Don't trust this shop or the owner. She tried to scam me. She will tell you one price then when you get there she'll go up. I heard her it was cause she had no girls they was no call no show so when said she will have to charge me more. She his is after washing and starting my hair. She's is over priced and braids slow. She knew I was traveling 7hr and showed her a photo. Never trust someone that says trust me. Also while trying to braid my hair the lady dropped the comb on the dirty floor and was about to put it back in my hair. Until I said something. She rinsed it off but the owner said to me that it is not that big of a deal. I said they have no formal training on how use only sanitary products on your hair. And they will stair u down make u feel awkward. Mi Mi ask me to go some Where else after starting and agreeing on the price! I went to the rest room and she kept Nocking on the door. Shop was dirty and un organized and freezing cold everyone was piled up on each other. I am so glad I had a plan B. I really love how the style looks. However be prepared to be there all day whether you show up early in the morning or the afternoon. They don't take appointments. I was literally there from the afternoon until after close time. Someone else who got there early morning was there until after close time. Someone will do all the parts and start the braid and someone else will finish off the the entire braid style. The knotless braids is 200$ & 250$ with the added curly hair. They provide the hair the hair gel everything but if you want to add the curly coils to the braids you have to only buy that on your own. If you want a thicker braid style it's 180$ if you bring your own hair and $200 if you use their hair. read more

Over priced. That's the topic of discussion. The owner is sweet but that's besides the point ... the prices are not displayed in the shop and they don't like to give definite prices. I asked for the price prior to the style being done, and I was given run around answers. They prefer you to get your hair done and then bargain a high price out of you. It's completely ridiculous. They are so money hungry it's sickening. I got straight backs today and was charged $250. The girl next to me did knotless and was Charged $270 today. Months prior I did knotless and was charged $200. As far as how the style looks .. it's like a luck of a draw. You'd better hope that your hair comes out the way you want it basically. Good work but they're exceptionally SLOW!!! I get my hair braided often & I have never been to a place this slow, and it's all of them it seems. My first install on waist length medium knotless took 11 hours....usually 5-6hrs at other places. I came back just to touch up my edges, it was 22 braids I needed to touch up and it took almost 4hrs...good work but I won't be back, I just don't have the time. read more

My daughter when to the Diva Hair Braiding salon and had a wonderful experience. The braided was at the shop when we arrived at 7:30 am.

First and foremost my hair does look pretty great. If that's all that matters to you then this can totally be the place for you. However the facilities were super disgusting. Literally loads of roaches and a huge rat upon entering the building. The chair I sat in was ripped up and nasty. Worst of all I was the second person there literally at 8am and they Started like 7 people's hair before mine. Not cool but It was super packed. I spent a total of 8 hours here and majority of that time was waiting. & they won't discuss the price with you inside the shop; they pull you out into the hallway which is super scetchy to me but eh. I wouldn't recommend it to people based on how gross It was but to each their own. read more

This salon is located in a building where there are many other African hair braiding salons. The women at the other salons will try to coerce you to get your hair braided with them. Therefore, to be safe, I called Mimi when I got there so that she can direct me to where she is located. The room the salon is located is crowded and has LOTS of braiders. The bathroom is filthy and everyone on the floor shares it. You have to borrow toilet tissue from the salon because people steal. I was expecting to see Mimi but I had a to wait a while and I ended up seeing Marian, one of her relatives. The style looked great but the hair was so tight that I was getting bumps and my hair was pulling out from the root. I ended up taking out the braids less than a week later because of the pain. Regardless of all of this, Mimi has a great attitude and makes you feel welcome in her salon. read more

Went in for one style and got another. If your going to braid with track hair... you'd cut the hair off the track and braid. If you want to crochet with braiding hair, you have to make your own loop. Agreed on a price when I booked the appointment and on arrival the price was increased by $80. Nobody wears masks. No social distancing in effect at all. Woman braiding my hair kept coughing over me. Had to repeatedly ask her to put her mask on. Very unsanitary conditions. At one point one of the other women were spitting and washing her feet in a common area sink. It seemed to be more of a hangout spot than a braiding salon. 1 week later most of my braids have fallen out. Will NEVER return. Save your money and take your business elsewhere. read more

First time here and I'm pleased with my hair. I called for "Mimi" the day before because I wanted her to do my hair based on the work displayed on her instagram. We started on time. She stopped a few times to help other braiders and customers but it wasn't an issue for me. My box braids are medium sized and about waist length..very neat and I'm not in pain. And at my request, she gave me complementary gold string on two braids. Pricing wasn't discussed beforehand and the price we went with was about $15 over my budget and what I thought I should've been charged, but I'm not complaining over $15 especially since the work was good. My first visit was ok. Despite the hair tech yelling (literally yelling) and arguing on the phone the entire 5-6 hours she did my hair, my hair looked great. Against my better judgment, two months later, I visited, hoping my hair would look as good as before. A different technician is selected to style me. My hair was terrible. The tech was even ruder than the first, and I witnessed the sister of the owner disrespect a woman who was with their young child. I visited this shop on my birthday and this is by far the nicest hair braiding place I've been to in my many, many MANY years of getting my hair braided; and I'm not just saying that because the staff sang happy birthday to me (lol). The prices are expensive but well worth it. The reason I say it's well worth it is because 1.you can book a hair braiding appt in advance which is awesome because you know what time your braider will start and finish your hair allowing you to plan your day accordingly. 2. The braider who did my hair, who was also the shops owner, braided fast, neat and not tight...ALSO she braided my hair exactly how I wanted and made it look better than I expected. It's only been day one and I've already received a ton of compliments. Although the shop is a lil run down it wasn't nasty dirty, I didnt feel uncomfortable or felt like I was gonna see a bug or rodent like in other shops I've been to. Knotless braids are very expensive (expect to pay $225+) but the work is great! I am very particular with how my braids look but I have no real complaints. Mimi is very sweet so that's a plus. When I got my hair done here, they did an excellent job! The only thing that was slightly bad was that I had to wait a long time but it was fine because it was a Saturday so it was a busy day. My visit was okay. I got Senegalese twists and they came out so really beautiful. I will post pics later. Mimi is a very nice woman and I'm happy that I found her via Instagram. The only thing about this place is that it just needs to be clean. The building is conveniently located in Harlem near the 2 or 3 train. There are several other braiding salons on the same floor as Diva's Hair Braiding. I do love how my twists came out. I've gotten my hair done by Mimi at least 5 times and she is a great hairstylist however recently her prices have gone up like crazy. I even brought her customers because some of my friends go there as well but I refuse to pay 150$ for a hairstyle that everyone else charges 90$ for. read more

Update 3/28/17 So a week later and one of my braids actually came loose and fell off my head while in class. How did this happen ? I realize the short hairs in the back they wrapped the hair extension around a section of hair NOT braid it into the actual extension. Suffice to say they can't braid super short hair properly into the box braid style. I'm afraid others may come loose so I may just take the breids of completely....waste of my money for sure. Found from IG search. First time here /going to an African salon period. Came at about 10:30 and left after 3:30. My hair is cut short , since I chopped off most my hair & just wanted a protective style. I was under the impression Mimi the shop owner wouldn Braid my hair since I had convos with her over the phone day prior & also when I got to the shop. But whatever. The lady who did my braids work was cool. I noticed you Have to be very specific on how you want your braids (if not too tight, leave the perimeter hairs out). I am extremely specific and asked to see how the first few braids were looking before I had her continue on. Some braids I had her do over again because my edges was braiding in as well. After leaving the shop I noticed my head was throbbing and braids felt more tighter than when I got it done. The next day after getting some sleep my head felt normal again! Perhaps she used more hair than I preferred. I have many many braids since she did small partings based upon my hair length. So my sides which are shaved don't show as much. Some braids the hair wasn't slicked down so it blends seamlessly with the extension hair (they seem to use only blue magic hair grease and not actually ecostyler gel or any pomade while braiding) so I have to go through it & adjust myself, same as I styled my baby hairs & perimeter hairs as well. She did use scissors then a lighter to "clean up" the braids but I told her to stop. I feel uncomfortable with such due to a risk of those flames shooting up towards your own hair & burning it. The shop could be a lot more cleaner though. That turned me off a lot. They have Xpressions hair sold there for $5 a pack or you can just bring your own. Will be monitoring my hair & scalp for the next few days to make sure no bumps arises caused of tension or soreness. Don't want any setbacks (bald spots, hair infections) but so far , OK. read more
