Horrible customer service. Tried calling them and was unable to get through anything with their AI agent wasting literally 10 minutes of your time, without able to do anything. And without the ability to bypass. Well, after wasting significant amount of time with their AI agent, still got nothing out of it. The woman that answers the phone who has been there a good 5 years is absolutely the most rude admin I've ever spoken to. And it's not like I go over there all the time or call all the time, but I don't forget experiences like that. EVERY time I have called she has been short in tone and patience. Every time. Not sure why this hasn't been rectified. I hear it in her voice. She's just absolutely annoyed. Dr. Gulmiri is fantastic and the reason I kept going back, but good luck trying to get in there to see her to actually see her. It's a teaching facility, but it's a slight bit disconcerting having to go through the process each time of seeing so many students that don't have all the tricks yet AND for the appointments to last as long as they do (150 minutes usually). Plus, Dr. Gulmiri is only in on Wednesday's. The other guy at the counter doing phones is there to intercept all communication so if you have actual questions for the doctor you'll never get a call back, just a promise that he'll do his best to pass the question on. It's a bummer. I saw Dr. Baylus in 2012 who was great. Dr. Gulmiri is also great. Front of house staff leaves a TON to be desired. Going to a new facility for the first time and I hope they're great. I just can't deal with all of this post-pandemic approach. You can't even get someone on the phone without doing the whole game of tricking their AI answering system (which is remarkably awful). I have nothing but positive thoughts regarding my recent visit/experience to NECO. The highlights of my first visit here were: The Check-in process was swift, the wait for my practitioner was brief. Carrigan was oozing with a personable, professionalism. She is polite and attentive. She could answer all of my many questions eloquently. She clearly knows a great deal and was willing to share her knowledge. She has a great respect for Dr.O'Donoghue who sat in later in my visit and corroborated all of Carrigan's findings. He explained in detail exactly the reason I was having the problem with my current prescription and offered a solution. The office was immaculate. The restroom was pristine. I have been going to NECO for nearly 15 years and they have been fantastic every year. A great team.

So I had a nose surgery back in september I had just turned 18 three months before. With the nose surgery you can't wear glasses for about a month or two. My eye sight is extremely bad. I am a patient at Neco and always been since a kid all my siblings go to Neco since we were infants. So I call and ask about the possibility of a contact appointment they schedule it for me. Me I had no more money to my name at the time so I would NEVER NEVER book if I knew any type of charge would fall back on me. Usually my insurance covers these things. So the lady at the desk when I check is telling me about the appointment but fails to tell me I'll be charged for a fitting. She literally states to me "If you end up choosing to wear contacts they are 120" per month I'd assume. So I tell her I might not buy the contacts right away just want to see if I'm a right fit. The whole appointment was stressful I couldn't even put them in I didn't even want to get contacts anymore since I struggled so much. I then get back to the front thanking them for their help when the lady then stops me to tell me I need to pay 120 for the fitting. I also had the test contacts that they gave me so I said if it's because of these I'll give them back. they said no you have to pay 120. Again as a newly 18 year old no job and is in recovery and not supposed to work for a while I couldn't get that and it's because I was told one thing but now it's something different? I'm writing this review now because I been struggling with diabetes and my eyes are getting so much worse so I call letting them know about my insurance before hand and how it should be covered they say it is but they refused my service just now extremly rude and told me pay the day before or day after or you won't get your eye care. I could be going blind and the 120 is the only thing they want. I defend can try to pay it now but the thing is would you really want to pay something you really didn't have to if they just stated right away the cost of an appointment?? I would of never even booked to begin with I was supposed to be at home recovering but instead having a new bill dropped on me and I wasn't even going to do the contacts. read more

I called this place since it was near work and where I live. I got an appointment the next week. I saw Dr. O'Donoghue and was pleased with his service. I didn't have to wait long, and the appointment was quick but thorough. He was charming and hilarious, and I didn't mind all the drops put in my eyes. If your in a rush, don't go here. However, in my opinion, if my eyes are being checked by 2-3 different people (starts off usually with 2 students, then the main doctor comes in) I'm getting a thorough eye check. Ordering lenses from them is easy too. They'll put in what you need, they'll call ya once your lenses are in. I'm not sure if they truly "saved my eye" liked they claimed, but my last eye doctor thought using no rub was bad for your eye. Then I come here and they using those rubbing kits can lead to corneal damage. Either way, when I switched to no rub I was much happier. read more

Since I have lost my glasses and need the most recent prescription, I was looking for an optometry near campus and came across NECO on BU Student Health Services website. I filled up the online appointment form and received a call from NECO the next day to schedule my eye exam (Primary Eye Care to be specific, and it costs $175 without insurance coverage). Up till now, I give NECO's service a 9/10. I visited NECO three days later and had a really positive experience there. I waited for about 15 mins in the clinic and was greeted by Kaitlyn who later gave me a very comprehensive dilated eye exam. Kaitlyn was very patient as she answers my questions, and she constantly checked on me during the exam. Later, Dr. O'Donoghue came in and finalized my prescription, all while casually chatting with Kaitlyn and I. It took about an hour and half to complete the checkup, and I walked out happy knowing that my vision and eye health are both in good shape. P.S. I visited the clinic again later that day to purchase my glasses. NECO has a wide range of selection of glasses and sunglasses, so I highly recommend taking a look there before or after your clinical visit. read more

Tuy the south east asian gentleman that proctored my eye exam was incredibly rude and condescending from the very beginning of the entire process to the end. The heavy set african-american woman working at the reception desk was also deplorable in her treatment of not only myself but also another patient. The only saving grace of this god foresaken eye clinic were the older caucasian woman and younger hispanic woman who I only spoke to for a few moments as I was checking in but they were very helpful and encouraging. They both emanated a warm, kind demeanor. I wish I could describe the staff by more than just their appearances and ethnicities but I did not want to stay any longer to read name tags for this review. Take your needs elsewhere, somewhere will you be treated like a human being deserving of basic decency. read more

The exams are always painfully slow, but I find that the student doctors are generally nice enough. One only hopes that they are thorough! My real gripe though is with the unhelpful receptionists and office staff who manage to bungle my insurance claims. No matter how polite you are with them on the phone when scheduling an appointment, they are almost always surly and act like your questions about insurance are personally offensive to them. They were of no help in resolving my issues, and when I asked if they could call me if a later appointment opened up, they scoffed and said I could call back next week. Geez. It's really a 1-star place, but I bumped it up to 2-stars for the range of weekday and weekend hours. The office does function sort of as a "one-stop shop" for exams, eye care and contacts/glasses fittings. But honestly, I think the customer service is probably better at Lenscrafters. read more

I opted to switch from my current eye doctor to New England Eye because I'm a BU employee and get a discount here. I don't mind being seen by students; I wouldn't be a very good higher education professional if I did! However, I wish that had been made clear when I made the appointment. My exam went ok. The student was very sweet but you could tell she was very inexperienced. She did the part of the exam where they put really bright lights near your eye before checking my vision/prescription. My eyes were all messed up and "bleached" from the bright lights, and I felt a little rushed through the part where she checks my prescription. If she had switched the order and done the bright lights part at the end, I wouldn't have had to check my prescription while seeing stars and white patches in my vision. This doesn't leave me confident that my prescription will be accurate. I also lost a lot of confidence in the student when she kept commenting on how little she knew about contact lenses. She tried to reassure me that Dr. Kwok would double check everything she did, but he didn't. He checked my eyes when they were dilated and helped her look at my eye for a source of irritation, but he was otherwise absent from the exam. He didn't check my prescription or contact lens fit. The student basically told me I didn't need a fitting since I like my current brand of lenses (I agree). So ,why did I pay for a contact lens fitting?? I think the students need to be supervised better. She told me a lot of things "off the record." For example, I told her about an allergy I have to certain preservatives in contact lens cleaners. I asked her what kind of eye drops I could use. Her answer was, "Off the record, I'd just try a bunch of different ones until you find one that doesn't give you an allergic reaction." If I followed this advice, I'd likely contaminate all of my expensive contact lenses with bad drops, and I'd be subjecting myself to allergic reactions! I'll come back for the discount I get on frames, but I won't be back for eye exams. read more

The young eye doctors here who examine your eyes are very, very sweet, which is a very, very good thing because they are very, very slow. You will be spending a lot of time in their good company, so just relax if you can, and let them pull away at your eye lids to drop in those drops. I hate the feeling of big hands and little droppers swooping towards my innocent eyes, so I was not an easy patient, but they were as kind as they could be. After they are finished with their soft spoken torture you get some quality time with a real eye doctor who goes over everything with you and the doctors in training. I got a new prescription and some directions on how to keep my eyes healthy. It's a different experience, but I really did feel comfortable and didn't have anything else going on that day, otherwise I might have been annoyed at the length of time it took. Young, sweet doctors in training need to learn somehow. And they really are a very,very sweet bunch of people. read more

It's hard to have warm feelings about a place when you feel like you've just been SCAMMED, but I'll do my best. I've been to student-run medical clinics before when I was in undergrad back in California, and they were always an interesting experience. You get these eager-beaver students doing the most thorough examination of your eye, ear, whatever else you've ever had. They scan your eye, they check their little checklists, they scan your eye again, they scratch their heads. Then they run out and call Big Daddy Doctor in and he double-checks the eye and confirms that it's all gravy. The whole procedure takes about twice as long as LensCrafters would do it, but it's very thorough, and my contacts feel great. Now for the SCAMNATION. When I walked in, the lady at the reception desk asked for my insurance, so naturally I handed her my card. She told me to sit down, and about ten minutes later told me it had cleared. Sweet. I go through the exam, and afterward sign a little invoice that says (as far as I think it said through my dilated eyes) "$0.00, insurance covered." Well color me surprised when three weeks later I get an invoice in the mail for $185! $185?!? I've never had an eye exam that cost close to that! $185 and no lollipop, not cool guys. Haggling with the lady in billing didn't help either, so now I'm stuck paying the bill and filing a complaint with the Mass. AG's office and drinking my sorrows away with bourbon. So short story: Doctors are great, the billing department probably sells waffle-makers on TV on Sundays. Just sayin' read more

Be prepared to spend 2+ hours at your first appointment. That being said, the staff here are very knowledgeable and seemed to care more about my eyes than any of my doctors in the 15 years I've needed vision correction. I went into NEE for a new contact prescription. I'd been putting off getting an eye doctor in Boston for years, and my insurance covered this place. I had been experiencing periodic eye redness which I wrote off as allergies. After getting everything checked, twice, I was given a trial pair of contacts and a diagnosis: a very slight, almost undetectable sterile eye infection from not changing out my contact case. I still have no clue what this means, but had they not spent over two hours looking at each part of my eye, this would have EASILY gone undiagnosed and lead to eye problems down the road. I know some of the reviews on here dislike NEE because of the admittedly long appointments and required second appointment but I promise you no one will give you a low-cost eye exam like these people. read more

Wow, I'm honestly surprised with all the bum reviews. I found NE Eye to be pretty darn good! I was well over-due for an eye exam (ahem, I still have my Lisa Loeb frames in circulation) and since this is on my way home from work, I decided to give it a shot. Okay, that's not entirely true. So, the real reason why I scheduled a visit here: BU *just* added eye care coverage to our benefits, and I figured "Hey, no copay for an exam? sign me UP!". I didn't have any sort of expectations going in, since I'm a total wuss when it comes to my eyes, I was scared to read reviews about someone losing an eye or something like that, so I decided to go in blind instead (har har, no pun intended). My eye exam was excellent; very thorough, but didn't take forever. I also didn't have any students look at my peepers, so that may be why. The doc was able to spot a few irregularities, solve my mystery eye pain (I know, a prescription from the Stay-era will do that...but still...) and send me on my way in about 40 minutes. Perhaps the biggest surprise was cost of new glasses. I'm of the "avoid buying frames at your eye doc at all costs unless you want to drop a cool six-hundro" school of thought, but to my disbelief, the selection of frames was huge AND complete glasses were waaaay less than LensCrafters and still a little less than framesdirect.com. This may have something to do with my insurance, but still, way to go NEEI! If you're a BU employee, I would highly recommend checking this place out. I feel a little conflicted about New England Eye. My exam was perfectly fine. I have no problem with seeing optometry students; my friend actually goes to the New England College of Optometry (which is associated with NEE) and said that the students are often more thorough during the exam. The full exam, including dilation, lasted almost an hour, which isn't a problem for me but I understand that may be too long for others. Near the end of the appointment, the student brought in Dr. Chen and he double checked that the student had done the check-up correctly. Both Dr. Chen and the student were very pleasant. My check-up was covered by insurance so my co-pay was only $5. For the check-up alone, I'd give 5 stars. But I'm really not a fan of the store attached to it. The store itself is beautiful, has a very big selection of frames, and has some gimmicky technology to help you pick frames. But the opticians were pushy and made me a little uncomfortable. Instead of letting you browse, they follow you around (I know they're just trying to be helpful) and pick out frames to put into a tray. I think their system would work better if they let you try out more frames first, instead of putting the first couple of frames you try into the tray and expect you to pick one to purchase right away. One optician kept handing me only expensive frames to try (D&G, Gucci, Prada, etc. which were $300-$400!!) and was very keen on making me purchase one of them. When I told him about my lousy insurance plan, his attitude immediately turned sour. He put away all of the high-end frames and pointed me in the direction of the super cheap ones and then didn't speak to me for the rest of my browsing. In conclusion: I recommend NEE for check-ups if you don't mind waiting a little longer for a more thorough appointment. I don't recommend buying glasses through the store. read more

Zero star! Huge disappointment! Worst experience ever in quality and customer service. All good until I placed the order for a pair of glasses after doctor's examination. The quality of lenses was awful, super thick and bulky. The frame lasted for a month(broke easily). I regret every dollar I gave them. Be aware, after you pay, you can't find the billing dept on the phone and when you do, they typically "can't do anything about your case". My insurance was ready to pay them for the service I received 8 months later when I discovered I was covered by my employer for this pair of glasses, but they insisted "they can't submit any claim after the day of the order was placed", which is not true (I triple check this with many reps of my insurance).. In a few words, once they get paid they no longer try to help you,. I cry for this money. Mostly because I walked out of that place with a broken pair of glasses that costed $480... Bad service, bad quality.. read more

The director was kind enough to reach out to me and ask for more information and sent her condolences. For an organization to put so much care into one customer is amazing and isn't seen too often. After this interaction I would recommend this place. I would encourage all to ask questions and feel out your intern before engaging in any procedures and/or exams. Aheheh, they had a sign up that requested a Yelp review, so why not. Been going here since 2005 or so. Each time two student assistants show up promptly after checking in. Go through routine eye checking procedures without a hitch with them. They've all been very nice, pleasant people. This time around I didn't have insurance to cover the checkup, so when I saw the price: $145 I was made sad. But otherwise, no complaints at all. Also, there is plenty of parking on that street whenever I go, so don't worry about finding parking once you get there, despite the fact that it's in a busy part of Boston. read more

Though the student docs are slow, they are thorough, and likely to pick up on things that a 10 min visit to a Lenscrafters won't find. Their findings are then presented to the main Doc who then reexamines you. So be prepared for an exam with the works: entrance exam, refraction, anterior segment slit lamp, dilated fundus exam- they tried to do a photo of my retina but the machine would take an additional 15 minutes to warm up so we passed. But be warned, all this will take at least one hour (mine was almost 2...eep). Also, they have a nice selection of glasses. Picked up a pair of Guccis last year that I absolutely love. The opticians are very helpful. read more

Today I received a bill in the mail for over $100 for a visit on 5/14 that I never had. This is an unacceptable error and I will not be pursuing eye care here even if after it is resolved. read more

My experience here was great. I got an appointment in a week, reception was very nice and clear. My student doctor was very sweet and thorough. The appointment was slightly longer then my eye appointments normally take (it was a little over an hour) but I felt like they had looked at every inch of my eye. And when the full on doctor came in to do a double check she was also very nice and said the student did a great job. Also their selection of frames looks awesome! read more
