Evanston animal Hospital has been caring for our dog Radar for the last 2 1/2 years. Given that Radar is getting elderly, it has been a challenge. Their service has been exceptional, and we have been very happy with them unlike our previous vet, Radar is happy to enter their premises and feels safe. I am being 'encouraged' to revise my review. This is my second review of this place! On March 24th, I took my perfectly healthy cat to them for a food prescription, senior blood work, and an ear cleaning. I told the vet several times that she should not rub his ears too hard because of polyps in his ears. After the cleaning, my cat could not walk anymore. I called the clinic and they said to come back. I did not want to stress him out more and said I would wait. I really thought he would be better the next day. He wasn't. I took him back to Evanston Animal Hospital to have them check him out to find out why he was falling over and could not stand and was walking in circles. They couldn't tell me anything only that sometimes a cat can lose their balance after a cleaning but it would go away. Then, I was charged for that office visit. I ended up taking him to Duke Animal Hospital three more times after that visit and to a specialty clinic in Logan Square and he had an appointment to have his ear checked out at another specialty clinic, but he passed away before we could get him to that appointment at MedVet Emergency clinic June 1 at 1 PM. He really suffered those incredible hard 39 days. His bloodwork shows he was in perfect health. read more

We've been blessed in Evanston by having several excellent veterinary practices in different locations. Over my 30 years here, I've used several of their vets: Dr. Fox at Fox Animal Hospital, Dr. Hagedorn at Bramer, etc. But when Dr. Gail Henry established her independent practice near my home in southeast Evanston, I started getting some of my pets taken care of there several years ago. My experience with this hospital has been super excellent. It is the best that I've tried so far. Dr. Henry acts almost like an internist in that she is very knowledgable about each of my animals and very easy to discuss different possible approaches to their care. Also, this practice can do various analyses in house. Then, if needed, samples can be sent out. The Vet assistants are very professional and also caring. And the front desk assistants are probably the best I've seen so far, in getting in touch with me, helping me communicate with the Vet, and getting prescriptions accomplished. Some of my pets are old and have complicated health situations, others are young, but Dr. Henry has been able to supervise them at every stage, for which I am grateful. I realize that things can go wrong with any health situation, but I am certain that this Vet practice is one of the very best at dealing with whatever comes up. read more

We have been taking our fur kids to EAH for many years and couldn't be happier with the people and amazing level of care our dogs receive. Dr. Henry and Dr. Altneau are such kind professionals who treat their patients as if they are their own, which we greatly appreciate. Last fall our dog Ginger had a very scary event where she was having great difficulty breathing, and we had to get her to MedVet for surgery. Dr. Henry and everyone at EAH managed to get Ginger stabilized so we could get her to MedVet..she wouldn't have made it without that help. As long as we live in Evanston we will be loyal patients because we know our fur kids are getting the best possible care. read more

I wanted so badly to like this place since it's very close to home. In the past 6 months, I've brought my cat in for one regular exam and a couple of nail trims. In the past, I was told that I didn't need to make an appointment for nail trims, which was great, since she *hates* going in the carrier. This morning I brought her in for a trim, and the receptionist said I'd have to wait 15 or 20 minutes for tech availability. A-OK, no problem, understandable, I'll wait. The tech came out 2 or 3 minutes later and said -- in a scolding voice -- that she could do the trim, but in the future I'd need to make an appointment. (What, wait, that's not what they said before...) The nail trim was done in about 5 minutes, and when I checked out, the receptionist said it'd be best to call in advance to let them know we'd be coming. I explained *again* that I never know if I'll be able to get her in the carrier, so an appointment is pretty much out of the question -- especially when they *charge a fee* if you're 10 minutes late or more and they want 24 hours' notice for a cancellation. Dr. Fitzgerald has done a nice job with her general health care, but I'm probably going back to my old vet. read more

Possibly the worst veterinary service in Evanston. Dr. Altneu sent my dog home with a cranial cruciate ligament (a torn ACL) and prescribed 2 weeks of bedrest, when the dog needed knee surgery. For two weeks of bedrest, Altneu gave me 10 pills (days) of Vetprofen. When I asked for enough medication to cover the full 14 days and a bit more, EAH refused to provide it. When I asked to book a follow-up appointment in two weeks, they wouldn't schedule it. Soon it was bumblingly revealed: they weren't sure they would have hired an x-ray technician before the two weeks were up. As a "health" providing business, it is unethical to string clients along and disguise it as "treatment." All they had to say was "See a specialist." I took my dog to the Veterinary Emergency Group at 755 W North Ave near Clybourn. We walked straight into their open hospital / examination space, she was diagnosed in a minute, getting x-rays within 15 mins, and home in under 3 hours. I also paid less for "emergency services" than I would have with EAH. read more

We have been taking our senior dog to EAH for two years now, switching from another vet that had a more corporate focus and we wanted a more personalized approach. Our dog is a member of the family and we chose our dog's health care provider in the same way we chose our daughter's health care provider when she was young: credentialed, respected, up to date, highly recommended and a kind bedside manner. I cannot say enough about the vets and staff at EAH. They are kind, gentle and patient with our guy who can be challenging when he's afraid. The vets call/email after hours with follow up on test results. They care about the animals they treat. I highly recommend EAH for both competency and caring. read more

An attorney friend of mine told me last week, "If you could bottle and sell that 'dog that likes going to the vet' stuff, you can make a fortune!" The only problem with that investment is I don't think I'd make any money off of any pup but my own. I had a Lab and a German Shepherd for 22 combined years, and both of them acted like I was taking them on a trip to an ammonia factory whenever a vet visit was needed! It was to the point where muzzles and anesthesia were always involved. Meanwhile, my current dog has CONSISTENTLY almost yanked the leash out of my hand as soon as we turned the corner to the block where this veterinary office is. SHE ABSOLUTELY LOVES THIS PLACE, specifically a few vet techs and the veterinarian too. Post-pandemic, I pondered on whether she liked this vet office because they gave her treats. But she's even happy to see techs with no treats. She just likes it there. Although I'm the boss of her in every other way, she's the boss of me when it comes to two things: the vet and our walking route (the latter of which she moves like a tour guide). Although I gripe and grumble over a few increased rates and always feel like there's a new fee to pay (this time, the worm test), I'm going to do it anyway. I'm just a penny pincher who's always comparing prices, but it's worth it if I can keep this happy (and weird) dog healthy. The staff is patient with my grumbles (although I STILL think the automated message should clarify the fecal test is an additional cost). To my relief, they do give pricing via email if asked. (Walmart's individual pricing is better than that affiliate relief program, which requires six Simparica Trio at a time.) Regardless, it's all needed! The staff is ALL professional, pleasant and friendly. Even though I sometimes consider going some place closer to home, I have yet to attempt to do so. I think my dog would drag me there anyway. P.S. I don't know why I'm so impressed by this, but my eyes lit up when the vet remembered my dog's adoption anniversary. While I expected her to remember my dog's birthday (from the charts), she seemed to recall this on her own. I was happy to tell a funny story about the second anniversary. I like that Dr. Henry is so attentive that way. Actually, I just like Dr. Henry overall once I was able to meet her in person when dog owners were allowed into the room. She's very cool. read more

Dr Henry started well but lost focus and her business suffered as a result. She now has a customer service lead who seems to think it's her business to be bossy and tell you to go to blue pearl should you have any need but we'll patient care. As a result I can no longer recommend this business. There are better vets out there who actually seem to care about their patients and customers. read more

When I took my dog in for a check up, I got a whole bunch of attitude from the vet about my personal decision to not give my dog heartworm medicine (which is a neurotoxin, btw). But attitude is not what was needed. The proper protocol for a pet with an owner that chooses not to give the dog a neurotoxin is to suggest frequent testing for heartworm so it can be caught early, as well as to discuss helpful regiments like, keeping the dog away from dogs that may not have had heartworm treatment, and avoiding visits to hot areas for heartworm that have an abundance of mosquitos. That did not happen at Evanston Animal Hospital, not at all. Bottom line, like a lot of vets and doctors, they just want to sell drugs and comply with a corrupt pharma industry. Frequent testing and cooperative medicine is simply more work and time than the easy profit they make from unneeded drugs. And never should a vet have a dismissive attitude toward an owner that is thoughtful in their medical choices for their much loved pet. Choices are choices that should be respected, and a medical professional should be the first person (not the last) to offer healthy and thoughtful medical choices. read more

Katelin the "customer service lead" was just so rude and unhelpful. I am shocked by her lack of professionalism. First, The office took my credit card for their required deposit for a new client. When I called to cancel because of illness days before the appointment as a courtesy, they had no record of my deposit nor of my appointment. (Where is my credit card information?) I had previously asked to speak to the doctor if possible when staff couldn't answer a question about dental cleaning. Instead, Kaitlin called back without identifying herself several days later. She simply said she was from EAH. I thanked her for calling thinking she was the vet. After I explained my cat's history and asked my question (politely and grateful the the "vet" had called back) Kaitlin identified herself as the CSL and said "we don't want you as a client." At no time was I rude. I apparently asked a question about cost they didn't want to answer so Kaitlin's response demonstrated a need to exert herself without professionalism. And apparently misinformation was told the owner. Bottom line, this business is not run professionally. read more

Update: so apparently I'm not supposed to post photos of a wound that this place refused to even consider us seeing a vet. We were at the ER a little over 24 hrs prior (after 6 hrs in waiting room) & were told to follow up with a regular vet . Apparently every vet now just says bring to ER & uses Covid as an excuse for 2 month wait times...not even considering how they are over loading ERs and those places are short staffed & that the results are that pets in need are enduring 6 hour wait times to be seen and receiving sub standard care. So, long story short thanks to clinics refusing to even assess the pet- 2 days laters after the ER visit, I had to make the heartbreaking decision to put my little pal to sleep...as the bone became too badly infected within that valuable day and half of trying to see a vet. I guess the truth hurts- so instead this clinic would rather Yelp try to remove my review in which I did seek help from this place. Stand by my review, if you had employees who willingly chose to collect unemployment during pandemic though their services were needed - I think they should not be in any job where medical care- human or pet is needed. And I know this to be true because I know employees who did exactly that. There were jobs open and they refused to return until the unemployment ran out. I'm an essential worker. I went every day to work despite an autoimmune condition. Same bs, Covid as an excuse for 2 month wait times. How about prioritize patients on need basis? No, ER visit isn't the answer. They sent us home with absolutely no wound care- just too broad antibiotic. The only thing ER visit did was cost me 6 hours of my time (4.5 of it sitting in a waiting room, another hour sitting in a room after they sensed I was about to leave reception) and $400. I've worked entire pandemic...not at home. I truly hope anyone who chose to sit home and collect Covid bump for unemployment instead of doing a job that is vital (human & pet medical) feels great about their decision to choose laziness over helping. I'll bet every single unemployed by choice enjoyed ordering & receiving their packages on Amazon & never thought, "Gee, someone is still able to do their job during Covid." read more

Dr. Henry and staff are wonderful. If you are looking for the lowest costs, this isn't the place for you - but the value offered is excellent. My cat had to have surgery after multiple urinary obstructions, and even though Dr. Henry hadn't even seen him for the obstruction (it was all through BluePearl emergency), she advised me through the process and kept up with his care throughout and post-op. My dog has had to have a couple of dental surgeries with them, and did much better than she had at other practices in the past. Overall, I highly recommend Evanston Animal Hospital. read more

We adopted 3 kittens from the Evanston Animal Shelter (We only wanted 1, but couldn't separate the last 3 babies of the litter!) and had their final vaccinations done here, at their suggestion (missed the appointment I had at the shelter). So kind and friendly! I loved how everyone interacted with the kitties (front desk, the techs were great, vet was fantastic).The other day one of the cats was exhibiting unsettling behaviors (head tilt, rocking back & forth). The receptionist was so patient and sweet..I wish I could remember her name. Dr. Henry called back quickly and requested a video in order to determine how urgent (if at all) this is. I was able to get an appointment for Friday and sooner if there's a cancellation. I have two large dogs, one of whom is about 100 lbs of terrified hot mess and one of whom is a 65 lb wiggly guy who tends to gets snappy when poked and prodded. Going to the vet has always been an anxiety-provoking ordeal, but just got so much easier! I couldn't be happier that I finally left my old vet, who seemed clueless about my dogs' needs and constantly tried to sell me unnecessary procedures, to check out Evanston Animal Hospital. I'll recommend them to anyone who asks, whether they need care for dogs or cats. Dr. Henry and all the folks at EAH were so accommodating and sensitive. They were willing to handle everything (vaccines, heart worm test, nail trimmings) according to each dog's needs--in the back without me for the snappy squirmer and in the exam room on my lap on the floor for the big baby. Everyone was exceptionally kind and communicative with me, and gentle and intuitive with the dogs. I appreciated that the treats were hypoallergenic since my squirmer is allergic to everything on the planet. Test results were fast and I got a message the next day with results from blood work, heartworm tests, and fecals. There's an online portal for ordering medications and records, and receipts can be emailed to help with digital record-keeping and conservation. The office has a big, clean waiting room with large windows and a scale that's level with the floor (much easier than convincing a scared pup to climb onto a raised metal platform). They even have free collapsible water bowls on the counter. It's easy to get to. There's parking out front, free street parking one block east on Dempster, and 15 minute parking in the alley. And the lake is only a few blocks away if you want to reward your pups for surviving the vet! All this and prices are totally reasonable! Tip: Make an appointment in advance. Their schedule seems pretty tight, which makes sense given how great they are. read more

Evanston Animal Hospital deserves more than 5 stars, in my opinion! I have had the best experiences with the staff here in terms of their kindness and knowledge. We had a dog, who was 17 years old and sadly had kidney failure toward the end of her life. Dr. Henry walked through it with us every step of the way, and was so patient and even would squeeze her in for an emergency we were having. This team is incredibly compassionate and easy to work with. Dr. Henry is not one of those vets who will push you to spend, spend, spend, and in my opinion she looks out for the pets wellbeing and the pet parent's wellbeing by being this way. She runs tests when truly necessary and gives excellent advice. We also have two kitties, and she has been more than awesome with the feline set as well. Seriously, go see them. This is honestly the best veterinary practice I have ever taken my pets to. The level of care and customer service is super high. We won't go anywhere else. read more

So glad to have found this place!! Excellent veterinarian, Dr. Gail Henry, and facility at this new clinic (as of July 2017). The staff are kind and caring, and it is clean and modern. We were seen on time and Care Credit is accepted for payment. Happy, pretty colors on the walls and great atmosphere/environment. We have been looking for years for a great vet. Finally, we have found a new one. We lived in the UK for a few years and were amazed at the quality of veterinary education and doctors there. We found it a little harder to find good vets here in Chicago. Very nice vets: yes. Very caring vets: absolutely. But "efficient for solving the problems our animals had" vets were harder to find and it is so frustrating to know your fur baby is not in optimal health when you want them to be. Maybe we were just unlucky. We tried Chicago Cat Clinic, Bramer, MedVet, Your Pet's Wellness, etc. All were nice, but our animals issues weren't being resolved. We found Dr. Tammy that we loved, at Broadway Animal Hospital, but then she moved away (and her assistant is now the assistant at Evanston Animal Hospital too!). Side note: our 20 year old boy cat was the love of our life until 2014 and his first vet, because he was British, was The Royal Veterinary College of London, England. Guess where Dr. Henry was educated? The Royal Veterinary College of London, England (no, she doesn't have a British accent :-) )!! We took it as a sign and tried out this new Evanston veterinary clinic with easy access for us to Rogers Park, in South Evanston, right by Dempster station and the excellent Blind Faith Café right across the street. Dr. Henry was thorough, personable, intelligent, kind, caring towards our animals and most of all she listened to us and our concerns. She took her time to really examine each of our animals and asked a lot of questions. In one hour we had more answers and a powerful care plan for our animals than we had been given in years, as well as thorough exams, blood tests, gland excretion, vaccinations and cultures taken. We left the next day on vacation, and received not one but two follow-up calls/emails to give us lab results, referrals and care plans for our cats. Yesterday, we took our kitty Bianca in for her dental and she was administered a pain reliever and antibiotic and she came out with gleaming teeth, and acting like she's a kitten (she's a senior). She has a referral to an animal allergist for the itching and pain she's experienced all her life, and our other cat Charles has a referral to a neurologist for his nystagmus. We feel so relieved and so fortunate to have found Dr. Henry. Thank you! read more

We recently moved our cat's care to Evanston Animal Hospital and couldn't be happier. Because of Covid we haven't been able to meet the vets face to face, but they have been extremely easy to communicate with, and the office staff and techs have been great to deal with. My kitty had to have a dental with multiple extractions yesterday (poor thing) but the Dr. was in touch with me the whole time, and I felt like she was in really good hands. They even called today to check up on her. Kitty is going to be happier for sure, and I am really grateful they caught this problem during her check up. So happy we decided to come here from our other vet. I would recommend to anyone with a pet. read more

Following the comment that I received on my review, that I got recommendations and chose not to take them - I didn't. I asked via email for food recommendations that did not require a prescription and did not receive any. I finally read over the vets "notes" from our phone conversations, and it seems one staff member completely misunderstood my question "is it urgent to schedule this now?" as "how urgently can I schedule this" and the other staff member - I think the main one who said I was rude or yelling - basically mocked my job in the notes when I explained why I couldn't just come in at the drop of a hat. All of this just reinfoces my sense that the staff is pretty sheltered from the realities that many of us face making ends meet day to day. I've found a much better vet and would avoid this place. read more

We had chosen to ignore the unnecessarily terse email from this office when we asked for our medical records. They have now chosen to misrepresent that we were abusive to them. We were not. They have a right to disagree with our reasons for being upset, but their post and email reflect our concern: Inability to accept criticism from an ongoing client who felt their attitude several times when a pet was needing immediate care were underwhelming. I Switched to Evanston Animal Hospital when I heard good things about Dr. Henri and because of the proximity to my home. Recently I visited there when my dog was wretching and coughing continuously. I was very frightened and told that he had a "bad virus" going around. I was not treated by Dr. Henri who I trust but a "newbie" Dr. Alltreu. I called after days of holding my dog in my arms all night and reported that the medication was not working. I was truly afraid my dog was dying. They gave me a stronger medication. It did not work. So. I went back after days of sleepless nights for my dog and I and had to DEMAND that they do a chest X-Ray. They did the chest X-Ray and discovered he has congestive heart failure, a heart murmur and one more thing I cannot remember. My dog almost died during this nearly 2 weeks of misdiagnosing his condition. You also should not have to DEMAND a chest X-Ray if your dog is having trouble breathing! 24 hours later I had to email Evanston Animal Hospital for copies of his X-Rays, a summary of the visit, etc. Dr. Henri insisted to me that Dr. Altreu had suggested that I come back in for blood work on my dog in two weeks. Dr. Altreu may have written that in her notes but I was NEVER informed to do so. It would have been reassuring to me that there would be some follow through. If Dr, Altreu wrote this in her notes she is lying and covering her very poor treatment of my dog. Dr. Henri accused me of lying about Dr. Altreu's lack of follow through!! I still (48 hours later have not received a summary of the visit. So, my dog nearly died due to a misdiagnosis, I was accused of lying about any follow through blood work, and I was treated manipulatively by Dr. Henri who wanted to protect newbie Dr. Altreu. I would not ever go to this clinic unless your dog is young and completely healthy. They do not take responsibility for mistakes like recommending follow through that they make and needing you to ask for a chest a X-Ray if your dog is not breathing and is gagging! Other places have been too chaotic, vets not taking time with my cat, outrageous prices, etc. None of this is true of Evanston Animal Hospital. I got my new puppy right as Covid-19 started and really despaired finding a vet. Never fear. Evanston Animal hospital, recognizing the need for puppies to have regular care, were able to see him. He loves it there - they treat him like the little prince he thinks he is. ;-) Everyone there really has his best interest at heart and take the very best care of him. I want to share my recent experience with Dr. Henry and her staff for anyone considering using EAH for their pets' needs. I have lived in Evanston for about 16 years and previously had a Chicago vet. I have used AMC and Terry Animal Hospital. Both are great vets. Dr. Henry opened up her practice a few blocks from home so I was considering moving for convenience. All reviews were positive and her loyal clients from Hyde Park spoke highly of her. 2 neighbors had emergencies and Dr. Henry saw the pet immediately, and offered sound, thorough analysis of the situation and options (together with cost) for the pet owner. I was very impressed by that. I had been putting off a dental cleaning for my 10 year old mini poodle but noticed a loose tooth - I freaked and Dr. Henry got Sunny scheduled last week, Thursday. She called me a few times during the procedure to keep communication lines open since he did need extractions based on the radiographs -- the damage under the gum not visible to me was pretty serious. She called me after the procedure, she spoke to me when I picked him up and followed up on him all weekend since it took some time for the anesthesia to leave his system. I was pretty concerned over the Labor Day weekend, and Dr. Henry emailed me to check on him, and her tech staff also followed up. Convenience, brand new facility, superb customer service. I would recommend this practice highly to anyone considering using Dr. Henry and her staff. The cost was comparable to others in the area, perhaps a bit less than Wilmette. read more

We've made our vaccinations and preparation for a travel here. Everyone was really friendly, supportive and helpful. I must say was impressed me the most was the attitude of Dr.Henry, she was so responsive and eager to find a solution in a complicated situation we were in!
