ILLEGAL BEHAVIOR - SCUMMY BUSINESS PRACTICES - AVOID!…read more We've been using Chet's for a couple of years now due to their proximity to where we live, however we will NEVER be returning our vehicles for service here after our experiences during the last few visits. Last Tuesday, my wife's car went into limp mode. We had it towed here just to get the diagnostic work done to see if it was something worth fixing. It had a failed coil pack a few months ago that she drove with to get it home. This caused premature failure of the first catalytic converter, which is exactly what the mechanic (Matt) found wrong with it. On Thursday, they called upon finding this out and asked if they wanted us to proceed with further diagnostics (to check if the second cat had failed as well) and repairs. They quoted us $1500 additional parts/labor for an upstream catalytic converter replacement. I told them yes to the diagnostics, but to call me before they proceeded with any further work, as I thought the price was ridiculous. I had a feeling that what I said wasn't received properly, so exactly 5 minutes later I called back and was explicitly clear that we ONLY wanted them to perform additional diagnostic labor to check if the downstream cat had failed. I know I spoke to the same person both times because the number they called from and I called back to is different from their office number. They said they would be sure to tell the mechanic not to proceed with the repairs. Assuming that this would be a 10 minute job (dropping a scope into the downstream cat), I went in Friday to check if we could coordinate payment for the diagnostic efforts and arrange a tow for the car. The front desk employee (Roman) tells me the total was $1700 ($200 diag, $1500 parts/labor for parts replacement). After I explained the situation, he went into the back, apologized for the miscommunication issue, and said they would get the parts removed ASAP and make us whole in terms of payment. I figured this was reasonable, mistakes happen, and they were owning up to it. Come Monday afternoon, we called to see if the vehicle was ready to go. I spoke with Jeff on the phone initially who put the mechanic Matt on the line. He explained that since the parts were installed and the car had been driven (50 feet to the parking lot), the catalytic converter wasn't returnable and we would be on the hook for the full parts/labor as quoted. I told him that wasn't happening, to take the parts off and give us our vehicle back as left. Making a customer pay for unauthorized repairs is EXPLICITLY ILLEGAL behavior, under Wisconsin consumer protection law. My wife went in Tuesday morning to check on the vehicle (1 week since drop off) and they told her it would be a couple more hours before they got the part off. I called them back Tuesday afternoon, and they are now trying to get us on the hook for just the parts and they would comp the labor. They were charging $700 for the part. The vehicle is 11 years old and worth $3,000 at most, we are just trying to get another year out of it and do not need pricey OEM parts. I told Matt this was unacceptable, told him the state law that protects consumers in this exact condition, and let him know we would be taking them to small claims court if they would not honor our request. He blew me off and tried denying responsibility. We called back one more time, asking to speak to only the owner, at which point we were finally told that they would only be charging us for the diagnostic labor as authorized. When we went to pick up the vehicle Wednesday morning, and they only charged us for the diagnostic work as agreed. However, I took a glance under the hood and noticed the original catalytic converter was missing. I had to go back into the shop and ask for the part back, which is worth $50-100+ of scrap value. Come on. They have also charged us for snapping wheel studs that they overtightened in the first place. Tread carefully, these guys (or at least Jeff and Matt) will nickel and dime you for everything they can get away with.

Dave's a great mechanic, but most importantly he is HONEST. Zimbrick VW diagnosed my Tiguan and said I needed a new turbo for $2700. Desperate, I sought a second opinion from a well-known Madison VW repair shop. I was told the same thing but quoted $2400. Through the grapevine I heard of European Autowerks. Dave told me he could probably do the repair for $2000. Grateful for saner price, I agreed. The next day, Dave called to tell me he was pretty sure that the turbo was fine. But I did need a new diverter valve for $150. TWO reputable service centers had insisted that I needed a new turbo. And from the research I'd done, I agreed with them. Dave said otherwise. Five months later, my Tiguan is still running great. He could have easily charged me $2000 and I would have been grateful. Instead, he did the right thing and made me a customer, and advocate, for life. In addition to being ethical, Dave strikes me as the kind of mechanic you want working on your car. More than simply being competent, he has a genuine curiosity to figure out the problem. I really can't recommend this place enough.

I drove my new car into a curb on a snowy Saturday. They were closed, but when the tow truck brought my car there it just happened that Scott (the manager) was in the store and he let us in. Scott worked with me to figure out what should be done and how to communicate with insurance, and he took ownership of getting the right fixes done so that I could get back on the road. Being disabled & on limited income we needed someone to inspect the Jeep to know if it was safe to drive. Honesty is critical for vehicles when you are traveling on highways with your loved ones. We bought 5 vehicles during my marriage at 1 dealership where we experienced being lied to learning that dealership was telling us our jeep needed a new part that a second opinion told us that was not true. My neighbor told us of their mechanic being honest & not overcharging shared people were driving from other States to have him work on their vehicle. We learned their mechanic quit working for this same dealership but he was at their Madison Dealership shared with us he ethically & morally quit because this dealership owner was charging customers for repairs they did not need to keep money coming in to pay his payroll expenses validated our experience at this owner's second site scared us. He retired that we were looking for a new mechanic that Eagan's Automotive provided us with EXCELLENT SERVICE & were HONEST..... which we read on-line I am giving them my review as the REPAIRMAN you need to go for repairs. Disappointing Experience -- We Won't Be Returning-…read more This is a long one, but I feel it is important to share our experience. We were previous customers of Wrench's before the change in ownership, so when our vehicle needed work, we initially felt comfortable returning to a shop we had trusted in the past. Unfortunately, this experience was very different. We dropped our vehicle off overnight for an inspection and some needed work, including an issue with the trunk that would not fully open. The following day, we received a call informing us that the back windshield had spontaneously shattered while the vehicle was at their shop. We were told it was a huge mess and that they didn't know what had happened. We understand that unexpected things can happen. What became concerning was how the situation was handled. When we asked about security footage, we were initially told that there was footage. When we asked whether it showed our vehicle, we were then told that it only showed people coming and going. We were also told that additional footage existed but that someone would have to go through the entire day's footage to find anything. Our expectation was fairly simple: we hoped the shop would take responsibility for the broken window, replace it, and we would continue with the other work we had planned, including purchasing new tires from them. We also asked whether they had the neighboring body shop take a look at the trunk issue per their recommendation. Instead, the conversation became a back-and-forth about who would pay for the window. We were initially told the neighboring body shop was too busy, then that they wouldn't do it, and eventually that no one would be willing to install the glass. At this point, we were out of town and had a vehicle sitting at their property with a large missing window. After approximately a week and a half of back-and-forth, they finally agreed to have the glass replaced, but initially would not pay for it. After further discussion, they agreed to pay half, which was our suggestion. However, they did not provide us with a quote or keep us updated on the process.We repeatedly had to reach out ourselves asking basic questions: Had they found someone to install the glass? Was it being done? When would the vehicle be ready? Eventually, we were told our vehicle was finished--without any prior communication that the work had been completed. We were also told we should bring cash or a check because there would be a $30 credit card processing fee. When we asked how much we owed, they couldn't tell us the total. At that point, I did some research of my own. I called the first two auto glass companies that came up in a Google search, explained our situation, and both quoted us approximately $300-$400 for the replacement and said the installation would not be a problem. Wrench's ultimately chose a company in Illinois and the glass cost nearly $800. We were then presented with a bill of nearly $600 for the glass and an inspection fee. We were particularly frustrated by the inspection charge because the window broke while the vehicle was in their possession during the inspection, and we had no explanation for how or why it happened. After additional discussion, my husband was eventually able to get the inspection fee removed. The final cost to us was $388.03. What was most disappointing throughout this entire experience was the lack of communication, accountability, and customer service. At no point did we feel that there was genuine concern about what had happened to our vehicle or the inconvenience this caused us. Other than the initial "we're sorry, we don't know what happened" phone call, there was no meaningful apology or effort to make the situation right. We also never received the invoice we requested for the glass replacement, so we were left without documentation showing exactly what we were charged for. As people who have worked in small business, we understand that unexpected situations happen. What matters is how a business handles them. We would have been much more understanding if the situation had been handled with transparency, communication, and good customer service. We even intended to continue doing business with them and purchase new tires. Instead, this experience cost them not only our future business, but also our recommendation to friends and family. After nearly two weeks of having to repeatedly communicate, negotiate, and follow up just to get our vehicle back, we ultimately paid $388.03 and received our vehicle back in essentially the same condition it was in when we dropped it off, aside from the replacement of a window that broke while it was in their possession. Unfortunately, based on this experience, we will not be returning to Wrench's and cannot recommend them.
