I've been here twice over the moon both times. After being unhappy at four other salons, have nothing but utmost praise for Shear D'art. The care they take treating you kindly along with truly knowing what they're doing is unrivaled. My hair has never looked better. All they want is for you to be happy when you leave. And I have to say, both times I got the best shampoo I have ever had complete with a head rub, the lovely woman going the extra mile. They aim to please, something you don't see anymore. I have been getting highlights for 20 years and this is the worst experience I have ever had. Upon arrival I told them I wanted to try bayalage and they told me my hair already was bayalage and then instead proceeded to place foils in my hair. I probably should have stopped the process there but I was a bit confused about what was going on and thought perhaps they were transitioning between the two. The color: A full head of highlights took an hour and 40 minutes to place. The process was remarkably slow in comparison to the usual 40 minutes I am accustomed to. Afterwards my hair was streaky, orange, with persistent dark roots (see photos). It looks entirely unnatural and nothing like the photos I presented them with. I communicated this to them and they offered to fix it but the process took so long I had to leave. The cut: The right side is longer than the left overall an Asymmetric haircut. The blowout: The technique used to blow out my hair was archaic. No products were placed in my hair to protect it and the stylist proceeded to scorch my hair and fry it- inevitably causing severe damage. A portion of my scalp also burned in the process and a day later it remains red, painful, and is starting to peel. The Cost: My friend who has been going to this salon for years told me she pays $65 for a haircut and $200 for her highlights. I received a bill for $410- $290 for highlights and $120 for a cut. I questioned this and they insisted it was the correct amount. After tip I paid $500 for the worst hair experience I have ever had. Why I received a much higher price than my friend is unclear and the team was unwilling to explain this to me. Customer service: The staff was actually quite kind and willing to fix the issues. However given the fiat pricing and the terrible hair color and scalp burning I elected not to return to have my hair fixed. Overall: Horrible, hideous unnatural coloring that took an excessively long amount of time to do. The process was physically painful with damage occurring to my hair and scalp. Avoid this salon at all costs. read more

I found about Shear D'Art through a friend of a friend. Trying a new salon can be daunting as most NY salons I had tried were full of pretension. Not here. The whole staff from receptionist to shampooist is so warm. All of them understand the meaning of good service. My stylist, Tiffany, is MAGIC. Mentioning her makes me fearful word will get out and I will have a tough time getting an appointment. She's timely, friendly and laid back. When I'm low on funds, Tiffany never makes me feel bad about not wanting a blow out. Most importantly, she just cuts hair really well. I will follow her where ever she goes...but I really hope she stays here as the whole place is adorable. *Note the ONLY complaint is their lack of a waiting area. But luckily I've never had to wait. read more

For the UES, there are a ton of other hair places to choose from, but I'll only go to Shear Dart from now on. The salon was clean and the people were friendly, plus my haircut was only $45 (cut and blowdry). My stylist at Shear Dart took her time to ask me about what I wanted and didn't try to sell me any products (often the case at other salons). I've tried other local salons such as Hair Farfalle and felt very rushed from the minute I walked in. Overall, I am very happy with the service I received and hope that you will be too. read more

I have been using Shear D'art Salon for probably 10 years now, but enough is enough. I live in NJ and have never found a great place that can do hair, so from a suggestion of a family member, my mom, sisters, and I started using Shear D'art. I typically go to Tiffany for my haircut. Don't get me wrong, when she takes her time, she does a great job. However my experience last Saturday was the final straw and I will not be returning. I came in about 10 minutes late for my appt (my Uber driver was idle for about 10 minutes and I had to cancel and get a new one). Tiffany was cleaning the shampoo chair and once complete she told me to sit for my wash and then proceeded to tell me since I was 15 minutes late for my appt I would do my wash and she would start cutting my hair and then have me wait while she attended another customer coming in and would then blow dry and dry cut my hair after. I appreciated the open communication and had no problem as I understood I was late. Interestingly after my shampoo (I love the woman who shampoos hair), I sat with Tiffany and she barely asked what I wanted aside from cutting my dead ends. She proceeded to cut my hair for maybe 10 minutes when her other customer came in. Mind you, I checked my phone and this was around 1:35pm - this was curious to me as either the the customer was 5 minutes or she was 25 minutes early. Either way it was clear that the customer was booked over my appt and I wasn't given priority (when I called to make my appt I was offered either a 1pm or 2pm slot which clearly means something fishy was happening). In any case after maybe 10 minutes max of cutting and barely checking if my hair was even, Tiffany stopped and put my hair up and attended the other customer. She came back about 25 minutes later which was insane. And didn't even continue cutting, she just stating blow-drying! Some new customers came in and there were several distractions that made her walk away about 10 times during drying my hair!!! After the drying was finally complete, she didn't even bother to dry cut like she said she would and didn't even check my hair again to see if it was even - I wanted angled and layered hair but I don't even know what I got. I had to specifically tell her btw I have side bangs can you check and cut them a bit more? The best part was her telling me how great the haircut was as if she knew she was guilty for not spending more time. The rushing through the appt has happened several times before with my entire family, but this was the most egregious time it's happened. The experience was HORRIBLE and not worth the $68+tip. Unfortunately, my family and I will not be returning. The other hair dressers are very nice and do good jobs and I wish them luck but I can't continue to be a customer after my experience. read more

A friend of mine referred me to Shear Dart Salon when I complained about the high cost of hair color and cut every 5-6 weeks. She recommended Tiffany and I went with her recommendation. Boy, was she right! Tiffany is fabulous as a hair cutter, hair colorist and as a professional to see on a regular basis. She's a pleasure to work with. I just had my "overhaul" a few days ago and I got change for a hundred dollar bill. I would have had to spend almost twice that at my old salon--and they would never be open on a Sunday! I've been to those considered to be the best and have been disappointed and dropped a pretty penny to boot. (I could tell you stories...) And I must mention Valentino, who gives great shampoo and maybe the best head massage in all of NYC. A real treat and she's a doll, too. In fact, everyone at this salon is so nice every time I'm there. And if that's not enough, the music they play is some wonderful blend of, somehow, all the songs I love. I'm a Boomer that's heard decades of music and a music lover, as many of us are, and this salon even has great taste in music, as far as this Boomer is concerned. It's a place that I can't help singing out loud to practically every song I hear. When I come into the salon. everyone welcomes me with such a genuine "How are you?" When I leave, I feel the same genuinely warm and seemingly special "So long. You look great!" I cannot recommend this salon with more enthusiasm. Shear Dart Salon is one of the best kept secrets on the Upper East side. They are one of the friendliest staff's I have ever met. Karen is not only a great stylist but fantastic with color. I have been coming to Shear D'Art for a while now and I felt the need to rave about the wonderful stylists and staff at Shear D'Art (especially after my friend had a terrible experience at a different salon). I have nothing but great things to say about this place! The receptionists are nice and helpful. The stylists are skilled and friendly. Oh, and you will also get the best shampoo of your life! I'd been getting my hair cut by Randy since 2001; I changed jobs and it got very difficult for me to get to the UES, so I went on a quest for a salon and a cutter as talented as he. Well, 2 years and a lot of very expensive, very bad haircuts later, I am back with Randy for life. He still had my color in his file! After having a very bad experience up the street at Vanilla Hair Spa, I've been reluctant to get my hair cut again. My roommate recommended this place to me, so I figured I'd give it a shot. I walked in after work one day and was immediately taken by Karen. I told her that I wanted to keep my hair on the longer side, and was a little nervous that it would come out too short. She was great- she walked me through everything she was doing, and made sure to cut little by little off so I could give her input on whether or not it was too short/too long... She also offered her own suggestions on what she thought would look good (a few long layers, some short layers in front...). Although I was just a walk-in, and she had another customer waiting after me, she took her time, and never rushed me. I will definitely be back here again. read more

I needed a hair cut and bad. I had just let it grow out enough from the last place I went to where they did a hack job .....the placed closed a week later! So on my way to the train I found Shear d'art .....went today ....with much trepidation.....but I must say it was just great. I loved karen. she listened and was so focused. Supercuts Salon quality. Prices are lower than many upper east side salons, but higher than Supercuts. Lots of openings so it's easy to get a same day appointment. I've seen Tiffany do a good job trimming a customer's long hair. She is friendly and manages the salon. If looking for a particular style, this isn't the right place. They give the standard cut taught in the vocational class, so the hair falls and flairs one way. A word of warning, there is a male working there named Randy. He will ignore everything that you tell him you want and don't want. He will make you look like a cartoon character. I wanted my hair to extend from the left part outward to the right as far as the edge of my head. One section was grown to the correct length already and I pointed this out to him and told him not to make it shorter. I waited months for this result. He took this section of hair and cut it one inch long, and around it 3 inches long, so that I have a hideous looking curl at the top of my head and a hole with a sharp inward slant extending to the edge of my head. I will have to cover my head now for several months. He shows his dominance by ensuring that the female customer gets exactly what they don't want. He doesn't care what the consequences are to the customer or to the salon. If you have no choice but to find yourself in his chair, keep your hand near his wrist ready to push it away or clip the hair that you don't want him to cut, if any section of hair is correct already. This is necessary to protect your image. If convenient, Supercuts is recommended over this salon because of this guy. The manager is aware of the problem. If on a tight budget, another option is going to a barber shop that serves women and men. Prices are half. read more

I went to Shear D'art for the first time when I first moved to the city & lived in the area. It looked like it was nice but not too wildly expensive like some of the UES salons. I had some bad experiences at other hair salons in the area where I would leave completely broke but not necessarily in love with the cut & color. Shear D'art & my stylist, Jenny, is consistently perfect so even as I've moved around living in different areas of the city, I will ALWAYS trek back to the UES for my hair appointments! I've only ever seen Jenny & I won't make an appointment unless it's with her. I have medium brown long hair & heavily highlight it blonde - she makes it look natural & the shade is perfect. She never trims too much & listens to exactly what I need for each visit. She usually blowdries my hair for free (not a full blowdry, or style, but just enough so I can see the cut/color & am not leaving with sopping wet hair). The prices are great - I never feel like I paid too much & I'm always leaving happy. One time when I felt like it wasn't quite blonde enough, she went back over it again AND threw in a deep conditioning treatment for free (which I suspect is actually quite expensive) just because she didnt want my hair to be too rough from the double highlighting.
