Short version- great doctor, horrible front desk. If you have patience to deal with these folks who seem to have forgotten that customers pay for their paychecks, I will highly recommend Dr Chuang. Long version - Dr Kenji Chuang has been one of the best optometrists I have worked with - whether it comes to his personality or investment in technology. However, as nice as he is, his staff is rude, arrogant and outright childish. Their tone of talking to people - not just me based on other reviews - is unprofessional and loud. For example, this week when I called to check what time they close, the lady seemed to insist multiple times that the shop closes at "sharp" 5:30, in spite of telling her I will be there by 3:30. It was almost like she did not want my business. Then in the shop when I was trying out frames, they insisted I had the mask on. How does one try out eyeglasses on top of the mask and be convinced both about fit and aesthetics. Moreover, the county guidelines specifically allow removal of mask for - and I quote - "when they are actively performing an activity that cannot be done while wearing a face covering (e.g., actively eating or drinking, swimming or showering in a fitness facility, or obtaining a medical or cosmetic service requiring removal of a face covering);". So the bottom line is - if you like unnecessary drama in your life and don't mind putting up with these kind of behaviors, I highly recommend the doctor. Doctors are kind and attentive but office manager Ed is incredibly rude and impatient. Very passive aggressive towards my mother who has a learning disability and is not a native English speaker. Whenever she asked questions about glasses or requested an explanation for charges he would audibly sigh and answer unprofessionally with little patience. I have been coming here for 3 years already and this review is long overdue. Dr Kenji is super friendly and professional. The optometry exams are very thorough. I go there with my son and we take turns for our exams. The best part is they never push you to buy the eye frames. I have a friend who lives in Japan and after a trip to Japan and having purchased my frames there, now I order them through her ;-) One of the reasons for changing optometrist was because the other place was always super pushy to buy the most expensive brand frames. I did not have a good experience there. My friend referred me to this office. The eye test itself was good and the lady who gave me the test was really nice. However the front desk was kind of a mess. I ordered one pair of reading glasses and one pair of bifocals. The reading glasses I received within a day or two which was great. My bifocals arrived two weeks later and did not work. The new girl at the front desk had measured my eyes wrong when she marked the glasses. So they had to send them back and redo them. I also ordered the bifocal glasses to transition in the sun to sunglasses. This I did not get. So I actually paid a lot of money for something I didn't get. My frames are way too big as well which they were not when I handed them in for the new glass replacements. Both pairs were stretch out so bad I have been in there twice since to get them adjusted. When they adjusted my reading glasses the second time they seem better. My bifocals I cannot even wear at all. The whole purpose of the bifocals was to be able to use them in the car and have the sun transition - which they do not do, even though I paid for that, so they are useless. And I couldn't go and get a new pair somewhere else because my insurance only allowed one pair per year. I paid out of pocket for second pair. All in all I spent $600 to be scammed. I should've gone to Costco as most people recommended, but I prefer to support local businesses. Never again. I will be contacting them to see if they will correct my glasses for a third time. I put it off till after the holidays as every time I go in there they make me wait forever at the front desk. The guy working there always has something more important to do on his computer than to assist a customer. Last visit took me 1 hr 45 minutes just waiting. And not because they were full of customers. What a scam. I can't believe I am writing such a horrible review, but this time I was overwhelmed with poor service. Really really bad. It makes me mad that they charged me all this money for something I didn't get, total rip off. read more

EEK! No, no freebie--I had to pay. Oh, darn! Anyway, these guys are amazing--extremely friendly, calm, sense of humor. Everyone here makes you feel like a temporary family person. You not only get an optometry exam but also a real intensive eye exam making sure your eyes are healthy and ready to be corrected with the right lenses. Great experience overall. Modern equipment including retinal imager (which can help detect problems like detached retinas before they become serious) and automatic prescription measurement (which Dr. Chuang uses in tandem with the "which is clearer, 1 or 2" method :). Dr. Chuang took the time to really fine-tune my prescription, and recommended some contacts that I love - with them I can see 20/20 near and far (with presbyopia and a slight stigmatism in one eye). If you're price-sensitive, make sure you get detailed pricing for everything you're getting. I'd asked when making the appointment and was given a price for the exam and retinal imaging. After the exam, I found out that the contact lens fitting cost extra, and "extra" was the same price as the exam itself, nearly doubling my total. Wouldn't stop me from going back (I have a follow-up appointment in 3 weeks in fact), but if you don't have awesome insurance, make sure you let the doctor know you need to monitor costs (I'd only talked to Ed about pricing). read more

I was recommended here after telling a friend I was unhappy with the service at my optometrist (uncaring attitude, old equipment, etc) and I was really happy they did! Dr. Chuang is very thorough and gave me great recommendations for contacts, not to mention their office has state of the art equipment including a machine that can cut custom fitted glasses lenses and another machine that can take a picture of the back of your eyeball that I've only really seen in ophthalmologist's offices. This is a terrific place, with unique designers and brands for adults that you don't see everywhere else. Their selection for kids' frames is impressive too; I was so tired of all the boring typical kids' frames at other places. It was nice to finally find attractive styles here for boys and girls. It's a standalone office on the street, but there is helpful signage to find it, and there is front, side and back street parking available, as well as nearby lots. It is very easy to make an appointment here (I've done both online and phone appointments) for traditional services, but I have dropped in unexpectedly and the office has been accommodating. For example, the younglings needed their frames adjusted and broken nosepads repaired and the office was quick and helpful. The office is clean and bright. We always feel welcome here to try out every frame (we do, ha ha!). I appreciate that the exams and procedures are comprehensive and seem state of the art. Both docs are exceptional, professional and ready to clearly explain everything. The front office staff is also friendly. I work at a power plant and I need presciption safety glasses. Often I have to go to two different eye doctors to get both regular prescription glasses and prescription safety glasses. At the Eye Contact, they carry both types. The staff there is always excellent. My wife a many different eye issues and medical problems and they are always very patient with her. Dr. Kawazoe gave me the finest examination I have ever had in my entire life. She was thorough to a tee and even allowed me to test outside light conditions. She listened to my concerns and helped me find the exact prescription. That was three years ago and I now live in a different city in the San Diego area. Ed Boxer just assisted me with emailing me a copy of my prescription that I had misplaced. Even though it is old, he helped me get the information I needed for comparison purposes. My family will never return to Eye Contact Optometry. While traveling to LA I lost one of my contact lenses. Luckily, I was able to locate an optometrist who agreed to stay open after hours to help me. When I called Eye Contact asking for my prescription they would not give it to me. I asked them to fax it to the optometrist in LA and the woman on the phone began to argue with me. I explained that this was an emergency and if she would just fax me my prescription everything would be fine. She muttered an angry, "OK," before hanging up on me. Upon arriving at the optometrist in LA, who was already closed, I learned that Eye Contact had not faxed over the needed information. I tried calling again for the next hour, Eye Contact would not answer the phone. I was extremely disappointed and upset. We will not be going back to Eye Contact ever again. read more

I think I'm luckily "blessed" with bad eye site because I am considered medically necessary coverage, however Dr. Chuang is probably one of the best individuals out there. Today's reason to be thankful is that I bumped into Eye Contact Optometry :). We moved to the Los Gatos area recently and my son needed an eye check and a new pair of vision glasses. We found Eye Contact Optometry through our Vision insurance company and called for a same-day appointment. They were very accommodating and found us a spot, which I was very thankful for, since it's December 29th! The visit was very thorough. The doctor took all the time to explain the science of the eye to my teenage son, who appeared interested in the subject. I couldn't have been happier. Once done, the selection of frames was excellent and again they were extremely accommodating, explained exactly what the insurance covered and what not. I was new to the Los Gatos area and hadn't located a new eye doc yet, but then one day lost one of my hard contacts. I called a couple other places first, but they all said it would be 1-2 weeks to get me a new set of hard contacts and/or eye glasses (I didn't have a backup pair--my bad). Then I called EyeContact and they were able to get me in to see the doc the same day (lucky me, maybe they were just slow that day--can't guarantee everyone would get that lucky). The doc was very kind and polite, the equipment all new, the office clean and cute (although some more comfy seating and reading material in the waiting area wouldn't be amiss), and the receptionist very knowledgeable, informative, and helpful. I got a full eye exam, including my prescription checked, the checks for glaucoma and macular degeneration, and got photos of my retina as a baseline for future exams. The receptionist and the doctor helped me pick out frames for my backup glasses, and I was told my contacts and glasses would be ready within just a few days. I was very happy with my experience there, and I intend to keep this office as my optometrist for as long as I live in Los Gatos (unless things suddenly change for the worse there). My husband and I decided to get our eye exams done here while on a mini vacation to the bay area...because there's nothing like celebrating labor day with a trip to the optometrist! There is nothing I appreciate more than a clean and organized store. Dr. Chuang did a very thorough eye exam, is very knowledgeable, and above all, is very patient.
