Yes, this place does have a lot of fabrics but you need to be aware of their return policy. Usually, I go to Joann fabrics where they offer 40% to 50% coupons. Since I was on this side of town, I came here in search of a simple black lace fabric with nice trim but all they had was the fancy one at $30 per yard. Inexperienced with sewing and little knowledge on fabric measurements, I asked for help from one of the sales ladies there. I showed her a picture of what I wanted and she recommended a 1/2 yard and with the seams make it 5/8 yard according to my height. When I arrived at my seamstress, she said with the style I wanted in the picture, I need a yard. So, I called back to Fabric R Us to tell them that their recommendation was incorrect and if I can come back to exchange for one yard. They refused. First, the sales lady blamed me for asking for 1/2 yard (which she recommended). After her, the owner got on the phone & told me that it's been cut so they can't sell to anyone even after I explained to her that her employee who recommended the wrong length. Then, I informed her that at Joann fabrics, you can return any fabric as long as it's never been cut. The owner disagreed and said that it's impossible - nobody refund fabric. So, I told her to check out Joann fabrics if she don't believe me. She responded that she won't go anywhere as it is not true. How can you not know your competitor's price & offerings? If you go Fabrics R Us, I recommend you know what you want because these ladies will not exchange or let you do returns. I stop going to them and go to Joann's using their 40% off coupons. read more

I love this fabric store, great prices and huge selections but ... the lady owner is still horrible!! I bought 3 yards of satin fabric last week, paid fully in cash and as I started to walk out, she started yelling at me and with a real bad attitude. She acted like I was shoplifting!! It turned out that an employee miscalculated my purchase and I owed her $1.00. I promptly paid her another buck!! Yes, a buck and it was their mistake, not mine!! I felt so humiliated because everyone was thinking that I was shoplifting. Whenever I go here to buy the stuff I need, I'd clench my teeth and pray that she won't be sitting behind the counter!! You can find the largest selection of fabrics at this store! I'm sure they have literally all kinds of fabric here. JoAnn's and other fabric stores cannot compare! There's a lot of pretty fabric for ao dai too. I bought felt here, and it's like 2.50/yard. Employees won't come up to greet you and ask what you'd like, because they're so busy running around. You kinda have to flag them down to ask for the price of the fabric. There might be a language barrier, so you have to be patient. However, I witnessed an instance when the owner yelled at one of the employees (in Vietnamese) while customers were present and I could tell she felt humiliated. I don't respect that... read more

I love this place. You have to come here with a good spirit and intentions. It may seem that you are delving into a pile of fabric, but as they say: one's man trash is another man's treasure. This may seem like trash, but whatever you are looking for--the treasure is to be found. I've used this place for Halloween costumes and executed some fine, slutty outfit (2007 - "Little Red I'll Ride in Your Hood") capable of the holiday. And the fabric is priced well, that in my example--the price of that with the seamstress work equaled a normal costume in retail. The place is Asian, so you can expect some spotty service. But this is not to say that the old ladies aren't cool and not willing to help you out if you can ask them the right way. I'm shooting myself in the foot for never having written a review for this place yet despite the fact that I have been her umpteen (hey, it has to be a word because spell check did not correct me) times. I have been to Fabrics R us for many projects: School play costumes, blankets, pillow cases, scarves, Halloween costumes, you name it, I've made it and, although there are other fabric stores out there, none, in my opinion, are comparable with regard to selection, quality and price! My girl friends and I have spent hours here buying fabric we've needed and we've even bought fabric we didn't need at the time yet felt compelled to buy that soft, furry wonder, that one-of-a-kind must have bolt all to myself or that silky, slinky thang.. all in the hopes and dreams of having our only sewing friend make us something we envision in our heads or have seen in a magazine! I have just left with some fabric for.... flags. Yup, I got a last minute text from the teenager asking (telling) ugh (begging) me to make two flags, one 6' and the other a mere 3', 'please and thank you!' They had everything I needed without me even knowing what it was I needed. I just shook my head and mumbled, showed them some text pics and off we were through the isles of fabric, plucking everything I needed to make wonderful flags. Fabrics R Us...a Mecca of everything you could wish for from fabrics to embellishments to everything in between. Yes, it's a hot disorganized mess. And yes, you need to be patient while waiting for one of the workers to cut your fabrics or answer your questions for you. But it's wonderfully inexpensive...especially if I bust out the mother tongue to finagle some prices down. Heck, I have no shame, that's how this baller stays on a budget!! Fabrics R Us is also slowly taking over this corner strip mall--now reaching over 4 different shops in one center!!! I am only giving this place 3 instead of 5 stars only because the service was terrible. The ladies that work here are very rude. One of the ladies yelled at me for asking a question to another of the ladies. They were speaking in another language and clearly talking about me pointing and laughing. On the other side they had an amazing assortment of fabrics. I found exactly what I was looking for no thanks to the workers. The prices were pretty reasonable as well. This place is awesome! If you're more of a cutesy crafter/quilter type, it definitely isn't for you, and you won't find sterile rows of calico prints of bunnies and kittens. This is for those who want to buy gorgeous reams of deep red silk to make floor length curtains, golden damask to cover an antique ottoman, or beautifully embroidered sheer material for a tablecloth overlay. The possibilities are endless, and everything is cheap, cheap, cheap! And they have an immense assortment of tassles, boas, fringe, trim, elastic, sequins, rhinestones, etc. Be prepared to dig around, but it is well worth it. Yes the staff may seem aloof or even a little rude, but there is a language barrier, so the ladies aren't going to be chattin' it up with you about seam allowances and the best elastic to use for your 4 year old's jumper. They are perfectly friendly, though. I always get a smile and a hello and they always help me in a timely manner. And I'm someone that buys 1/2 yd of 10 different fabrics all over the store. They don't seem to mind at all! I agree with a previous poster that a smile and a kind demeanor can go a long way when you don't speak the same language. This fabric store has everything and although there is a slight language barrier, it's not enough that you can't make polite conversation or feel uncomfortable and get 4.5 yards of bright gold fabric, 6 yards of toole and 13.5 yards of cheap black fabric! Bring CASH because they give you a 20% discount if you pay in cash and boy was I thrilled when my $57 worth of fabric, came to $45!! HURRAY!!! The store is full of everything, so it can be overwhelming, but if you have a general idea of what you are looking for, you can give Anh (one of the nice Vietnamese sales associates) a generic description like "cheap- black-fabric-I-can-dance-in" and she'll walk you through different options, fabrics and price ranges, even if you go on a busy Saturday. If you're serious about fabric, you're going to be hard pressed to find a store like this outside of the LA garment district. Amazing selection of fashion fabrics, from wool and silk, to glitzy sequined lace. The sister store caries a lot of duplicates as the main store, but also stocks an extensive home dec fabric selection. The shop ladies are brisk, sure, and there's sometimes a language/culture barrier to work around, but the selection and prices far outweigh the cons. So, if you need hand holding or are just looking for quilting fabric, this store is not for you. If, on the other hand, you want fabulous fabrics and can deal with a grumpy sales lady or two in order to get it, you're going to love it here. read more

I love this place! I can't believe I haven't written a review for them yet. As a fashion design student I'm always here every other weekend. Sure, some of the stuff isn't THE most highest quality, but they are more than decent! Plus, great great prices. I love buying thread here which is about $2 for a huge tube in contrast to Britex that is $6 per spool. Lining here is $2 per yard as well, if you want the nice stuff go to the front of the store. Better quality than those cheap paper-y lining at the back of the store. Their silk charmuese collections are on the far right side. It comes in a various of colors and weights for about $6 a yard? SUCH A GOOD DEAL! Another type of fabric I like to shop for here are their wool fabrics .They run anywhere from 5-8 dollars a yard. From time to time they have different textures, patterns, and weights. You have to be patient and check in often. I do recommend that if you see something you like, buy it and save for later or you will regret it! They have the main building which is more of the fashion fabrics, the other two locations in the same lot has upholstery, trims, and one of the carries more gown fabrics! My go-to fabric store. The owner is rude, the place is messy, and the workers can be difficult to communicate with at times. However, this place has a multitude of different and all types of fabric you may be looking for. Sure you may have to search up and down. Sure you may have to wait 10 minutes for one of the employees to cut you fabric. Sure you may deal with the owner who acts as if you are annoying her when you want to complete your purchase. But the variety of fabrics are awesome. and they have a lot of detail pieces such as buttons, laces, and zippers. I was able to make costumes ranging from the tin man to stitch (the blue monster), to cave woman, to ringmaster, and so forth. The best thing about this place? Hands down, the price. There needs to be more fabric stores like this!!! Majority of the stores I've been to only carry fabrics that are meant for DIY projects like pillows, quilts, curtains, and things of that nature. I don't need that... What I'm looking for is the LACEY, SEQUINED, BLING BLING, BEAUTIFULLY EMBROIDERED fabrics to design my vietnamese ao dais and this place is the only place I know of that carries them. Considering that it's San Jose where all the Vietnamese folks pour into, I'm surprised there aren't more stores that carry the kind of fabric for making ao dais. In SoCal you would find these stores back to back in Little Saigon or Orange County... which is why they are so much cheaper down there. Fabrics R Us has no real competition so their prices are definitely higher that other places I've seen. BUT since I can't make a fabric shopping trip down to SoCal every other week as I would like, I have to suck it up and put the money down. They have a large selection of every kind of fabric you could imagine but keep in mind, they are pricey so you might want to consider shopping around at other places if you are buying the more basic kinds of fabrics. read more

Dangerous place to be! I can go in here having a specific fabric in mind and either come out with other fabric, or tons of ideas for future projects. But I have learned not to buy stuff just because "its pretty". I've ended up with a collection of fabric and have become overwhelmed. This is place is just too awesome. The ladies have always been very nice and helpful. If you need help getting fabric cut, you better find someone quick, because there are tons of people fighting for her attention. Came here on a mission for upholstery fabric for my new project. The stores are like jungles of fabrics. Its a bit overwhelming and claustrophobic but for cheap fabric, I'll suck it up. The store was busy but a worker came over and asked if I needed any help. While browsing, I overheard the "boss" tell other workers to be nicer because people called them mean and rude on their yelp reviews.. hahah. While paying for some trim, I asked the boss lady in my broken Vietnamese if they had any other upholstery fabrics and she kind of looked at me dumbfounded for a second then popped up and walked me to the area. Maybe the look I got was because I always get mistaken for being Hispanic or Filipino and there I was speaking Vietnamese? Who knows, anyhoo I couldn't find the price for a couple of the fabrics and when I asked, the lady couldn't find the price either. Another worker came to us and told me how much it was but the boss lady seemed irritated that the price tags weren't there at all. She mumbled a couple things under her breath then left me to browse on my own. I couldn't find what I was looking for but I noticed a roll of lace was only ~$1-2/yd, and huge rolls of ribbon were only $2. I freakin bought the same lace at Joanns a couple days ago for double the price and a small roll of ribbon at Michaels for double as well! Grr. If you're looking for cute printed cotton fabrics, you'll probably have better luck at Hancock Fabrics but for anything else, you should definitely check this place out. Fabrics R Us - LV Leather?! HA! - Fabric Stores Near Me - San Jose, California

Major culture shock! Fabrics R Us is great!!! This little store has tons of rolls of fabric! Including some outside! Inside, the aisles are really just the spaces between the tall rolls of fabric. They have heavy carts with rolls of fabric piled 6 ft. high. They move the carts around around, so you may turn around to discover that the side of the aisle where you came in is now blocked completely. It was kind of exciting, like a forever changing maze. Don't expect the employees to take the roll to a table and cut it. The Vietnamese woman who helped me was really nice and followed me all over the store to each roll of fabric I needed. She told me when she reduced the prices marked on the rolls and somehow memorized all this. I tried to talk to her a bit, but she seemed embarrassed because she didn't speak too much English. She would measure an edge, snip into the fabric a little, grab a fistful, tear it across with sharp yanks, then shove it into my arms. I was horrified the first time, but it was actually pretty cool :) They have a lot of zippers, much cheaper than at other fabric stores, although you have to take a minute to figure out the wacky organization. I wasn't going to keep looking because the store was about to close, but they were really nice and told me to take my time and helped me find what I needed. The employee wrote the prices out on a little piece of paper and then gave it to the cashier. They all seemed to have issues with math, but I didn't feel like I got ripped off. I have the receipts, but I didn't even bother to check, the prices seemed reasonable. You have to tell them ahead of time if you want to pay with cash and get the 4% discount. I actually did this and then discovered that I did not in fact have enough cash (ooops!) I apologized and told them to take back the discount, but they let me keep it. Then about 4 ladies argued fast (and it seemed angrily) in Vietnamese for about 5 minutes, but it turns out they were trying to figure out the math so they could take the cash I did have and charge the rest to my credit card. They stuffed my bunch of fabric with it's tangled nest of hanging threads into a little bag and said "See you tomorrow!" It was quite a cultural experience! I highly recommend it. Someone posted pictures of some beautiful fabrics on the Yelp page for this place, so I chose to venture here for my fabric supplies. I'm not a sewer. Never have been. Crafts and knitting, yes. But I've never felt comfortable with a sewing machine. Nonetheless, I wanted to make some burp cloths for my best friend's baby shower, so I needed the fabric. If you have OCD, take some deep breaths before walking in here. It's a labyrinth of row upon row of fabric rolls. At first, I thought it was all mayhem in the store. But after perusing for a bit, I realized the different fabrics are actually pretty well organized. Sheer here. Animal print here. Upholstery there. Kids themes here. They have TONS (literally?) of fabric options. I found a set of cute plush animal print patterns, but also walked away with some future project ideas. Yup. It's a vietnamese store. And Yup, they are a bit biased toward serving the vietnamese customers. But as i spend more time in the store, i realize that they do this mainly out of embarrassment rather than out of spite. I guess if i didn't speak a foreign language well, i might try and avoid a situation. But in spite of that, they took care of me and even pointed me to material that was better priced that what i originally got. It almost feels like you are in a foreign country. AT first you feel uncomfortable and everyone is looking at you. But after a while, everyone lets their guard down and smiles. The store is a mecca of fabric. There is so much that it will take you hours to work through all the inventory in 2 different buildings. They have material that is super inexpensive $3/yard. But the real value comes in the hgiher end stuff that you would normally by for curtains, upholstery, etc. I bought some stuff at Joanne's for $40/yard. Then found it their for $12. I think that $12 is the most expensive price they have. The other thing that was nice is that you never have to wait more than a few minutes to get your stuff cut or pay. The lines at Joanne's is crazy long. If you find stuff that is damaged, negotiate with them. They seem to like that. Dont' let the negative reviews dissuade you. Go and see for yourself. read more

I finally made a trip to Fabrics R Us thanks to another dancer friend of mine looking for fabric for new competition gowns. A large selection of fabric spread across two store fronts in this industrial area of San Jose. Getting there on the weekends can be a little slower as you have to pass by the crowded flea market. Prices are good. This is the best selection you'll find in the San Jose area. Your other choices are heading up to SF or down to LA. They also have a good selection of rhinestones, I believe. I'll definitely be back. Paying by cash provides you a 4% discount. They also have an ATM on site that charges $1.50 or $2.00 fee. But, the discount can sometimes make up for it. read more

I agree, it is a bit claustrophobic... but that's half the fun! I loved getting lost in the forest of fabric... After a few minutes of unsuccessful forraging for microfiber fabric, I asked for help, and was immediately assisted by a petite Vietnamese lady, with her yardstick and scissors in hand. She measured it out for me, and I was in and out within 15 minutes. Paid cash to take advantage of the 4% discount (strange, but not complaining) and we were off to start our project of reupholstering our dining chair cushions to a gorgeous mocha color. We went yesterday, and liked it. Both stores are pretty chaotic, with most fabric unlabeled, quite often not even a price. But there is a very wide range of fabrics, and if you ask one of the ladies what it is and what it costs they will tell you. I ended up with 60" wide cotton at $3/yard, which is reasonable but not extraordinary. My daughter ended up with 60" wide linen at $5/yard, which is a very good price. She tried a burn test after we got home, and concluded that it was indeed flax linen. read more

Although far from home and far from my friends' home in SJ, I decided to take a trip down to Fabrics R Us. Viet ladies run this store, so also decided to drag along a Viet-speaking friend; unfortunately, she was rather useless once I grilled her on her fabric-speak, and she did not know how to say "yard" in Viet, let alone "zipper." I first heard about this store during a lingerie-making class. Yes, I made panties. No, I don't think I will be doing that again. But this is a great place to go for stretch fabrics, especially if you're like me and you're reluctant to purchase online or through a catalogue. Are you making a swimsuit? Perhaps a leotard? Maybe even a pair of panties? This could possibly be Silicone Valley's response to Spandex House. There are three locations, but they are all in the same shopping center. I have only been to the large one. There's a strange variety of fabrics in this store, or maybe I couldn't find the signs that indicated the different types of fabric. I was sent there too look at stretch laces/fabrics, stretch meshy stuff, and especially a wide array of elastic bands -- EVEN THE FOLD-OVER KIND RARELY FOUND IN STORES -- in a rainbow of colors. I also bought a handful of invisible zippers. I thought they would charge by length, but all their invisible zippers (behind the counter) are $0.75. My other friend did comment that it was the kind of place that he felt too big to be in; he tried to stay in one little corner and just turned round and round to keep an eye on us. The space is tight, and there are ladies hanging about ready to help you at some corners. If you need to get past someone in an aisle, you will invade every type of personal space. This is a great place to check out especially if you're near the area, are thinking of going to the SJ flea market, or are thinking of making anything stretchy. Expect to stay for a long, long, LONG time because every corner has a jumble of different fabrics. I remember seeing upholstery, suiting (maybe wool), prints, wovens, etc, etc. PS. Fabrics R Us is the best and worst fabric store ever. What you save in money you lose in customer service and convenience. There are no labels on most of the fabrics so there's little way to know if a certain fabric is silk or polyester unless you have a lot of experience. The ladies there aren't really happy to see you or are eager to please. I was stuck in a corner today because one shop lady just ignored me when I wanted to get by. I will admit there are lots of choices and some great fabrics at great prices. Unfortunately they're piled on top of each other. Today there were at least two aisles where bolts were stacked on the floor in the middle of the aisle with no way to get to the ones on the racks. Come here on a day where you have lots of time and aren't looking for anything specific. The place also looks like it's never been refurbished. There are missing floor and ceiling tiles in both locations and even missing lights and light covers in at least one of them. read more

Prices here are much cheaper than say at Jo-Anns. Lots of ribbon and zipper choices. I've noticed also that Fabric R Us caters to many Indians and Vietnamese for saris and ao dais. Discount if you pay in cash of course! The owner is a total gossiper about the customers. it's quite entertaining..if you understand Vietnamese. This fabric store is conveniently located close to my house so I go here often. They have a huge selection of fabrics that are reasonably priced but the customer service is absolutely horrible. The lack of attention and customer service is appalling. I always spend way too much time here because I am waiting for somebody to help me cut fabric and the employees often leave you standing there if you pause for more than 2 seconds. Today I came with a small list hoping I wouldn't have to spend hours here but I still spent over an hour for just a few items. On another note, today I got yelled at for asking one of the ladies about a price and going with a different fabric. She was upset because I made her walk 5 feet without taking the fabric... I made my first visit here after others had done a flyby and talked it up...was definitely worth the visit and surprisingly we were able to navigate all 3 stores within just a couple of hours. Definitely recommend going on a weekday, as we did, as it was fairly easy to get customer service. We paid cash to get the discount and the fabric we purchased averaged $2.50-$5 per yard. The main (standalone) store was the most crowded, but it was later in the morning when we got there as we went there last. Interesting selection of silks and novelty fabrics, I even spotted some very high quality imported british wool (in military green tweed) which i would have considered had it been a different season. Lots of fabrics that would be suitable for prom and bridal dresses, as well as tons of stretch jersey and sparkly stuff. Didn't see much if any cotton fabric in the place. Some of the fabric rolls and buttons/accessories in the large store are definitely repeated in the other 2 stores so i'd advise checking out the other 2 stores if the main one is super busy. One of the other two stores has a strong upholstery focus - there is a lot packed into the narrow aisles so you really have to dig a bit to find the jewels. Got some high quality upholstery fabric in designs i haven't seen anywhere else, as well as some basic muslin and trim. The other store seems to focus on fabric for wearables, more of the synthetic jersey and prints and prom/bridal fabric. all 3 shops are worth seeing, the parking lot is a bit of a mess with delivery trucks going in and out. The sewing I do is all specialized projects like ice skating dresses that require a lot of trims, stones, and fabulous fabrics that STRETCH. You can find all of the above on the internet, but not at these prices. Plus I just want to get my hands on it before I buy because you know exactly what weight you're getting. I have never walked out without exactly what I was looking for. There is a massive amount of variety, so I go in with notes on what I'm looking for just because I will get distracted like crazy as it is. And even then I usually get sidetracked and buy extra because there are some amazing fabrics, especially if you need something on the showy side. For example, for a recent project I needed some 4-way stretch velvet in black and white. (Sounds simple but your local Joanns won't carry 4-way stretch, only 2-way, or not in velvet, or if they do it's $14.99 a yard). Not only did they have plenty of 4-way stretch material, they had several varieties in velvet including some shot with silver, some shot with gold, others with glitter, some with a rainbow sheen - just miles of choice where in a regular craft store you'd be lucky to find one version you could use. The prices were around 4.99-6.99 a yard. Also they have a good price on Swarovski crystals. I don't go here for thread or that kind of supply, but for specialty fabrics they are fantastic. read more

I think that if you have an idea of what you're getting into and don't expect anything different, this place will be amazing to you. I didn't have any issues with service and I was prepared to be a little overwhelmed. I wasn't really overwhelmed, I think I was more in awe at being surrounded by so many beautiful (and some a little entertaining) fabrics. I wasn't sure which location would be better or what the difference between the stores were but the prices area amazing. I went around 1:30 on a Friday so it wasn't crowded. I think if it was, it would have sent me over the edge. The women were friendly enough and I didn't feel like they were rude. I saw the woman that helped me answer questions for another woman without seeming short or annoyed. I paid cash and got 18 yards of satin for a wedding project for under $40. Amazing! There is a lot to see here and if you're patient and open to something different, it's an amazing place to get great deals on fabric. read more

This place is a warehouse full of fabric! In my opinion it isn't too organized, but nonetheless, you should take your time looking. Everything is fairly priced, but make sure you look at the fabric you purchase for any breakage and etc before you buy it because it's non returnable. I read up on the other reviews about the customer service and how it sucks, but my experience was nothing short of great service by the ladies. My friend from out of town was looking to buy fabric to make an ao dai for her wedding and the ladies who worked there responded quite nicely to our requests. They were very helpful and gave insight on their expertise on how much fabric we would need. I love this place! read more

Horrible customer service. They talk about you as if you are not there. They practically want me yo measure my own fabric. To be honest, I rather pay more and get more pleasant service. The employees need to understand, without the customer, they do not have jobs. They have cheap synthetic fabric and do not care about their product. You can tell from their displays. read more

came here with my mom and she comes here often... my first time. I must say the selection of fabrics are a lot better than few stores around the area and for the price you cant beat. Why the two stars... oh ya ok these owners are a new definition of RUDE! Honest I am not sure if they are human! I asked the lady if she had a heart... and if she does make it as soft as the fabrics she sold. Went looking for some upholstery fabric and decided to check out Fabrics R Us (very close to the Berryessa flea market site). This store is great for suiting, chiffons, polyester, and other affordable fabrics for clothing, but their upholstery selection was limited to some vinyl and various microfibers. The price was right at $8 a yard, but I wasn't looking for microfiber. All in all, a decent selection ... Although it's so jam packed in there that if there was an earthquake you'd probably be trapped between the lace and chiffons! Wall to wall fabric! read more

Cheap and great quality Tip: search entire store for the fabric you want, it's disorganized and shockingly inconsistent with prices. I bought lace for $5 a yard when the same exact one was $2 a yard in a different location. read more

I've been here on multiple occasions, basically whenever I have fabric needs, and almost all of my visits have been unpleasant for the most part. The fabric is cheap, don't get me wrong, which is what keeps me coming back. There isn't as much variety as I would like, but you get what you pay for. It's the service that really bothers me. The Vietnamese women who work here act like you're bothering them when you ask them to help you cut yards of fabric to purchase. They sigh a lot and make you feel bad for buying fabric, which I find quite odd. I've also seen a customer try to get a worker's attention and heard the worker rudely tell that customer to wait because she was "assisting someone" while she just continued gossiping with another Vietnamese woman in the store. That's no way to do business (if you ask me), but you can't beat these prices. read more
