They've been slingin' chicken for decades from Miller's on the West Side of Athens. They have a…read moremorning crowd of people who work with their hands loading up on breakfast sandwiches and then a steady stream until the 7pm close. So don't get a hankering for the best chicken tenders (each one is essentially a whole flattened breast) or the more old school offerings like fried hearts, gizzards, or livers. You can get those in bulk and you might ask who would ever...? My high school crew does once a year when the loser of our previous year's fantasy football league caters the next year's draft, that's who. The reason to go is the fried chicken but you can order skinless if you want to behave. They also sell biscuits and multiple sizes of cole slaw, mashed potatoes and gravy, and potato salad. You can dine in at one of probably ten tables and a surprising number of people do. But for me it is about a bucket and some sides for a picnic or that quick decision when plans to make dinner at home go sideways. Parking for 10 or so cars available in front and it is rarely full for long if at all. As a college town, Athens' restaurant scene typically caters to the students. And Miller's is definitely student friendly. But while the students flock to the latest thing (new Cane's on Court Street) the locals know that Miller's is Athens true chicken king. The family business has earned loyalty over the generations. And just know, if you are back in Athens looking for some chicken nostalgia in late summer, make sure you don't land on County Fair Week in August. That is the one week a year they are closed at Miller's.

I'm not sure what everyone ordered because we were seated in 2 different rooms, don't know why. We managed to visit with all. My dinner was a 3 item dinner, I had a small salad with their Fire Chicken, 1/2 chicken salad sandwich and a small bowl of cheddar bacon soup. I left there very full & friends teased me "that I ate the whole thing" No complaints except for someone saying a Senior Discount was available at the front register, but you had to ask for it. That's incorrect because the cashier said there's no such thing. I believe you have to sign up online and join Bob Evans Restaurant Club

When the breakfast was ordered, the server left before it could be specified. My wife had to catch her to tell her scrambled eggs. She started to walk away again, my wife stopped her to tell her bacon. Off she went, my wife had to stop her and tell her biscuits. It seems that if you order breakfast without swiftly specifying, you'll get over easy eggs, bacon, and yet to be determined bread option. It took a very long time, and we learned that they had two new cooks. No problem, it's going to take longer. Cool. Waitress kept our drinks filled, was friendly, explained things. No problem. Food arrives, my daughter's tenders and fries arrived. Only 2 of three tenders. Seriously overcooked tenders. My daughter ate one and left the other. My wife only has her scrambled eggs and bacon. We learn then that they were out of biscuits and they just started them. It would be twenty minutes. My sandwich and soup were great, no complaints. Overall, we were there for well over an hour and received only a portion of what we ordered, some of it burnt beyond being edible. I thought it would be reasonable to get a discount. Server couldn't help, which I understand, but she got the manager. The manager offered 10% off. The lack of customer service skills displayed by the manager was absolutely wild. BTW, this was the first time I have ever asked to be comped in my life and it was miserable. Strongly suggest bypassing this location. We'll continue to frequent other Bob Evans locations as it's a favorite.
