I waited to write this. It's been 3 weeks and I'm fighting not to take braids out so I can go to another stylist. I was excited. I'm growing my TWA out and have salt and pepper hair. I found this place via tick tok. I called the number provided. Lady I spoke with told me to text a pic of what I wanted and my hair length. Over the next couple of days, we stayed in contact. She ensured me that she would have my black and grey mixed. We confirmed a time but she wouldn't confirm price. She seemed really professional and responsible so I went in good faith. She asked me to be there at 8a. I told her I was coming from BK and would be running a bit late, 8:15a. I was a bit annoyed but things happened. Once I got in the chair she promptly started. Checking with me to see if the braid length and width was ok. She even allowed me to take a 30 minute break when I had to check in with my boss. Once she started to bread the front I did ask her for a more natural method. We had a bit of a row between "knotless" and "natural." She agreed to braid the front of my hair in the knotless style. It was an issue because I have a TWA. In the end, I left shortly before 6pm. Baby, did text to ensure I got home ok. I was happy to get out of chair, starving and tired. The end result I thought was ok. When I got home to inspect. My front parts were extremely crooked. She did not redo all braids in knotless style as she said she did. It bothers me so much, I won't wear my hair in a bun ponytail. The customer service didn't match the technique enough for me. There were some excellent braiders in the salon. But I will search elsewhere next time I get my hair braided. read more

I've been coming here for over 3 years and I cannot see myself going anywhere else for braids. The ladies are all very talented and friendly and listen to your requests and concerns. They work very quickly and have braiding hair in a plethora of colors (including grey and purple) Salon is no frills but it's quite clean. I got waist length box braids by Cisse in under 5 hours! AVOID this business and Hono specifically! Express Hair Braiding is where professionalism and cleanliness comes to die. You may get your hair braided quickly/inexpensively, but trust me *you get what you pay for.* If I could rate Express Hair Braiding and Hono at zero stars, I would. First, the building is DIRTY. Upon entering the building, I was assailed with an overpowering stench of urine. Since several businesses share the bathroom apparently no one takes responsibility to clean it. It reeked and there was dirty, standing water on the floor. You even have to bring your own toilet paper. I am not kidding. Express Hair Braiding is on the 2nd floor and it's dirty as well. It's one room, crowded from the walls to the center of the floor with dilapidated chairs, other hair braiders and their clients. I was alarmed at all the roaches crawling all around. Based on reviews posted here, I booked an appointment with Hono. I was her first appointment and she was late. Unfortunately, Hono takes the name Express Hair Braiding literally. She rushed through my hair, completing my braids very quickly. At first I was glad to be out of there so fast, but when I got home and put up my hair I saw that Hono had left a lot of my hair outside of the braids. She also did not braid down to the very end, so my braids were already unraveling. I took pictures and texted her about the problem. She said to come back the next day and she would go through them one by one to fix. However, when I came back it was a different story. Hono was sullen and uninterested in fixing the braids. Instead of going through my hair like she said, she asked me to point them out. As I found braids that needed fixing she got increasingly irritated. Before I'd finished showing her she announced, "This is the last one I'm fixing!" Then she walked out of the room and didn't come back. After a few stunned minutes, I left. I found Hono had not only left the room she had departed the building! She was sitting outside the building with another braider, and she resolutely ignored me as I left. So I wasted two trips/appointments only to end up with sub-par braids. I will never return and I urge everyone to save themselves the time, money and trouble. read more

Come here for good protective styles and great service. I called a few days ahead to schedule an appointment with Baby. I would be traveling later that day and needed to make sure that I wouldn't spend hours waiting and waiting to get my hair done. After chatting with Baby about the time I needed to be done, she agreed to make me her first customer of the day and even come in earlier than usual to ensure I was out on time. The morning of, she sent a quick text to make sure i was up/not wasting her time or sleep then showed up right on time to work on my hair. Off to a great start! I'm a 4a/b natural who typically wears twists and twistouts but needed a break from the manipulation. I've gotten Marley twists many times before (even doing them myself on a couple occasions) so I knew to prep my hair before getting to the salon. Baby seemed to appreciate the stretching and detangling and commented that the Bantu knots I had in reminded her of home. Baby and I discussed my desired style, length of braids and pricing (you should have an idea of how much your style runs and be prepared to pay in cash) then she got to work, getting through my head in about 5 hours all by herself. She listened to my specifications well, left out the edges I wanted out and did not braid too tightly as I asked. Absolutely the worst hair experience of my life. After going through it I hated my hair. Two little girls crying on two separate occasions. I can understand because it was excruciating, and despite telling her to do it looser several times she still kept doing it the same way. Complete waste of money on the hair, she was just horrible couldn't produce the photo I gave her. Baby which is her name, is very shady. She refused to say the exact price of the hair which is a very shady thing to do. Save yourself the trouble don't ever go there. If you have anxiety and don't want to get hypertension and high blood pressure don't even bother doing your hair here. It was like a screaming match for the entire 5 hours, just "chatting" shouting across the room to each other with no regard for costumers. It was unkept, filthy salon, if you can even call it that. On a Monday night, I called Baby to make an appt with her for box braids. We agreed on 10:30 AM on Tuesday. She was late because of a train delay. I came in with a frappe & bagel because I knew I wouldn't eat for awhile. When she saw me take out my food she said, "Don't worry, eat." She then went & sat down to have her breakfast. Clearly, she wanted to eat & I'm fine with that. I don't need my braider passing out. However, she should have had her breakfast before she got there. We agreed on 10:30 AM. I understood the train delay, but she was pushing it wanting to sit down for 15 mins to eat her breakfast. She should have began working on my hair as soon as she walked into the shop & settled in. Baby started braiding at 11:18 AM. 30+ mins after the time we had scheduled to start. I was out of her chair at 6:06 PM. 7 HOURS! I should have been out of her chair earlier but I'll tell you why I wasn't. 1. Vendors - She stopped to haggle with a vendor selling fabric. This lasted about 40 mins. 2. Phone - It felt as though after every completed braid, she'd pick up her phone. 3. Random walks to the door - Listen, I get braiding is tiresome but you have a paying job to do. 4. Constant conversation with other braiders - As if the process of getting your hair braided isn't painful enough, I had Baby & 10 other braiders killing my ears with their boisterous conversations. You'd think something as tedious as braiding hair would motivate you to focus & finish but nope! These ladies can talk. 6. Blatant disregard - Midway through braiding, she whispers in my ear that another woman would be coming in to get her natural, short hair braided. She said she had made her appt last week (lies, fairytales & fallacies) & if I'd mind if she paused my hair to do hers. If this client did in fact make her appt last week, why wasn't this communicated when I called to make my appt? I was annoyed but told her it was fine. In hindsight, I shouldn't have. 7. Help - I'm not sure why Baby didn't enlist another braider to help her get my braids done. She pulled someone towards the end when I had about 8 braids left. There were many braiders who were busy doing nothing. If she had pulled someone earlier, I wouldn't have spent an entire work day here. If you're a clean freak like myself, you will leave here disgusted. 1. They wash their food plates in the sink they use to wash hair. I didn't wash my hair here just something I observed. 2. As opposed to taking a food break and sitting outside or in some corner of the shop, the braiders eat smack dab in the middle of the shop on chairs where waiting clients sit. They let food & sauce fall on the seats so check the chairs out before placing your belongings down. 3. The floor is dirty. It looks like it hasn't been mopped in years. Hair, bottles, wrappers! Someone sweeps every now & again but it makes no difference. 4. One of the braiders was eating food & let her pineapple juice spill on the floor. She did not bother to pick the juice up until AFTER she finished eating. When she did pick it up, it was as if she had let water spill. We all know sodas & juices get sticky if not cleaned properly. 5. I saw one of the braiders casually spit a fruit pit at a plastic bag thrown on the floor. Because throwing it in the garbage wasn't feasible, I suppose? 6. There are tiny flies around. I saw some of them in the hair they use. A fly could very easily decide it wants to chill in some synthetic hair & a client could leave with one of them in a braid. I was pretty annoyed towards the end & asked Baby to speed it up and focus on my hair. I had been there long enough & could no longer exercise patience. She was apologetic but chalked it up to her being "sick". Not too sick to haggle with vendors but I digress. I got my hair braided on a Tuesday. I wrote this review on a Wednesday night with the braids in the trash. I hated the look, it didn't look like what I asked for. I couldn't stand the weight and tightness of the braids either. It was unbearable. Money down the drain but I feel 40 lbs lighter & truly did my hair a favor. Personally, I can't see this being a "protective" style for me. Not the way these things tug at your scalp. When it was time to pay, it was a huge production. She asked me to step outside like we were making some illegal business transaction. She asked me how much $ I had. I hate when people do this. JUST GIVE ME A PRICE. I gave her a price I FELT was fair, considering ALL OF THE ABOVE and of course there was opposition. So WHY ASK ME HOW MUCH I WAS WILLING TO PAY? I was ready to pay her the price posted on their price list + tip but my experience was abysmal. I gave her another price & she agreed. I'll say this, I think Baby is a sweet lady. Her "sweetness" comes off a bit disingenuous though. It seems to me she acts "sweet" so she can get away with mess. She was soo warm and extremely professional.. i watched the other braiders in there and they seemed super cold toward their clients... my braids are so bomb.. she did exactly what i asked.. i cant wait to get back in that chair for a redo, she definitely has me as a client foe awhile The atmosphere is atrocious so the 5 stars is STRICTLY for hono.. This review is for HONO, and only Hono. I can't speak for any of the other braiders. I've been lurking Yelp trying to do my research for who I wanted to do my braids. I came across Hono's number from another reviewer who had braids in the style I wanted. The other reviewer had her reviewed under "unity hair braiding" salon, but she's actually a part of "Express Braiding". (It's confusing because there's a hallway with about 3-4 different braiding 'salons'. Anywho, I texted Hono on a Tuesday and asked if she could do my hair that Saturday morning at 9am, she texted me back shortly after saying yes. It was my first time there, there's no outside sign indicating the salon so I was a little confused. The block is also riddled with women strolling up and down asking if I wanted my hair done. I called Hono and she came to greet me. Inside, the place is very congested and not the cleanest environment. I didn't think it was too unbearable though. It's packed with women braiding hair, loud talking etc. I just put my headphones on and zoned out. Hono gave me exactly what I asked for. We discussed the price in the hallway lol. It seems they're very negotiable. She asked how much I had/wanted to spend. I offered 125 and she was good with that. I'm sure she would have done it for less, but I wanted them to be full and not spaced out so I didn't want to low ball her. Overall, we got started at 9:30, I was done by 2:00. Hair was included in the price. She was very very nice, and took no breaks! She was the only one in my head as well. I'm very satisfied and would 100% recommend her, will return again. I give this 2 stars because the box braids weren't bad. They were clean, all collectively the same size which I appreciate. However I noted that I wanted them full and it's nowhere near as full as I wanted. Baby did my box braids. Now let me say, I've been getting box braids since I was was a kid. I've gotten them done on both coasts of the country and even in Africa a few times. And my box braids done by baby yesterday was literally the most painful, excruciating experience I've ever had. I asked her multiple times to loosen up on the tension. But nothing. It's like it went in one ear and out the other. Certain moments I felt like just calling it quits and walking out the door with a half head of braided hair. But of course I'm an adult, so I pushed through. Again, I'm not entirely happy with the end result but the braids are clean, so I'll keep them in for a few weeks. Another issue is that baby doesn't tell you what to pay, but instead asks you what you have-- which in after thought is kinda of shady. Because it gives her an opportunity to overcharge you if you offer too much. She'll still take it and say, 'for you, of course!' But best be sure if you give a price under what she wants she will ask for more. This is my second try with Baby and I honestly don't think I'll be back. The results weren't the best and she dang near ripped my edges out. But again the braids were clean. So a point for that. But the overall experience was quite miserable. read more

I have been going there for the past 4 years. To Cisse precisely. I've done it all box braids, Senegalese twists, cornrow up dos... And these are the reasons why I keep going back: * It's fast (hence the name). I can get medium sized box braids down my waist in about 5hours * decent prices (and negotiable!) * they include the hair * no appointment needed. Although it's best you schedule one if you don't want to wait hours, or if there is a braider you absolutely want * it's near my house The things they could improve on: -The look of the place -The cleanliness/ tidiness -It's gets crowded -The constant talking/ shouting I know that's a lot but they do a damn good job! Baby was the stylist that did my hair and she was so amazing, sweet and PATIENT! I expressed my concerns to her about not wanting her to braid my hair too tightly. So every time it felt tight I told her and she adjusted it, I have a very tender head so you can only imagine how many times I had to ask . She didn't mind at all and happily obliged, and after a little time I didn't have to tell her to to adjust the tightness anymore she figured out what I could handle and delivered. MAKE SURE that you confirm that It's Baby, because several people tried to say that they were here and they were not!!! I'm so glad that I made sure, I stayed on phone with her until I was in the room. Big room with different women braiding customer hair. It can get loud as well... but excellent customer service! If you handle the mess I'd say go for it. The WORST hair braiding experience I had .. I asked for large box braids and the braider started to do small braids when I told her about it she said if she does large ones it will be too heavy . This isn't my first time so I disagreed and asked her to do large braids . I had Hono do small box twist down to my butt... it took about 5 hours and she worked solo. I gotta warn you if it's your first time. This place is on the 2nd floor but there are a bunch of greedy vultures in the front outside waiting to take you even if you have an appointment with someone. They told me they knew who Hono was and took me to another braiding place. After I told them I had appointment and it wouldn't be right, the lady said she would give me a good price for it... I like ambition but this was downright desperate and tacky! Hono was sweet, fast and she respects your wishes. This review is for BABY, specifically. I have nothing but good things to say about her. She greeted me with a smile and was very kind. Once I walked in, she stopped braiding to find me a comfortable seat. When I was in the braiding chair, she made sure I was comfortable and even asked me to let her know if she was braiding too tight. She started braiding at around 3:40 and we were done by 8:00 which isn't long considering the fact that she did them herself start to finish. I loved my results!! Installation took approx 5hrs but worth every minute. Results are PHENOMENAL! So pleased with Baby and her work I had my sister come and get her hair done by Baby's niece who also did a wonderful job. I'm referring everyone I know to Baby. I'm in the process of wanting to go natural and decided on wearing braids. I went to Baby who was extremely nice to me. This was my first visit and second time with braids. It was an all day process since she fit me in last minute and had another head to finish. I love my hair which are small box braids and would definitely go back to her. This place is ok. You have some braiders who are slow and some who are very fast. My braider was very nice and very slow. It was about 15 braiders and all were busy. Everyone had on masks including clients, but no social distancing bc the place was so small. Bathrooms are out in the hallways, and were very nasty. Bring tissue and hand sanitizer with you!!! Take Theresa G's advice and get in contact with HONO. She is the jewel of this is place! I got in contact with HONO this past Friday afternoon. I arranged for a 9 am Saturday morning appointment with her which she confirmed quickly that day, and she reiterated Saturday morning as I was on the subway on-the-way there. I arrived outside the shop at 8:37 am Hono arrived five minutes later. So even before the installation of the braids I get five star customer service. I got a shoulder-length box braids installed and she did an excellent job at a great rate. I showed her an old picture of a previous install I had done elsewhere and asked for it to be shorter, and she went to work. Hono is a really sweet lady with great costumer service skills. I'm introverted and she asked if I was ok several times, if I wanted to go to the bathroom, if the air coming fron the window from our corner bothered me. (I was perfectly fine, just not a big talker when I first meet people; I did appreciate her concern greatly. Plus, the spring breeze blowing on my head while she braided was a plus.) She didn't talk at all on her phone or dawdle as I saw many other braiders doing. She did the work by herself and it took 4 1/2 hours and I'm extremely satisfied. She's an old school braider; she burns the braids with a lighter to get rid of fly-aways which a lot of people don't like but I don't mind. I'm sure if you request it, she won't do it; but fair warning. The ambiance of the place is typical of most braid spots in Harlem: a glorified, cluttered living room with a dozen women simultaneously braiding a dozen heads. The braiders are talkative and conversing in their native tongue(s) while the patrons zone out on their phones or talking to friends. I took everyone else's advice and didn't use the bathroom but saw other women who did coming back to the room looking, to a woman, traumatized. Five stars for HONO, three for the ambiance. I got my box braids done by Baby and they were absolutely amazing! She finished my bra strap length braids in 5 hours (which is pretty quick) & they lasted such a long time! I am coming here forever. I called Baby, but I was an hour late so her niece did my hair. She. Was. Phenomenal!!!! She (and everyone, really) was so kind, listened to what I was saying, made sure it wasn't too tight, didn't get hair from one braid stuck in another (which is a HUGE pet peeve of mine), and really just did a beautiful, beautiful job. There was a bit of a misunderstanding about the thickness I wanted, but she went back and redid a large portion anyway, and I was so, so grateful. I was really very pleased. I live all the way at Coney Island, and I can tell you I'm never getting my hair braided in Brooklyn again. These are ladies that know what they're doing. I've been looking for a new hair braider for some time now. After reading the reviews and the viewing the pictures, I decided to give Baby a try. I have to say I am very pleased. From the excellent customer service to the results of my hair. Baby was very warm and pleasant and she made sure I was comfortable. I told her what I wanted done to my hair and it was done exactly how I expected it. The braids were neat and although I had another braider in my hair, it didn't look any less neat which is a big thing for me. They took their time and I was done in about 5-6 hours with a decent length. I would also like to say that the prices are reasonable and she is willing to negotiate prices which is definitely a plus.
