A friend of m ine had been raving about this place and their pastries, but they are only opened during the week, as they are in an industrial area. While my husband was out he took the liberty to snag a few things for us to try and it was definitely worth the hype... He snagged three pastries for us: The almond croissant, the kouign amann and their savory goat cheese and fig croissant. They were all out of this world, ESPECIALLY the almond croissant. It was a tad different with the almond glaze on the top of the croissant, but it did not disappoint. First of all, the thing was HUGE, perfectly layered, buttery sweetness and delicious. The barista told my husband the kouign amann is their most popular one. I don't know exactly what it is, but again layered pastry, soft with some sweetness. A great simple morning pastry, without going to crazy and paird really nicely with my espresso. The goat cheese and fig danish was very good, but probably my least favorite. The fig flavor didn't totally resonate. Again, pastry was perfect and definitely worth getting, but out of the three we tried, this one I don't feel inclined to get again. All three came out to about 20 bucks, not cheap, but honestly worth it and most pastries are around this price point these days, and for the quality, money well spent. We didn't get any coffee this time around, but would love to check them out again and try some other things and their coffee offerings. The space is very small, so not a place to work or meet up, but grab some goods to go, absolutely. The pastries are delicious & the coffee can be inconsistent (acidic espresso or burned milk). I come often so the online ordering makes it convenient since the walk-in service can be slow, as someone prior mentioned, this is a one woman show. I've learned to arrive 5 minutes later than my order ready time & the barista is typically finishing up my order, or I am waiting a minute or two (I once waited 15 minutes past my order ready time). If there was a local shop more convenient than this one, I'd probably go there, but this place does have fantastic pastries. The barista seems to be constantly trying to catch up. She is clearly overworked with little to no room for mistakes and honestly it can bleed into her attitude. An additional person behind the machine could really help this shop grow. read more

Glaze was good and cinnamon flavor good. The fruit danish had crispy edges and a nice custard in the center! Just OK: the caramel roll was really soft like a classic American cinnamon roll would be but not much flavor going on. The almond croissant was most surprising. For some reason there was this super sticky glaze all over it that made it difficult to hold and eat. The croissant was really soft rather than having some crispiness. I was surprised to find no almond filling which I typically see in almond croissants. The location of this spot serves local businesses well since its located in a business park. Oh my gosh yes! 10/10. This is a small place set amongst industrial buildings and warehouses, so it can be easy to miss. You should be able to get to it from southern, but check your map to get to the right location. They have really inventive drinks and pastries. I got an egg, cheese, and bacon sammie on English muffin and it was delightful. So much flavor, which can be hard to achieve in something as simple as a breakfast sandwich. I have been wanting to try this place because of the good reviews of their tasty pastries, but had problems getting over there during their limited business hours (not open on the weekends). I finally had some extra time on a Friday morning, so I made the trek there (it was a long way from Phoenix!). It is a very small shop located in an office park (hence why their hours are just during the week). The coffee menu consists of the coffee drinks that you would find at most coffee bars. I ordered a cappuccino, which was good. I also ordered two of their pastries to take home: an espresso croissant and a lemon meringue croissant. Both pastries were excellent. I came here twice while I was in town visiting. I got hot vanilla latte the first time and a caramel frappe the second time. The coffees were okay, nothing to write home about. One of my absolute favorite coffee shops! I used to live nearby and loved stopping in--especially on rainy mornings before going to work. Their pastries, breakfast sandwiches and lattes were such a comforting part of my weekday routine. Now that I've moved, I miss it all the time. I always make a point to stop by whenever I'm in the area because nothing else quite compares. We've been enjoying pastry items from Jonathan Robins Bakery at a coffeehouse near our home for a few years. When it went out of business, we were very sad that we could no longer go around the corner to get our favorite pastry items, so we poked around online and discovered that Jonathan runs his own place! It's a hike for us, but I decided today, as a Valentine's Day treat, to surprise my wife with a trip out to visit The Experiment at JRB, and boy, were we glad we did. Not only were the pastry items we ordered as amazing as we expected, but we were served by Jonathan Robins himself, as he was working the counter when we arrived. He was super amiable and chatted with us as though we were friends, and we thoroughly enjoyed the conversation. The Experiment at JRB is really just an add-on to Jonathan's commercial bakery, so it's located in a commercial business area. Don't let that or the small nature of this walk-up location fool you. You will love the wonders that await your taste buds! Jonathan said that he's planning to expand a bit so that he can add a little indoor seating in the future, so stay tuned for that. In the meantime, there are two good-sized high-top tables outside, and we sat at one of them to enjoy some of our items, as it was a beautiful sunny day in the 70s. My wife and I ordered several things to enjoy around lunchtime. I ordered a black forest ham and gruyere cheese croissant, a Kouign-Amann (at Jonathan's recommendation, laminated dough with salted butter and caramelized sugar), and a cold brew. Later, I also picked up a small loaf of the banana bread for the road. My wife ordered a flaky jalapeno pastry with cheese, a raspberry cheesecake (prepared by Jonathan's talented pastry chef), and a hot Signature Latte (espresso, bourbon syrup, and steamed milk). Later, she also picked up some additional items to take home: a heart-shaped chocolate ganache cake topped with a strawberry dipped in white chocolate, and a small loaf of pumpkin bread--the stuff of dreams that we used to eat all the time at the aforementioned coffeehouse. Oh, and we sampled two small, incredible, white chocolate macadamia nut red velvet cookies before we left. It would take too much space here to fully describe each item we ate. Literally everything we ordered was top notch and perfectly balanced in terms of richness, sweetness/savoryness, and size. Jonathan only uses the best ingredients, and you can taste it. The coffee drinks, from a Los Angeles roastery, are not an afterthought, as they were prepared perfectly and tasted delicious. What we love about Jonathan Robins is his commitment to high quality baked goods and unpretentious, friendly service. I've had this place on my radar for a while, but it's been difficult to get here because they aren't open on the weekends. It's a very tiny place with no indoor seating, but they have a large covered table out front. Their pastry selection is unmatched. I ordered a cinnamon roll that I was skeptical about because it looked like it might be dry due to the shiny outer layer. Boy, was I wrong! The roll was perfectly moist and full of cinnamon. The muffin was the same way. It looked crispy on the outside, but turned out to be moist and full of delicious berries. I would love to try their lunch offerings because if they are even close to the deliciousness of their pastries, they will be amazing. I had the espresso croissant, kouign amann, strawberry rhubarb croissant, and The Best Cookie. All incredible and not overly sweet. What a hidden gem! We got the caramelized pistachio and honey bourbon lattes. The pistachio latte had real pistachios on top drizzled with caramel... Absolutely incredible. They offer breakfast and lunch options. For lunch they offer mainly sandwiches from what I could tell. For pastries, mostly croissants, but they do offer other items like muffins, cookies, and cinnamon rolls. I had a chance to try their espresso croissant, chocolate ganache cake, breve coffee, and London fog tea. All of them were delicious. They had a variety of coffee and tea options including some seasonal items. The place itself it's very small. No seating inside and very limited seating outside. It's definitely more of a takeout spot. They are open 6-2 PM M-F and closed on the weekends. Their pastries are really high quality and so are the drinks. Service was fast and friendly. This place is truly a HIDDEN GEM! I'm visiting nearby and looked up coffee places and came across this spot. What lured me in was the pictures of their pastries and omg I'm glad I came. The lovely woman in the front was so nice and answered my questions about different coffee flavors. I like mine pretty sweet so I ordered the brown butter latte. They had a list of cool drinks and their pastries are IMMACCULATE. There were so many and freshly baked in house, the s'mores croissant was the best thing I've ever had. Wow! What a gem hiding away amongst some office complexes. It's off the main roads but easy to find with plenty of parking. They have a full coffee/tea menu but I think the real draw is the pastries. Nestled inconspicuously within an industrial business park in Tempe, you'll stumble upon a hidden gem, the Experiment Coffee and Pastry. From the outside, its location might surprise many, but once you step inside, you're immediately greeted by the aromatic allure of freshly brewed coffee and an immersive display of pastries. There is limited seating with two stools inside and a table outside. I wouldn't plan on staying here to eat but would rather grab and go. While I was here I got the caramel pistachio latte with almond milk and the everything bagel croissant. The latte was delicious with bits of roasted pistachio in the drink itself and the everything bagel croissant had cream cheese filling and was absolutely delicious. Please NOTE: It's in an industrial are and there was no sign on the outside, except on the front door. There's no seats inside but there are 2 tables a few chairs outsiders. They do say they'll be expanding. BUT don't let that stop you from coming here. Best croissants I've had since moving to AZ! Someone thought deeply about this and made it over and over before it reached this level of perfection. That person's work is a gift to the people of Tempe. Getting this kouign amann is on par with getting a cannoli in north Boston. It's now a staple in my life and should be a requirement for a visit to Tempe.
