I'm glad they warned us about this only I was hoping to pick up dinner for my family, and unfortunately I didn't get any tamales at all. I imagine with Covid some vendors thought the attendance would be low, but a lot of people showed up. The most disappointing part was paying $20 to get in, only to get no tamales. I wish the Riverside Tamale Festival had free admission like they do in La Habra, Indio, Placentia and DTSA (Downtown Santa Ana) at their tamale festivals.

If pubs or breweries are your thing, there are several. There are upscale to casual eateries. If you like antiques, there is a antique store. There are gift shops as well. Shops tend to close in the early evening. There is a super cute alley with the umbrellas (see photographs) and art on the walls for Instagram photography. There is a parking structure on Stuart Avenue which is free. Street parking can be challenging to find. If you do street parking, pay attention to any rules or fees if any. Would definitely come back and purchase orange marmalade from a local shop!

The makeup was HORRENDOUS it looked like dollar tree quality makeup; IF THERE ARE ADULTS going to your event atleast hire adults or hire a better sfx team. Especially adults who are paying $40 for your event. Not to mention their instagram shares posts of the child actors and describes them in CREEPY WAYS; calling them "gorgeous" etc. like?! Inoculated with healthy doses of intellectualism, academics, and music, this festival is indeed a…read moredelight! Yes, there is even the small parade of Her Majesty, Queen Victoria and her court. The parade includes fine gentlemen and ladies, a chimney sweep, a properly-kilted Scotsman playing his bagpipes, and another Scotsman that has to be at least 10 feet tall. Too bad they only do it one weekend each year. You will discover well-delivered lectures by 19th Century impersonators of notable people (such as Dickens, Van Gough, Emily Dickens for starters), imaginatively anachronistic storytellers (you cannot miss the zany Professor Peanut!), poetry lovers, and a wonderful collection of musicians. The Promenade in downtown Riverside, once known as Main St., is actually no longer a street at all. Instead, you will find a broad, public walkway lined with small and medium sized storefronts, graceful shade trees, benches to stop and breathe a spell, special water features, sculptures, and entertainment. The eye-catching historic Mission Inn, a glorious testament to old California architecture, is located about a block down from this delightful activity. This is all part of a permanent Downtown City of Riverside transformation. But during the festival, the walkway is infused with food vendors and retail booths, street entertainers, and strategically positioned stages scheduled with well-organized programs, so there is never a dull moment. Very ADA compliant, you will find little something for everyone...even friendly vibes if you wish to bring the family dog. For the kids (of the human variety), there was a goat petting tent. But later, we saw their appropriately 19th Century-garbed caretakers rambling down the promenade, mingling with the crowds. There are an eclectic list of street musicians to amuse, a Punch and Judy puppet theater to captivate your inner-child, and other regularly scheduled events (indoors and out, some free, some requiring tickets). The point is, slow down, allow yourself to be distracted, and absorb the full experience. Don't feel intimidated that this is only for the artsy types; costumes are fun but not necessary to have delightful memories. So, whatever your preference, come one, come all. Best of all, with the exception of having to pay for parking (in one of several large parking structures nearby), there is no entrance fee. The festival is active during daylight hours only.

I saw The 39 Steps last night and the 7 performers were amazing! It was a 2 hour, non-stop comedy…read moreshow. The 4 actors cleverly changing costumes, accents, and roles with the use of very clever, minimal props and performing "stage hands" was outstanding! Kudos to all involved in this hilarious performance!

A local gem known to Redlands residents but not so much to others is the outdoor theatre on a hill…read moreinside Prospect Park that is perched over the San Bernardino Valley. This cultural resource was originally built and is managed and operated by the nonprofit Redlands Theatre Festival. Here in this small amphitheater, series of up to five live musical productions and plays have been presented to delighted audiences for almost 40 summers. Diane and I just enjoyed viewing the 2013 season debut of the very funny comedic musical "The Andrews Brothers," which involves three men posing as the Andrews Sisters of '40s fame during a USO concert. As always, the acting and singing were very professional and of high quality. This dramatic setting sports good sight lines to the stage below from any of the individual fold-down plastic seats. While there is no center aisle, the concrete rows in front of seats are spacious enough to allow spectators to remain in their seats as other attendees pass by. Stage lighting is good, and acoustics are excellent. This sculpted bowl setting is not particularly large, but it still comfortably seats about 800 theatre goers in close proximity to the stage, creating an intimate relationship and palpable rapport between actors and audience. Despite taking place during the hottest time of the year, all productions begin at 8:30 p.m. So, the outside temperature is usually in the low 80s. A brightly decorated festival tram is available to take theatre goers up and down the hill. But one can walk instead to get a good workout if he or she wishes. And, once again I did. But this time not by choice. After pointing out to Diane as we rode up the hill in the tram how steep the incline was and how lucky we were not to have attempted the uphill climb, as my bad luck would have it, just as we reached our car below after an easy downhill walk right after the production ended, we noted that a camera and binoculars did not make the return trip. For, I had left them behind in a bag under my seat. I felt rather stupid, but paid for my negligence with a near-breathless quick climb to the summit, and a return walk to the car as soon as a festival staffer handed me my bag, with camera and binoculars still inside, just as I reached the top of the theatre steps. I didn't say a word before the lady thrust my possessions at me. She just knew they were mine, declaring, 'You look like a man on a mission." I thanked her for safeguarding my goods, and she replied, "I've got your back!" This was very good, since this was the second time in a month that I left my camera outside in a public place, having to rely on honest employees to make up for my absentminded-ness. The last time was on an outdoor bench at BJ's. I realize the third time may NOT be the charm, so I need to pay much better attention to my valuable personal possessions.
