Where do I begin? My relationship within Dr Contento began over 17+ years ago when i saw him in Manhattan. I'm a a Brooklyn girl tried and true and I don't hesitate to make the trek to see him all the way in the Bronx. When you look for eye care or any medical care in general, you don't look for the closest; you look for the best. Dr. Contento is an esteemed professor at SUNY Dept of Optometry, so he teaches the best of best in the field. I put my eyes in his care and I've never looked back. He has a wicked sense of humor and puts you at ease from the first glance. The office is a family establishment and everyone treats you like they have known you for years. If it seems like I am girl fanning; I am. I don't take for granted my health or my healthcare team. I made an appointment for 2pm. They called the day before and asked to move it up an hour. I agreed, but when I showed up at 1, I still had to wait until 2:30 to see the doctor. Another costumer left while I was there because they had waited for over 2 hours. read more

I had seen some critical reviews of this place, but the convenient location was too much to pass up. I wasn't disappointed. It was basically what I expect from a visit to the eye doctor. Filled out some paperwork, waited a while, had a routine eye exam. Dr. Kaplan was friendly and professional. I know this review sounds overly positive to the point of suspicion, but I guess I went in expecting some kind of problem, due to some of the reviews I'd seen. This place is fantastic. Ok, so you may have to wait a bit, but hell, it's an extremely knowledgeable office that provides thorough exams. After having a horrible experience in Manhattan at another eye doctor, I decided to come back to my old office up in the Bronx. Having moved out of the bronx, I thought a more convenient doctor in Manhattan would provide service that was just as good. Was I wrong!! Am I glad I came back to this office because the service was exactly what I needed. They answered my questions, listened to my concerns, and made sure I left with the right information. I've seen Dr. Kaplan for about 4 years now and i have nothing but wonderful things to say about him and this practice. Yes, there is a little bit of a wait. but its worth the while! i am always given excellent service and never feel rushed. furthermore, Dr. Kaplan answers all of my questions without hesitation. I have visited this office three times and seen both Dr. Contento and Dr. Kaplan. I have been disappointed by the service and hoped it would have improved. My initial experience consisted of hour+ waits to been seen and internal communication errors that resulted in me having to argue with the office about the correct prescription. I returned a year later, and found the waits and service to remain poor. There are many appointments available and the office staff is helpful, but don't be fooled, you will wait hours and be disappointed. There must be better options in the region. read more

The service is bad. I bought a pair of expensive prescription glasses in 2010 with all features including progressive and scratch resistance. After 10 months there was have a big scratch on the lens which is not to suppose to happen. I went to Eye Care Unlimited on Crosby Avenue and Mr. Ethan helped me and the warranty will be able to replace the lens for free. And also asked him that since it will be change the lens, If I can check my prescription and checked on the computer VSP web page for my benefits and he said no problem with that plan. Also told me that there was no copay on the medical examination. I was offered an appointment with the specialist the following week. To my surprise when I got to the appointment I had to pay my copay (which I did) and also 12 day's later they called and told me that if I change my prescription that would not be covered only the old lens with the old prescription and not the new prescription with the old frames. If I change my lens it need to be with the old prescription, WHY DID THEY MAKE ME LOSE MY TIME AND MONEY, THEY ARE THE ONE THAT THEY CONFIRMED THAT I WILL BE ABLE TO DO IT. I WON'T BE GOING BACK AND WOULDN'T RECOMMEND THIS PLACE, the employees are not capable or very well trained about coverage and benefits. read more

Dr. Kaplan and her office staff are phenomenal - I have been coming here for a good 2 years now. Her and the staff - they are always friendly, she has always had one of the nicest doctor/patient disposition I have ever come across. She always is pleasant has a great smile on her face, she cares about us her patients, and most of all she takes the time to explain a procedure before she does it so you are not left wondering what the heck is happening. I went to this place to get new glasses. They did a thorough job and I selected some nice frames that were covered by my union. However, when I received my bifocal glasses it seemed something was wrong with them . I was not seeing properly and thought it had to do with increased strength. I went back and saw a representative of this office. He said they were fine. ; and told me I had to get use to them. Later, after this I learned that the problem was that the bifocal line had been placed too high and was distorting my distance vision. I am very disappointed with these glasses. I have to wear them very low on my nose to see distance things clearly. I have never had such an experience before with any other places that made my glasses. read more

I've never been to this location but it's the same group of doctors as the one on Morris Park. I've been going to Eye Care Unlimited most of my life even since I moved out of the neighborhood. My entire family goes there and every time we go to another eye doctor for convenience's sake we end up right back with the Contento family. I started off with Dr. Contento, Sr. and then his son and now his daughter-in-law. All first class. As are any other doctors they bring in. The staff is terrific as well. I don't know if Gina is still there. If she is, you're in luck but even if she isn't, I still highly recommend it. read more

Emergency walk in. Didn't charge me but the arm of my glasses broke and they took it down stairs to glue it. Had I know they were going to glue it I wouldn't have stopped by. Also, the front girls looked way to young to know what they were doing. read more

I have never experienced such incompetence and unprofessionalism in my life. We regretfully trusted this office to fit our 5 week old for contacts after he had cataract surgeries. Although Dr Kaplan has perfectly nice and seems to be fine at his job his office staff makes this place a nightmare. We found out at 5 months our son was wearing the entirely wrong prescription in his eyes and that was due to the negligence of the office staff and his office manager, Pat. Instead of acknowledging the error and apologizing we have been treated as though WE are the ones with the issue. The office has zero communication skills, and you have to follow up with them to make sure they are doing their jobs correctly and even then you can't be sure. And on top of it all I was just screamed at by the office manager that "it doesn't matter what mistakes we made your son has no vision in that eye!" Avoid them at all costs!! Not only do they charge you double for what contacts actually cost to "cover their fee" you will additionally be getting in touch with malpractice lawyers. This place should be shut down!!!! read more

No respect for patient's time here, infallibly at least 40 minutes past your appointment time before doctor sees you. More staff than patients but if you point out the issue the doctor is more concerned with passing the blame off to receptionists than to simply apologize and start the examination. Dealt with this for years before walking out of this place. Also misdiagnosed a relative as having glaucoma for years until a specialist later confirmed no glaucoma. Seems like the doctor loves giving referrals for LASIK and other things than simply doing their job. No apology ever offered for their lack of professionalism. read more

I recently took my aunt over to see Dr. Contento. After having her see another specialist who recommended cataract surgery we felt it was necessary for a second opinion. Dr. Contento took care of us as if we were family, he recommended NOT having surgery but corrective glasses were all that were needed. My aunt is relieved and so am I. I am very disappointed. Had scheduled an appointment 2 wks in advance due to my work schedule & was told my insurance was accepted at the time I scheduled the appt. I go in the day of my appt. to be told by two young girls working the front desk "ooops this particular one we don't take but you can pay for the visit". Mind you when I called I was told it was accepted! This is what happens when you have young girls running the front desk & phones. Needless to say I walked out!
