Oh exhibit. I love you already. I starting going to Ashlee when she was at hair metal, I followed her to roots radicals, I followed her to Exhibit. Heck, I'd probably follow her if she was cutting and coloring hair in an alleyway in Brooklyn and the chair was an upside down garbage can. Jokes aside, I also coerced my boyfriend to get his hair cut by Ashlee, and today we both got hair cuts. We all know that Ashlee is da bomb, (do people say 'da bomb' anymore?!? Whatever.) but this new space is very cool, she told me it used to be a thrift store that was there for 30 years. It's a nice, chill, contemporary space. The ladies are still working out some the decor, but I know it's going to be really rad when it's finished. The prices! Oh, the glorious prices! Probably the best I've encountered in all of the salons in Brooklyn that I've gone to. This pleases me. So come here, I'm sure you will love it too. read more

Once upon a time in a Yelp world far far away.... I hunted the interwebs feverishly for a new hair dresser. I was a baby New Yorker and my hair was in desperate need of some tender loving care. As with most females, I have a mild (huge) love affair with my hair. However, I was in unchartered territory - a new city and nobody I trusted to make me pretty! Yikes! I knew I couldn't just entrust my locks to anyone! Thus, I had to find that one person who would make my locks more bangin' than they had ever been. This is New York, dammit! If I couldn't find that person here... Then where could I find them?! After hours of reading Yelp review after Yelp review - attempting to find a place that didn't look pretentious or outrageously overpriced - I found one. There was a commonality in every review and her name was Alice! Each review raved about this girl Alice - who some described as a "hair god"! Some even recounted tears of joy after their experience with her! I was sold! I wanted to cry tears of joy from a hair god named Alice! Fast forward nearly three years, and here I am! Writing about the girl I found on Yelp - and who I might add - is easily the best stylist I have ever had! So when Alice broke the news to me that she was opening her very own salon, I was beyond ecstatic! Having had followed her all over for the last few years - it's pretty damn exciting to see her dream come true! This isn't just a story about how lucky I am to have found someone so awesome - but rather, about your chance to find that person too! Alice is unlike any I have ever met. She has a vision and understanding of what will truly be the best for you! She's also cautious and reassuring. Her ultimate goal is for you to walk away not only looking amazing but feeling unstoppable! It doesn't matter if that means just a trim or a whole new you - just as long as you're happy! I wanted to write a yelp review because I love my hair and had a great experience. I had Julie, which was fate, because I loved her personality and how she instinctively knew how to handle what I needed done with my hair. I have curly hair, and anyone with curly hair knows it is hit or miss, even with a good hair stylist-- some people are just better than others at it. I think Julie has a really artistic and intuitive approach, and after seeing a few photos of the shape I wanted to lean towards most, she gave me a great cut. I was told I was beautiful 4 times after leaving that salon today (NOT before, not even once haha) Cool salon with a great vibe, I'm glad I found my new place and stylist :) read more

So I've gone out and created an account just to write this review. I moved from California 8 years ago and have been through sooooo many salons, through recommendations, my own research and just random walk-bys and have yet to find a salon that I can consistently go back to ... BUT this is finally it. I had my hair cut with Tori... I have long straight Asian hair... I had ombre done so my hair was a little fried... before that I just had different color, nothing that drastic.... and my last hair cut was a disaster. My hair was down to my waist and I asked to take some length off (3-4 inches) and also for that V shaped layer thing... She gave me a very valid and gentle suggestion as to what she can do instead and believes will work for my hair better.... and if I don't like it, she can move towards the V if i prefer....I like that she did this as most stylist will not say anything and just do it, and sometimes do it incorrectly, even though they themselves do not believe it will look good. And she was right, she styled it with the perfect contouring without having the blunt V i asked for and it looks great. Throughout the haircut, she kept me engaged and included in what she was doing, which was a first for me, and was not rushing or hacking away... easy, gentle cuts but efficient.. I was in the chair for a little over an hour which for me was perfect, any less I'd feel rushed and any longer I will feel like I've sat there all day... Oh and she gave me a deep leave in conditioner which most places would not do... at least without charging you extra, and my hair came out soft, flowy and bouncy and just perfect. The cut came out beautiful and not over the top trying too hard to be trendy. The blowout was beautiful as well. Overall the cut and styling worked perfect for my frame and what I had asked for. I think Tori saw the big picture with my hair... its overall potential, how it can look if I styled it a certain way, how I treat it and just a long lasting cut. For sure I will be going back to her and even though Brooklyn is somewhat out of the way for me... I'm definitely invested in this place. read more

2 stars for the the friendly staff. Everyone is very friendly- gives off a great local vibe. Now... The experience with my hair is a whole other issue. The stylist didn't listen to most of what i told her about my hair. I explained the problems I've had in the past and told her exactly what I wanted- a bob (shorter in the back with an angled longer front). Well, that didn't happen. I got the opposite... Literally everything I told her I didn't want is what she gave me - longer hair in the front: it's shorter in the front and now to my chin when I requested well below that. -No chunky layers: I've got them now. - I told her that I don't use products or blow dry and that I like to wash and go: now I have to invest in products just so that my hair doesn't look like I'm Rachel from friends. At the end while she was blow drying my hair, she said "I didn't realize how thick your hair is! It's taking so long to dry" .... Really? You've already cut my hair... And now the drying process is putting the thickness of it into perspective!? Jesus Christ. When I left, I thought- well, it'll grow out..... How depressing. I've found that the cut itself, is not beyond managing- just waaaay more than I bargained for and very far from what I like. I've been told multiple times that it's "cute". I'm a 30 year old female business owner .... I no longer want to be cute. I certainly wouldn't say my hair looks bad- I will say that it's NOT my style and dates me (which is not what most woman are going for). I chose this place because it was so highly rated on yelp.. When really those ratings are just a reflection of the way most things work over in greenwilliamswick. Everyone talking about how great their friends are when really, they're all mediocre and unimpressive. read more

I have been following Alice through a couple of salons for a few years now. There is nobody else who has ever cut my hair so well for so long, so it was a no brainer that I was going to come to this salon. I will probably fly back from any destination I ever move to just to get Alice to cut my hair. I swear, it looks amazing every time and then just when I think it is time to get it cut again, my hair goes through this magical phase where it looks like it was JUST cut. And I am talking about like a month to a month and a half after I had it cut. I spend about one glorious week mid grow-out with people saying "your hair looks great, did you just get it cut." This means that I get my hair cut way less frequently than Exhibit probably wishes, but that's their own fault for offering FREE BANG TRIMS. insert emoji heart here--- because yelp wont let me. read more

This is the third salon I have followed Ashlee to, and as always, the results are great. I'm no dream client - I have lots of requests about how little to take off here, or how much to take off there, or can we please not shampoo it today, blah blah blah - and Ashlee is always a fountain of patience and skill. She is the only stylist I trust with my hair and I never leave her chair anything but happy. If you are a scissor-ninny like me, living in fear of a hairdresser who thinks "just a trim" means "cut it all off", I highly recommend her. I've had two haircuts from Julie. Run - don't walk to Exhibit to have her cut yours! She's amazingly talented, creative and has the gift not all stylists have, which is being intuitive when interpreting the mix of looks I wanted for my challenging all one-length, thick, long mane. The salon is very welcoming and relaxed. The staff is very professional yet friendly both in person and via phone. Luke called to confirm my appointment the day before and I was offered something to drink when I arrived. The location in Greenpoint is convenient by car; I easily found parking on a Sunday afternoon. Trips back to maintain my bangs are complimentary. (As someone who also works in a customer service-related field, it's nice to be on the receiving end of such quality expertise and courtesy.) All that being said what more incentive is needed? So thrilled with my hair and to have found a stylist as competent as Julie! 100% Recommended!!! read more

I love this new salon! All the girls that work there are great, but Alice has been my stylist for years now and I'm so happy to follow her to this great new space in Greenpoint. I typically need to change up my hair every 4 months, and I can always count on Alice to help me find both really cool cuts and flattering colors that go with my personality and style. Her knowledge of new styles and techniques is great for this, and she is a doll on top of it all. Best haircut and colour I've had in NYC! I got my hair done by Kristen last night and I love it! I am definitely making this my regular spot. I've never had someone spend so much time on my hair. Staff was all masked and stations were sanitized well. My stylist was super friendly and gave a great consultation. Let me first say, I have never ever cut my hair my hair short in my 34 years of living. After doing extensive research on hair stylist, I came across Alice and noticed how much her clients rave about how good she is. I must say, Alice has a lovely personality, which makes getting a haircut a true pleasure. I HAD dread locs which I was growing for close to 2 years, I decided they were not for me but in order to get rid of them I would have to cut my hair short. I called Exhibit, and scheduled an appointment, Alice was able to fit me in the same day I called. Needless to say I was anxious, nervous, and more nervous because I had never cut my hair above my shoulders. I walked into the salon, first impression- Nice atmosphere, the welcome desk is right by the entrance, which works out lovely, I was greeted as soon as I walked in the door, not only by my stylist but also by her co-worker and her client as well. Alice walked me through the whole process putting my anxiety at ease right away. All I can say is Alice did a phenomenal job with my hair, gave me tips on how I can style it in different ways, products I can use for my hair texture, and a recommendation for when to come back and get a free clean up. When I did speak to the receptionist, I asked if there was a chance to do a walk-in and she laughed at me condescendingly. She continued to act like I was stupid for even asking about other times in the coming days. Then she abruptly put me on hold again. I hate hate hate hate hate leaving negative reviews for anyone. I hate complaining, I hate calling people out, I hate anyone who doesn't get that hey, sometimes bad things happen. I've never left a Yelp review ever, and this is my first. I had an appointment for Exhibit tonight, for what would have been my fourth or five appointment in the last few years. I work weird hours and have a trip planned out of town, but they were able to find me an appointment with my second-choice stylist for tonight. I'm like six months overdue for a haircut and was really looking forward to chopping this mess off. About eight hours before the appointment, Beth texts and says the stylist is "running super early" and asks if I can come in two hours early. Well, no I can't, I say. Do you need to reschedule me for another time? Oh no no no, everything's fine, original appointment is just fine, Beth says. Fast forward to the afternoon, three hours before the appointment, Beth says yes, they do need to reschedule because the stylist is sick. I fully understand that people get sick and that shit happens, but it's how you handle curveballs that show how classy your business is. I'm pissed because I GAVE YOU AN OUT this morning, and you assured me everything would be fine. I got mad, pointed out that if accommodating an evening appointment was going to be a problem, then please just tell me that when I call in the first place. Only then do they offer me an appointment with Ashlee, one of the owners and the person I'd wanted to see in the first place. What do you do in that situation? Take them up on an appointment they're only offering to keep because you got mad? How much faith would you have in the cut you're going to get under those circumstances? There's zero chance it wouldn't be awkward as hell. And if Ashlee was willing to do a nice thing and stick around for the cut, then make that offer when you're first cancelling my appointment, don't reserve it for the person who gets mad -- offer it in the first place. "I'm sorry, your stylist was ill. We can offer you a rescheduled appointment that fits your availability on another day, or a slightly delayed appointment tonight with one of our owners tonight." I'm really sad, because I liked Exhibit, and I liked talking them up to friends in the neighborhood. There are so many ways this could have been handled better. read more

So I moved to NYC two years ago from the western side of the country. I had been going to the same stylist back home for years. I had INTENSE anxiety about finding one out here that could keep me within the range of red that I adored. My bf at the time was going to a place called hair metal. I had called and asked for someone who was good with color and made my appointment. The rest is history. Ashlee was able to take me from bright orange/red to a healthy natural brown, then back to many different shades of red. From pinup bangs, no bangs, & currently purple and dark brown. She makes all my hair dreams come true and always makes sure to never compromise the integrity of my hair. I followed her to roots radical and now to exhibit. I recently got the bright idea to do a pink ombre on my natural red hair, and was referred to Lynette by a friend. There aren't enough words to say what a great experience and outcome she gave me. Having never colored my hair before, and only getting a haircut about once a year, I was extremely nervous to do something out of my natural element. I've been seeing Jen for almost a year now- as someone who used to chop off my own bangs and bleach my hair over the kitchen sink, it is so amazing to have hair that looks good now. I hadn't had my whole head professionally dyed before going to her, and it was such an easy experience. Every time I come in, she seems genuinely excited to be working on my hair, and that's such a great feeling. I used to live across the street from the place, and have since moved twice. I don't live close to Exhibit anymore, but it's still the only place I get my hair done. All the women there (sorry if there are men, I haven't met them yet!) are super cool and easy to talk to. It's such a stress-free and positive environment. The salon itself is really cute- always has different art displayed, and old punk and rock music playing. After a few years of forking over an outrageous sum for what turned into a very generic hair(helmet)cut at Devachan, I found Megan. She is extremely professional, but is also a warm person who takes the time to listen and has *always* given me exactly what I ask for. I will always trust her to give me something that I love. But the patron saint of hair, Julie at Exhibit was so sweet, understanding and talented that I am so glad I broke my streak with an appointment with her yesterday. I mean, I told her I was concerned about cutting my hair short (it's naturally very wavy and very thick) because in the past I've gotten "triangle head" and not only did she know exactly what I meant but told me the steps she was going to take to avoid it. I explained that I was a little nervous and she brought me a glass of wine. She got me excited about my hair during the cut (an asymmetrical "lob," if you will). Love, love, love my haircut. Went from below shoulder length to very short undercut. Alice was great. Helped me, a 60+ young at heart customer, achieve an edgey, yet not age- inappropriate (as far as I am concerned), undercut style. Felt very comfortable in what I thought might be a salon that catered to very young, hipster types. The complementary wine was a welcome treat. I was particularly impressed by the fact that there as no attempt to hard sell products - just the opposite from high end salons in Manhattan I've been to in the past. I was, however impressed with the product they used and was surprised to be persuaded to purchase only a sample size to see how I liked it. Where even to begin with Anya?! I've wanted purple hair for as long as I can remember, but every.single.stylist was scared off by my super-dark, super-fine locks. I was told that the transformation would be impossible so many times, I believed it - until a friend with similarly dark hair was turned into a light metallic pink beauty by Anya. So I booked a consultation, and was elated when Anya told me she could absolutely give me the purple hair of my dreams. Beyond being knowledgeable, confident, and informative, she was completely transparent about how long the process would take and how much it would cost. During my appointment, she was collaborative, attentive, and communicative. She's also super fun to talk with, and is just a generally chill, sweet presence.
