I don't want the Russian mob to put a hit on me! That's what I was thinking as I slunk furtively into this place to get my hair cut the other day. You see, back in the day when I worked on 43rd St, I came here all the time because it was cheap, fast and quick*. Even with a line, the guys hustled and got you looking spiffy in no time. Since my job moved, I haven't been back much but found a local barber shop which I like near my home staffed by Russians. But last time I was in little Moscow, a new woman cut my hair and it was awful and I was scared to go back. So I made a trip back to my old barber shop and it was like I never left...they did it just the way I liked it and I was in and out in 14 minutes. Now I'm scared to say that I went back to my old barbers, because if my new barbers are reading this, they'll know I cheated on them and I don't want to get killed. I often walk into Expert Haircutting Barber and find a bunch of guys sitting on stools against the wall waiting, yet I get called over right away by one of the barbers. Why? Because they are each waiting for their "favorite" barber. I think that says a lot about this place. I've never seen it empty, and all the customers seem to have a great rapport with the barbers and it's small talk aplenty whenever people are there. I have one of the easiest cuts, just shave it down to the skin. You'd think this would be simple, but I've gone to shops where they screwed it up by leaving some hairs here and there sticking up or worse - patches. Never at this place. They take great care and never seem rushed, despite the lines of customers waiting. They take their time, do things right with finesse and for a good price to boot! Most barbers in the area charge anywhere from $15-25 for their services, but these guys start at $12! For this area that's a steal. While the shop has been around for decades, nothing looks worn down or trashed about it. The owners clearly care about the presentation their store makes so it always looks bright and organized, something I really appreciate. Expert Haircutting Barber gets my vote for a good place to get a quick haircut in the midtown east area. read more

This place is very hit or miss. I've been over 20 times for the past four years. Your satisfaction depends on which barber you get and whether they wanna listen to your preferences. They tend to cut however much they feel and then tell you it's better that way, even though it's not what you asked for, and end up disliking. Recently I've been going there just to get my sides and back cut, and I ask them not to touch the top at all because they seem to be clueless when it comes to style and wanna give everybody buzzcuts. You'll also leave with little hairs all over your face. Some of them make an effort to clean it off, but otherwise they just let you walk out with hair everywhere. I'm giving them 2 stars because I've had the occasional good haircut but otherwise I think it's time I stop going here. I only go because it's relatively cheap at $14, quick and close to work. But sorry, no more. If you're lucky enough or book ahead of time with the main guy up front, you'll have a better experience since he's the best barber there. He's always busy though. You'll notice he always has a customer, even as everyone else is sitting around and it's dead inside. read more

The barber named Alfredo was a pretty professional barber. He takes his time and doesn't rush your cut just to pick up the next customer waiting. 5 stars for him and a generous tip. The same cannot be said for the guy wearing a yamaka (there is only one) who was outwardly rude, and inattentive because he's already focused on cutting the next guys hair. No tip for him. I would avoid this last guy and try the 5 other barbers, unless you want a rushed and uneven cut. read more

This is the best barber in Manhattan! They have 8 guys cutting hair in a true old school fashion. You get a great, fast cut for only $12.00. I think in the 15 years I have gone here for haircuts I may have waited a total of 20 minutes for a chair to open. All the guys are great and the place is a classic. Perfect for a quick, clean, and classic haircut - I'm usually in and out within a half hour during lunchtime. They have 6+ barbers working at that time. What I said above also has a little negative: the barbers give you a great classic haircut and shave, but they can't/don't do any real styling. read more

What a horrible experience, had the old guy cutting my hair, he didn't want to use the scissor and kept insisting on using the machine. Didn't bother spraying hair with water even though I had gel in hair and his comb kept getting stuck. You get what you pay for, only go here if you have no other choice and need a quick cut because the quality of the cut is mediocre at best. read more

Worst haircut ever. I didn't get anything close to what I asked for, then when I started to tell the guy cutting my hair that it wasn't looking right he told me to wait and see. I asked "keep the length on top, but trim the sides to be the same length as my beard" and he just trimmed EVERYTHING. On top of this he kept getting hair in my eyes as he cut it, sprayed me in the face multiple times, and didn't brush any hair off, I had to brush it off. After a disastrous cut just two weeks ago at another barber shop, I tried this one based on a recommendation from a fellow Yelper. BIG improvement. This place is exactly what I have been looking for: male barbers, old world feel, and a classic, reasonably-priced cut that doesn't take too much time from your day. $14 is more than fair for the experience you will get here. $20 with tip still costs less than everywhere else I have been in Manhattan. Accidentally left my hat the night before at the Japanese ramen place next door. When I put the hat back on, I remembered that I had a little too much hair between my hat and my head. Saw a little sign and stairs up to this place, and checked the Yelps. No wait on a Saturday morning and got a great cut (mine is an easy "mowing" of my scalp, a 1 1/2 guard) and the classic straight-edged shave for $12 total. I get this treatment in a small, working-class neighborhood in Chicago. But in midtown Manhattan? Don't fuggedaboutit! read more

Surprised this place does not have more reviews. Recommended by a colleague. What I loved was that the place is packed but it is very quiet. I'm not a fan of chit chatting while my hair is being cut. 4/11/14 - WORST HAIRCUT EVER! I was in and out in 15 minutes - with what was undoubtedly the worst haircut I ever had. It may not be the same for all of the barbers in the shop, but that's like playing Russian roulette, no?? The cut was completely botched...to the point where I paid a barber near home to fix the damage minutes after I got home from the city. Issues: - the cut was completely uneven - the barber was basically just going through the motions carelessly - I asked for a low fade, but left with barely enough hair on my head for my local barber to perform the miracle fix WASTE OF MONEY!! Old school/no frills barber shop. There are minimum five guys cutting hair at any time. Some are better than others but so long as you make yourself clear on what you want you shouldn't have a problem. 14 dollars(without tip) is a great price for manhattan. If you work anywhere in the midtown/grand central area you can schedule a quick half hour window and be back in the office for your next meeting. If you are into stylish and trendy looks you might want to consider going elsewhere but for a straightforward haircut and cleanup in the back I highly recommend them. read more

Got a haircut today and the guy wearing the yamaka (this is in no way anti-semetic, just want to give people fair warning who to avoid based on my experience) butchered my hair. You know how a barber's supposed to bend your ear over when he cuts it so that the end of the hair matches up with the ear? Well know I have a noticeable gap between my ear and my hair that just is straight up my skin which of course I didn't notice until I got home and looked in a mirror (since you can only see the front during the haircut and then they show you the back via hand mirror). read more
