauce, but I got an opportunity to taste it and have enjoyed it ever since. Cupcakes - I recently got one of their Fresh Strawberry Cupcakes ($2.49) w/Strawberry Vanilla Buttercream Icing. I read some of the ingredients in the cupcake and it looked healthy (unsalted butter, safflower oil, unbleached cake flower to name a few), but it was also delicious in tasting...Yummy! - I would like another. Outside of those items, I have also bought actual grocery items like fresh cashews (cashews are expensive anywhere you buy them), Bai juices (I had initially tasted these at the Yelp Lucky Party), and Cakelove Cake in a Jar (this was the only thing I did not like as it tasted like the cake was screaming to be taken out the jar). Dawson's just celebrated their Grand Opening today and I stopped in to check the place out & grab some lunch. I was really impressed overall! They're a smaller-scale healthy grocery store that offers a great selection of organic, vegan, etc. They have a decent variety of cheeses, wines & other gourmet items as well. Their prepared foods section is fabulous! The prepackaged food items are labeled well which I really liked. The store was designed well; nice layout & easy to navigate around the store. They validate parking too :) What more could you ask for, really? They're located in the heart of the Rockville Town Center which is convenient for those living in the area that don't want to drive down Rockville Pike to Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, etc. Plus, like I mentioned.. they sell wine if you're into that sort of thing which makes them a one-stop-shop :) I'll definitely be back. read more

I'm so glad to see the other reviews about how great Dawson's has been during the pandemic. I shopped here every day (sometimes more than once a day) during my last business trip before the pandemic, in early February. I was at a conference and saw that I could count on Dawson's not just for groceries and snacks, but also coffee (a real coffee bar with breakfast options), as well as hot meals. I got a wonderful dinner from their hot bar one of the nights I was in town. Great local and sustainable options (and YUMMY options!) for things like dairy, produce, meat, etc., as well as a nice little bulk section (including bulk teas!). Oh yeah, and the souvenir I got for people that was the biggest hit was the delicious Virginia peanuts that Dawson's sold. If I'm ever in the area again after this clears, I'll be sure to return. read more

The store stocks unique products that the other big natural food stores do not with a big emphasis on "local."The coffee bar barista makes a great cup of coffee. The wine selections are really good. The burger, sausage, chicken offerings are top notch. Need a bouquet of flowers they got you covered. The desserts are excellent. Try the new Chevy Chase frozen pizza-it's yummy. 5/21/20 When I use to live in the appartment across from the public library, I use to go to this store a lot. My girlfriend at the time also enjoyed being able to walk over there when i was at work to get her lunch or dinner. The organic food choices were helpful too. I can't really say we ate in the store to offten, but when we did it was always a treat. I meantioned this area in my novel with a character who also lived where I did. I don't know what the hours of this place are now, but when I was there it was open 24 7. Still, this store has a lot to offer, even if it looks small from a distance, it's not. Nice neighborhood market that carries both organic and non-organic brands. Employees are very friendly and willing to lend a hand. There is large seating area near the coffee/juice bar with tables and chairs. Parking is fairly easy with free 1 hr meter parking on the surface lot or free 2 hr garage parking with validation. They seem to be very active in the Rockville community, hosting events for local groups. Even my kid's school had a "dine out" night (PTA fundraiser) here last Fall. Hope they continue to do these things and other local events as this really distinguishes them from the other chain grocery stores nearby. read more

When we moved from Boston to live near Rockville Town Square last year, we had low expectations of chain grocery stores that we would have to drive to and that didn't interact with the community. I am glad to say Dawson's Market proved us hilariously wrong, and we count ourselves lucky to have such a store within walking/biking/public transit range. We were dimly aware of Dawson's when we were looking for a place to live in/near Town Square, but were amazed the first time we walked in the store on our house hunting trip. We decided to live nearby partially for access to the store and larger Town Square development. When Dawson's announced their closing 2 days before we moved, we were pretty crestfallen, and in trying other stores such as Giant, Aldi, Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, etc. etc. the closest analog we found was Wegman's in Germantown, but it was too far away. I was shocked and glad to hear that Dawson's re-opened with Bart in charge, with support from the county and property developer behind them. I can see why some people that don't shop at the market regularly see it as not worthwhile, but there are enough people that think Dawson's really anchors Town Square (including the important stakeholders). The closest thing to direct competition is Mom's Market, but they don't offer nearly as much other grocery items. It's a real rarity and a privilege to have all of these items in one trip: Organic produce (save a trip to Whole Foods) Local meat and seafood (more so than Mom's market) Local Produce (trip to Farmer's market) Local craft goods (not under one roof) Local coffee businesses (trips to markets and individual coffee roasters) Local canned beer and growler fills (trip to local breweries or liquor stores) GT's kombucha on tap (maybe Whole Foods - check me on that) Fresh sandwiches and house-made food (visit to chain restaurant) Coffee Juice and Smoothie bar (visit to another juice store) Various bulk items (dry food, spices, tea, water, coffee, beer, kombucha) Community events, monthly Jazz Brunch, Local Craft market, etc. Pop-up childrens' and young adult bookstore (few local bookstores in MoCo) Pop-up used vinyl records (also few stores, limited availability) Free compost bins (had to visit MoCo county gov't offices when Dawson's was closed) Many local businesses get their start selling at Dawson's Market, so there is always something interesting and surprising every visit. If one's tipping point to going to a larger chain grocery store is Wonderbread or Soda etc. Dawson's does actually respond to specific item requests from customers -go to the customer service desk and ask about it! Find parking in the designated lot, use an electric scooter, bicycle, or good old feet and make your way to the best GREEN market in Downtown Rockville Town Center area. Your feet may be your only carriage, but you've got to push on through. Wide variety of organic, gluten-free and ethically sourced and fair trade groceries, ethical health and beauty items, lovely eco-conscious health and sanitation items, and vast assortment of delightful, locally made, locally grown, ethically produced products--from make up that is actually GOOD for your health and your skin, to delightful cheeses, vegan options, you name it...you will LOVE IT HERE! Sometimes a tad bit pricey options to meet almost any diet or faith path, but we MUST CONSIDER THE SOURCE and also remember that Fair Trade and Ethical means a higher end point price for the consumer due to fair wages, ethical trade, transportation, fair wages for management AND employees, etc, etc, ad nauseam, Ad Infinitum. The first time this market was in business I didn't find it the right fit for the town center. It is not a full feature grocery store and most items generic or private labels. Not a cheap place to buy food. This was the main reason they had to close late last year. I was completely against the city of Rockville giving this grocery store $400,000 to return with a promise of additional monthly payments to secure their stay. The grocery itself remains fairly empty and still haven't improved what made them fail to begin with. I hope that the city will cut their losses and allow a 7-11 or some other food store move into that space. read more

Dawson's Market's existence in Rockville is so important that they were forced to re-open due to the collective sadness*. So far, open under new ownership (Dawson's old manager) seems to be going well. My previous two gripes with Dawson's seem to have been dealt with. Before, the bakery's breads were not as good as I expected from them, and fruit and veg stands often had some rotten pieces laying out. So far so good. I'm loving the baguettes (there's a twisty one with sesame that is great) and the fruit and vegetables are looking good. More changes: apparently under new ownership they will also be expanding the selection to include more non-organic goods as well. Other reasons to love Dawson's: - always friendly - they sell beer and wine, which is insane that this is bragging rights. MoCo control over liquor/beer/wine is ridiculous but whatever. Regardless, Dawson's beer and wine selection is great. - for a small grocery store they have great selections across the board, be it milk substitutes (here's where I plug OATLY), vegetables, veggie burgs, chips, whole-bean coffee. - salad bar, sushi bar, and hot food! - small bar with beers on tap - and, lots of involvement with the community Glad to have you back, Dawson's!
