Better selection than their other location. Plus you can smoke while browsing. No one under 18 is allowed though

The room alone almost made it worth my time. The English pea risotto was very good, and the house fries were good. The French-oaked flight I requested was a sad effort. The bartender never asked what distillers I had as options other than indicating that Makers 46 must be what I'm after when I said French oaked and creamy was my vibe, to which I raised an eyebrow and indicated I was ok if he started with that in my flight as a base for comparison. Otherwise he never asked whether I'd like to spend good money on something special (I would have said yes) and later claimed these were the only French-oaked bottles they even had in stock despite a claimed inventory of over 2,000 whiskeys. What arrived: Penelope Architect--nothing at all on the nose, something like wood paneling on the palate. Angel's Envy Triple Oak--tasted just like the Angel's Envy Rum Cask I can get at the supermarket. Maker's 46--the best of those three, yet still quintessentially basic as a wheated French-staved bargain buy, which, by the way, I never indicated I was there for. When I diplomatically indicated my that my flight was totally blasé and asked for one last pour in hopes of redeeming the experience, he brought me a redundant Maker's Heart Series in which the heart was made of mildly chocolate-inspired disappointment. Staff clearly put effort into educating and serving, and the environment is special enough that I hope to return with friends for that alone, even though I was rushed out due to a scheduled reservation needing my unscheduled seat. Ultimately the pours left me with an extremely unimpressive result and a future 0-for-2 that I'd be willing to risk in hopes of their redemption. Exceptionally impressive venue, if totally unimpressive flight curation.

The vibe was fun and welcoming, and it felt like a great place to hang out with friends. The spicy margaritas were definitely a highlight--$12 and really good, though they may have been a daily special. Either way, they were worth it. I always want to come in, look at the lovely downtown pub…read more(I don't bother with 21st Street), and say "you know what, it's about on par with anything I've seen in Boston, Hoboken, New York, Philly, Baltimore, or Chicago." I want to say it's on par with the better Northwest offerings like the Irish Heather in Vancouver, The Irish Times in Victoria, or Murphy's in Seattle. But I can't. Because every time I'm here I'm just reminded of all the things it isn't. The menu looks somewhat right on paper, but it's little things like the spice and bake on the sausage rolls, the fact that they won't give you curry and chips without ordering the whole chicken entree ordeal, the somewhat dry and mealy burger. Then there are the drinks: There's a Guinness on, but the Magners is in the bottle. And then there's the whole brewpub element that was introduced a few years ago that baffles me. There are so many breweries in town, and so many quality Irish breweries, that I have no idea why you'd brew a middling beer lineup of your own AND make an Irish stout and red, of all things. But the most disappointing part of The Kells is that it's all the worst parts of the pubs in cities I just mentioned without containing any of their finer points. Stripped of history, taplist, menu, and other comforts, it's just a place where suburbanites come into the city, get loud for a few hours, pay their few quid, and leave without doing much else in the area. Compared to the Leaky Roof, T.C. O'Leary's or the city's English pubs like the Rose and Thistle or Moon and Sixpence, The Kells seems detatched and at arm's length from anything. that might resemble a community. I've heard they've done (double-decker English) buses to Timbers and Thorns matches, and I hear they're basically propping up the city's St. Patrick's Day festivities, but there's something artificial to it. It's a shame. I know the founders came from Belfast and I know the family is still very much involved, but although the staff is always pleasant when I come in, there's very little about the place that makes me want to return. It doesn't repel me, but a pub should draw me in more than this one does.

Walking through those double glass doors, you can see the crazy inventory and supply of cigars they carry and wouldn't doubt if there's more in the back. It's a pretty wide and open space and there's some seating to smoke a cigar inside if you so desire. I went in needing to find some maduros for my dad as a gift and we were able to find a few at different price points so I could makeshift my own tasting box. The staff here is pretty straightforward and to the point which is nice. I had gotten some advice on cigars priced around $10 a piece, $25 a piece, and $45 a piece. Grabbed a few at each price point and knew that this gift would be a super solid one for my dad. After I inquired about the duration for transporting them on a flight, they came to the rescue with a mobile humidor packet to keep them in tip top shape. My time here had me feeling like I was back at my great grandpa's with all the tchotchkes one could possess. Towards the entrance was a large pile of cigar boxes that their inventory came in and they sell them as storage or gift boxes. Every box came from different makers and consisted of wood, tin, and everything in-between. With the help of a friend, she was able to help me find a Rocky Patel Box that was perfect. All in all - this is one spot worth checking out for sure!!

We got back in to town right at the peak of the parade and lights celebration Saturday. To say it was chaotic would be an understatement. Since roads were closed, the road to my hotel was of course blocked off. So during the first go around we couldn't get to where we needed to be and went instead on a one mile circle which then led is to an area where the guy blocking the road was nice enough to let us through after we told him my hotel was where he was. What a blessing that was indeed because we found a parking spot right across from my hotel. My friend had an hour to kill before she could check in to her hotel since the road was still closed on that side. We lucked out finding two seats right at the bar as soon as you walk in. It was first come first serve and they were busy. Lots of people were trickling in from the festivities to have a drink or two. I got the cucumber cocktail. It was so good I made my friend have a sip. As what usually happens, we ended up making friends with the two ladies next to us who were parade participants representing mardi gras. The hour breezed by so quickly. It was such a fun time I completely forgot to take photos. Hotel guests get 15% off their tab.

It's still in its construction phase, but there's something enticing about watching a place come into its own. Stepping through the door drops you right into the humidor--a warm, fragrant embrace. We lingered there for a few minutes before anyone appeared, and just when I wondered if we'd slipped in unnoticed, a speakeasy-style door swung open. I have to admit... the mystery of that was a little thrilling. The host greeted us with easy charm, talked cigars with my husband before inviting us to explore the lounge upstairs. The room had rows of deep chairs, TVs playing and gentlemen chatting. BYOB is always a plus--it's nice to have something smooth to sip while he enjoys his cigar. They were having an event that evening, pizza waiting outside the door. Boxes open and the pizza was cold. Unfortunately not appetizing, but that's not why you come to a cigar bar. My reason for giving three stars is the winter ventilation. With the windows closed, the smoke lingers a bit too intimately. I love joining my husband at cigar lounges, but I prefer not to walk out wearing the scent like a second skin. Still, there's something intriguing about this place--the potential. I'm curious to see how it all comes together.

Parking was difficult as it was all street parking and we were unable to find any spots that felt safe within a few blocks so we parked in a parking garage and walked a few blocks. The bar is cute and tiny with energetic music playing and friendly bartenders. It is a bit hard to carry a conversation here so you really have to be in close quarters with the other person. The drink menu has many awesome rum drink choices and they do have a 4-7 pm weekday happy hour. Drink prices are on par with other bars that serve cocktails and on average about $15. They have food and snacks, which I did not get but looked like a decent option. They also have a small outside seating area. It was a great vibe and I notice a wide age group there. I asked the bartender how long they've been around and they said 15 years. I can't believe I haven't been here before. That do charge a 3% credit card fee so cash is king.
