As much as I like this store, I have one serious gripe: their hours. They are basically closed all weekend (only open Saturday morning), and they close at 5:30 every weekday, making it nearly impossible for a 9-5er to shop at their store. Every brewer I know complains about having to rush to get to Steinbart's on time. And Homebrew Exchange has stolen easily 75% of my business by being open late and on weekends, even though I live far closer to Steinbart's. Given that this is a homebrew supply store - and basically only services a hobby for grown-ups, they should be open until 7 and on weekends. read more

Brewing for 5 years before stumbling upon this place. Absolutely great costumer service and the easiest place to create your own recipes without having to dictate to someone what you want. I've been brewing for a little over 2 years now and this is the place I went to set up my first system. I think their stuff is a little bit on the higher price side of things but I still think it was worth it. Especially for a new homebrewer, they offered a lot of good information and a lot of helpful tips in setting things up and things to consider. I did a lot of reading and planning but they still had some solid input. I also think they do a really good job of keeping a good stock of just about anything you could expect a homebrew shop. For me, what keeps it from being 5 stars is that there generally is a bit of a line and every so often I do get someone who is a little bit on the abrasive side but when they are not busy (yes, some of you may have to wait) they are generally quite helpful. read more

Super nice and helpful guys here! They have everything for brewing or fermenting (beer, wine, sake, Kombucha, cheese...). I needed to fill up a CO2 canister for a keg before a camping trip, and this is the only place I found that lets you keep your original canister! FH is the best homebrew supply store in portland, but unfortunately, that's not the high accolades it seems to be. I can't figure out why, in a town FULL of DIY fanatics, the best homebrew shop is so under-supplied & I'm guessing understaffed. Seriously, they're only open for 4 hours during the whole weekend? That could be why it's packed at 9am on a saturday, though. The I have been in several times in the last 5 months and have never been left to wander the aisles searching for something; the staff is friendly and helpful, and they have lots of good equipment for sale. Sadly, the grain room is cramped if there's more than 3 people shopping, and they are frequently out of yeast and hop strains. Also, some brews on tap to taste whilst shopping wouldn't go amiss, either. I also miss Homer, Kel & that crew in Berkeley. read more

This place rocks for homebrew supplies. Big selection basic supplies, plus some harder to find stuff that the other shops don't usually carry. I'm a novice brewer/winemaker and the staff has been great in pointing the way with classes, recipes, and general advice. My only complaint is the crappy weekend hours (closed saturday afternoon and sunday), so you gotta plan ahead. read more

The place to go for homebrewing supplies and equipment in Portland. They have a massive selection of grains, hops, and yeast at good prices. Domestic 2 row is $1 a pound, for example. You can mill it yourself here as well. Comparable to online shopping for ingredients for your next batch of homebrewed beer in both price and selection. They also offer wine and sake making ingredients, and equipment for making beer, wine, or sake, as well as all the draft/kegging equipment you could ask for. Lots of books on brewing and wine making too. They've been around forever, for good reason. They are the best in price, selection, and service. The staff can help you with anything, and will make even a novice brewer feel comfortable and answer any question you can come up with. All nice folks working here, and you can tell that they enjoy home brewing. Their hours are good during the week (8:30-5:30), but note that they're only open 9:00-1:00 on Saturdays. That works for most, but might impair some folks brewing on weekends. Still, the best place for supplies and brewing expertise. read more

This place is a home-brewing Mecca. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, and very willing to help you figure out how to brew your beer correctly. They have a great selection of grains, hops, and yeast in stock and the shelves are filled with everything from the basic essentials to gadgets for the advanced brewer to glassware to mini wood casks. I don't think they let you brew on premises like at "Let's Brew", but that's ok - I don't really have a need for that. read more

I really like these guys. They have a great selection and all of the staff are genuinely nice people that always seem to be in a good mood. Of course it seems like a dream job in many ways, but I have had more experiences with them taking their time to knowledge share and help me figure out a deviation to a batch, that it is more than just a good job to them. While I found the shop had all the equipment I coud think of, what makes this a truly great experience is the helpfulness and knowledge of the staff, all of whom seem to be enthusiastic and active brewers. This place has almost everything that I've ever needed for brewing beer, making cider, mead, vinegar, and soon wine. This is saying something considering that I'm an all-grain brewer who brews about 200 gal per year, currently have 10 fermenters going. Now that they have expanded their hours to include Sunday you never have to wait if the brewing urge hits. The draft shop is a big plus here for those of us who keg our creations. The staff @ Steinbarts are like a living brew wikipedia, if you have brewing questions they have answers. The grain mills are free for customer use and a money saver. The staff is super friendly and helpful, their passion for the art of brewing is obvious. Steinbarts makes their shop available to the Oregon Brew Crew for club meetings as well as hosting learn to brew events to build the local home brew community. Went in knowing nothing about installing a tower and the items I may need. I guess that's where I went wrong as I got no help from the employee. He simply put everything on counter, didn't price compare items, didn't show me items, didn't seem to have time for me, seemed annoyed at any question I had.
