The pros are that he's a very nice guy, the right amount of talkative and personable, and to some degree he seems to know what he's doing. Regulars filtered in and out of the salon during my two hours there; he is clearly beloved by the people who come to him. I don't know what went wrong with my request. I asked for highlights, but I asked for them not too close to my roots so that I could grow them out cleanly -- sort of like a balayage. I didn't exactly want a balayage, but the general idea that the highlights looked natural without being streaks. When I came home and saw my hair under my own lights and mirror, I cried real life tears. It looks terrible. There is a halo around the top 4 inches of my hair where no highlights exist, about 2 inches of highlights in the middle that go from brassy to blondish, and returns to my natural color on the bottom couple inches. $200 later, and all I got out of it were terrible photos to send my mother and a ruined weekend of figuring out how to fix it before my upcoming event this weekend.

In the time between my last hair appointment and the reopening of the city, Ashley branched out into opening her own salon, Golden Ash. Being the loyal client that I am, I followed her to this new location :) I visited Golden Ash last week for a long overdue cut and color. The results exceeded my expectations and it seemed like I was in and out fairly quickly, given that my hair required *all the services*. The interior is industrial-chic, with its exposed brick walls and abounds with bespoke touches (a poured concrete floor with swirls of gold and custom-made wood countertops). A welcome bonus is that the salon opens directly out onto a small patio/seating area. When I visited it was a sunny day, so I definitely took advantage of this outdoor arrangement - in fact, I'm convinced sitting in the sun made my highlights that much more luminous. It might be a slight overstatement to say that I feel that I can take on the world, but I definitely feel more human and ready to welcome summer with my new cut and color.

I received an extremely harsh, unflattering haircut yesterday with short layers everywhere. The…read morecut isn't flattering for my bone structure or my hair texture. Yesterday I walked in here with high hopes based on the positive feedback I received from a woman who had just received a cut for her and her daughter. I walked in without any appointment and Joachim examined and scrutinized my hair that had been cut into a soft, texturized shag. He was very eager to critique the other person's work and he decided to take a full inch off and then without hesitation claimed he would add "body" to my hair by cutting in short layers. He dug into my hair without considering my long-term goals of having a longer hairstyle. He actually removed my natural body by introducing all these shorter layers and said I'd like my hair by next year! Obviously I took a shower to to see how my natural texture looks curly because he blew my hair out straight. When I wet my hair I instantly felt he had removed way too much weight and body with these short layers. I was patient and let it air dry and my hair just doesn't look flattering from any angle. It looks harsh without any roundness or softness. I'm not sure what his logic was but I'm very unhappy that he rushed me into a cut that won't grow out nicely. I don't understand why most stylist don't understand the nature of curly wavy hair but I look like I don't even have a style anymore. I'm extremely disappointed and let down. There was enough hair for him to work with and he gave me a very harsh style that isn't flattering for my bone structure or the texture of my hair. My hair lacks body, softness and natural movement. I'm literally not going to trim my hair for a very long time because I'm very upset right now and I try to be open minded and fair but he definitely didn't use good judgment. Oh and one last thing...I have cowlicks and waves everywhere and he strongly discouraged me from growing my hair long. He is the ONLY stylist in the city of Chicago who suggested I should never bother to grow my hair long. He also retaliated by writing me a 1 star review on my Google Business profile because he's too full of ego to admit he's made a huge mistake with my hair. I've already gone to this Salon twice and will be coming back for my next appointment. She is a good listener when I told her what I was going for and showed her pictures of the tone I liked. I also let her know that I've been trying to grow out my hair so she took a small amount versus other hair stylists I've been to will take off an inch or more without telling you. Not only is she a great listener but very sweet. She always makes sure I like the end result of my hair. She always makes me feel comfortable while getting my hair done versus other places where I was nervous to see how my hair would turn out. The salon is in a great location that makes it easy for me to get there from the loop on the brown line exiting off Armitage. Their website makes it easy to book your next appointment. I really like the atmosphere at the salon, it is very clean and plays great music not too loud. The washing station is towards the back of the salon next to a fireplace which makes it very cozy. I highly recommend Salon Shiloh but specifically Simone :) I can't wait to see her again!

I found Simone through a Facebook post and we scheduled very quickly via Instagram. I sent her some pictures and explained what I was looking for ahead of time and she totally got it right away. I got there a few minutes early and she took me back right away, where we talked through what I wanted in more detail. I showed her a couple pictures of what I did and didn't like, and she explained to me what she planned to do. I have a lot of hair, but the foils took less time than usual which was great! For processing and washing, there is a very chill area in the back with minimalist furniture and a toasty fireplace which is great for when you're processing wet hair. The aesthetic and vibe were posh but not pretentious, I loved it. Everything was sparkling clean too, it's clear that the salon owner/manager has impeccable attention to detail. I could tell as soon as I sat down for my blowout that the color was perfect, even though my hair was still wet. And it is - she turned my overly bleached hair into a more lived in blonde with lots of dimension, and it is super flattering with my coloring. I feel very fortunate that I found Simone after 8+ years with my last stylist, and I definitely will be making myself a regular client of Salon Shiloh!
