Since I spend long hours drafting in AutoCAD, working at a computer, and reading, he carefully tailored my prescription to support screen time and reading rather than overprescribing for distance vision that I didn't truly need. I appreciated how detailed and observant he was throughout the exam, which gave me peace of mind. My experience at Dr. Umeda's office was nothing but stellar. I went for a regular eye check up and to get new glasses. The staff were very friendly and explained everything clearly. Is it weird to look forward to you annual eye exam? Well Dr. Umeda's office will make you feel the same. Staff is super friendly and complete your exam quickly and comprehensively. Dr. Umeda is very friendly, easy to talk to, knowledgeable about your eye health and explains your results in an easily understandable way. Booking an appointment is easy. You can book online even as a new patient and fill out your health forms through their website. They're open until 7 pm on some days so you don't have to cut into your regular work schedule if you don't want to. I don't order my glasses from the office just because I primarily wear contacts. I do order my contacts through their office and the price with insurance is reasonable. It takes the headache out of finding the cheapest deal online and then having to wait for your contacts to ship. They usually give me a rebate form for my acuvue contacts to save some $$. Very COVID safe. They have you call the front desk before walking into the office for your appointment and to pick up contacts or glasses. Masks required and Dr. Umeda will wear a face shield if he has to get close to your face during your exam. I scheduled an appointment with a new place but can't be seen until early February and I called them to see if they could mail me contacts because the new place wouldn't even give me a sample pair until my visit.. well! I came in for my first visit the other day and I cannot speak more highly of Dr. Umeda and his staff. I felt right at home as soon as I entered the office. They do a very thorough job and always put the patient first. The frames there are a bit on the expensive side (most of the ones I looked at ranged from $250 to $350). This is a lot, even if you have great insurance that covers a good portion of that. However, they have a large selection of frames and some of the top brands! Also, please note that the contact fitting exam costs $60 (could be more depending on your insurance). I saw three different ODs for a couple of years but the prescribed glasses didn't work well somehow. The main problem was that my eyes got fatigue due to flaring and other issues. Dr. Umeda solved the problems and I wish I could have met him earlier. Dr. Umeda even called me and asked me to see an ophthalmologist a few days after I left his office because he found something in the images taken in his office. First off, the office staff does a great job getting your pre-exam eye tests done. One of the tests takes an image of the inside of your eyes. It is definitely worth having done and Dr. Umeda does an amazing job teaching you about your eye and goes through the images with you. I hate getting my pupils dilated. You basically give up half the day while your eyes say "WTF?!" and calm the hell down. Not at Dr Umeda's office! They've leased this thing that you look into. It has the red ring of death, but it is not going to kill you. Basicaly, it flashes a bright green light, with which it then takes a picture of your eye. Much better than dilation! In fact, they will even email you the files, and you can post it to Facebook or whatever the hell it is you want to do with them. In addition, they can do it next time and compare to see if you're any closer to the dreaded glaucoma. The decor has some neat Buster Posey and Tim Lincecum paraphernalia, so if you are a Giants fan, support your kind. read more

I've been coming to Dr. Umeda for many years. Probably not as regularly as I should, but that's mostly because I refuse to admit I'm getting old and need new glasses. It's certainly not his fault that I'm pig-headed. As everyone else says, his staff is very friendly and very professional. His exams are REALLY thorough and you really feel like he's really taking his time to make sure you understand everything he's doing and seeing regarding your eyes and vision. I just had my annual eye exam from Dr. Umeda and was so happy that my vision has actually improved a bit. Last year, Dr. Umeda gave me a monovision lense fitting since I have reached the stage of needing bifocals. Now, it seems my eyesight isn't deteriorating as much and I don't have to wear readers! You always feel as though you are getting a very thorough and professional eye exam here. They have the latest technology to evaluate the retina which can detect many diseases. Seems like a very good idea, especially as you get older. The staff here is also very helpful in figuring out how to use your insurance benefits most effectively. If you wear contacts and glasses, this is a plus since it can be very confusing. Plus they are very good about having you try sample contacts until you find ones that are comfortable for you. This was the first time I have been to the eye doctor and I was a bit nervous. The idea of needing glasses takes enough getting used to but facing this with a doctor makes it worse. Been a customer of Dr Umeda for a long time. I've tried a few other eye doctors here and there, but he's definitely the best one in my area and I've stopped bothering to shop around. He is courteous and very knowledgeable, is open on Saturdays, and his staff is outstanding. They'll try to fix your glasses if you bust them and are very friendly. The office is well appointed, clean, and organized. If I remember, a while ago it was in Westgate but now it's on Hamilton Ave, a bit isolated but not as crowded either. Additionally, the doc and his staff aren't pushy. If you don't want a feature, they won't try to badger you into getting it. They have good, objective opinion on frames and don't try to always sell you the most expensive ones. read more

Dr. Umeda must be a capricorn... or else he's from a place where "workaholic" isn't a bad thing (think mid-western states). I agree with the FTR, he's not warm and fuzzy, but he knows his shtuff. I came to Dr. Umeda to try contacts again. he was very patient with me as i tried some three trial lenses, took a pair home for a week, and made my decision. because i have an astigmatism that is normally reserved for aliens from another dimension, my contacts must always be special ordered. he was very kind and imparted all of his knowledge of astigmatisms upon me... oh, and when my contacts tore a week before my prescription was due to arrive, he was kind enough to pass out a pair of the newest fancy trial-wears. (again, trial wear lenses SPECIAL ordered. from the alien eye factory). can i give more than five stars for the fabulous office hours he has... 9 - 8 almost every weekday and even saturday hours! read more

Great office staff, great doctor, and state-of-the-art diagnostics. Dr. Umeda was very thorough and took the time to answer all of my questions and explain everything he was doing in great detail. He also uses an Optomap device to look at your retina, etc. instead of dilating the eyes. I prefer this method as it doesn't kill your vision for the hours after the exam.
