Last summer I was looking to purchase a pellet stove insert. Realized that most of the stuff I was looking at had some creative math when estimating their output and coverage areas.... So I called a "Pro". The phone conversation was pretty straight forward. I explained what I was trying to do and where my questions where on which Manufacturer and model were right for my house. The person I spoke to on the phone said that they needed to come and perform a chimney inspection and the professional who performed that work would take measurements and provide some options that would work. My chimney was inspected and cleaned at the time I purchased the house. No fires had been lit, and outside of a few factors that might impact the integrity of the chimney, I new it was in good shape. I was told the cost of this inspection would be credited towards the purchase of a unit if I worked with them. So at the time it did not feel like a waste of money..clever! After the 15-20ish minutes of inspection the 2 folks who were onsite handed me a completed inspection form that reaffirmed what I already knew, but when asked about specific units that this company might recommend, I was told to go online and look at some units. This put me right back at square 1 and lightened my wallet by 250 bucks. I shared my feedback over text with the office and Rick was fairly obtuse through this conversation. I can spend hours reading cut sheets on products and still not take away which brands are the most serviceable, which have the strong reliability history, which ones have hard to get parts etc.... the stuff that causes unnecessary headache for home owners. All this information might be out there on the interwebs, but I wasn't interested in looking and was willing to pay the 250 bucks to get those questions answered (the cleaning was not needed) by an industry professional.. and they were not. read more

We messaged with this company on Yelp, sent some photos and got a quote that had one of two prices depending on what was found. The gentlemen arrived to to the inspection on time and with proper Covid gear (much appreciated). They completed the inspection and needed to come back for a fix on the top of the chimney. They came back for the second visit and were both super nice and right on schedule. Once the work was completed they showed me some before and after photos (great since I wasn't going to go up there!). Overall this experience was affordable, efficient and friendly! I had an issue with my gas fireplace where the flame would go out but then come back on and kept repeating the off and on process. I reached out to several local companies courtesy of Yelp! One place wanted over $500 to do an inspection/diagnostic (Nope!) Another place didn't have any available appointments for about 2 months (Pass). McDonalds was quick to respond to my quote request, friendly on the phone, reasonable cost and I was able to get an appointment in about a week and a half (done!). I had asked if they can call the day before as a reminder and although it doesn't sound like that is standard practice she obliged and cheerfully followed through. The technician called that day to tell me he was running ahead of schedule and asked if he could come early (absolutely!) The technician arrived as stated, was professional and polite. Have a description of the issue, he checked it out and got to work. Within a couple moments he found what the issue was and got to work fixing it. I had a couple questions on the fireplace (we just moved in) and he was very knowledgeable, took the time to research my questions and was able to answer them. After being referred to McDonald Chimney Service by a fireplace repair company that doesn't do this type of work, we were able to set up a time to get it fixed. I have to echo everything the other 5 star reviews shared. Rick and his son, Tim, are the team to call when you have a chimney, fireplace, air duct, or dryer vent issue. Not only are their friendly and trustworthy, but they were punctual, professional, thorough, and knowledgeable. We had an issue with our gas fireplaces (2 not turning on and 1 whose fan seemed to be stuck on too long) and prepared ourselves for expensive repairs. Rick and Tim inspected the fireplaces and it turns out that nothing needed to be repaired. My husband and I were a little sheepish--Rick made it look so easy when he reset the system and then the fireplaces lit! He could have easily told us that we needed to replace the igniter or the fan component (two things we thought were the issue when trying to google the issue). Instead, he charged us an incredibly reasonable inspection fee for making the hour-long drive out from Modesto to our place in the Don Pedro area. A few other places we tried calling refused to drive out this far. While they were inspecting, I noticed their company t-shirts mentioned air duct cleaning and dryer vent cleaning. Given how impressed we are with how thorough and honest they are, we asked if they could do the other two services, too. Rick checked out our intake vent to see if the ducts needed cleaning (rather than just saying yes, absolutely!) and showed us how they were dusty right near the opening. He explained it would be even worse the deeper you went in. He was very factual and informative, without being pushy or trying to scare us into doing it. I appreciated that very much. They cleaned out our dryer vent on this same visit but didn't bring the equipment for the air duct cleaning so we'll schedule that visit in March or April (after the winter chimney/fireplace rush season ends). Called to schedule an appointment, and was told Saturdays are generally install days , but they would fit me in. I received a call an hour before my appointment to let me know they'd be 20 minutes late. (Was pleasantly surprised, as every other company I've waited for just showed up late without notice) They arrived at exactly 10:20 and immediately got to work. Tim, I believe, and his partner were extremely kind and professional! Been using McDonalds for a couple years for routine maintenance on our pellet stove. In 2021 they came out and cleaned fireplace and pellet stove and i asked if they could replace my ignitor for stove. Gentlemen took the part number down and called me and said we can order part and come install. I decided to wait until this yr to replace since Winter was over. So this year I decided to have them come out on a Saturday to replace ignitor and clean fireplace. I called in September and was informed no Saturday appt's available for now. So now its mid October and I still could not get Saturday appt so I decide to have my wife take some time off work so they could come out during week. They come out beginning of November to replace and charge us $200 to clean fireplace and gentlemen wasnt able to replace ignitor as he said its not right part. So i call and ask whats up, office says "i have researched and found out how to replace this part, and will have him out next week". Wife takes some more time off to get this done, he comes out again and STILL cant replace part. So, now im getting frustrated and office says well nothing we can do, EXCEPT i can order part MYSELF for THREE TIMES as much money as originally quoted, and they will come out and install. I found this to be very strange BUT, i wanted this replaced. SO they send me a pic of part and tell me where to get it. I called them to arrange an appt and they wanted to charge me again for another service visit, and i was like WHAT! I informed them this is not my mistake and my wife took two half days off work, so now this ignitor is seriously costing me money. Office says "i will talk to owner and see what we can do", im like ok! Now fast forward to December and NOTHING! Seriously disappointed ! read more

Very impressed with Rick's service from the very first phone call. This is my first experience with chimneys and he made it very straight forward and easy. Felt it was reasonably priced but also have a lot of helpful info while he was here for us to do easy repairs on our own instead of finding more work for himself. Did a quick check on other fireplaces and examined why they didn't need to be cleaned. We'll worth the money and time and now feel safe burning fires this winter. He will come back in spring for a free additional inspection to make sure nothing was damaged over winter and keep checking until next cleaning is needed.
