I feel bad leaving this review because I thought Moulouka was very nice. I sincerely wanted to like my hair after she did it but it was brassy and I left feeling disappointed. I bought a Groupon for a cut, balayage, and deep conditioning treatment. After trying to book the appointment, I was hesitant about even going because it took a few tries to reach her at the salon and I had read some bad reviews, but I decided to follow through anyways. When I got to the salon I had to have another business buzz me in because there was no answer at her salon. Once in, I told her my hair has a tendency to turn brassy and I was willing to pay extra for a toner, she brushed it off and told me I'd be fine without one. I was very surprised because usually when I get my hair done it takes between 2.5-3.5 hours for the whole process, but it only took 1 hour for her to do everything. I did not notice a difference with the "deep conditioning" treatment. We did have some good conversation and I thought she was nice, so I wanted to like her work, but I was dissatisfied. Her salon is poorly lit so it is hard to tell inside what it actually looks like. I should have said something, that's on me. But I ended up going somewhere else to have it fixed. I'm rating Evolution Hair Salon based off of three things: a hair cut, deep conditioning and balayage (I purchased this package deal on Groupon). For starters, Moulouka was late to our scheduled appointment. She strictly followed what the Groupon said. She started off with the balayage but failed to add toner, even though I asked her to. For some background reference, my natural hair is dark brown and I wanted to go lighter. So in other words I walked out with copper looking hair. The deep conditioning treatment maybe lasted for three minutes although she recommended it should last for 10 minutes. The haircut itself was no better, I asked for layers and I am fairly certain I was left with some of my split ends. Overall, I think Moulouka is a very sweet person and if you're going in for something simple, like just a haircut she would be the one to go for. But If you want something more complex you are better off paying a lot more money and getting it done right somewhere else. read more

I really needed a hair cut badly for the weekend. I have a great stylist whom I love (Jessica at the color room) but you have to call her in advance to get an appointment. I have long hair and just needed a trim to clean up the front and my ends. Easy right? No, my stylist (who is the only one there) has only one gear. She was highlighting another girl's hair while she was cutting mine and I could tell she was trying to give me the same hair cut as the other girl. I have a feeling that clients go in there and tell her what they want. Then she proceeds to ignore that and convince the client that they want something else. She wanted to give me a Jennifer Aniston '90s haircut and luckily I adamantly refused. She wanted to start razoring the back of my hair and the ends. Except she wasn't using a razor, she was using a comb with razors in between the teeth. I thought it was very unprofessional and should lack of range and skill. I just wanted framing pieces in the front but instead she started to layer my entire head. Now in the back of my head I have these terrible short pieces. When I put my hair up into a ponytail all this hair in the back falls out of the elastic! It looks ridiculous. I am so sad that my hair has been butchered!! And she charged me fifty dollars. I am the type of person who thinks you pay for what you get. I would be willing to go to haircutters and take the chance they mess up my hair bc its cheap. I decided I didn't want to take to big of a risk but looks like I did and had to pay $50 for it anyways! If you like weird tribal music and incense burning while waiting 30 minutes past your appointment to be seen and you like 90's hair styles THEN this is the place to go. Good points - 1 Hostess is generally polite, and provides a good service. 2 Hair cut and hair color were decent enough. Bad points - 1 She never told me what hair color and shampoo/conditioners brands she used. When I asked her, she said "they are nice". It is natural for me to be suspicious about the quality of products used. 2 The deep conditioning was just a namesake. It lasted for only 5-10 minutes, like any conditioning. 3 The hair brushes and combs were all unclean and unsanitized. They were full of old and dirty hair. And when I asked her to clean them before putting in my head, she frowned. Overall, I only went here because I couldn't have gotten a cheaper haircut and hair color, atleast within Chicago area. However, I won't be visiting this place again. If you have bought a Groupon, please call her in advance and make sure she agrees to accept the Groupon. read more

I had a wonderful experience here today! Moulouka is a very sweet woman who knows what to do with hair. Even though my Groupon deal had expired, she gave me the $60 deal for cut, color, and a deep conditioning treatment. Moulouka gave me several options for color after I showed her what I was hoping for, and then gave me a color that was even better than what I had hoped for! My hair is now soft, cut just the way I wanted, and looks GREAT! I feel quite pretty. One of the best parts of coming here was the atmosphere. I felt no pressure to make casual conversation, and we oscillated between talking and me reading quietly. This was just the relaxing, positive experience I was hoping for, and I will recommend her to everyone I know in Chicago. You won't regret coming here! read more

I left several msgs for this salon..until one day I just "happened" to reach someone, who acted like she "never got my messages" but yet brought up my Groupon that I mentioned ONLY on those calls! She made an appt. for Tuesday. I called at least 5 MORE times, once on Monday to reconfirm and then 4 times Tuesday when no one was answering the phone to let me into the salon. NEVER did anyone answer. Such an unprofessional salon. I spent $6 to park on Clark Str. for NOTHING!! Got a "different" asymmetrical cut on a whim - the staff and my stylist must have thought I was crazy but whatever, when I make up my mind on something...... anyways - the reason three stars is because my stylists scissors seemed dull and would tug at hairs instead of cutting them. It was very clean and the company was very enjoyable, but I definitely got the feeling they thought I was weird or something. So overall, not the best, not the worst. Technically a great cut. Wonderful Woman. Talented hairstylist! I had a great experience getting my hair cut, highlighted, and deep conditioned today. Perks: HER WORK: excellent! I have very thin hair and she never once made me feel self conscious; quite opposite actually--I walked out of there with beautiful, voluminous blonde locks. She is super time-efficient! I've never had better highlights nor have I left an appointment thinking "oh wow, I've got time to spare before I have to..." I loved the coziness and intimacy of her one-room salon. Imagine you have flight tomorrow and you have booked appointment for today to get haircut and hair color done, when u drive 40 min to get there, the place is closed. When I call them and the Lady who booked my appointment and was supposed to provide me the hair service was speaking from home and she said that she is the only one in the entire salon who does the hair color. She said she lives very far away and she can't come today and she thought appointment is for some other day (Where I clearly booked for this day and repeated myself 10 times to be sure she can understand) She couldn't understand this that what day she booked an appointment with me. Purchased a groupon for Highlights, Haircut and Deep Conditioning. Moulouka was very nice and a good conversationalist. I loved the space it was cool. Since it was just her, It felt more private. She put me under a steam dryer for the deep conditioning. She did razor cut which is a technique very few people have. I was alittle worried after reading the reviews but I wanted to give her a chance and come to my own decision. My hair turned out great, I thought she did a wonderful job! I only did the Smoothing/Straightening Treatment Groupon, so I can't speak for cut, color, etc. I will say that it does generally hold true that "You get what you pay for." I expected this, so I am not upset. I do have very thick hair and I researched the straightening/smoothing treatment process and no products or salons advertise that it can be done in an hour, and this was done very quickly. I won't say that what she did didn't work at all, though. I have seen a slight difference in my hair, just not the full transformation I expected. I'm not too upset about that though, considering around $100 was what I was willing to spend. I'm sure if I paid $250 and went somewhere else I may have gotten better results, but I wasn't in a position to pay double so I am satisfied with less-than-perfect results for a less-than-full price. So that's just a personal decision you need to make when you think about purchasing not just this Groupon, but ANY Groupon. I can get half off sushi at several places around town but they're half off because they aren't as good as the best in town who can afford to charge full price. That should be common knowledge by now. As for the salon suite and the actual stylist, Malouka, I don't have complaints. Some people enjoy the loud, boisterous, conversation-overpowering, gossipy hairdressers in big fancy salons- but if that is NOT for you, then you're in the right place. It is a small and quiet suite with one chair and she is the only stylist. She has a more reserved personality, and she is the type who likes to feel out the customer. If you want to chat, she'll chat. If you want to sit and read, that's fine too. Very laid back, not your over-the-top chatty bubbly personality that can be a little too much to handle when you're captive in a chair for an hour or more. read more

This is a one person salon, one dark room. Nobody seemed to mention that in the reviews, and I would have liked the heads up. The woman is very nice indeed, but she says she knows things that she does not. I asked for ombre tips and instead she dyed by entire head blonde, and the transitions between my brown and the blonde were so clear it looked like 1 month old roots coming in. I asked her to fix it, and she was very surprised and went over the whole thing with toner, barely leaving any blonde tips (basically bleached my hair for no reason). Ended up going home and buying a box of brown hair dye and making the ombre myself with a toothbrush. Turned out much better than what she did! The cut was ok until I came home and realized the back was uneven and there were random chunks taken out in the top, ok for straight hair, but NOT for curly hair. This salon is in a small room in the 2551 Clark Street Suites. I prefer this because all of the stylist's attention is on you. This is also a short walk away from where I live. There aren't many "frills" but I left with my hair looking great and to me that's what matters. Molouka did a wonderful job on my fine hair. I have dark brown hair and was wanting highlights that were blonde, not red. Every salon I have been to has told me that my hair pulls red, and then leaves me with highlights I don't like. For that reason I had gone without any for over a year. Molouka really listened and gave me not only beautiful blonde highlights but also a very nice haircut. I had a really bad experience here and ended up having what they did fixed at a different salon (Art of Hair Design in Old Town did a great job fixing what Evolution messed up). I went to the Lincoln Park location. It's a small room. The apron they put on me was wet and smelled like BO, I talked to the woman about what I wanted and she said it "wouldn't work" and basically gave me not even close to what I wanted. She gave me chunky bleach highlights when I asked for a red balayage. She wasn't very communicative and kind f just pushed my head where she wanted it. I had a funny feeling from the start, and I should have listened to my guy instead of having to pay more money to fix the hair I left with. I would have gone back for them to fix it, but I honestly had such a negative experience I didn't trust that it would be better the second time around. I've never given a bad review before, but after this experience I want to make sure others don't have the experience to. I would highly recommend going somewhere else. read more

I went to Evolution for the first time a few days ago. I called and asked if I could be seen in 15 minutes, and was told yes. I got there and we started right away. I asked for shorter bangs and a natural low-light. I have gotten low-lights quite a few times, and each time they come out completely fake looking. At Evolution they came out perfectly- EXACTLY like I wanted, as did the rest of my hair. I have never been so satisfied with a hairstyle by someone I've never been to before. I thought this was a legitimate place and I thought Malouka was nice and sincere. I was very wrong. She advertises on groupon keratin blowout treatment for $115. It is NOT REAL !!!!! First of all, I have had these before, She did my long hair in less than an hour. SHE RIPPED ME OFF!!!!. I DO NOT EVEN THINK SHE USED ANY TREATMENT AT ALL. I was nice enough to not purchase the groupon but call her instead so she gets all the profits, but she ripped me off. I did not feel like arguing after having a long day, but BEWARE, especially if you buy a groupon. Terrible, terrible that she does that. I even sat at the chair while we were chit chatting thinking she would come back to finish the so called treatment. I was warned that these so called salon do keratin treatments cheap because they use the cheapest, low costing product. Again, I do not believe she did this in less than an hour on my long coarse thick hair. Shame on her for doing that. Too bad, because I really thought when I met her that she was a nice lady. Now I can see why her reviews are so low. I told myself not to go, but I did, and thats what I got, ITs one of those salons where you walk down the steps and there are a row of stylists in their own room, not a REAL hair salon. Moulouka asked me to call back 2 days before day I wanted in. I asked her if she was sure she would have an opening. She said yes. I called 2 days before day I wanted in and she said she was full. I explained she was the one that asked me to call back and she only said she was full. I have long hair and went to Malouka for a Keratin Treatment. Right when I showed up, I was already disappointed with the salon itself (actually it's a room). However, I tried thinking positive and just decided to go through with it. She sat me down and started on my hair. After putting the cover on me, she showed me the product that she will be using on me and it's not even keratin treatment! it seems like some generic product that is imitating the keratin treatment. My hair is down to my hips and it only took her an hour to do my hair which is unbelievable since I had this service done before and it took 2 stylists to work on my hair on 2 hours! She totally ripped me off because I was charged $250 and my hair had no difference. On top of that, I had highlights done also and she totally left a chunk of hair undyed and it was very noticeable. She offered me a free repair service in 2 weeks since I have chemicals done in my hair, and I did not take her offer. I went to Moulouka to get the Keratin treatment done. You don't see many Black hairstylists offering Keratin treatment so it was nice to discover her. I had the Keratin treatment done before with Global Keratin products so I knew what I was getting into. She did my hair in an hour and a half. To me that was a plus because it usually takes a few hours to get it done. She is really nice and I am sure she used the Keratin because I saw it in the room. I don't know how some would think she didn't use it. She is pleasant, fast and styled my hair without me asking. I would recommend her to everyone. I recommend calling her rather than going through Groupon. She fit me in the same day which was fantastic. read more

I purchased a groupon to have my hair cut, highlighted, and deep conditioned. Since I haven't had anything done to my hair for about 6 months, i was in desperate need of some help. I had a horrible previous ombre that had turned red and terrible split ends. Moulouka was understanding of everything I wanted. She kept the length I wanted while freshening up the ends and did a phenomenal job with the coloring. I found this place on Groupon and gave it as a Christmas gift to my friend. For several weeks she was calling the business and leaving messages to schedule an appointment. When she finally was able to make an appointment for yesterday at 5:15pm, she spent $12 on an Uber to make it for the 5:15pm appointment and she ended up waiting outside the business establishment for half hour, called the business number several times and the owner never showed up or answered her phone. Now my frined does not have any interest in returning and utilizing the groupon voucher to an unprofessional establishment. I am extremely disappointed, especially when this was a gift to my friend. This place is a complete disappointment. I was getting married in 2 days! and I needed a good hair salon that was fast and had a good price, my friend Amanda reccomended Evolution Hair Salon because she is a long time customer their and her hair looks great!. So i decided to give it a try and what I got was more than I expected, the atmosphere was great, my stylist was so nice and convincing, she did an excelent job! I came home and my friends that I must have spent a ton for my hair job but, I told them about Evolution and they decided to give it a try, now we all go. My roommate just googled good, inexpensive haircuts in the Wrigleyville area and we discovered this place- I probably wouldn't have wandered in on my own, but I'm so glad she told me about it. I've been there about 4 times now. The owner's name is Moulouka, and I've never had anyone there do my hair but her but she is amazing! I get a haircut, highlights, and all over color for $150, which I think is a good price and definitely worth it. I have long, blonde hair and I think the last time she colored my hair is the best it has ever looked after getting cut and colored. Plus she is so sweet and nice to talk to.
