I originally had a bad review posted here which I immediately took down as it was a misunderstanding on my party's part. I want to share my experience with Enrique as both a masseuse and as the business owner of Face to Face NYC: Enrique gave me the "Ultimate Massage". When I came into the office at the lobby Enrique quickly acknowledged and greeted me. He went to make sure the room as perfect and then came back outside to take me into the room. The room was perfectly lit and air conditioned. He politely gave me time alone to get ready for the table and came back several minutes later to start the massage. The Ultimate Massage: I have never done a deep tissue massage before and so I was not sure what to expect. Enrique delivered in the perfect amount of pressure to apply onto my hard knots both on my back and my shoulders. He started off on my shoulders and upper back and I had such difficult knots on my shoulders it was so painful feeling him loosen them up gradually. But that "pain" was pain of relief and comfort. Enrique did a wonderful job on my neck, shoulders, and back. He then proceeded to the rest of my body: legs, feet, arms, and hands. I had no idea that I had secret hard knots all over my forearm and legs. Enrique used his professionalism and history of his craft by doing techniques that helped to ease up painful knots that has never been touched before; especially in a deep tissue massage. Overall: I felt very relieved and satisfied at the end of my Ultimate Massage that I had asked Enrique if he had time for 30-45 minutes more for a deep tissue massage specifically for my back and shoulders. Folks looking for an otherworldly escape - at least from an aesthetic point of view - will not find it here. There are no candlelit hallways or panpipe love songs being pumped in. The space is tasteful, the bathroom serves its purpose. To be sure, you come to Face to Face NYC not for the "spa experience" but for the men. In my case, Ray. Frankly, I'd much rather have Ray's masterful ministrations upon my flesh, and the aching muscles underneath, than some artifice constructed to "relax" me. Besides, if you aren't relaxed after a few minutes with Ray, there's little hope that anything else might help. Before a massage, I usually tell my masseur that I am quite ticklish. I explained this to Ray before we got down to business. And as he administered the most amazing massage I have ever had I was completely surprised to almost never get tickled. Unlike any massage before, mine at Face to Face NYC with Ray felt like it was really designed for me. It involved a great deal of stretching which felt amazing. And Ray is superbly intuitive and also has a keen understanding of anatomy. And he's wicked strong. Where other massage therapists feel like they're simply going through the motions, I felt like Ray was very present and had a genuine desire to leave me feeling better than he found me. I think Ray is actually gifted for this kind of bodywork. In a way that I, personally, have not experienced before. I had a massage elsewhere a week later and the entire time on the table I could only think of Ray. It is possible that he has ruined me for all others. I've been coming here for many years now, and they never disappoint. The space is a beautiful and clean loft space, and the technician rooms are always clean and comfortable. This is my go to wax spot for my more sensitive male regions, and one of the reasons I keep returning, is their overall professional nature. When Face to Face NYC informed me that I could use this sweet goodness in order to make my girlie bits smooth and soft, I was, well, intrigued. Sugaring has existed in the Middle East for thousands of years, but is very new to our parts. (In fact, only a few salons in the city do the treatment.) An alternative to waxing, it is a form of hair removal using all natural (and edible) ingredients -- sugar and honey. Sugar has huge antiseptic and healing properties, as well, which means that if you have super sensitive skin, the redness will go away much sooner. Sugaring also hurts way less than waxing, though your first time applying it to your bikini area is going to hurt, no matter what. Especially for a girl who has always shaved (My aestician explained to me that this is because shaving an area for years gives it a "beard-like" result, regrowth-wise, and makes removing that hair sort of like ripping a band-aid from skin. Repeatedly.) That said, it wasn't nearly as bad as I was expecting. (Images of writhing legs and cries for my mommy were in my thoughts all day.) It did hurt, and sting a bit after, but the entire process took about a half hour, and I will not have regrowth for about a month. This is very nice when you are used to daily visits with your razor. And even nicer, sugaring weakens the hair root, so less will grow back and when it does grow back, it will be thinner, softer, and much more agreeable to the sugar. (ie: next time, I may not even need those tylenol beforehand!) Lessons I learned during my very first Brazillian bikini sugaring: 1 - Apparently my naughty bits were very excited to meet the sugar, and parts got moist. Even more interestingly, this is very common. (You'd think being naked in front of a stranger with hot substances would give the area pause̷ ;) The problem with this is that when you are sugaring, the area must be completely dry and oil-free. Otherwise, the sugar sort of sticks and has to be dried with powder to be removed. I hope I don't turn into a baked good. 2 -Because sugaring involves completely organic, water-soluable ingredients, it also can remove dead skin cells. So, while you think you are just getting your hair yanked out, you are really getting a great exfoliation as well. I love 2-4-1 deals. 3 - Let your hair grow before waxing/sugaring! I only stopped shaving about a week ago, and because of that, there were some fine blonde hairs too short to get. Without enough regrowth, you can't get your best results. And, by the way, if you have too much regrowth, you better trim, or you'll have trouble as well. Much like giving birth, the euphoria of the results was so plentiful that I was able to hit two parties immediately after with a bounce in my steps and forget the pain -- which was in itself not nearly as bad as the hype. If you do go to Face to Face, ask for Diane. She's super sweet and happily will talk you through things. I had never been waxed before, resorting to clipping and shaving my body hair. However, in certain areas it just grew back coarser and I found I needed to clip and shave more often. I decided that I should try waxing, and spent some time learning more about this on the Internet, and then spent more time looking for professional waxing service. I had narrowed it down to three, and Yelp helped me make my final decision when I read past reviews who recommended Face-to-Face. While I could have made an appointment online, I wanted to check out the salon first and so I visited their location. I was welcomed warmly and liked what I saw - a clean and nicely appointed small salon. I immediately proceeded to make an appointment. On the appointed day, I was nervous at exposing myself as I always get "excited" while at the same time even more frightened at the thought of being plucked like a chicken. This did not matter the least because Enrique immediately made me feel comfortable. His waxing technique was just right - he alternated between areas, and sometimes gave my skin a break when needed. The process, though not without some pain, was quite more bearable than I anticipated, and he took the time to make sure that he got as many of the loose hairs as possible. Being my first time waxing, I noticed that some my hair broke leaving some stub, but this was minimal. Overall, Enrique did such a great job that I immediately booked my return visit four weeks later before leaving the salon. When you arrive, you're greeted by a friendly person, in a clean and private setting. The experience is really that of a 5 star hotel spa. I had Diane and she was really sweet. Went in for a Brazilian but my hair was technically "too short" in waxing terms. It was supposed to be longer for a better grip. She asked if I wanted to come back or keep going and I said just keep going and kept my fingers crossed. She did an amazing job. Not only was it relatively painless considering she had to so the same spots multiple times, but she also tweezed to make it baby smooth. I bought the Bliss pads to prevent ingrowns. In one place, the waxing made me bleed, in another, the aesthetician kept complaining that I was sweating too much (oh, that will help me relax!). And then I came to Diane. If you're sensitive, if you're scared of waxing, or if you just want someone who does an excellent job in every way, look no further. Went for a spa-week Foliage Facial, 50 mins 50$ not a bad deal at all. The place was empty because I was there at noon. I love when a spa is empty and I have all the peace and quiet in the world. The decor was like your trendy gay best friend's chelsea apt. Ikea-ish modern bo-concept kind of stuff. It's definitely not a typical spa that exudes relaxation by blasting Enya and instrumental music, and you wouldn't really want to lounge around and hang out/relax before your treatment. Obviously no saunas and that type of amenities, but there is a very clean private bathroom with shower and razors/combs for the boys. Another reviewer described it as someone's apt converted into a spa and I totally see that! The treatment rooms (3) were clean, minimalistic, and kind of industrial looking, and they were fine for a comfortable experience. Now on to the actual facial... I had Igor. Pros: 1) Igor was friendly, attentive, and he had super soft hands. Actually, the extractions he did were the least painful I've ever had. He explained to me what he was going to do next so I was never weirded out by any weird liquids squirted onto my face. He was also very skillful at doing the facial. My face feels clean and refreshed! I loved that he stayed quiet during most of the facial (some places can be chatty). He took a look at my skin and suggested micro dermabrasion (which would cost extra). He didn't sell too hard which I really appreciate. I turned it down. He also gently recommended a toner but I never felt pressured to accept. 2) I love the part when he put a hot/warm towel on me and I think he did it 3-4 times! 3) They must have soak the towels with cloves and eucalyptus because they smelled amazing. Very relaxing indeed. Con: 1) Facial was advertised to have some acupressure massage to scalp, face and neck. I didn't get that at all. Just some massage on my arms/hands, which felt nice. 2) The Pumpkin mask smelled interesting.... I definitely preferred the clove and eucalyptus stuff in the beginning. 3) The music! It went from euro trip hop to show tunes. A weird mix that I didn't find too relaxing. I guess I'm more conventional that way. 4) the floors did creek (as another reviewer mentioned). perhaps they should consider getting areas rugs? Overall the experience was clean and pleasant. I just went back for another brazilian with Enrique. I think I will just keep seeing Enrique. He's awesome. I had the same experience as last time; he was very professional, very nice, and again, he asked me if I needed a break (he saw me wincing). He seems to take his time, which I consider a good thing; some people might think that they want hair removal (via sugaring or waxing) to go as quickly as possible, but I like that he makes sure that all the hairs are gone. He's thorough. I think there may have been some leftover hairs the last time I saw him, but this time? Nothing! My boyfriend's in Vegas and I was supposed to hop on a flight earlier this evening to see him, but all flights were cancelled due to the snow storm. Too bad he can't enjoy this. :P Well, he will... but not till Christmas Eve. Anyway, when I walked in, I noticed that they had a copy of Pulp magazine on display with Enrique on it. There was also a copy in the waiting area, which I skimmed really quick. Without a doubt, I cannot recommend this place high enough. I am leaving on a trip to Thailand in a few days and was very interested in having some waxing and "manscaping" done for the first time. Understandably, I wanted the very best and was willing to travel from Philadelphia to New York City to have this done properly - this is not something you want to skimp on or go to places where they do this "once in a while." Before I even arrived, the staff and the email communication was first rate. All of my questions were answered patiently and the Facebook page answered even more questions that I had so I felt prepared as I could be. Arriving in New York City for the day and finding the location was easy. It's on the 6th floor of a commercial building. From the outside door, I was not sure what to except but when I walked in, I was blown away. Let me just say this place is spick and span clean -- sparkling. I felt like I was in Toyko or Iceland -- spotless. The receptionist was wonderful. She immediately made me feel like she was not being "fake" but was genuinel courteous -- I believe her name was Eileen. She was an absolute sweetheart and offered you water or wine and a comfortable seat in a pleasant waiting area. I have to say if you are a bit nervous, grab the wine :) but I just took the water. I then met Enrique -- let me just say he is the picture of professionalism. Cordial, polite and thorough -- too many adjectives to list. I felt like I knew him for 10 years. The procedures themselves that I had done were my eyebrows, nose, ear and overall "south of the border" work as well as underarms. Did it hurt... YES but I can tell you that it would have hurt 100 times more with someone who did not know what they were doing! The procedure itself was done with the most amazing professionalism -- I can't even begin to describe it. The aftercare was simple with just minor itching afterwards that went away later that evening. Yes, it was on the expensive side but so is anything of quality. I felt completely satisfied with what I paid vs. what I received. Very fair considering the results and the entire experience. Here is the best part -- if you are a man and considering getting this please do not hesitate. You will love the way you look. Even if you cannot afford to do it regularly, you should do it for a special occasion like a trip, honeymoon or "just because," etc. It will make you look the best you can possibly be. I went this week for the back-to-back massage. Andrea, the receptionist, was a friendly, offered me water and wine and made sure that I was settled in nicely. Ken, my masseuse, came over to greet me, asked me a few questions to assess the type of problems I'd been facing and to gauge the type of work I'd need done, then got to work. OMG! This was the best massage ever. The pressure was perfect, the room was cozy, the music was relaxing, and Ken, Oh Ken! He annihilated the knots that set up condos in my back and shoulders. The spa was clean and very comfortable. The bathroom has a shower and products that you can test before buying at reception on your way out. I am very picky about waxing, and I just love this place. When you come in they offer you a beverage (water, wine) right away. The place is clean, and has nice decor. My waxer, Sal, has some sort of magic touch where it is basically painless, I've certainly never had a bad reaction, and Sal makes sure to leave no strays.... Plus they take appointments well into the evening so I can always squeeze it into my schedule. I have never written a Yelp review before, and I try to take reviews with a grain of salt, keeping in mind that the majority of reviewers have had an abnormally negative or abnormally positive experience. Unfortunately, I just cannot get over how rude the person I just spoke to was regarding my appointment. She might make it for the last half hour though, so would I want to change my hour-long massage to a half hour? I was a little upset seeing as how this was my birthday treat to myself (today is my birthday and I took a vacation day from work to go get this massage+facial) but asked how changing to a half hour would affect the price. The very bored man on the phone begins, "Well the original package is $250, so I'm not sure. I would have to calculate it." A) Your website says $165... and B) after explaining this, I then had to go, "Well okay... so could you calculate it? And please let me know?" He proceeded to make absolutely no effort to do so and was offended I had even asked, despite it being his suggestion. When he finally did, he told me it would be more expensive than the $165. I responded, "Why is that? If I'm getting a shorter massage, why would it be more expensive?" No matter how I phrased what I believed to be a very rational question, he would repeat, "That's just how our pricing works." I was mostly bothered that the man on the phone did not care at all that I was clearly upset, and he was unapologetic for the inconvenience. I was here for a massage during Spa Week. This is a smaller, boutique spa in a larger commercial building. The atmosphere is calm, serene. I know these guys are really known for their skin care, so getting a massage is probably like getting the Shrimp Scampi at a steakhouse. I really really wanted to like this place after reading so many wonderful reviews but I hate to say how disappointed I was. I can't quite recall the name of the woman who attended me, i don't believe she ever even introduced herself when the session was about to begin. She was very very quick and was in a rush to get me out of there. As soon as I saw her she just gave me this very strange smile and walked me Into the room. For such a personal experience where your truly supposed to trust and feel comfortable with esthetician, I must say I felt the complete opposite. She was definitely informative when I was asking her all my questions before I began my treatment but after that it was 1 2 3 and done. When the treatment was over with she just walked out, didn't say a word, didn't give me any sort of instruction, i wasn't sure if I was even supposed to wait or leave. Didn't see her again after that. Maybe I just went on a bad day I'm not sure. The place seems clean and offers great services but one of the services they definitely don't offer is good welcoming customer service. Best massage I've ever had. Hands down. This was a gift from a close friend who lives in San Francisco. She was recommended Face to Face by a friend of hers who is a regular there. She bought me a really nice gift card and I booked myself a massage. There was some initial confusion because the massage therapist I originally booked with left - and they called me to have me reschedule with Enrique the owner. There was some additional confusion about the the time and scheduling of that. BUT - here's what counts: Their customer service in handling the confusion was outstanding. I was a real grump with them when there was confusion the second time. They were still so professional and understanding and went out of their way to make it right. Enrique upgraded my massage and they got me in the following week. Then, the day of my massage, I arrived and the lovely receptionist poured me a glass of wine. Enrique was very attentive in asking about where in my body I had any stress / pain. It was so relaxing, I can't even adequately describe the experience. Except to say that Enrique knows his business. I felt like the moment the massage started he intuitively knew where my body needed attention and didn't hold back. His technique was so thorough and intuitive and complete. I felt like a different, far more relaxed and happier person after. I will definitely be back shortly for another massage with Enrique. He is super nice, skilled and relaxing - and the entire experience was pretty much flawless. Even with the initial confusion - it was still a five star experience. These guys really know what they are doing. I had the basic bikini, the marble sac with shaft and the backdoor treatment. Completely painless! I was hesitant to try it as i did want any major rashes or after effects as i have sensitive skin. No negative after effects. To be honest i have never felt sexier. read more
