My experience with Extra Space Storage was a stressful, unrelenting battle against an opportunistic force. I started off renting a space from them for $79/month. This was not my first time renting storage space and I knew that if you're not careful, the rate may unexpectedly rise. I asked the salesperson if there would be an increase in rent and when I might expect it. They said if I paid in advance, I could prolong my time without an rent increase, but I should expect one in about a year. "But don't worry," they said, "it won't be anything substantial. Maybe $10 a month more." In January 2021, the rent went from $79/month to $85/month. That's reasonable. But then in September of 2021, the rate jumped from $85/month to $159/month. I fought this tooth and nail, talking to the east coast head of Extra Space Storage. I asked him and anyone I could talk to how they could rationalize an 87% increase in rent. No one could. He offered to bring it down to $149/month. I had spent hours omn the phone, writing emails, writing letters and it helped me save $10/month. It occurred to me that about that time was when rent moratoriums were being halted across the country. Tenants who couldn't afford to pay back rent after the pandemic moratoriums were lifted, were now being evicted. That meant more money for storage companies. The unregulated storage companies became pandemic profiteers. Truly disgusting. By the time I was able to move out of the unit for good in July 2023, my formerly $79/month unit was now $220/month. This is immoral. This is corrupt. How do these people sleep at night? IF YOU'RE THINKING OF USING STORAGE, GO WITH A LOCALLY OWNED BUSINESS.

Once I locked my unit without closing the hasp without knowing it meaning that it was locked in an open position. Extra Space Storage noticed this on one of their walk through. They removed my lock and replaced it after securing the unit and notified me right away. I didn't realize they did these security checks but was glad they did! This is a climate controlled facility and we stored artwork as well as other things. We didn't suffer damage to any of our belongings in the years that they were stored there. I highly recommend this facility especially if you need to store things in a climate controlled environment.

When I returned to retrieve my items, I was horrified to find that mice had gotten into my unit and destroyed several valuable possessions, including a loveseat, a memory foam mattress topper, and multiple blankets. These were pretty expensive items. I also made sure when I moved my possessions in, that there was no food of any kind. I had paid for CubeSmart's damage protection insurance, assuming it would offer peace of mind in case of unforeseen issues like this. Instead, when I filed a claim, it was flat-out rejected. Despite clear evidence of rodent damage, they refused to take any responsibility or reimburse me. This has shown me that 1. CubeSmart does not protect their units from pests, and 2. The so-called "insurance" is essentially worthless. If you value your belongings and want actual protection, look elsewhere. I trusted CubeSmart and ended up with ruined items, no compensation, and a strong sense of regret. If you have a unit here, I strongly recommend moving to another company. Don't make my mistake!

But because I don't remember the paper contract, I refused to sign the digital contract. Even though we were paying every month on time for the last four years, they refused to give us one more month with the unit because we refused to sign the contract. Additionally, after returning the unit, my credit card was charged two months in a row, and I had to call the company to get a refund on my credit card. I would recommend the business because the delivery and pickup of the unit was simple. But everything else involved with renting this unit, I don't recommend.

A regular worker checked me out and I showed her the gaping hole in the ceiling as the reason why I'm moving. Everything is COVERED in ran feces and urine. You NEED breathing equipment, gloves, and sanitary equipment to even go into the units. This was across MULTIPLE units with MULTIPLE friends on SEPERATE occasions. None of these friends were related in any way either... This is a problem with the property. What's even worse is that this isn't the only Public Storage property that I've been to like this. In fact, it's the 2nd one... It makes me absolutely sick. The conditions are straight hazardous.
