I strongly recommend avoiding this company for their lack of safety and their incredibly long appointment scheduling times We hired them to fix a broken turn on valve on a gas insert log set. In totality this took more then 3 months and did not result in a new valve that worked. And it required 4 different service appts just for that dissatisfying outcome. We finally chose a different and high quality company who was able to replace the whole insert including service and install in less than 3 weeks from when we decided on the fireplace. While disappointed in the outcome, the event that actually compels to write this review is what happened at the last appt with Kevin JR. After "fixing" the valve for the fourth time, the installer Kevin JR left a roaring fire in the fireplace with the DAMPER in the CLOSED position and left the house. After sitting in the room for less than a minute we noticed the fume smell was strong and not dissipating. At that point I turned off the fire and checked the DAMPER and it was fully CLOSED. This situation would quickly have led to carbon monoxide toxicity and other unpleasant side effects. A HUGE safety issue. At that point I made the decision not to do any further business or ever invite them back for any service. Ever. While there was already a long and complicated set of fixes and refixes by Kevin JR that led to this point, this single event crystallized the fact that safety is NOT their number one concern. If the fireplace installer does not even bother to check if the damper is open before testing his own work, what else didn't he check? I strongly urge you not to do business with this company to protect your safety. read more

Well they were, and completed the repair in under two hours! I have debated writing this review for quite some time now but the frustration and work that's resulted from the install by F &S has been non stop and continued for months now. This install was done over 6 months ago and we are still dealing with the aftermath of the mess it created for us. While it appears these guys have done good work for plenty of clients, our experience was vastly different, unfortunately, not to mention we were left with a huge fire hazard in our wall that could have burned our home down. Our initial meeting with Kevin was great and we felt he was the guy for the job - it seemed like a straight forward install for our Napoleon free standing fireplace with direct vent out of the wall. We had all of the parts and so we thought it would be quick and for the most part, easy ...as easy as it could be, I suppose. I'll preface this with saying we had a pellet stove in the area where the fireplace was being installed so the vent would be positioned above the pellet stove vent and we would be left with an opening that we would have to deal with, no problem and that's fair. Kevin let us know to get a hearth pad to put under the unit as the tile area we had earlier wouldn't cover it perfectly, also not a problem. The scheduling and communication were all easy and straightforward. Upon arrival things appeared to being going well until some power went out. When cutting into the stucco of the house from the outside, electrical wires were cut into and impacted our power there was clearly some frustration, which I can understand. This event led to what we are still dealing with today, sadly. The wires that were cut into could have been avoided if the cut wasn't done so deep upon the initial go, but what's done is done. We were told the wires should not have been there, but they were, so I can't do anything about that. I get that these guys are on a schedule and they maybe don't have time to do things carefully but it is what it is. Kevin was clearly frustrated and was upset that he had to now "deal with electrical". The fix is what really shocked us though, using electrical tape and what we believe to be a lamp cord they found in their truck (see photos), the cords were left taped up, not in a junction box, in the wall. My husband and I both asked multiple times about this and were assured this was OK. Knowing better, we know this is against code. If we were to have plugged anything into an outlet and a fire were to have started in the wall, which it would have, our whole house could have gone up in flames. It's sad to think anyone would do this and walk away feeling comfortable with it. I am certain that Kevin would not let anyone do this at his home. We were left with parts of the wall cut out and told we would need to patch it up. While he was on site, Kevin told us he was going to Home Depot to get materials, but he didn't go. I think he maybe thought leaving the wires as he did in the wall would be "good enough", you can see the fix in the photos. I e-mailed F&S afterwards saying I would like to have an electrician come out to look at this before we patched up our wall, to which Kevin quickly replied that he did the best he could and to please use his electrician who would cover the repair and they would take care of the cost. I called his electrician who knew nothing about the issue, so getting him to come out took a while, but he did take care of it. Now, we were left with a couple more holes in our wall as J boxes needed to be installed for the hack electrical job to be done correctly. Since then, we have had to completely remove the fireplace in order to patch up the wall. So the install we paid for as been un-done. Upon doing so, we found that the piece that was affixed to the outside of the house wasn't screwed into anything. The screws were physically put into the unit but when we opened up the wall, they had not penetrated into any surface. The work that was done was extremely half assed and what I assume to be a result of the mess up from the electrical. All of this can be understood with some communication. I am happy to oblige with honesty and transparency, but not with someone who leaves a fire hazard and takes my money while making me feel that they did a stand up job. The aftermath of the work that was done has left us with a mess and not to mention, added cost. I am now waiting on a tape and mud guy and have to repaint my whole wall so the color blends. I would have greatly appreciated if Kevin either put the job on hold until he could do it properly, or got the right people in here to fix what was done wrong. Knowing we paid for this install, had to remove it all, and essentially are re-doing it ourselves, is really unfortunate. I know things happen, and I don't doubt these guys can do great work, but our experience was beyond negative. I would just suggest that if something does go wrong during your install, check out the work being done to button it up. read more

When my gas fireplace stopped working I contacted several companies in the South Bay Area. F&S was by far the most responsive. When I called, there was a very clear, detailed message about how to make an inquiry, as the technicians don't answer the phone when they are in people's homes. As promised in the message, Kevin called me back later that afternoon to hear about the issue with my fireplace. I was able to schedule an appointment for the following week and Kevin showed up right on time. The fee was very fair and reasonable and included diagnosing and fixing my fireplace (without needing to order parts) as well as some basic maintenance. Sadly, I didn't call F&S first - and I sure wish I did. My first call was to Penguin Fireplace - big mistake. Back to F&S...I called them after Penguin dropped the ball. Kevin, one of the owners, reached out immediately, and got me on the calendar for a few days later. His communication was clear, friendly and professional - whether on the phone, email or text. He was here at the house for maybe 30 mins and got my old gas fireplace up and running with no replacement parts needed.
