Today July 10, 2026, I made the mistake of buying a product from this Publix bakery that had a 'buy…read moreby date' of July 11. I had seen a beautiful sweet bread product on a tray in the center of the bakery that apparently had just been taken out of the oven. It was a cinnamon bread circle with what appeared to be some kind of syrup drizzled over it. I asked if I could get THAT one but was told there were some of that product behind me on a product table and that it had cream cheese on top of it. I thought that was an acceptable improvement over a plain cinnamon bread product. So I turned around and looked for it and found it. Another baker person, a younger lady, walked up to me and suggested that I put it in the oven at 350, maybe 450, and let it sit for about 5 minutes and it would be delicious. So I bought it. After heating it and cutting into it, I realized quickly the bread was beginning to stale... the outer edges JUST DRY.' As much as I love cinnamon bread, this was barely edible...just the center. The rest was no good. So it was a draw between them succeeding to sell a stale product and NOT selling me the product I actually wanted. Laziness? Publix sales goals? Either way, Im swearing off Publix bakery.

Donning my Studs Terkel cap, I seek out this adventure in commerce and will detour for it on occasion. This has a strong feel of neighborhood, evidenced in the conversations during my morning stop-ins. Whether it's the owner stopping in and pressing palms with customers and employees, or whether it's the congenial lady serving up some of the best gizzards in town, or whether it's the generally sunny disposition that takes one over as they exit this place - there's a certain elusive quality to this market that must be experienced. As you could guess, the farther out with fewer choices, the higher the prices climb. If you're "in town" this is the stop but... my next part is the reason for the poor rating. I ventured inside for lottery tickets. I play regularly and this was the slowest experience EVER! I had winning scratch-offs to be scanned which is my usual. The guy scanned each as expected but most places will scan one after another. This guy scanned one, waited for the print-out and stapled it to the ticket... then the next for minutes. I was rolling the winnings to the next set of tickets and he had to count them one at a time. My usual place of purchase (and most others) have realized if you count 5 or ten and continue to fold over, you really don't have to count. By the time he was finished the line was about 15 people long. Pumps are fine but inside was a fail. You decide.

The very word connotes a certain feel that can be summoned in practically any of these sorts of businesses. Whether it's in the hustle-bustle of NYC's Puerto Rican diaspora, or in an isolated bodega in Eastern Oregon that caters to a conglomerated latino/chicano population, or in this culturally Mexican "La Esperanza" (preferring to use "Tienda"), here on TLH's westernmost rim, the patron can still expect a microcosmic convenience store that has existed throughout history. Think of it as "The General Store" of our Western Expansion. Anyway - enough of my romanticizing the role of Bodegas/Tiendas. TLH does not have many bodegas/tiendas. Those I'm familiar with have set up shop largely outside and to the West of Capital Circle. There was one on South Monroe (adjacent to Nick's) that opened and swiftly closed months later - this was only a couple of years ago. Nonetheless, you still can find the occasional tienda such as this one. I don't have a drop of Spanish / Hispanic blood in me - BUT - here's my street cred: I grew up in the streets of Madrid all throughout elementary school and first year of middle school. So... - I've got that going for me. The Bodega/Tienda notion is fundamentally a Spanish one and I pretty much grew up in these. Those in Old (and New) Madrid are almost the same as these. They only vary by scale. La Esperanza - Tienda Mexicana serves up casera food throughout the week. There are particular offerings on particular days. If this interests you, you'll just have to acquaint yourself with the schedule. I don't know it well enough to recount it here. This store has a broad range of uniquely Mexican (and Central American) staples and products. there is a refrigerated section - but it's largely for non-perishables. I don't believe you'll find produce/groceries here. I would say this place is a novelty for most of us but a true oasis for many of our Mexican brethren among us - whether first generation, pre-first generation, or nth generation. I say this because you'll find easy ways of sending money back to "the old country" - and many conveniences that would attract Mexican ex-pats here. Additionally, you'll find a good number of Viva-Mexico apparel/knicknacks (e.g., soccer shirts, pinatas, etc.). I'm a sucker for Bodegas/Tiendas. You'll find me out at Silver Lake Meat Market (out on Highway 20) at least once a month because I can't find morcilla anywhere else. Puerto Rican morcilla isn't at all Morcilla de Burgos - but it certainly does well in a pinch. Anyway - come on and check this place out. Satisfy your explorer/adventurer's side. Heck - just come and enjoy it!
