--Botched minor filling resulting in root canal--…read more A dentist (Dr. Gomes) at Midtown recommended filling a tooth that was asymptomatic, but had shown a small cavity on X-ray. During the procedure, he spilled resin in between two teeth where no work was being done, and ruined a filling. The filling procedure itself was very, very stressful, as he kept yanking the teeth apart to drill for the filling. The tooth immediately began to hurt once anesthetic wore off. The same office then recommended I come in for a second time, where a second dentist re-drilled the cavity and re-filled (which apparently, they shouldn't have done). Months later, an endodontist confirmed the tooth was dying and needed a root canal. Almost after 8 months worth of dental work, and several thousand dollars, I now have a permanent crown over my root canal. (Interestingly, the root canal procedure was less stressful than the original filling!) Many times I contacted Dr. Penchas, the head dentist, regarding these issues. He claimed that root canals are "a common complication when placing a filling" and that I had signed paperwork relinquishing my rights in such a matter. His only recourse was that I should come in and see him so that he could 'fix the problem'. Not being comfortable with returning to that office, I declined. And that's the extent to which he made up for the botched procedure.

It may be paranoia but I recall an expose where some dentists were doing unnecessary procedures. Dr. Lewis examined my X-rays and everything was fine. No upsell into procedures. Angie took great care cleaning my teeth and then gave me some special toothpaste and mouth wash. I paid in cash since I don't have dental benefits. As a medical professional myself I thought the price was fair. Now that I've confirmed I'm cavity free I might wait another 4 years to go to the dentist...but if I change my mind I would return here.
