Also, really enjoyed the outdoor pool during the hot days and walking my little 6 lb poodle in your well kept dog area several times a day (real grass! Cement walking path, too). It is lovely!! The grounds are well kept! The grass was getting watered by your inground sprinkler system daily and everything was just kept up and so CLEAN! The Golden Spike will now be the only hotel we stay in during our yearly summer family vacations with our adult children & grandkids. I have already told many family & friends how great The Golden Spike is and that they should try it next time they are in the hills. I actually stayed that The Golden Spike when I was a kid, with my family, for the first several years it was opened, in the 1970s & spent most of my time in the outdoor pool. Not sure why it took me so long to decide to try it again after 45+ yrs, but we all loved it!! We have stayed at some good, and unfortunately, some bad (dirty, not updated) hotels & cabins in the hills over the years, but now we've found our forever hotel. Please continue to keep working hard in keeping up The GoldenSpike with new updates as needed and keeping it super clean. AND please don't ever get rid of your outdoor pool. We love & enjoyed it so much. They aren't many of them in the black hills. When it's time to update your outdoor pool we are hoping you will consider replacing it with one that's larger so there is more room for family fun & swimming laps, too. We'll continue to spread the word on what a great hotel this is!! We love Hill City & the majestic Black Hills of South Dakota!

Bathroom fan didn't work and the bathroom definitely needed updated. Parking sucked, we mentioned it to staff, but they brushed it off. With Sturgis starting the week after our stay, there were so many huge trucks and trailers taking up multiple spots. Kids enjoyed the pools, that area was nice and clean.

I booked the suite here which was a steal for the price. I prefer to book bigger rooms when I can so my family has some space. This room (#200) definitely did not disappoint. We had two bedrooms, one loft and one downstairs, both with queen sized beds. Two pull out sofas. Three TVs, in the bedrooms and living area. The jacuzzi tub was an awesome extra I didn't even realize we were getting. The kitchenette was nice but there were no utensils or cups, so bring your own. There is an indoor pool here which looked nice but we didn't use it. The laundry room was very convenient, we did use that. Staff here was friendly. The breakfast is a doggy bag style breakfast due to Covid. They give you a bag with a fruit, water and either a granola bar or microwaveable Jimmy Dean breakfast sandwich. I know my room was probably very different than their standard rooms but it was immaculate and HUGE! Definitely splurge on the suite, it wasn't much more than their standard rooms.

While visiting Crazy Horse and Mt. Rushmore, I wanted lodging that was different and unique, and this was perfect. I stayed in Cabin 1, so I can't vouch for the other cabins. Cabin 1 had a wonderful old, loved feel, yet was clean and tidy. It had a large main room with kitchenette, table, futon and VCR/DVD with satellite TV. The cozy bedroom had a comfortable bed with plenty of blankets. The bathroom was very small, yet fulfilled my needs. The property had wifi and an enclosed hot tub, although I did not use either. When I was there (Late May) it got cold at night, but the cabin stayed quite warm. The location is perfect, just south of Hill City, very close to both Crazy Horse and Mt. Rushmore, close to restaurants in Hill City. If you're visiting Crazy Horse or Mt. Rushmore, don't go to a sanitized cookie-cutter chain hotel. These cabins complete the experience of being in the Black Hills.

This place rules, and I've been staying here off and on since 1994. It's located about a mile…read moreoutside of Hill City, near the Mickelson Trail. It has something for everyone. The owners, Jan and Steve, are good, gracious midwesterners who put a special touch in all the cabins. The cabins come in two varieties: old, with history, simple, smallish but full of charm, or the new cabins which are modern, bigger, and trendy in decor. Personally, if you're into history, love quaintness, then you might like the older, smaller cabins. Some of them are decorated with antiques (antique dressers). One of the larger ones has a real stone fireplace that was built in the last century. As another poster as mentioned, cabin #1 is my favorite. I have stayed there dozens of times over the years, and it is perfect for 1-2 people. The walls, ceiling and flooring are antique knotty-pine. How cute is that? The older cabins (over 100 years old, at least the one with the stone fireplace) and grounds were part of a tin mining company during the last part of the 1800's, that made the town, part of the same operation which built the Alpine Hotel (if memory serves). Chocked full of history and affordably priced, ESPECIALLY if you stay OFF season. Plus you can hike back behind the cabins. Simply awesome!
