Dr. Van Teague, has been my optometrist since I was 14 years old! i'll do the math for you: that's 40 years! That should tell you something right there! He is the kindest, most pleasant eye doctor in the world! His entire staff is also very warm, friendly and helpful. The office is also very inviting and comfortable. from the receptionists to the opticians, everyone at this office is very professional and pleasant. They also have a decent number of eyeglass and sunglasses options to choose from. You can also choose any frames that are typically for eyeglasses and have them made into sunglasses and vice versa. The prices are also very competitive. Now back to Dr. Teague,... I cannot sing his praises enough because not only is he the best ophthalmologist in the world. He is also very pleasant kind and giving of his time... He has volunteered at The Community Care clinic, which is where I work for the past several years. read more

I love Dr. Teague and have been a patient since I started wearing glasses. But the practice as a whole has gotten kind of smarmy over the past few years, with high-pressure sales tactics and questionable billing. This year's exam was the final straw for me. In my pre-exam session, I was asked, as usual, about having the eye scan that costs $39 and isn't paid by insurance. I declined the scan. The person in charge of the session, who was training a new employee at the computer, tried to get me to have the scan because it had been 2 years since my last one. Again, I declined it. Then she said, "Well the dr wants everyone to get the scan for our records, but the charge is only for reading the scan." Fine, take the scan but I declined the reading. So tell me why I was charged for having the scan read?! I never saw that image and the dr never went over it with me. I saw the charge on my bill after I got home and called the office, but had to leave a message. They never called me back, so I went over there two weeks later. The manager had the nerve to tell me that my scan was read and the dr went over it with me. She didn't even have the decency to say this lie to my face, she told someone else to tell me. When I disputed their lie, they told me I have to call their billing company (even though I paid my bill in the doctor's office. I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt by assuming the trainee had made a mistake, but now it seems they just intend to rip people off. I have been a patient of Dr. Teague's for over 40 years and he has always been fantastic. However, recent experiences with the front staff and the general operations there have me and my family looking for another eye doctor. I was erroneously booked for 2 appointments on the same day a couple of weeks ago (with email and text confirmations). I didn't realize this until right before the first appointment and couldn't get anyone to answer the phone to confirm which was correct. I drove to the office on hold the entire drive of 10+ minutes only to find when I went inside that my later in the day appointment time was correct. None of the staff were on the phone when i arrived so I have no idea why no one could answer the phone. When I arrived for my later appointment, I waited over 45 minutes in the waiting area and was skipped by at least 4 other patients who came in behind me. All were taken back for their visits before me including at least one to see the same doctor I was waiting for. Then after my appointment, even though I informed staff I was in a hurry and wanted to simply pay and take my prescription elsewhere, I was forced to wait another 20 minutes before finally being checked out. In this time, someone came in of the street with an issue with her glasses and was helped by one of the check-out staff ahead of me. Another family member arrived last week for her scheduled appointment and was informed that the scheduling system cancelled her appointment and that she would have to schedule a new one. No one apologized and they refused to work her in at her scheduled time. read more

Dr. Dunn is awesome. but the staff upfront not so good. last year they tried to charge a co pay. this year no matter what lenses I get will have a copay.my Insurance covers $400.00 for frames. as well as lenses including bif and progressive. and yet I'm told I need to pay $33.00 I will go elsewhere for frames and lenses. read more

Dr. Teague and his assistant Tiffany are great. However, the front desk treats you like you are subhuman. Also, I began a journey to get a pair of custom contact lenses in June 2022. I finally received them in April 2023. There was a six month gap between attempts to get lenses that worked. The reason was no one passed on the request for the revised lenses. Also, my contacts were to correct an astigmatism following cataract surgery; the only time Medicare will cover any eye care - one pair of glasses or contacts. The claim was rejected. I spoke with Medicare, they researched the claim, and the claim was rejected because Eyecare Center submitted the claim without indicating it was for post cataract surgery. I must also confess I did not behave properly during my last visit and spouted some profanity in anger. For that, I apologize. However, as others have pointed out, this place is poorly managed and customers are treated like a nuisance (at the front desk). I'm transferring to another practice after 10+ years. I do not recommend the Eye Care Center in Winston-Salem because to anyone who is a Humana Eye med participant. My experience left a bad taste in my mouth and in my wallet. I was not informed that if I received a discount I would not receive the Humana Eyemed $300 vision allowance. I paid $446 out of pocket and $300 from my FSA thinking I would receive the $300 reimbursement from Eyemed. The Eye Care Center sales rep instructed me to submit the claim myself, which I did. I received a denial letter so I followed up and appealed the decision. After several phone calls during the past two days, I finally reached someone who informed me the "discount" from the Eye Care Center negated the $300 from this purchase, but that I still had $300 to use by 12-31! The sales rep offered to sell me a pair of "readers" for some existing frames for $299. What a crock!!! I have 2 new pairs of glasses and I don't need more by the end of the year. Therefore, I won't receive the $300 that is provided for my vision allowance this year. So if you go there and have Humana Eyemed, please ask questions about the "discount" This is a situation where the buyer really needs to be aware! Marilyn O read more

The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and cares about helping me choose the best glasses for my face and personal style. My appointments are normally on time and the doctor treats me with care. Confession: Ever since I was thirteen and got my first pair of glasses, I have disliked going to the eye doctor. I had a pretty traumatic experience with the doctor barking instructions at me and manhandling me (in front of my mom and my cousins, no less), going through endless eye exercises, waking up the next day with one pupil still dilated and finally the receptionist threatening to scream if my mom and I didn't leave in five minutes, when we went back to pick up my new glasses. So, yeah. Could you blame me for feeling that way about eye exams and visits to the eye doctor? Well, I'm happy to report that my experience today was dramatically different from all the others, and the polar opposite of my very first visit to an optometrist. The facility is quite beautiful, and the entire staff was very friendly and accomodating, including the doctor I saw today, Dr. Leslie Dunn. All of my questions were answered and Dr. Dunn was kind enough to take a look at my irises to check them for irregularities (she assured me there were none). Best of all, the entire appointment was nice and quick -- no multiple endless series of tests with five-minute breaks inbetween like that first experience (my other experiences with different doctors, of course, haven't quite been like that, either, but they were otherwise meh and forgettable, with me wishing it would be over). I am sooooooo happy my eyecarecenter appointment today was easy-breezy and pleasant! I hope all my future appointments are just as nice. read more

Upon first impressions I loved the place. While picking out my glasses they had EOB on hand telling me exactly what my insurance provider would cover. I paid half the price when I ordered the glasses and the other half after picking them up. After ordering glasses and picking them up and being told I have a 0 balance, one month later I received a bill for $40. I called the "Billing Support Hotline", and I use this phrase loosely, to be told what I had to pay was the exact amount that I had already paid. I spoke to a representative and when she couldn't help me, I asked to speak to her supervisor. While speaking to him we asked for a line by line description of everything we had to pay. While sitting in front of our spreadsheet adding it all up, the number didn't match still, if anything the company now owed us $10. The "supervisor" told us to call the insurance company and talk to them, even though it is the eyecare centers numbers that weren't adding up. When my husband tried asking him another question, he couldn't even speak it without being interrupted and yelled at by the "supervisor". When my husband asked to speak to his supervisor, he was told he is the supervisor and he isn't going to take the disrespect, when in fact it was he who was disrespecting my husband. This place has no clue what they are doing and will try and pull a fast one on you to try and get more and more money out of you. We have already paid them well over $400 for 2 sets of glasses and even after being told we have a $0 balance, we some how still owe them $40. $40 that they can't even account for. Now after being on a call for 43 minutes we are on hold for a different supervisor. Do not use this company who only wants to syphon more and more money out of you. read more

I have been with the eyecare center for many years now and recently left after repeated unprofessional and frustrating experiences. The first example is that when I showed up for my annual appointment, they told me it was given to someone else because I have not confirmed via text that I was coming. I have never missed an appointment, and they acknowledged that. When I asked to see the office manager, I was told she was out of town for several weeks and to call back--I asked if they would leave a message for her to contact me, and they stated they would try. I have never received a call or email from the office since that time. In addition, they sent my daughter's records to collections for $25 not paid for a retinal exam. I did okay this exam and agreed to pay it. When I checked out, they told me there was no balance due. They did not contact me about this later even though I called back and asked specifically about it. Sadly, the list continues... read more

They tried to bill my Medicare provider knowing I was covered under my wife's insurance. I told them that a standard eye exam is not covered by Medicare and the office billed them anyway. Claim of course deinied.My wife had numerous conversations with them and thought it was straightened out. 6 months later I get a bill from them long after the timeframe for any appeals with my wife's insurance were over. Its as if they knew what they were doing by waiting and then throwing the entire unsubstantiated bill at me. Never go there, they will screw you. read more

Eye Care Center treats you like you need them, not they need you. Customer service is non-existent. Lost a 20+ year customer and they could care less. Called to make an appointment and was disconnected after a 5 minute hold time. Called back and was told I would have to wait 2 months for an appointment. Fine. However, I have no contact lenses and therefore am left effectively without vision. Asked if I could purchase a pair of contacts to hold me over until my appointment but was declined based on their "policies" and that my prescription had expired. I've had the same prescription for five years! Let her know I wouldn't be able to see without contact lenses but this didn't change anything. Let her know I was a 20+ year customer and this didn't change anything. All I wanted was for her to make an effort to escalate and resolve my issue but she did not care. Calmly, I explained based on the service I received, that I would like to cancel my appointment and my relationship with Eye Care Center. She said "Ok, I'll make a note of it". The end. No apologies or efforts were made to satisfy their customer. Picked up the phone and called another optometrist in the area. The phone was answered immediately and an appointment was made next week. I needed a copy of me contact prescription, so I thought I'd call the office. The Peters Creek location won't pick up the phone or call you back when you leave a voice message, and doesn't respond to emails. I had to call the Strafford location to get them to pick up and route me to the Peters Creek location and the phone just rang for 10 minutes. I filed out the form online to get them to send it to me as well (three times) and never got it. Looks like I'm going to have to show up in person to get them to email me my prescription. read more

My husband and I have been patients here for years and have been satisfied. I am puzzled though about the lack of training for front desk personnel. They don't answer by identifying themselves like "Eye Care Center", they just say "Hello", which leads me to think I reached the wrong number. I then have to ask if it is the Eye Care Center. Also, their name doesn't show up on Caller ID when they call me, so I think it is an annoying telemarketing call and don't answer. Used eyecare for nearly a decade. Optometrists are very good but the eye glass center has gone down hill. Not only has selection become very limited (nothing fashionable) but the material they use for lenses are subpar. I went from using crizel lenses with a 2 year warranty to lenses make by their corporation with a 90 day warranty...same is true for frames. And the progressive lenses are no longer top grade so they have a very small tunnel. And you only find this out after the fact - when you get your glasses and realize how bad they are and that you get a terrible headache wearing them. Very sly shift in marketing. read more

They lied to me. Went there in Feb 2017. Asked them how much an annual eye exam cost, since I am on Medicare. They said not a dime. Lets Rewind, I asked the same question, when I made the appointment. As a matter of fact, went there next day with my Medicare card to confirm it. Their reply: nothing!! Received a bill for 79.00 just the other day. BUNCH of LIARS. Now I can't get anyone on the phone for an explanation. read more

II didn't want to give such a poor review because Dr.Jordan had been wonderful and I have been going her for years, but the way I have been treated this last visit was offensive. I took my daughter to have her eyes checked and everything went fine as usual we decided to purchase glasses with then for the first time. In total we had 4 pair. When we finally got them mine were wrong. Over a period of 2 months with sending the glasses back and taking 5 trips up there they finally set an appointment with Dr.Lee who found there was indeed a problem and also told me that as far as my sunglasses go I'll get used to them. The glasses were wrong and distorted my vision. So he basically told me I'll get used to not seeing on to of being completely rude. A few days later my daughter told me her glasses were wrong too because I noticed she wouldn't even wear her sunglasses. So I went to get my money back and asked to talk to the manager. He ran out the door and has never called me. It's been over a month and I cannot return to a place that will employ a doctor who will just tell you that you will get used to not being able to see.
