My family and I stopped here on a Friday afternoon for a drink, we showed up right before the crowd! This is a popular place for a reason, it's a classic brewery in a beautiful spot in town. The parking lot was large and had plenty of spaces, the beer selection was wide, and they also had nonalcoholic options including a hop water! The staff were friendly and everything felt very clean. There's a band some nights, but the stage is in the back, so it's not too loud. We tried a flight which had some good ipas and dark beers. I settled on the Russian imperial ale which was outstanding. Love this brewery! So nice and inviting and definitely a must during a nice MN summer day! We came here to get my free pub pass drink and ended up having more drinks and just enjoying the space. They have a nice patio for when the weather gets nicer as well. Our bartender was very friendly and even offered us samples to help make our selection. A perfect spot for summer in my favorite of small Minnesota cities Excelsior. A modern but not pretentious brew pub. The garage door was open to the patio on this perfect temperature day. Walk up to the bar and choose your selection of the many tap brews. If crowded they'll rush another server to the next serve station. The large wall menu has brew in categories to non-alcoholic drinks. Tables of different sizes scattered about. Very informal but still seems organized. There is a take out case. A great spot for a brew. I was staying just down the road dog sitting this past week and I made here twice. They are dog friendly so I made sure to direct one of our walks out this way on a sunny Thursday spring afternoon. The place was buzzing with happy Minnesotans and friendly bartenders (brew-tenders?). Service was super quick and there were tables available. There was even a Girl Scout going table to table selling cookies. Pretty good business model if you ask me. There was also a private party going on in the back. The second time I came was on a Saturday evening around 7. They had a live band and the place was packed! There was also a surprise birthday party going on, so seating was quite limited -- but enough standing room. I tried the "A day at the peach sour" and the "spresso milk stout". I loved both and would get both again. I think next time I might try a flight to sample even more of their offerings. I will for sure be back this summer for the patio!! read more

This place is AWESOME!!! We found parking on the street as we came on a busy night as they had a cover band. They had 2 parking lots available, so plenty of parking even though it was packed. The bartenders were great and fun to watch with how many cups they could stack when walking around. They had a nice setup for the band we saw, but not much for seating room. I think they could have made more tables/chairs work somehow. For beer, I only had the one and it was called Hops Wave and it was a very good IPA as it wasn't super hoppy and had some very good fruit flavor to it. I would def come back here again as I think it would be fun even without entertainment. read more

We went to see a friend's band play, and had the best night! I thought Excelsior was hella far away, but that's just an opinion. I did know I could walk in with my own food so I got myself a giant ice cream cone while my spouse had a beer. I dont drink much beer. But! Sour beers! Seltzers! This is my kind of thing. I have had the sour fruit beers at many breweries, and the one I had here was definitely right in the top tier! We were standing when a couple invited us to join their table. How nice! They were a local pair who walk to this brewery almost every weekend. Super friendly! I'd guess the crowd changes a little based on who the band is, but also I suspect it's often a little bit older and a little bit kinder than you might find in other more urban breweries. My buddies and I decided to start our summer tour of Tap Rooms that have started to pop up all over Minnesota, it's awesome! Excelsior Brewing sits in the small town of Excelsior by Lake Minnetonka, one on the largest lakes right near the Metropolitan Twin Cities. We had brunch at Lago Tacos before hitting the tap room, which was a perfect start. I ordered my buddy a beer on their buy a friend a beer wall, which you can add your name to a list of people you bought beers for. I also ordered a 4 beer flight, and I liked the Bridge Jumper IPA the best, but they didn't have any bad beers at all. Jumper was a nice and hoppy IPA with a happiness quotient of 10. I ordered 2 more Bridge Jumpers while I was in the large brew room. Tons of stainless in the back fermenting, and mashing, and all the good stuff that breweries do. They had a blue grass live band in the corner, which was a huge win. I love me some blue grass music. A buddy that lives on Lake Minnetonka was able to come last minute, which was awesome. I hadn't seen him in about 6 months. Great laughs and good times. Helpful staff took our picture and an overall perfect experience with friends. Thanks Excelsior! read more

I rarely ever find a beer that I like but this is still one of my fav breweries. Why? They are located just down the street from Maynard's where I basically spend my summer. They have live music from bands that cover Pearl Jam, The Police and The Rilling Stones to name just a few. There is never a cover for live music. The husband loves to fill his growler several times per year. There is a large lot that is free to park in. They have plenty of space but it does get quite packed during live shows so please leave your claustrophobic friends at home those nights. Everything is pretty much the same as other breweries: no food but you can bring in whatever outside grub you please or have it delivered from several local joints, dogs and kids galore. BUT NEW RULE: some cry babies out there complained loud enough that now dogs are only allowed on the patio, not in the tap room. Bologna, if you ask me. Who'd you rather hang with in a tap room? A chihuahua or a child? Exactly. Hopefully the rule will change back in the future. read more

I'm a bizarre person to review a brewing company because I don't drink alcohol. That said, I asked the bartender for my options for no sugar and no caffeine drinks (oh yes, I'm that kind of person!) and they had a $1 on tap lime fizzy water. Yes! It was light and delicious. There was live music (no cover charge whatsoever) and I was actually meeting friends there to play cribbage which I believe is every Thursday starting at 6 pm. Our table was a dock so it was a little awkward to sit on the end, I basically ended up hugging the dock pole. Otherwise, your typical brewery in the back, tables in the front brew pub. Oh, and they let you bring in your own food so people were getting pizzas delivered and my group brought in Mexican. I'm assuming that means they don't serve any food but don't trust me, I'm a picky food eater too! read more

Add Excelsior Brewing to the long list of fantastic Twin Cities breweries. Sure, it may not garner the recognition of Surly or the hipster market of LynLake, but, damn, they do push out some fantastic brews. Is the drive to Excelsior worth it, for beer aficionados? Sure! At least once. As a hops lover, I tasted their Bridge Jumper IPA, which supposedly has hints of both passion fruit and papaya. I didn't find any papaya, but I did get some floral, citrusy-ness. Whatever. It's delicious, and I would buy a six-pack, for my fridge in Atlanta if they distributed it down there. The lively brewery also has a stage, for bands. When I visited a few days before Christmas, I saw a jazz ensemble rock out. And while I listened to their tunes, I hung out with my friends and a couple of beautiful doggies (one lab and golden retriever). I support dog-friendly establishments, fo sho! The staff who ran my order were nice, and they have ample. And if their lot is at max capacity then there's always the surrounding neighborhood. read more

Excelsior has ample space indoors & outdoors. They were really cool with us grabbing takeout from one of the local restaurants & eating our food on their patio. Which would usually just be seen as normal, but right now it was really nice since many local establishments have pretty limited seating. One of the newer places in Excelsior and for sure a bookmark! I will disclose I'm not a huge beer fan, but the amber and the blonde are outstanding. It is a very simple warehouse type place, but don't let that fool you. They have bands, special events, it's always busy, indoor and outdoor seating. I love the logo and bought myself a visor. Nice room! Have been here before so had a pretty good idea of what to expect. Ordered the flagship sampler (Big Island Blond, Bridge Jumper IPA, Bitteschlappe Brown Ale, XLCR American Pale Ale) which was really good. Then from there focused on the Bridgejumper IPA from there on. The guy behind the bar was very helpful with samples so you could make the right decisions regarding what you wanted to drink and there is an assortment of games and other activities besides mingling with others to pass the time. Pet friendly as well as they seem to accommodate dog owners. There is a nice assortment of brews to choose from and more styles than I can remember right now. Its located in an older concrete building just off the main drag in Excelsior and is worth a stop if in the area. There is no food menu but wouldn't imagine it would be a problem having food delivered to the brewery. Great place. read more

I was a little surprised that this is a warehouse, essentially, the actual brewery, the tasting room like a kegger with free flowing taps, free pretzels, and a bunch of tables. Speakers and disco lights give away the later evening festivities. As far as the beer, I prefer Steel Toe for the small micro brews, but the Ale is still very good and growlers are reasonably priced. It will do well because it holds a unique niche in the Excelsior business district. read more

FYI - if you happen to hear that they have their girl scout cookie and beer pairing, RUN don't walk, as fast as you can. It's legit and runs out very quickly. The reason being that they actually brew the beer with the cookies that it's paired with and damn it makes for some tasty brews. On the regular days of brewing they have some solid beers in their lineup, ranging from the yearly options as well as the seasonal and 1 off's. From my not so frequent visits to this spot, there has always been plenty off beers that I enjoyed and would easily drink more than just one pint of. The taproom is a decent size with a stage for their live music shows. Whats cool about the space is it wraps around towards the open brewing floor to the patio area, which you will frequent during those warm summer days and cool fall nights. If you happen to need a break from drinking (not sure why you would) you can venture out into downtown Excelsior which is right outside the doors of the taproom. Or take stroll by the lakeside. There is plenty of food options to get you back and ready in drinking mood. I only wish you were closer. read more

Excelsior has never been tops on my list of local beers, but we recently made a trip out to the brewery and I have to say my impression has definitely improved. They were tapping their May Maibock at the time, which I found to be absolutely delicious. Malty and rich, it was really a great beer. I had several :-) Location-wise, the brewery is located right in downtown Exelsior and has a nice, relaxed and open vibe. People are friendly and not overbearing. It really is a place where you could easily kick back and have a few or pass an evening with friends. I am sure we will be back! read more

I think your opinion of this place will vary depending on what you're looking for. We go to a lot of tap rooms in the Twin Cities and are generally used to sitting and talking with friends or playing games while enjoying a craft beer. That's just what we've gotten used to. We've been to Excelsior Brewing twice (both times in the winter) and found it to be crowded, loud and cold. Both times there was a band playing - and I will say the bands were really good! It just meant that we were standing and shouting to talk to our friends. (Yes, I could have done my due diligence and checked ahead of time to see if there was going to be live music. Then I would have gone in with different expectations.) So, if you're looking for good beer and live music and don't mind standing while enjoying both - check out this place! Beer and music are really good! If you're looking for conversation or playing games, go elsewhere or just at a non-busy time. I would like to try it in the summer to see if there is a different feel. read more

We had a good experience at Excelsior Brewing. The staff was nice and happy to assist you in selecting a beer you would enjoy. They offered samples, if you were debating between a few different choices. The beer was great. The patio and indoor seating area were both a bit small, but we loved the dock-style tables. Not a whole lot of seating. It is a very family-friendly place. There were many young children, and non-alcoholic beverages for them to enjoy. They had a craft fair on the day we went, which made it difficult to view the indoor taproom and brewing area. We particularly enjoy being able to see those areas, so that was a bit disappointing. It is in a really cute area. Conveniently, Olive's Pizza is next door and delivers directly to your table at the brewery. It is a little pricey, but that is pretty typical of the area. read more

I had a cherry wheat which had the perfect amount of cherry flavor, not too overpowering but definitely noticeable. My fiancé got the sour beer which was also really tasty. There is plenty of seating both indoor and outdoor. You can bring your own food or hang with your dog on the patio. They have a ton of board games inside and a live music schedule. Excelsior Brewing is a part of the burgeoning craft beer community in the Twin Cities. The Tap Room opened on the 4th of July at noon, and we walked through the door at 12:08. The Brewery is located about 3 blocks off of the lake in a semi-hidden area, but it is well worth seeking it out. It seemed amusingly appropriate that a person dressed as Captain Jack Sparrow sauntered into the building during our visit, and pretended to be drunk, swinging a growler freely through the air. The tap room is very open, and directly off of the brewery and milling rooms. I would imagine at this point the tap room doubles as work space when customers are not sipping samples from the taps....but they already have designs to double their size by the fall of 2013, and sell their beer in cans at that point in time. We were fortunate to be able to taste the first batch of beer ever produced by Excelsior Brewing Company, and it did not disappoint. On tap was Bridge Jumper IPA, a pale ale with a kick and a great aftertaste. The hops had a citrus snap, and a sweet aftertaste, with a 9% alcohol volume that provided a nice kick. Speaking with Peter, the owner, he stated they would be brewing future batches at a slightly lower alcohol volume without sacrificing the overall taste. Soon to follow the IPA that we sampled, there will be a Pale Ale, and a Blonde offered in the coming weeks. All beer can be purchased by the pint for 5 bucks in the tap room, or in a growler for a very reasonable 15 bucks, that includes a 5 dollar deposit for the bottle. I am looking forward to future visits to the taproom, and trying the other styles of beer that make their way out of Excelsior. read more

They get 3 stars as the location and overall brewery taproom is fairly solid. They have some nice summer get togethers. BUT, their beer is pretty rough. Definitely below average when compared to other MN breweries. Would love for another brewery to come to excelsior. read more
