Another great experience with an EVMS specialist!
I was disappointed when my EVMS Otolaryngologist, who knows how tough I am, referred me instead to an EVMS Sinus Specialist, Dr.Kent Lam.
The findings discovered in a Brain MRI & a followup Sinus CatScan left both my Neurologist & myself with little doubt that the findings would require Sinus Surgery or biopsy of a lesion/cyst/polyp/nodule to determine exactly what it was, possibly just being filled with sinus fluid. General Anesthesia is something I avoid at all costs due to comorbidities. Thus my pleading to my Otolaryngologist who knew I would be fine without General Anesthesia.
Going into the examination room I was prepared to plead my case. In this instance I lost. Dr. Lam didn't budge, refusing to do sinus surgery without General Anesthesia. He wasn't familiar with the many complex procedures I've had performed without General Anesthesia.
There was a good outcome. Before my appointment Dr Lam had researched my records and found the nodule was there in a Cervical Spinal MRI a number of years ago. The size hasn't changed since then. So his recommendation was to just monitor for now.
Dr. Lam did prescribe an anti inflammatory nasal mist. His Medical Assistant came in and demonstrated how to use the device. She indicated that it was a very expensive drug. They would have to go through a period of coverage denial followed by their justification. The process could take weeks. Not a problem with me. I've already been texted the first denial.
I feel comfortable with both Dr. Lam & his Medical Assistant. He didn't push me into surgery and had done his homework prior to seeing me, which I'm not certain some doctors do. His Medical Assistant is knowledgeable, explained the medication and approval process completely and began the process immediately.
Dr. Lam's office is conveniently located near the entrance to River Pavilion on the Sentara Norfolk General complex. Valet parking is offered for patients.
Rhinology shares a location with other EVMS ENT specialties & the (dreaded) Hearing & Balance Center. The employees in the multi practice office are extremely nice and friendly. It's a pleasant place to see a physician. read more
