The views were beautiful. We started with cocktails at one of the high top tables- to note there isn't service to these tables we had to bring the drinks from the bar. The parking lot was packed. The view is BEAUTIFUL! Even the drive down to the restaurant is beautiful. The table we had was amazing as you can see. The service was good but not great. Our server was maybe overloaded as it was pretty packed. The drinks were ok. I feel like they are more of an overpriced novelty. I recommend wine instead. The food was also overpriced as well. I wish I took a picture of my salad. I got the wedge salad which was just two small pieces of lettuce which was also a quarter inedible. They charged me 30 dollars for a tiny "salad" that didn't even have all the ingredients/garnishes it was said to come with and the smallest slice of salmon I've ever seen. I was actually laughing at this. It took me all of 5 min to eat my "meal". The calamari was also soggy and imo not cooked well. The shrimp and corn fritters were sooooo good! I was a little disappointed in Boat House... Prior to going here I just expected it to be an amazing 5 star experience no questions asked, meanwhile the service was just lackluster and slow as time went on. The shrimp fritters, was the best thing I ate, but everything else was just ok. On my end I think I should've tried one of the popular dishes, as I think getting a chicken sandwich was trying to be too much on the safe side, and it backfired. Everything I ate was a little on the dry side. The chicken and bread was so dry that even the sauce on the sandwich couldn't save it. The highlight of the place is the outdoor view and ambiance of the place, so I automatically expected it to be really good. Even with the negative views on my end I think this place is 4 stars and in the right situation it can be 5 stars. Our waiter Neil was awesome and our 3 and 6 year old loved him. They have a great kids menu that includes dessert and goldfish which is great to keep them entertained while waiting for their main food. The property is nicely maintained and there is a nice dock you can walk on. The food was yummy. I enjoyed my miso salmon and my partner enjoyed his scallops. Two days ago, we were treated to a family lunch at the Boat House. It was a nice fall day, little breezy but the sun was out. We were seated at a window table, and had a great view of Common Fence Point in Portsmouth. We started with shared apps of Hall of Fame chowder (the best) calamari (lightly breaded with red peppers) crab cake (all crab) and shrimp corn fritter. Our mains were the lobster roll (some had cold with mayo and one had hot with butter) on a grilled brioche bun. Lots of lobster and very reasonably priced. Another amazing restaurant from our recent road trip. This restaurant was on the list of top restaurants with amazing views in the NE- and it did not disappoint! Husband had a grilled salmon with a beurre blanc sauce and their spinach side; I had their amazing crab soup along with mussels and a prosecco herb broth. Hubby eats salmon all the time and says it's the best he's ever had anywhere. He couldn't get over the crunchy glaze on top - just kept saying "Oh my God, oh my God!" The Boathouse is amazing. They continually provide the finest of drinks, appetizers, entrees, desserts and service in one of the nicest venues in New England. My wife had the miso glazed salmon, my daughter the shrimp and scallop scampi, I had Caribbean Jerk Rubbed Tuna, and each of rated ours as the best spiced, cooked and highest quality of protein and ingredients of any meal we have had in several years. My son-in-law had the fish and chips and he said it the best he ever had, including what he experiences in his home town of San Diego and in his travel in and out-side the US. We also had great apps as well as drinks and our server Trina could not have been more pleasant, efficient or enjoyable. She made our special event dinner an exceptional and unforgettable experience. Newport, New Bedford and southeast New England are proud of the many fine dining options they offer, but from our experience, nothing locally can even match, never mind exceed the quality of food, drinks and service of the Boathouse. One of my top 5 restaurants. Just walking in, you will notice a wonderful nautical decor on the water. We were a party of three. We each ordered Cocktails, appetizers, meals and desert with coffee. We each ordered three different meals, Swordfish, Chicken and Salmon along with appetizers, Shrimp cocktail and Clam chowder and then desert, Flourless chocolate cake with coffee. The cocktails and appetizers were great*, not rushed. The meals were timed perfectly and delicious. The Flourless chocolate cake and coffee certainly did not disappoint. *The clam chowder was creamy and flavorful but, it was somewhat void of the star attraction "clams", and loaded with potatoes. I had been a somewhat regular patron of this restaurant over the years so I debated on writing a review. After speaking to several restaurant owners (not associated with this establishment) I decided to provide my feedback. On Tuesday, 11/11/25, I ate at this establishment with two friends. The first thing I noted was the high prices for mixed drinks, in particular the apple fall spritz for $17, which I found outrageous. We ordered apps- hall of fame chowder, clam chowder and a cucumber app and several martinis. Let me start by saying that the service from our waitress was phenomenal, which is not always the case. I believe her name was Nancy and she was extremely attentive. I had gotten about half way through my Hall of fame chowder when I pulled a shard of glass from my mouth, after taking a bite. I checked my martini glass and there were no chips or missing glass so I knew that it came from the bite of chowder I had just taken. I politely informed my waitress who was overly apologetic and she notified the manager who approached the table a couple minutes later. He did apologize but managed to downplay the situation, almost acting as though it was not the restaurants fault. He informed me that they removed the soup and 1 martini from my bill, which I thanked him for. As we were leaving, I tried to say goodbye to the manger but he WOULD NOT make eye contact with me. I cannot recall if he did actually say goodbye but I had made eye contact with him as we were walking toward the front so he was aware that we were leaving. For me, it wasn't about what they could do for me- removing items from the bill or providing a gift card etc., it was the managers response to the entire situation that truly disappointed me. Overall, I find most of the menu and drinks to be overpriced. The location and restaurant itself is beautiful but the service in general is inconsistent (though my waitress on this day was by far the best I have had in the 15-20 times I have been). I can only hope that they did not continue to serve that batch of their hall of fame chowder to other patrons. Due to the managers lack of concern and overall disposition I would not return to this restaurant. The sign of a great restaurant, is having staff that are not only concerned with their customers satisfaction but most importantly, taking pride in the quality of the products they are serving. This particular incident could have ended tragically and the lack of concern was deeply troubling. read more

Our party of six arrived at noon and were shown to a wonderful round table in the corner surrounded by windows looking out on a stunning water view. Our server, and everyone who assisted her, was so attentive - we were never without water in our glasses or lemon wedges or extra tartar sauce. She was great! The food was also excellent in its presentation and taste. All three men had the fish and chips which they enjoyed. Two of the others had the haddock sandwich and fries while I ordered the grilled swordfish in lemon beurre sauce and two sides: Cesar salad and Brussels! Everything was excellent. Tough to find XMAS Eve dining even booking many weeks out. This was our spot for this year. We had the last slot for the night and the place was jammed. Of course - lots of free parking. In spite of the rush, service was very good except for the cocktails (overwhelmed bar?). We were seated in the "weatherized" outdoor patio so generally "comfortable." Cocktails were followed by a dozen oysters ($42). Decent but all were "Portsmouth" - salty and a bit small. Not the best we had lately. "Bread and butter board" ($5) is a good add. Entrees were seafood scampi, salmon, and crab and squid ink linguine (one of the daily specials and the star of the night). Add a glass of wine and holiday tip and damages were $300. A nice night but still searching for what we hope can be our regular XMAS Eve spot. read more

Not our first time here but my first review for it. We had an impromptu lunch which was very, very good. Initially the host tried to seat us at the bar but we said no, and then we were offered a lovely booth. We didn't have a reservation so I understand but there were lots of tables available. Anyway our waitress was superb... friendly, efficient, quick to take care of us. I had clam chowder and the wedge salad, both were delicious. My husband had the stuffies special and the haddock sandwich. He said both were excellent particularly the sandwich. He doesn't like stuffies with too much bread and these did not! For dessert we had the lemon mascarpone cake with a lemon sorbet which was perfect for the hot day that it was. I finished off with a delicious espresso served with rock candy for sugar. Sadly it was more than disappointing! 2 tiny pieces of sole, which were over cooked, on top of a pitiful few spinach leaves mixed in with lemon caper gremolata, and beurre blanc. The capers were tasteless and the beurre blanc was almost non existent. Had it not been my friend's birthday, I would have sent the meal back, but I didn't want to spoil her celebration. I will say they did get the desserts right! The Lemon Mascarpone, crème brine and cheesecake were delicious and delightful. Very disappointing! read more

Six of us dined here. It would have been even better earlier so that we could have enjoyed the view. A pleasant place designed around a long bar flanked by tables. Our server Kathleen was attentive and efficient. Only two of us were drinking this evening except for sparkling water and so we quickly got on to ordering food. Starting with calamari and a crab cake which we shared- both were delicious. Other choices followed: bolognese, grilled shrimp, two orders each of short ribs and swordfish- all of which were good but not exceptional. We were full and unable to have any dessert. The check came to around $270 and we took some food home. We are Rewards members but haven't been here for a while, although we frequently dine at their sister restaurants in Newport and Providence.
