You know how sometimes you head off to the market for one or two items but, as you roam around, you end up seeing all sorts of tempting things that manage to make their way into your shopping basket? Well, that's exactly what happened today during my trip to Asadur's, a great local Mediterranean market with a wide variety of hard-to-find products, all in one place. Being Greek, it was great to see many of the classic Greek brands on the shelves - Papadopoulos cookies, Misko pasta, Kalas salt, Minerva olive oil, Venizelos coffee, Ion chocolates - the list goes on. There's also a fully stocked section of spices found in traditional Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cooking, with many of the spices that are used sparingly in Greek dishes available in small quantities. I really like this, as I can buy the spices I need fresh, and that makes a big difference in flavor when you're cooking. The cheeses in the cheese case are always fresh and high-quality, including a great kasseri, a sharp kefalograviera, and what I originally went in for: Dodoni feta, the best Greek feta cheese around. Its soft, creamy texture makes it both a great table cheese and an excellent ingredient in dishes like a good home-made spanakopita. Finally, the staff at Asadur's is quite friendly and happy to help you find what you need. I have been going to this place for years, and it has gotten increasingly more and more expensive. A recent experience: Bought 3 Liter Minerva Horio Extra Virgin Olive Oil at Asadur's. Price $68. Ordered the exact same thing for a family member from Amazon a few days ago: Price $49.20 with free shipping. We are not talking about a few dollars here; it's about $18 more! I wish I had checked the price before I bought it. My fault. But I will not go back there again. read more

Located inside a strip mall, Asadur's Market is a single-room Mediterranean market with a deli in the back that serves gyros and other favorites. Popping in on a Monday for lunch, I ordered the chicken gyro for under $10. Within minutes, I was enjoying it in my car. The chicken is well cooked, and the pita is soft and packed with flavor. We've been enjoying some of the Mediterranean markets in the area. We had a little trouble finding Asadur's. The address is Randolph Road but it's tucked away in a strip shopping area that includes MoM's market off of Nebel. Asadur is small but has some interesting items. I found artichoke hearts in the freezer case. I've seen them mentioned in many recipes but never have seen them in the store before. Richard couldn't resist the baklava. He also picked up a can of calamari in garlic sauce and one of stuffed grape leaves. Asadur has small selection of wine and beer, which I haven't seen in other markets we've visited. Must note the woman who was sitting at the register and checked us out never said a word to us. Asadur is so close to some larger, well stocked Mediterranean markets, though there's nothing particularly wrong with it, we probably wouldn't go back. read more

I stopped by specifically for Turkish products and found the store to offer a lot more than just Turkish goods. There were even bakery items available for purchase in addition to traditional Mediterranean cheeses and olives. The store carried a lot of Greek products as well. The older woman handling the cash register was kind and patient. She was not too talkative, but I am sure she would have answered any questions I would have asked. Parking is ample, free, outdoor, and right outside. This store is located in the same row as My Organic Market (MOMs Rockville). read more

A helpful person I know was helping me clean out my car and in their frenzy of throwing things out (good bye Shakira CDs!!) they picked up the evil eye I kept in my car and said: Helpful person: Do you really need this clutter in the car? Me: It's for luck, you've seen me drive. Helpful person: Yup, I will leave that there then. My point is,if that helpful person had thrown out that evil eye, I would have easily replaced it with the funkier ones they have here. They even have ones that are clog shaped like little Holland souvenirs. Having a display of evil eyes is one way of knowing a middle eastern market is legit. As you move further into the market you will find everything you need for fine Mediterranean cuisine. Two gallon bucket of feta? Got that. A can of shark sardines? Yes, and what are shark sardines? Bulgur Wheat? Yes. Pickled Lebneh? I had no idea you could do that but it's here. Greek Wine? Yes. Turkish teksut? Yup, no clue what that is A large olive bar? Yup A wall of tea biscuits? Yup Turkish/Armenian pastries? Yup The hard sesame candies that I grew up with and cost me a fortune in dental bills? Yes So the store has a large selection of Middle Eastern and Turkish products, it's awesome, but that's not what I want to draw your attention to. I came into this store cause I was waiting on car repairs nearby (which means the evil eye in the car is defective) and did not want to spend $15 on a hippy dippy lunch next door at MOM's Organic Market. So seeing the sign for deli I walked in here. Yo, this place has $5 gyros. That's right. Subway has their $5 footlong and this place has a $5 gyro that is probably one of the best I've had in the area. The meat is in strips and obviously not off a spit, but for the price, it's actually good. The falafel is pretty awesome too. The greek salad ($7) is not a bad lunch deal either. Now that I know where this little market is hidden, I may be back for lunch or more evil eyes, depending on how this car repair goes.. read more

I love this market. It has a lot of the Mediterranean ingredients that I struggle to find anywhere else. A large variety of breads, pickles, olives, cheeses and Arabic sweets. It also has speciality items like lupini beans, Greek oregano, Ahmed tea, Molokhia (Arab spinach), ringa (smokes herring), and sujuk (beef sausage). Besides the great variety of foods they offer this store is always super clean and well organized. They have great customers service and are super helpful. I highly recommend checking this place out. They also have fresh baked goods and snacks like falafel. But don't take my word for it check this place out. read more

You know how when you walk into a specialty food grocery and the store has That Smell? I'm telling you, this place almost didn't have any. That in itself blew my mind away. My dad is infamously horrible about making appointments. He'll aim to get places at a certain time then show up half an hour late. The boy's dad has even said, "I've never met a more hastily organized, unpunctual Asian." And it's true! So when he called and said, "Hey let's have a family lunch out, meet there at 10:30," I got there at 11 and still beat him by 20 minutes. "Oh just walk around Staples for a bit!" Not being too terribly into office supplies, I opted for the interesting looking market at the other end. I wasn't planning on getting anything... until I saw the tinned octopus. My guy laughed when I nerded out. "Do you see that?! Oh my god! It's octopus in a tin! And look! Squid in a can! WHO THINKS UP THIS STUFF I'M IN WEIRD FOOD HEAVEN" And it was all downhill from there. I also ended up getting some of the walnut baklava, tiramisu dry mix, a box of jelly candy things, and half a dozen ground spices I'll try to incorporate into a curry... sans octopus and squid, of course. Wouldn't recommend any of the above besides the ground spices though. Friendly staff, greets their regulars. Plenty of parking shared with the rest of the plaza. If it weren't so dang far out I'd plan to come back often. It seems like a neat place with interesting food (and I'm talking the beeswax in honey, not the Costco bomb shelter jugs of olive oil or kalamata olives). This little Mediterranean market lacks style, but can fix your craving for Kalamata olives or dolmads. I like to buy Kasseri cheese from the deli counter in back. You never know when you might crave some flaming cheese. Opa! I wish they had fresh- made spinach pie or tyropitas. They have them in the freezer case only. On Saturdays they often have baked goods. The guys who work here are friendly, but on my last visit there was just one lady working and she didn't even get off her chair until I asked her for something from the back case. Gotta stop in every few months to restock my Turkish and Greek pantry. Really decent selection of frozen veg and yufka/phyllo, cheeses, olives, some cured meats (no sucuk last time I visited, but I've gotten it there in the past), spices/herbs and baking ingredients, coffee and tea, and a really nice selection of bulk grains, legumes and flours. It's a decent but small Mediterranean food market. Their selection of cheeses and chickpea-based products is a significant part of their inventory, so plenty to work with from a vegetarian angle. That being said, it's surrounded by a variety of other grocery stores and smaller markets, many of which have very good selections of the sorts of items they carry here. The hummus I got there was uncommonly thick in texture and tart in taste; I liked their garlic version better and either way it was as good as I've found for the price. There were some other good items; notably frozen falafel and some nice fluffy pitas. Their freezers are definitely extra cold, which is also a good thing. They have both imported and local goods. I like it as an add-on to other grocery shopping; pop over after MOM's Organic Market in the same shopping center, or one of the other stores nearby. read more

Great hummus in the fridge case (I prefer the plain, though I served some of the garlic a few weeks ago and it got rave reviews). Homemade (also in the fridge case) Tzatziki is very fresh and tasty. I usually pick up a piece of the "barrel feta" from the deli counter and they'll happy to give you some brine to keep it in - the packaged white cheeses are also a good choice. They have a wide variety of dried beans - this was one of the few places that had giant white (gigante) beans available in the early days of covid when everyone was sold of out of beans. read more

Very impressed by this top notch little market that boasts a surprisingly large selection of Mediterranean food. Very clean, well organized, and friendly store. Great selection of beans, lentils, grains, pasta and couscous, herbs and spices, tea, juice, cheese, olives, artichokes, peppers, oils, vinegars, wine, pastry, cookies, flat breads, and much more. I especially liked how they offer house-packaged options for beans, lentils, spices, and herbs at great prices. I've been going to this place for years and have never been disappointed. I first came on the recommendation of a Greek friend, after complaining that I could never find fresh filo in the regular grocery stores. Not only is the filo here always fresh, they sell it in various grades of thickness. Super delicate for baklava and nice and sturdy for spanakopita. The olive oil they sell here was an education. That artisanal extra virgin olive oil I was shelling out for at Whole Foods doesn't even come close to the (much more affordable) canned oil that I get here. It's delicious and even smells earthier and greener. The homemade hummus, fresh feta, labne, halvah, etc is delicious. And you can't beat their prices on spices. Check out the various types of zaatar. Great on chicken. I also really appreciate being allowed to roam the aisles at my own pace without being bothered. At the same time, if I've had questions, the storekeepers have been helpful and full of good suggestions. read more

I couldn't be happier to have discovered an authentic Armenian market. Drove an hour to get here and would be glad to do it again. I was looking for a market that sold authentic Greek products and asked my Greek friend who sent me here. I heard mixed reviews about this place so I decided that I need to go and see. This place is not visible from the street and is small. It's definitely a type of place you can easily miss, but inside how all authentic Greek and General Middle Eastern goodies like from Lebanon. I went straight to the back and bought some feta cheese that was around $8 for a pound and some olives that had a varied range of prices. They only had one tzatziki brand which was their own homemade and would of wanted more options. I also ended up with bread, seasoning, and pomegranate molasses yummm. Literally this place would be 5 stars but they don't sell any meat, Boo. But the people were not mean as some of the past reviews said and it was a pleasant shopping experience. 4 solid stars! read more

I just wrote a review for another place I use all the time, now I'm doing the same for Asadur's. I have been an Asadur customer for many years. The ownership changed a few years ago, and the store changed very little, meaning consistently good, with some improvements. The #1 thing for me is the cheese and olives. The best. You can't compare the feta and olives at places like Whole Foods to what you get here. This is the real deal. Big selection of olives, and the lady behind the counter can tell you the story of each olive. I happen to like the Kalamata's. Same with the cheese: several types of feta, you can even taste them, and do talk to the lady behind the counter for her recommendations. Are you using the cheese in a salad? With wine? We happen to like the Greek Barrel Feta, originally recommended by the previous owner for use in chopped salads. But there are others. Then the #2 thing is the availability of middle eastern specialty foods. Different size kernels of bulgur wheat, for example, and very reasonably priced spices. If you are making anything Mediterranean, you must make a stop here. Then the #3 and #4 are the fresh sandwiches and the selection of wine and sweets. I have only purchased a sandwich (falafel) once, it was very good. I see many others who purchase sandwiches regularly, so Asadur's is doing something right. I similarly only bought wine once, a Lebanese red, it was excellent. A bit of a novelty, the price was high enough that I have many other choices of excellent wines, and it was fun to try something unusual. I value places like Asadur's because they are authentic and have soul. So many other things are corporate and bland and standardized these days, so I feel it is important to support and celebrate authentic places like this. And they deserve the support. read more

Easily accessible from the White Flint metro station, this is a small, yet bright, clean, and well-stocked store with great, friendly service. The cashier and deli guy each greeted me and offered to help, and one even pointed out that I would not be getting a very good deal on the dry giant beans. Wide selection of Middle Eastern foods-- Lebanese, Greek, Turkish, etc. Some of the foods come in wholesale sizes (next time, I bring a car and buy a giant can of giant beans). I bought my pickled turnips, pomegranate molasses, dry fava beans, sumac, and date juice here. The cashier noted that I must love middle eastern food, but that I am not middle eastern. Prior to this I hadn't intended on saying anything to this point, but I answered, "I actually am, and I noticed that you do not carry any Israeli products." He conceded that there is no demand for it with the kosher market around the corner (he even gave me careful directions). Then, still friendly, he slipped in that the kosher market does not carry any Lebanese products. Touché. UPDATE: Koshermart does actually carry Lebanese products. Still, Asadur's is great. read more

Excellent, small, Greek-centric market. I was looking for a few Lebanese products and didn't want to go to Mediterranean Bakery in Alexandria. They didn't have what I was looking for - shankleesh - but I did pick up some excellent Greek feta (Dodoni's) and another Greek cheese, some split lentils, some frozen, sliced gyro meat (pretty tasty for a non-spit cooked product!) and some excellent marinated spicy olives. Omgoodness this place is a freakin' gem and the people are so wonderfully nice. I happened upon this deli when my dog gorged herself on dogfood and stressed her digestive system so much she was sharting blood and I had to take her to the emerency clinic down the road. Not a GREAT experience, but look what came of it! Sweet gyro love. I really needed to grab and quick bite to eat and I found Asadur's and saw that they had gyros. Their gyros are a mix of lamb and beef which is so succulent and flavorful, you just might forget that there are no cucumbers on it, but everything else is so right. Yum! I've been back since and I'm so impressed with their selection of herbs and all things Middle Eastern (even the cool Hooka smokers). Love it. Oh and I found this awesome sour cherry drink. I just love this place. This is my new gyro spot. If you like ethnic food, gyros or olives, you should come by. And they have an intriguing wine selection. Pomegranite wine? Heck yes! read more

I adore this place. The owners are super friendly and really fair with their prices. Not only is the grocery selection alone worth the trip, their prepared food is delicious and authentic. The tabbouli, hummus, and lahem b'agine taste just like homemade (and this is coming from a Lebanese person who cooks often). The sandwiches remind me of the sandwich shops in Lebanon. I visit Asadur's at least once during a typical week and I have almost no need for any other Middle Eastern grocery store in the area, which are usually way overpriced (except for fresh produce, which Asadur's doesn't carry). read more

Great little gem hidden off the street in a strip mall. I'm a sucker for a good gyro and some tasty hummus and this place delivers on both. Their grape leaves are delicious as well. Do yourself a favor and eat a gyro with tasty, seasoned lamb meat-just as it should taste. And ditch the typical store bought "Sabra" brands of hummus and go get some from this place. This little store has awesome Mediterranean food! Stumbled across it while I was at G-Street Fabrics for an all day sewing class - this was the only nearby place to eat. I'm a huge fan of Greek food, but usually it's really hard to find good Greek food in this area. This is definitely the place to go! Everything I've eaten there so far has been excellent - the Fetta wrap (forget the name but it's the last item on the sandwich menu); the Beef Gyro; and the Dolmades. Delicious falafel and hummus! Wonderful tea! The baba ganoush was also good, and the portions of everything were huge for the price. After lunch at one of the three tables, we wandered through the market and picked up olives, pomegranate molasses, halvah, and more. All were delicious. (Side note) - This is not a very friendly store. I always feel like they are bothered that I'm there. I am obviously not Middle Eastern. They have the best, reasonably priced, selection of fresh olives and various feta cheeses! That is why I go there! I've bought two items, at different times, and they were not good! They were annoyed and defensive that I mentioned it.... The tahini I bought spoiled within a month. (I forgot which brand unfortunately.) Not only didn't they offer me a refund or replacement, they seemed pissed! They made excuses why they couldn't give me a refund or replacement. It was BS. They make a baba ganoush that is terrible! It was bitter and burnt! When I explained that it probably was the way they prepared it and asked how they did so - she didn't know ?!? She said "So why you bringing me this (container)?" Unbelievable! I didn't even bother to ask for a refund. Ha! Customer service = 0 + attitude too! Olives and feta = 10. I asked for half a pound of a certain cheese, and the lady cut just under a pound and said she had no way to do exact measurement. However, she had no problem charging me for the exact measurement she cut for me. Also, she did not wear gloves until after she already cut the cheese. She put the gloves on to wrap the cheese up. This is a great little spot if you're craving any Mediterranean specialty food. The deli counter in the back is a great place to get a sandwich, olives, or feta, and the shelves are stocked with all sorts of deliciousness. At the front of the store I found every type of cookie I fell in love with as a child -- courumbiethes, koularakia, and Papadapoulous chocolate-filled straws. On the shelves, they have all of of herbs and spices you might ever need for Mediterranean cooking -- kabob seasoning, sumac, safflower, even mahlepi. If you're not someone who cooks from scratch, you may enjoy the Greek wines or the refrigerated cases of dips, spreads, and pita pies. I found the staff to be really helpful and friendly too.
