I am autistic and oftentimes things like haircuts are difficult for me but Mags was kind, quick (yet very thorough), and just very profesh all around. I am low-income (living on a Section 8 subsidy in an HPD apartment) so normally I couldn't afford a quality haircut, but I was able to get one thanks to Mags' mutual aide efforts. This is my second time going to Jasmine and she is just the best, she knows exactly what to do and blend my roots in so amazingly. Today I just got a tone on my level 9 yellow yellow hair and a smudge root on my harsh regrowth. Jasmine is super professional yet super funny and is super communicative through the whole process so I always feel like my needs are perfectly met and that we're on the same page. It is worth every penny to go here for the wonderful experience you'll have. When I went in I was unsure of what haircut I wanted to go for and Megan helped talk me through the process, there was not one moment where I felt uncomfortable. Nightmare haircut at Exhibit salon by Tracy Vader. She will destroy your hair and then offer you her band stickers to make up for it. I'm now going elsewhere to cut to my shoulders because after 2 years of growing my hair and having photos along with a 10 min consult means absolutely nothing to this "pro". She will not care how bad her work is. I asked for a trim and some layers in the back, how this happened I'll never know. The video was my hair BEFORE her handiwork. I highly recommend letting a toddler cut your hair before seeing Tracy Vader at this salon, she is unfocused, reckless and doesn't listen to your consultation. The salon I'm going to to fix this said they've never seen such a hacked up uneven mess before and sadly there is no way to fix it without cutting more. Kristen Bretz is magic. Thanks to my friend who highly recommended her, I made an appointment for 2 weeks later (Call right now! She gets booked up fast!) for their first appointment at 12 noon. I walked into the salon and was blown away by the friendly receptionist and the funky decor. They were so nice! Kristen asked me what I was looking for, and added her own input, and we got to chopping. I love that she listened to me and gave me a cut that flattered my face. I LOVE MY HAIRCUT. Dren was the angel who I trusted to chop off 10 inches of hair and give me a lil French bob, and it was so wonderful! When I got my first haircut by a person other than myself in like 10 years (!! seriously), Dren was the one I trusted, and she listened really closely to my needs and boundaries and fears around cutting my hair, and communicated really beautifully throughout the process. I've been here many, many times since moving to the area over a year ago and I love it. It's very easy to book an appointment, either by using their website booking system, calling them, or doing it in person. Everyone at the front is very friendly. The salon is dog friendly too--I am not a dog person, but the dogs here are very sweet and friendly and it's great to play with them while waiting for my stylist! Big plus to the water dispenser, too. I've seen Aggie and Emily here and both are great. If you are looking to get bangs, definitely see one of them. Between cuts, if you need a bang trim, there's no additional cost (I always tip though, for the stylist's time!). Yes, the total cost for a haircut isn't cheap, but you get what you pay for, and I'd rather pay and trust in an experienced professional than get a hack job somewhere else! I have long hair so I'm always wary of getting most of it chopped off accidentally, but that has never been a worry for me here. I trust them 100% with my precious, precious hair. Usually, you couldn't pay me enough money to do anything that involves having to take the G train. For Exhibit, I will make an exception. In the two years I've lived in Manhattan, I've bounced around between salons and never really found anything or anyone that I loved. Everything was overpriced and I never walked out feeling thrilled with my cut. Enter: Exhibit and Lynnette the Lady Wizard. First of all, the entire time I was there, one of the stylists had her adorable puppy hanging out. Puppies are always a perk, I'm a sucker for puppies. But four-legged fuzz nuggets aside, Lynnette is the real star of this story. Lynnette was recommended by a friend and she surpassed all my expectations. Girlfriend is the unicorn of hair stylists: friendly, attentive, talented, AND affordable?! I know, I was shocked too. I can be fairly particular about my hair, which is absurdly thick and generally uncooperative, but Lynnette worked her sorcery and I ended up with the perfect cut and some seriously Pinterest-worthy balayage. I will definitely be back. For a cut/color that doesn't break my bank, and a lovely magical goddess with scissors, I guess I can suffer the G train every once in a while. read more

I accidentally mixed up my days and didn't manage to give the full 24hr notice and upon receiving my confirmation call (at 8pm- my appointment was supposed to be at 4- rather strange time to call and confirm...) I said I needed to cancel. Oh damn did the male receptionist let me have it! And though I totally understand I unintentionally created an inconvenience, I really don't think potential customers should be spoken to the way he proceeded to speak to me. I have lived in Brooklyn for almost 4.5 years and have had a hard time finding a stylist and colorist who could actually answer what I was looking for. Enter Lynnette from Exhibit A. This woman is AMAZING! I have thick, naturally wavy brown hair with heat damage that is rather hard to tame. Lynn turned my tresses into my dream hair. Lynn did an amazing job on subtle honey/caramel balayage on my light brown hair that looks sun kissed and natural. We also did a Brazilian Blowout and it has completely changed my hair. It feels so soft and I have zero frizz without it being weighed down. Lynnette also does incredible cuts. She was able to give my hair shape and life without it looking outdated. Everyone here is really nice and friendly, too. The receptionist was kind and offered me a beverage as soon as I arrived. The ladies will go out of their way to make you feel comfortable and accommodate your hair requests. I've finally found a stylist/colorist (Lynnette) and a salon I love in Brooklyn. Exhibit was an excellent experience from the beginning to the end. The receptionist on the phone took her time to discuss with me everything and confirmed that the best thing to do would be a consultation before the actual appointment. I was booked for a consultation with Lynette. And again dealing with the receptionist, Luke was a pleasure. I appreciate it, when you inform me about a possible delete, when you offer me a beer after a long day and a comfy seat with something to read. I went to Exhibit becuse I was kinda "lost" with my hair inspiration and needed some guidance (that moment when your Hair board on Pinterest get´s out of control). I told Lynette that I would like to keep the blonde but that I don´t want to deal with the roots issue any more. Add my natural color (ash blonde) and some fantasy colors (purple) and that I don´t want any golds/browns. I asked for a cut too, to allow my hair to grow healthy and add volume/movement. I couldn´t be happier that I was booked with Lynette. There is something about her that makes you feel very comfortable from the beginning on. She suggested an ombre with my natural hair color on the top, leaving the bright, platinum blonde framing my face and adding some purple on the bottom. She said that she will correct the layers from the last hair stylist and cut off the damaged hair. After the consultation I couldn´t wait to go to the actual appointment! I wasn´t dissapointment. Lynette repeated what we agreed on to do, got the book with hair colors to show me exactly which ones she will mix and from there on I was like: Yup girl, you got it! She cut my hair first while it was still dry (to have more control about the actual length, which is smart), then the blondes coloring. After we dried my hir to check the color ( very reassuring), she decided to bring my ashy blonde a little bit further down and add the fantasy purple. During the waiting time for the color to process everyone in the salon was making sure that I´m good. When I go to hair appointments I like to exchnge funny life stories with my stylist but I don´t need to be entertained the entire time. I´m pretty easy with that. Give me something to drink and something to read and I´m good. While Lynette was washing my hair, she was already saying that it looks awesome. You know that it will be good when your stylist is happy with her work. We dried my hair and I couldn´t believe that it turned out EXACTLY how I wanted it to be. Lynette finished the cut, added some curls and tipps on styling and I was done. The price was the same one she named during the consultation. Now it´s over a week since my appointment and I´m still in love with my hair. The colors hold (there were issues in the past where my hair wouldn´t keep the darker colors), the purple ombre is still vibrant with some lavender tones keeping the blonde shiny. My cut is very easy to style and I´m getting a lot of compliments from a lot of people asking where I got my hir done. I seem to be the odd one out, but I'm really dissatisfied with the styling of my hair. When I get my haircut, I love knowing I don't have to wash it for a few days bc the styling is so amazing, but that was not the case here, not in the slightest. I went in for a basic trim/wash and dry, and it looks like I dried my hair myself. The woman, Jen, not only parted my hair on the wrong side - even after I told her twice that I wanted it in the opposite direction - but also left a chunk of hair wet at the nape of my neck when she finished (I pointed it out to her). These complaints sound silly in and of themselves, but the end result is just lackluster, blah-looking hair with curls that look like they were created with a curling iron - it doesn't even look like I got my hair done, which you can usually tell after someone's had a hair cut. The cut itself is fine - all my split ends are gone - and Jen is sweet. Everyone there is really nice, in fact, but I am really unhappy with how my hair looks right now, and for $70+, it should look a lot better. I've already decided I'm not going back. I had an appointment with Julie, a new stylist to the salon, and she couldn't have been more accommodating to my needs. She listened to what I wanted, reviewed my inspirational photos, and talked with me how she could incorporate what I liked into a new style. My last stylist took literally about 5 minutes to cut my hair...Julie spent her time precisely and expertly transforming my long locks into a cute shoulder length 'do, that was exactly what I wanted! There was no awkward pauses, cattiness, or the like. She was professional, knowledgeable, and super passionate about what she does. In general, just a really positive and likable human being, and it really makes a difference when I'm biting my nails in my chair, waiting to see the end result. I was lucky enough to sit in Alice Shield's chair this past weekend. I had around 6 inches cut, a color correction, and also lightened it up with a Balayage Edge. She took her time and explained each part of the process to me, which really helped to make me feel comfortable. It was a laid back, youthful environment, but still very organized and professional. i did not wait at all for my appointment and everyone continuously checked in with me to make sure I was comfortable. Jocelyn is THE BEST. I found her after falling into an Instagram black hole and I'm so glad I did! I brought in a picture of a past cut she did I just had to have and I walked out with exactly what I wanted -- a fun, modern, choppy bob. At the end of the cut she also showed me how to curl my hair with a straightening iron so I can get the soft wavy curls she gave me when I style myself. My friends and family love it and I do too! I've been going to Exhibit for over a year now. Like most women, I am fussy about who handles my hair, and did a lot of Yelp research before booking an appointment. I have seen 3 different hairstylists, and have been satisfied with each experience. I have seen Alice the most though, and after my last haircut from her I received complements on the street about how it was the perfect haircut for my facial structure. All the women I have worked with are cool, friendly, easy to talk to, and attentive to my haircut wishes. Being an artist myself, I also like that the salon doubles as a mini gallery and caters to creative-types. The only thing I can say as a negative, is that the haircuts are a little expensive for my budget ($70+ before tip) which is why I don't go there more frequently. The stylists do offer free neck trims though, which helps the cut a little last longer. read more

LOVE LOVE LOVE! Moved to Brooklyn at the very end of last year and I looked at so many salon reviews not only in BK but also Manhattan. I had an amazing girl back home who worked wonders on my hair so I was very very hesitant. I decided to take a shot here and am SO happy I did. The place itself is adorable and is in the best part of Greenpoint (in my opinion lol) & there's a really great coffee shop right beside it. Everyone is super nice and the decor is incredible as well since they feature up and coming artists along their walls (hence the name Exhibit). To be honest I don't remember too much from the first time I went hair wise but it was good! The second time there I had a different girl do my hair & I fell in love. I was getting a full set of highlights & she suggested bayalage. It was suggested to me the first time and I turned it down but after talking it over we decided to do a half set. AMAZING! Truly! My hair grows out so much nicer now and it doesn't look like I desperately need to go to the salon to get a touch up the second my roots start showing. The downside is for a half set and a cut it is VERY expensive compared to foils. We're talking upwards of 300 bucks. I know to some people that isn't a lot, but compared to foils, it was pretty shocking for me lol especially since it was just a half! Regardless of the price I will always come back here! I even have my next appointment this Monday! read more

I've had some bad experiences that left me very distrustful of letting people cut my hair, so when I found Kristen at Hair Metal and she eventually moved to Exhibit, I hunted her down and moved right along with her! The salon is small and quiet which adds to the relaxing experience, and Kristen is always very patient and creative when it comes to my hair. I'm one of those annoying clients that come in and don't know what they want to do with their hair, and she'll take a long look, ask me what I'm comfortable with chopping off, and get right to it! She uses a razor on mine, which gives me the edge that I prefer, and she has a good sense of people's personalities and style. I've never been dissatisfied with one of her cuts. She's great to chat with, really cool and laid back, and will talk to me about styling and products without the condescending attitude that some professionals will take. Like most people, I can only afford to go to the salon so often (and wish I could go more!), but her cuts last me for several months. The other stylists are friendly & chatty but attentive to what they're doing, which leads to the overall familial atmosphere that is so important to me when choosing a salon. Once upon a time in a Yelp world far far away.... I hunted the interwebs feverishly for a new hair dresser. I was a baby New Yorker and my hair was in desperate need of some tender loving care. As with most females, I have a mild (huge) love affair with my hair. However, I was in unchartered territory - a new city and nobody I trusted to make me pretty! Yikes! There was a commonality in every review and her name was Alice! Each review raved about this girl Alice - who some described as a "hair god"! Some even recounted tears of joy after their experience with her! I was sold! I wanted to cry tears of joy from a hair god named Alice! Fast forward nearly three years, and here I am! Writing about the girl I found on Yelp - and who I might add - is easily the best stylist I have ever had! So when Alice broke the news to me that she was opening her very own salon, I was beyond ecstatic! Having had followed her all over for the last few years - it's pretty damn exciting to see her dream come true! This isn't just a story about how lucky I am to have found someone so awesome - but rather, about your chance to find that person too! Alice is unlike any I have ever met. She has a vision and understanding of what will truly be the best for you! She's also cautious and reassuring. Her ultimate goal is for you to walk away not only looking amazing but feeling unstoppable! It doesn't matter if that means just a trim or a whole new you - just as long as you're happy! I recently had the pleasure of being a client at the new and awesome Exhibit... and let's just say - I am impressed! What a great space!
