In August of 2024, we went to look at a couple of dogs we liked for their online information. Neither seemed to be a good fit in person however. I remember one doggie photo on their website that actually was a bit scary looking, and it turned out that the dog with the 'tough guy' photo was in the kennel right next to one we were investigating. Funny thing was, in person, the tough guy was not even slightly scary, in fact he was as gentle as a lamb. Guess who came home with us? Yeah the one I'd judged incorrectly based on one photo; he is the treasure of our family now, such a good boy. Well, when the following August (2025) rolled around and the shelter had another adoption event, we decided to find a playmate for our boy dog. We looked at a few and settled on one female that obviously did not like being in doggie jail, seems she was a bit mouthy at times which made her unpopular with visiting folks. I saw potential though, and we took her home with us, and as I felt, the light nipping has diminished over time. Though a tad crazy, she is a fun addition to our home and she can actually fly at times in our large backyard. Both dogs have grown quite affectionate with one another over time, and both even get along with our kitty. Time for Esteban Rodriguez to step down as Director and perhaps let someone else more qualified be in charge. He definitely thought that this whole case would be blown over and that people wouldn't pay attention, but we did!! That's where he went wrong. There were several options proposed such as Cesar Millán taking him, West Coast Cane Corso sanctuary to take him in, several dog trainers stepping up to the plate, his death was unnecessary and VCAS jumped the gun quite literally on this case with Bruce. This will negatively affect the publicity of VCAS & in turn the animals eligible for adoption will plummet since no one will want to adopt from here anymore. Unless there is a 360 degree change in ALL employees with educating the public on safety, security, socialization, and proper training then this shelter will not succeed. I'm sorry to say it, but walking in here feels like walking into a cesspool of unhappy and miserable employees who take joy in power tripping over the control they have to potential families looking and willing to adopt dogs. An animal sanctuary has offered to take him but and they will not release him to his family either but instead they insist on taking this poor dog's life who has been rehabilitated. Conflicting review, shared with honesty and heart. I'll start with the difficult part, which is based on an incident from over 15 years ago. During a family move, my dog got out while staying with relatives and was taken to this shelter by animal control. Unfortunately, we hadn't updated our landline number, so we weren't notified right away. When we finally came looking for her, we were told she would be held for a certain time and that, due to her being a senior, we should come sooner rather than later. Sadly, when my mom and I arrived, she had already been put down. I was much younger and very emotional, and overcrowding was mentioned at the time. While this experience was heartbreaking, I don't hold it against them today. The shelter is now no-kill, and I truly believe in growth and change. I adopted my first dog from here as a puppy and adopted one of my current dogs eight years ago. Both experiences were positive--everyone was kind, helpful, and caring. Customer service has been great, and the staff deserves more recognition for the compassion they show. My wife and kids rescued some cats that have been lingering around our neighborhood for a while now with no collars. We decided to take them to Camarillo animal Shelter but were turned away because they looked "old". In what world does an ANIMAL SHELTER turn away strays because of age! They didn't even want to hold them incase they were lost. Unfortunately we don't have the space to keep them so now these strays have to live out in the cold because of their age ?!!! These are the cats that we were able to catch and unfortunately had to release again. I got one of my dogs from the Camarillo Animal Shelter a long time ago, although I still like to come back and see the doggies every once in a while and think about adding another dog to my family. Although I wish it was possible for every dog to have a home, I like that the dogs in the kennels are able to be outdoors or indoors, depending on what part of their kennel they prefer to stand in. There's an info sheet on the dogs, their breed, weight, sometimes info about their temperament, whether they were surrendered or "lost," and their availability date for adoption. When I first adopted my cutie pie dog, they also offered free obedience classes once a week for 6 weeks, which I swiftly took advantage of. They also adopt out kitties and I've seen some bunnies available for adoption as well, but typically the bunnies are not adopted out around Easter if I remember correctly. The only thing is that sometimes it's hard to track someone down if you're interested in a dog. This place has a lot of volunteers, but there's also a lot of customers who want to see and play with their future dog (or cat) outside of the kennel to see if they're a good fit for the family, so you just have to be patient. A lot of times, there are great deals for adopting your pet in order to try to clear the shelter. I adopted my sweetie pie dog for $25, when the prices were originally $125. He's worth every penny, even if we did have to get rid of the rugs in our house because he kept peeing on them. read more

I unfortunately had a pretty stressful visit to the Camarillo Animal Shelter when I came to visit the kitten I was interested in adopting. In order to visit a kitten to potentially adopt, you have to first sign in on the shelter's website at 9am and put a hold on the pet you would like to see. I was then given a hard and fast time to see the animal at the shelter, and if I didn't go then, someone else would get their choice to adopt that same animal. When I walked into the shelter it immediately reminded me of the DMV. I do not envy the employees behind the counter and I give mad props to the ones working that day. I waited in line for 45 minutes listening to a homeless man verbally assault the shelter employee and then get shown out by the police and to another man yelling to another employee about his pet licensing. I was finally able to go back and see the kitten I was interested in. Once in the kitten room, an unfriendly employee showed me the kitten and let me pet her and see her for only a few minutes before asking if I wanted to adopt her. I asked for some extra time to make a really important and big decision of adopting her and he said that there were other people waiting to see this same kitten, so I had 5 minutes to decide. After my exact 5 minutes were up, I decided to take this kitten home and then was told to wait back in line for another 30 minutes in order to finalize the adoption paperwork. I tried to be as patient as possible with them. But I felt very rushed and pressured to adopt her only because they had a tight ship to run and other people were interested in the kitten. I was glad to see such a high demand for adopting kittens and puppies at that shelter, but I felt their adoption process was cold and methodical. But maybe the county runs it that way for a reason, I don't know. I'm just sharing how my experience went down that day. I love the little kitten I adopted though and fortunately she was already spayed and came to me healthy without any fleas, diseases, or respiratory issues. read more

I've visited the VCAS website for 2 years looking for the perfect cat to join our family. I have severe cat allergies so I thought the chances were slim to none, but it finally happened. We rescued Shiba, who had just had her kittens taken from her and been spayed. Nevertheless, she is so sweet, and for the first time in my life I'm not allergic to a cat. Thank you VCAS. Bedside manner - 2/10 Sympathy when putting a pet down - 2/10 I came to visit today with a friend who was informed that their cat was found and needed to be put down ... that was it ; that was the extent of the call. As we waited, a worker named Laura came and basically was like "we're about to get started, you want to be there or not". Her attitude , tone, and demeanor was very dismissive and rude given the situation. When we got to the back, which I'll speak on later, I began asking questions to which she had no answer for and ultimately responded with "I just got in from the weekend, I'm not sure - sorry". She then got someone else and I repeated the questions and she was able to offer a little more background. Long story short, my friend received a call as mentioned above but no one told them of their options, the cats situation, or how they ultimately came to the decision that she needed to be put down. I feel like in a situation like that - I would want to make sure this is the best option! They said no labs or scans were done, just vet recommendation. Ultimately, they decided to put her down once more info was given but come on! Now back to the procedure room, it was a small closet type space with a steel table and an old towel. That was it. And she was brought out on a blanket. With the tight space and animals crying and barking in the background, it wasn't really a serene, good place to pass an pet - just my opinion. The only thing good - to me - was they allowed my friend ample amount of time to say goodbye and once the questions were out of the way - they were communicative and gentle with the procedure and the passing of my friends family member. Other than that - I would not take my pet their to be put down if I ever had to experience that again. Prayers to my friend and his loss. read more

We LOVE that VCAS offers a reading program called Rescue Readers. It has been a fun bonding period for my son and I, and he has learned a lot about empathy and compassion for animals in shelters. VCAS does the best they can to provide for all the animals in their care, which can be challenging given the number of animals they have. We found a stray dog a few weeks ago. I absolutely did not want to take him to the Camarillo shelter because I was convinced it was a kill shelter. It is not and I was so completely wrong. That policy changed years ago. He was not neutered, he had cuts all over him, had worms and was limping. He had a collar in that was a little too tight. And he did not know how to walk through door ways or how to access stairs. He did not understand a leash but was extremely loving. He had to have been in someone's backyard for a few years. I took him to the shelter where he had to stay for a week to be checked out and to see if an owner stepped forward. We visited him a few times and no one ever came. On day 6 we went and officially adopted him. They were so kind and took such good care of the animals there. They all had toys and blankets and play time out of the kennels. We found him so we had the option to take him home before he was offered up for adoption to anyone else. They even spent 45 minutes with us to see if my current dog and this dog would be compatible. It was a great experience. Now I have a 2 year old doggy that has never lived inside before sleeping on my couch. He is so smart and with live and patience he will learn and live a happy life with people who actually want him around. read more

Yesterday my dog walking with my grandma and the Aviation Place set off a huge pop and my dog (Lula) bolted. With the help of the ring app, missing pets of Camarillo, the man who saved her and brought her in, and this shelter....I would have never bee n able to have my baby back home. Kathy, to the receptionists, you were wonderful, your patience, kindness, empathy, and guidance was exactly what we needed at the time, especially because I have never had a dog get lost. I would say that overall this location does a decent job of attempting to match rescuers with new "furever" friends. I have attend numerous events at this shelter and the staff and volunteers are usually quite friendly and helpful. My issue is with the licensing system. We have lived in Ventura County for over 26 years and have always had dogs. In the past, we have simply been able to drop off or mail in our renewal with any necessary paperwork and have our renewal updated. The tag we had was good year to year. One of our dogs needed an update rabies certificate last year. Since she's elderly, we chose to renew one year at a time. Last year I was told that I had to renew on PetHub as that was the online program they were now using. I paid the additional monies required because I was told that I had to get a new digital tag. It took months to get the tag and I had to make more than one call to verify that everything was current. This year I received notice that I need to now renew on Docupet, as they are no longer using PetHub. I tried numerous times to renew and get the "free tag" that VCAS offers through Docupet. The program wouldn't let me submit my request. It kept sending me back to a previous page to purchase a custom tag. Today I took my payment over in person. The door was locked so I rang and advised that I simply wanted to hand in my payment and renewal request. The employee told me she could take it because "they weren't open". She told me I could mail it or come back another day. I wasn't asking her to give me a tag on the spot. I just wanted her to take my application and payment (which was already in an envelope) to get the process started. If I had mailed it, it would have been processed in that same office when they received my application and handled it in the order it was received. I don't understand why they wouldn't simply take my envelope and add it to the payments that come in by mail to be processed when they were next "open". Hopefully next year will provide a much simpler process. read more

I've always been a person to advocate for adopting pets from shelters over buying them from breeders. Having adopted a dog from VCAS over 10 years ago, I thought I would go through the process again. I joined the wait list today and was contacted by staff informing me that the dog was reserved by a rescue partner for evaluation to be a service animal. I then inquired about a recent post I saw on yelp stating that the public has priority over rescue facilities and if this policy has changed. The staff member said that is correct however, they stated that the Sam Simon Foundation has priority over the public since they are looking for dogs to be service animals. While it's disappointing that any rescue partner would have priority over the public to the point where they can go in and select a dog before it's adoptable date; I understand in this instance and hope the dog works out well for their new owner. read more

This animal shelter is big and has a lot of options for dogs, cats and rabbits. There's plenty of free parking. You walk yourself in and start walking around and looking at all the kennels. They have a large variety. You can ask to meet the dog and spend some time to play with them to see if it's a good fit before you adopt. The bathrooms are clean and they have hand sanitizer. The line in the office can be long and may take a while. However staff is friendly and the adoption process is easy. read more

Last Saturday I had the best experience adopting at a Shelter EVER. The "wait list" options worked for me, as I made SURE that I was first in line to see the cat I was interested in. I got a call from the Shelter and was told a lot about her history, and then I was able to see her in person. The facility was clean, the folks working there were friendly, and the shelter team member who showed me the cat was EXCELLENT in reading her behavior and advising me. In the end, I adopted Annie, a 3-year old female calico, and couldn't be any more satisfied -- with the cat, with the Shelter staff, and with the overall experience. I would highly recommend this place! Annie and I are like long-lost friends, thanks to the Shelter for keeping her safe before she found a home with me. read more

Turned in a dog and it's adoption date was 9/21/23. Per your website it states, "Any person, recorded to be the source of the animal's impound, who turns over a stray animal to this Department, has the first option to adopt the animal if/when the animal becomes available for adoption." The dog was adopted before this date. The answer given when inquiring about the dog was they were adopted by the person who turned him in. Someone is lying or not following protocol because I turned him in. If I would have known "FINDER'S FIRST RIGHTS OF REFUSAL" was non existent I would not have turned the dog in. read more

My dogs health had a sudden and very bad drop in health. I took her to a vet who said she no longer was going to have a good quality in life and the safes choice for her was to out her down. I spent the whole day at work crying my eyes out knowing she wouldn't survive another day in the amount of pain she was in( we got pin medication but it wasn't enough). When I called they didn't have appointments for euthanasia till the middle of the month but was I informed they offer emergency euthanasia for special cases. I took her in and while crying my eyes out informes the desk worker who brought another blond woman to help. She said how do I know you just don't want to put her down because you don't want her anymore and shrugged her shoulder saying she can't help me. Mind you this I'm crying can't even talk while my dog has been with me since she was born and at the time she was 14 years old. I kept crying informed her she wasn't in good health and that I had her with me if some one can just look at her. A lovely vet came out took one look at her and said that she would be able to euthanize her. After I got the paper work done and paid everyone else was supper understand and helpful. But that one woman who made me feel like a horrible pet owner assuming I didn't want my dog anymore make that day so much harder for me. read more

I was looking to adopt a dog and had scheduled an appointment to do so. I had brought my dog along to do a meet and greet the between two dogs and the individual helping us was not helpful and a little stand off-ish when introducing the dog to us. When it came time to do the meet and greet, the individual made some unnecessary rude comments about my puppy's behavior and highly encouraged us that it was a bad match. When asked if there were any other dogs that could match my puppy's energy, the individual was very unhelpful and pretty much just walked away. I don't think I will be coming back to adopt a dog there as it seemed the whole experience for adopting was not very encouraging or welcoming. read more

Paid for my dog renewal license and sent the paper work in with the proof of updated shots and the check was cashed! Over a year later I received a notice of delinquency. I double checked and yes the check had been cleared through my credit union. So I called to see what the issue was. Finally got through to some and explained my issue. I was told I would have to file a report and send proof of payment and someone would get back to me. So no call back or email. So called again, this time I was told they never got the proof of rabies. Well they got the check and cashed it so they must have gotten the other paper work too!! So once again I'm doing what I was told to do and nothing back from anyone! Until they intercepted my tax refund for 3 times the amount I already paid!! Wow!! I will be filing a grievance with proof that this was paid in full when it was due! read more

I have to agree with most of the previous reviews regarding their current adoption process in light of the pandemic. You have to schedule a "counseling session" online on their website. It is somewhat of a lengthy application (asks for personal information such as address and drivers license number, which I do not have my DL # memorized) and asks about your current home environment. You choose a date and time for them to call you for the session and usually the only appointments available are at least 3 days out. The flaw in their application process lies in the fact that if the animal you are interested in happens to get adopted, the cancel your appointment and should you be interested in another dog, you have to completely redo the application AND book a new appointment date. So, this means that your new appointment date is likely another 3 days. This makes it very difficult and competitive to actually have a chance to adopt an animal. I've done this about 3 times already and all of the animals I was interested in have been adopted. Which is great, I'm truly happy for the animals, but it is a bit discouraging knowing the horrible application process that is making it nearly impossible to adopt an animal. I think they should not cancel the appointments if the animal of interest gets adopted. Instead, they should keep the appointment and ask if there are any other animals we were interested. If not, then fine cancel the appointment. But I'm sure there are plenty of people that would be interested in another animal should their first choice be adopted. Another thing- some of the staff is not very friendly at all. I called to inquire about one of the dogs I was interested in, and the man just had a horrible attitude. Cut me off while I was speaking, and made me feel stupid for even calling. He said something along the lines of "MAAM?? How am I supposed to know anything about the dog?? She just got here today!!!" Like I get that, but he didn't have to be so rude. I have a 2 year old and a dog that was rescued (so he has anxiety and other issues), so if I'm going to bring another animal into my family, then I'd like to get some information before I go and fill out a whole application for an appointment that may be canceled. He just had the ugliest attitude. Long story long- the adoption process during Covid is flawed, and don't let rude employees answer the phone. read more

I've applied for, and tracked, numerous dogs from this facility. Refreshing the shelters' page until a new dog is listed, I immediately contact them only to be informed that it already has a committed adopter. Invariably the dog is seen on Adopt a Pet or Petfinder, being adopted out from one of their rescue partners for a hefty sum. Apparently VCAS gives priority to their rescue partners over the public. Yet they're more than happy to take the publics' money and supply donations. They have extensive behind-the-scene and online volunteer networks. Reaching anyone with an internet connection. Soliciting fosters, supplies and money. My experience has been that the public won't get a puppy or highly adoptable dog from VCAS unless you're somehow affiliated with their volunteer/rescue groups. read more

I told the technician the issue and he said he would be at my house in 45 minutes. I have tried to adopt here several times in the past. I want to adopt instead of going to a pet shop. The process of adopting is unbelievably frustrating. The online portal is an improvement but I feel like the staff here have their friends and/or family get dibs on the animals available for adoption. Literally all of the small dogs are in very high demand get "adopted" before or on their adoptable date, but I wish I knew how to get on the before the pet is available for adoption list. It makes me also wonder how fair it is for older folks or people who simply don't have the ability to sign up so quickly. I know there is several lonely seniors that would love to adopt a small pet but can't because of this and just give up since they have NO chance! I hope at some point they consider making this more accessible for them . Invariably I have also seen some of the same lil dogs adopted from VCAS are now seen on Adopt a Pet or Petfinder, being adopted out from one of their rescue partners for a hefty sum ($300.00-850.00.) read more

Shame on me for not writing my review sooner! I don't even think I have the words to express how grateful I am to have been able to adopt my cat here! It would be an understatement to say that it was life-changing: for my cat, myself and my family! I have never had a cat before and I didn't have even the slightest clue. I knew I couldn't have a dog due to my inconsistent schedule, so I decided to look around at the beautiful cats. I wanted to take them all, but one just stuck out to me. A 2-year-old tuxedo cat who would purr like crazy and roll onto her back every time I came to see her! I was told she had been there for a while because she had a vitamin K deficiency and was having problems with blood clotting after being fixed. She was essentially labeled as a "sick cat" by being put on a list with other animals who has health conditions. I knew I couldn't bare the expense of a sick cat, but I couldn't get kitty off of my mind. I went back to see her every day after work for 2 weeks! Finally, the vet assistant came out and asked me "What are you waiting for? Why don't you take her home?" I went home and that kept replaying in my mind! I went back and picked her up two days later and I've never been happier! We took our new kitty "Jazz" for a check-up and she had a clean bill of health! She has had no issues and has been such a wonderful companion. It took her a bit to adjust but she has the sweetest temperament and loves her new home! I was always treated kindly by the staff and they made it as easy as possible. Sandra was very personable and had no problem answering any of my questions. In the end, it wasn't about me or how I was treated as much as it was about giving an animal a good home. Adoption in and of itself is such a wonderful feeling/experience. With all of that said, I really think people on here should watch what they say. By leaving frivolous negative reviews, you are possibly hindering the chance of a pet being adopted. So what if the shelter is always busy? Waiting is part of life. The crates have pee in them? Guess what?! That's where the animal lives! Do something about it! Before you leave a bad review, think! Are you doing this for YOU or the sake of the ANIMAL? It's not a petting zoo! Please open your heart and adopt! It's the best decision I have ever made. read more

First time going to the shelter. Went to look at adopting a senior dog. There was a promotion of mostly free adoption that weekend. Walked through the dog kennels. Wanted to take them all. Saw a quiet German Shephard girl sitting patiently between two loud yappy dogs. Knew she was the one. They had named her Sigourney and stated that she was found wandering lost. We found the dog we wanted. Ten minutes into discussing her the front desk rings the volunteer to tell us that she's already adopted by someone who came in earlier that day. Why didn't the computer say that before he signed our adoption papers? You're playing with peoples emotions. This policy needs to change. We were standing there ready to take her home right then in there. David was so helpful in the process and wanted to help us best he could.
