My adult son and I decided to try Evelyn's Drive In for our celebration of his upcoming 30th birthday after seeing movie at Providence Place. It was about 2pm when we arrived, which we planned, for late lunch. We were happily greeted and seated right away. Started with Evelyn's Punch and son had a local beer. We both enjoyed our drinks. I asked for less sweet punch, it was suggested omitting cranberry juice which was perfect solution. For apps we ordered Calamari and the Blue Fish Dip. Calamari was crisp and tender, although we've never dipped in melted butter, prefer lemon and malt vinegar. The pickled peppers were great acidic cut. The Bluefish Dip-generous potion with toasted baguette slices, 24 hours later I'm still raving about. Thank goodness we had enough for leftovers. Creamy and that bluefish greatness -delicious. For lunch son ordered fish wrap and I ordered the fish tacos. Huge portions we shared and both took home enough for another meal+. Special nod to the housemade Boom-Boom sauce. I should have asked for extra to dip fries. It was that good. The fries were clearly fresh cut, perfectly crisped and salted. so some friends wanted to go out for lunch at a seafood/clam shack and I recommended FLOs but they were closed on Wednesday so we headed to Evelyns in tiverton. the 4 of us ordered drinks and food. 3 got the RI chowder which was absolutely terrible , looked and tasted like chicken broth with 2/3 potato bits and ground up clams but not much, none of us finished it. Fish tacos for 2 was just a bit better except it had cilantro in it which one could not eat. 2 of us had the fried clams app which were very good until we realized when the bill came were $40 for 11oz app ! clam cake were like rubber and maybe one clam per dozen. al in at $247.00 for lunch which most was left. service was good and fast but all of us were very disappointed and won't be back. I've only been here a couple times cause usually it's out of my price range but today I decided to splurge. I got the fish fillet (which looked beautiful) with the shrimp. It doesn't matter that they forgot the shrimp and I had to go back and get it. That's human error. The problem was when I got the shrimp they were tough and flavorless and had a weird hard coating. The food is good, but ridiculously overpriced. It does have a lovely water view, but there are "fancy" restaurants with the water views that cost less. we ordered take out for our family, my husband went to pick it up and asked the person taking care of him to please put extra napkins and salt and pepper in the bag. And the person taking care of him said yes everything is in there. When he got the food home there were no napkins and 2 salts and 1 pepper. We ordered whole belly clams and they were cold. What is really sad is that they make zero effort to do the make basic effort on the food. So let's begin by saying that eating deep-fried food generally makes me feel pretty gross. But when it's great, it's worth it. When it's not, it's nothing but misery and regret. This is a typical fried seafood place so you would assume they could get the fried food thing right. Nope. The most important part of the recipe is the breading which should be light and crispy. Here, expect a soggy greasy coating that will leave you wondering why you ate here (again) and why they can't make the minimal effort to perfect a decent fried seafood batter recipe. If they want some help, I'm here to give them any of a number of recipes that will work for them (though there isn't much you can do about the mediocre seafood that the batter will be going on). For drinks we had some virgin blood orange like spritzer which was refreshing. Our entrees were the lobster chow mein and Lobster roll (with butter) and fries. Both Delish. So.. the chow mein noodles are fried and topped with the lobster and gravy w/ onions and celery. It is a huge portion the only negative is that if your a texture person it doesn't do well on the reheat. So if you're not someone to eat the whole portion in one setting I would recommend splitting it. Would've loved a little more lobstahhh. Now for the roll, divine. The roll was buttered and toasted. The lobster was tender and warm, not chewy. Fries were freshly fried and crispy. We sat overlooking a beautiful pond in comfortable patio tables with chairs in a bed of sea shells. They did have picnic table seating if you would rather use the pick up / take out window.
