I went on a rainy Monday around noon and there was still a steady flow of customers. It seems to be a pretty popular spot. The staff is all very friendly. The soups were served to us immediately after paying. The New England Clam Chowder was good. Nice amount of clams and very creamy. I had never had Rhode Island Clam Chowder before and this seemed like the place to try it. The clear broth was surprisingly flavorful but I still prefer New England. My girlfriend and I ordered a good amount and the food came out pretty quickly. My favorite was the kung pao calamari. The squid was fried perfectly and having the sauce on the side was nice as it didn't leave the breading to get all soggy and I had control over how sweet it would be. The stuffed Quahogs tasted good but I feel like I tasted more of the stuffing over the actual shellfish. It still tasted good, but I feel like I should've gotten more shellfish. We were told they ran out of shells to serve them on so the presentation was off, but they were still tasty. The lobster rolls were both good. They were $27 which seems pretty steep to me but they were actually on the cheaper side compared to other places we saw around Newport. The lobster tasted fresh and the bread was good. Returned today, after the last time being 12 years ago, i.e., around 2014 being the last time being in the area. See previous review from 12 years ago--which was glowing! Must say, things are a bit "neat" and protocol/rule based and that is not entirely in a positive way. It's more like a cafeteria with strict rules rather than a family friendly restaurant. Must order before being seated, forks are handed to you in a prepackaged sets based on the number of parties, no reserving seats, some tables are specified for parties of 4 or 5 members, etc. Unsure. But it seemed more like a strict military protocol rather than somewhere to just come in and enjoy the fresh seafood! Saw one customer, party of two, being told to move to the other table since they have only two people. It's like, those seats would not even be filled up during their time there. Understand the strict rules, but some flexibilities might make sense in such scenario... rather than following the strict protocol, don't you think? Two sets of automatic paper towels roller in each of the male and female restroom. Cute seafood shack/restaurant. They have fresh fish available in the front end of the restaurant. I really wanted to love this place however I felt it was overpriced for the quality/portions. The clam cakes were 99% dough hardly any clam and I thought it lacked flavor. Though I did enjoy the oysters and shrimp cocktail. Do not walk, RUN here for their lobster roll. You won't be disappointed. Service is fast and efficient. I had not been here in 9 years, and that was way too long between visits. I don't know if it was because I was there in the winter, but the lobster roll was generally affordable, running you only a bit over $27 which is almost unheard of these days. This is not a place you come to for the view. There's just a gravel parking lot. But inside, oh boy! The food is no frills, but rather an exercise in wonderfullness! Tom took our order and checked on us. He's a friendly, jovial guy who seems to like his job - and people. You give him your order, pay, and you get a number to display when you get to a table. The place is spotlessly clean - even the restrooms. You can purchase soft drinks, wine or beer I had the only beer on draft - a local beer named after the restaurant, and it was the perfect accompaniment for the seafood. Now, about that. My wife had a cup of Rhode Island chowder, and it was excellent. They had 6 different kinds of oysters, and I had one of each plus 4 clams, all on the half shell. They were delicious. And I have to give an extra shout out to the shucker. All too often, when you get clams or oysters, the person doing the shucking doesn't cut through all of the attaching muscles, making it hard to eat the shellfish. Not here. They arrived on a bed of ice and were impeccably fresh and delicious. My wife ordered a hot, buttered lobster roll. But somebody made a mistake and gave her a cold roll with mayonnaise. Tom noticed, and said he would get her what she ordered. But wait! He said he would give her the "mistake" to take home in a box and even included a large container of coleslaw "for her trouble." Shortly after, out came her other roll - and both were perfect. I ordered a lobster. It proved to be a hard shell, with the tail cut for easier access. I'm still smiling! Seafood heaven is how I will sum up this place in two words. Just rolled into town and wanted some fresh seafood and this looked like a good find. It is a seafood store that also serves cooked fresh seafood. Does it get any better than this? You walk up to the register and order. They will bring the food to you and bus your table: fairly straight forward. Onto the food: 1) Hot lobster roll. this was loaded with hot butter lobster on a nicely toasted bun. So good. The fries are also cooked perfectly: hot and crispy on the outside and soft on the inside and it was not greasy. 2) Cold lobster roll. Again, this was loaded with big chunks of meat Not overly dressed, but just enough. Of the hot and cold variety, I always like a cold lobster salad roll. 3) Portuguese seafood chowder was sooooo good. Probably one of the best chowders I have had in years and easily in the top 5. Big chunks of seafood and slight kick to it. I wish they bottled that soup up for sale. 4) Clam cakes. these were ok. More like a fritter, but you put on Rhed's hot sauce and it kicks it up another notch. 5) Stuffed Quahog - like a seafood thanksgiving stuffing stuffed into clamshell and baked. The best place for fresh seafood at affordable prices in the Newport area! I went here because it was one of the only spots walkable from The Pell Hotel (17-20 minute walk, there is an accessible sidewalk the whole way, but you do need to cross the road into the restaurant parking lot). Let me tell you how my $24 hot lobster roll was the best warm lobster roll I've had in my life! The Portuguese fish chowder was also excellent and I loved the kick from the chorizo. The restaurant is casual and unassuming. You go in and wait in line to order, pay, and then they seat you and bring everything to your table. If you order soup or a drink, they give it to you when you pay and you have to carry it yourself. The inside has a diner vibe and there is also a nice patio up front. Wheelchair access details: no barriers to get on the patio or inside. When I paid, the staff accompanied me to my table with the soup tray without me having to ask for help, which is super nice. You're not supposed to seat yourself but they didn't give us a hard time about doing that to ensure outdoor space since I can't eat inside. I didn't check the bathroom. read more

Was craving fried clams so stopped by and picked up an order of fried clams, $49, and some clam cakes. The clam cakes were super greasy but that was nothing compared to the fried clams. Nothing was wrong with Anthony's Seafood! Loved the relaxing neighborhood feel, very down to earth fish market / restaurant. Eating there was a pleasure. We had a take out order that was slated for pickup in twenty minutes but wasn't presented until 80 minites later. Forewarning: the following is not so much a review as it is a nostalgic reverie of a former Middletown RI resident. I really like the fact that Anthony's is located in Middletown. The location doesn't have the cache of blue-blooded Newport. Cliff Walk, Ocean Drive, Thames Street, the mansions and their ostentation...all the crowds made it a nightmare during the summertime. Middletown is a more working class town, more approachable. The same can be said about Anthony's. Sure, they'll handle the overflow of tourists from Newport during the summer time. They've even decorated the space with used buoys and nautical gear but they haven't hired a pedigreed chef to make it all fancy. At heart, it is still a seafood shop and restaurant. The prepared offerings are an evolution of timeless regional classics. By regional classics, I mean Rhode Island recipes. Take their Rhode Island clam chowder as an example. It's a clear, seasoned seafood broth with chunks of clam meat and diced potatoes - straightforward, honest. The "classic calamari" also has a RI twist - fried slices of cherry peppers are interspersed with the crispy fried squid. The usual seafood dishes are offered and you can order them any style you like as long as it's baked, boiled, raw, or fried. There are more options, even a seafood hamburger, made with beef raised by the seashore...I'm kidding. Anyway, Anthony's caters to both tourists and locals alike. Try it out. read more

I guess I will be the odd one out and say this place was not great. When I go to a sea food market, I'd hope for more "non-fried" options. We ended up with Lobster Roll and Cod The Cod was not great. We loved the lobster roll, but the pile of fries are bigger than the roll, so it's a $30 pile of fries? I'd have given 4 stars if I just went for lobster roll, but the rest was mediocre.
