Like everyone, during the pandemic, I got used to coloring my hair at home but I stopped for a trim to freshen up for an in person conference I was attending and ended up getting color too and landed with Maria. She is fantastic. I am not a big fan of change but she gave me a fantastic haircut that freshened up my look that everyone was complementing my hair. I walked in for a haircut and left with an unnecessary hair cutting lesson. I walked into this salon for a simple haircut and walked out feeling completely frustrated. I came in with a clear idea of what I wanted, nothing drastic, just a specific length and style that I know works for me. But the stylist flat-out refused to listen. Instead, she insisted she knew better because she's been doing this for many years and was incredibly patronizing throughout the appointment. It's incredibly disappointing to pay for a service only to be treated like your opinion doesn't matter. I ended up coming home and fixing it myself. The owner here gambles...with your hair and at the casino. I've been coming here since I was a little kid, and the owner has created a really unsavory culture over the last two decades. My hair was recently burned off my scalp by the cheap products they use, and I had to cut most of it off. They did not want to reduce the $200 bill by any amount for my trouble. I understand the salon owner needs to pay off her gambling debts, so honest customer service that gets in the way of that must be a real hassle. I have one important suggestion: please don't take your staff to the casino. Focus on not losing customers you've had since the early 2000s, because I'm not coming back. I had a very disappointing experience with Eriona. I asked for a simple dusting/trim, but she cut off more length than I requested and left the top layer noticeably shorter and uneven (about an inch shorter than I wanted). She was so lovely, kind, professional and a master with scissors- she gave me a beautiful layered cut that I know will grow out and still look amazing. I will start by saying that 90% of this review has to do with my hairdresser than the actual salon. I've been with her for an incredibly long time and I've never had an instance where I've not liked the coloring and hairdos she's done! She's specially good at coloring! I got John to give me a short bob and he was wonderful. Very experienced. He cut it wet, then I left and did some shopping nearby and as my hair dried, I realized I wanted it even shorter (which John had actually recommended in the first place). I went back (about 1 hour later) and asked him to cut it shorter and he did! No additional fee. He was very nice and understanding about it. About 2 months later, I came back in for a trim and made the mistake of not scheduling with John. I received another woman whose name I forget, unfortunately, but she was tall and blonde and loves to talk about her motorcycle experience. She did a poor job and cut my hair dry, cutting only the outer layers. Now, a month later, my hair looks funny because the under-layers have grown out and are peaking out from underneath. I will definitely be requesting John from now on. All in all, still a very pleasant experience (everyone was so nice!) and very cheap for a woman's hair cut. read more

I went here with a 29 groupon i used. They have no idea how to use group on, they treat their groupon customers like less, because you got a deal ignoring that is a marketing tool to obtain and retain potential clients. Fernando cut my hair, and he was a complete disaster. He chopped off ALL OF MY HAIR into terrible layers, when all i wanted was to cut my ends. He cut over 10 inches of my hair, I am completely miserable and would never in my life go there again. What makes me upset is that there is no way they have 4 stars, because there are 27 "hidden" reviews with people commenting that the same thing happened to them. As a black female it was very hard for me to find a stylist on the upper east side close to where I live. I started going to Nancy when I had short, damaged hair. Her extensive experience in the industry, recommendations for conditioning treatments, modest trims and her overall expertise has transformed my hair. She goes above and beyond for her customers. For example. she would go out of her way to source special products to have on hand that were gentle and tailored to my hair. It has grown substantially (it started at my chin and now is down my back) since we started and is healthier than ever. I've been here a few times. I went in for a haircut today, which was a fine enough experience. Their walk-in special is $40. As I was getting my haircut, my stylist, Alice, asked me if I wanted a blow dry. I said I was fine and didn't want a blow dry. She did her very best to convince me to have it dried so that we could "check the haircut." When I was checking out, they charged me $80. Their explanation was that it wasn't the walk-in special anymore because she blow dried my hair. No difference in price was ever communicated to me when convincing me to have the dry. Alice tricked me into getting my hair dried so she could charge me more. This whole situation was completely ridiculous, especially charging double the price just to blow hot air on my hair. Most of those involved in resolving this situation were incredibly rude, especially Alice. I will never go back to this place again, and I do not recommend anyone going to an establishment that allows such shady practices to occur. read more

Horrible I went it in just for a toner .... and i had a series of three people .. one who was the consultant, one washing my hair , and other drying my hair .... what ever they did completely dried my hair to a point it feels like a dry Brillo pad and darkened my hair from a bright ash blonde with platinum tone to a gold dingy orange blonde with just a toner ..... I have never in my life had my hair damaged to badly and completely distorted the color in my hair and I had to run to ulta and buy a cream right after to put in my hair to hydrate my hair ASAP because they damaged it .... never again read more

You know how you feel after a good hair cut? You've been treated well and you walk out thinking, I can't ever make my hair look like that. I don't feel that way. I'll admit a Groupon brought me in the door along with the proximity to the subway. I made an appointment 3 days in advance. When I arrived, I had to wait 25 minutes to get my hair washed. Because they only have one woman who washes hair and puts color on. The hostess told me she was taking too long. Finally I got to have my hair washed. The woman kept on rubbing my neck and pressing way too hard! If she's not careful she could damage someone's vertibrae. I got in my stylists chair. Asked her name. Joanne, she said. Her English wasn't wonderful, so we had a little difficultly communicating. I told her exactly what I want (same length everywhere, get rid of dead ends). How short, she asked. About an inch or so, but please get rid of my dead ends and keep it one length. Ok, she said and cut my hair on an angle. I asked for it to be blow dried straight. This was hands down the worst blow out I have ever had. It looks like I straightened it, has no specialness to it and now I am headed home to make it look better for the important work event, I mentioned 3 or 4 times. Yes, they offered to fix it, but since it started late, and I had to get to a store to pick something up before it closed I said, I would just do it myself. read more

I live right next door to this place, so when I saw a deal on KGB I knew I had to get it! Needless to say, when I walked in to ask about the deal, they totally changed the whole thing! They insisted that the deal was not for double process color, but just for a root touch up. When I asked if I could do something comprable, the colorist, Grace, said she would do it but I had to pay an EXTRA $50. My deal was valued at $140. I ran home to google pricing on the dye job I wanted, and every place said it only cost $50 to begin with. I even called the salon across the street. I returned to the salon after canceling meetings with clients to get my hair colored, and told the colorist that I would only pay an extra $25. That now would value my deal at $165! She told me she wasn't bargaining, and then said she was not going to do my hair anymore. I spoke to the manager who was completely unaccommodating. I asked him how he allowed his staff to blatantly tell people "NO" when they want something done. Grace literally said she didn't want to do "all of that work" and not get paid any money and I should find someone else to do it. The manager said he couldn't make her do something she didn't want to do. I asked if he went across the street to CITYMD because of a health problem, and the nurse said "NO" what he would think about that. After over 30 minutes of arguing with him about his unprofessional staff and their sudden desire to change a deal that they had already established, the manager said I could go to the other location, but would have to pay an extra $75 for the color I wanted! That would mean I had $215 worth of services? They only charge $30 for a cut, and $90 for double process. Needless to say, I am getting my voucher back from KGB, and will never step foot in Excel again. read more

Yikes! Now I know why they have $29 living social deals for a cut and blowout! I was just waiting for John Quinones to walk out and tell me I was on a hidden camera show. I think Living Social customers are given to the "not so professional" stylists. All I wanted was a couple inches cut off and my layers shortened. The stylist began by insulting my hair and telling me it had no shape. She then asked me if I wore my hair mostly curly or straight. I said curly, but I sometimes wear it straight and that I wanted it blow dried straight today. She lost it at this point and started to get angry! "Well, it can't be both! You're going to have to tell me which way you wear it so I know how to cut it! I can either cut a straight hair style or a curly hair style!" I'm thinking to myself, has she never known someone to go curly and straight? When I asked her to do shorter layers in the front, her response was "I'm a professional, and that's not what will look good! You're telling me one thing and then asking for another!" This woman is scolding me in front of the entire salon! At the end, she told me I should learn to love my curls. Great walk-in price! For 21 dollars (+tip) I can't really complain about my wash and cut. I wish the layers didn't look so choppy and were more textured. But that's something that only Toni and Guy graduates seem to understand and I can't fathom paying 200 dollars for a haircut at this point in my life (Graduate Student, FML). Other than that, the salon is very well kept and the staff is very friendly. I wish that the stylists looked at your hair dry before you are sent to the washing station. I was very nervous to go at new place as I didn't had hair cut for a year. I called them the reception answered immediatly and schedule my appointment as requested. When I arrived its a huge place with very friendly environment. As soon as I arrived they got my hair washed which I loved it the lady gave me very good hair massage while washing. After that I got hair stylist VIVIAN . She was the best. She gave me the exact hair cut I asked . I bought a stellar Groupon for Excel Hair Salon (2 massages, 2 blowouts, and 2 scalp massages for $89!). Massage: While I was slightly taken aback by the lack of a sheet/full-body towel to cover myself with (you're basically lying on the table naked with a washcloth over your bum) the massage I got was great. Inga was a very nice woman and all in all, I was very pleased with the pressure and length of the massage. Scalp Massage: Never got it. The woman washing my hair did not understand English very well, so when I tried to kindly remind her about the scalp massage, it must have been lost in translation. She did a great job washing my hair, but I would've liked to receive the services promised in the Groupon. Hair Process: Blah. The guy really didn't do a good job-- there are still a few frizzy pieces that weren't blown-out properly and all in all, he looked miserable the entire time and kept making gestures to other people about how out of control my hair was-- there's a mirror in front of me... I can see what you're doing. The salon itself is clean, spacious, and very nice. The chairs by the sinks are awesome as well since they're tilted which prevents any water from dripping down the back of your shirt during a hair wash. I to.d her I did not care for the job she did and she told me " You only paid $30, you did not pay for the product" I should have replied " No, I didn't pay for a good papplication" She also made me wait a good 15-20 minutes after my hair was rinsed until she cut my hair. If you have ethnic, curly hair, definitely stay far away from this salon! But NO ONE should consider their services. I went in with the best head of curls seeking to go blonde. I brought in a model pic to provide a realistic color for my hair texture and style: from dark to blonde. Nothing unusual. I was told that at worst my curls might get dry, as expected, but never irreversibly damaged. Who strips hair completely of its protein so much so that it won't curl? With all the new advents in color products, how can the salon get this so wrong? I was left with no choice but to chop my hair off. Every salon I went to thereafter to repair my hair said the salon is inexperienced and using dated products and approach. Excel failed and I paid the price. For one, the color wasn't even achieved. I walked out with orangish blonde. Second, my hair lacked any texture to be styled. It was hard, fragile, and dead. I wore caps until I could get to a salon and have it chopped off completely, but even then I had to make ado with the miserable color. The horror! Third, I was charged a whopping $295 before the service was complete because the owner had to close the register for the day and I was left with the colorist. I most definitely wouldn't have paid for an atrocious service had I seen the result. I have since reported Excel to the Better Business Bureau. The salon dared to place blame on me saying I chose to take the risk. Very poor business practice and customer relations. They're assess risk and the "expert," not gave me pay for their inability. Without refunding my money or seeking to remedy their wrong, I strongly recommend staying as far away from Excel for (1) they can't handle coloring, and (2) they don't own or right their wrong, and (3) customer relations are the worst. Shame on Excel (for being anything but their namesake), as I was forced to lose years of hair growth by chopping off their major failure and they comfortably had me pay for it, too! read more

Bought a Groupon for $55 (wash, root touch up and cut) Joanna, my stylist said the existing color of my hair and a root touch up that she'll do won't match and I see her point. So when she suggested to fix my highlights and give me a gloss treatment I said go ahead (but had doubts) And it was amazing! From orange-y hair color to a very nice highlights.
