Fairchilds Marker is a unique blend of 50% delicatessen, 50% liquor store, and 25% gift shop. I'm obviously not very good at math, but Fairchilds Market's owners have done a very good job creating a diverse menu of tasty freshly cooked-to-order custom burgers made from Pat LaFrieda-sourced beef, signature sandwiches, trademark sloppy joes, wraps, and salads; carrying a good selection of locally-sourced or unique liquor; maintaining a small but well-curated gift section that carries a variety of eclectic home décor items; and establishing a cozy, welcoming environment that ties it all together. I had the Natasha signature sandwich ($11), a breaded chicken cutlet served with caramelized onions and a light Russian dressing on a crispy baguette, with a bag of Joe Chips and my dining companion went with breakfast for lunch and had a veggie omelette ($10) with a side salad. Both of us were very satisfied with the taste and portion sizes of our food. The process of ordering and paying for your meal is unique in that you have to queue up at the counter to wait for someone to take your order and prepare your food, then line up again to pay the cashier for your meal. The seating area occupies less than a quarter of the space, so seating may be difficult especially because the ambiance encourages people to linger long after they've eaten and table turnover is low. While Fairchilds Market is only open for breakfast and lunch, they also offer a small selection of prepared foods to go -- soups, chicken wings, etc. -- for dinner at home. Fairchilds Market's liquor selection emphasizes locally-sourced items, including a wide variety of locally-produced craft beers (e.g., Carton, Man Skirt, Magnify, Cape May, and Fort Nonsense, just to name a few); locally-distilled liquors; and hard-to-find low-volume wineries. One of those places that whenever I go I always ask myself why I don't go more often and I really don't have a reason. Food is absolutely delicious. They have an extensive and very well curated wine selection and their gifts really can't be beat. Of course all of this comes at a price but so do most things that are worthwhile. I usually stop by for breakfast once a week or so and pick up some wine or a 6 pack of whatever craft brew seems to suit me at the moment. Prefer the breakfast burrito wrap with bacon and a splash of hot sauce. I think I'm going to make a conscientious effort to hit them up a bit more often. I think you should too. Kudos. read more

Fairchild's has been in Roseland for as long as I can remember. The last time I was there was over 10 years ago. Fortunately, like the wine they sell, this place ages we'll. I went with the "light lunch" which is soup and a half sandwich. The soup was the famous "Pal's Cabin" cream of mushroom. Just like when Pal's was around, this soup is a must! I then had the chicken salad on 7 grain. This may have been the best chicken salad I've ever had! Fairchild's prices are on the high side, but the quality is there also. I used to order lunch from here all the time when I worked in the area, and was recently able to pop in after a bit of a hiatus to grab takeout. Their shop is eclectic, boasting everything from wine to hand soaps, to dinnerware to bug repellent. Besides made-to-order food, they have refrigerated pre-made meals (mac and cheese, buffalo wings, etc.), chocolate, baked goods, and so much more. They have daily lunch specials, so definitely check those out. The split pea soup is amazing! My go-to's are the 101 signature sandwich (Black Forest ham, brie & honey mustard) on 7-grain bread and the Tuscan salad with grilled shrimp. If you do get a salad, or get anything that's compatible with salad dressing, you MUST get the house balsamic vinaigrette - I insist. It's a mix of white balsamic, oil, eggs, spices and magic. It's my favorite dressing in the world. You can even buy a container of it. Moving on, prices are a bit on the steep side (a sloppy Joe and Tuscan salad with grilled shrimp set me back $27). I always feel like I'm vacation in when I'm at Fairchilds. It kind of has a quaint New England vibe. Very good sandwiches. Excellent Pal's Cabin burgers. Fantastic, dare I say the best steak fries. Terrific open faced turkey sandwiches. Plus, they usually have a nice variety of deserts. Rice pudding, carrot cake, etc. Pal's Cabin was a generational favorite in this neck of the woods before closing. Look it up. The fact that they have continued to serve some of Pal's signature offerings is worth five stars alone. Brings me back to my childhood. While waiting for your meal you can browse Fairchild's extensive selection of wine and beer. As well as gifts, crafts, etc. Great little place that is worth a trip. read more

I'm not a fan of giving negative reviews but after multiple visits I felt I had to share. The first time I visited Fairchilds I got the breakfast burrito which took 20 minutes to make it was so so at best. Yesterday I face it another shot and tried the Buffalo chicken wrap and fries on the side. The wrap was surprisingly small, it was filled 98% with lettuce and 2% with cold chopped up tiny pieces of chicken. It was not edible I had to throw it away. This is a great place to get alcohol if you need it early in the morning (like for festivals or tailgates) since they open at 7 or 8 am. I was pleasantly surprised the they had a lot of cool beers to choose from that you can't find at a Bottle King or other large chain, in addition to the hard liquors. They have this amazing 5.6% alcoholic kombucha that I am in love with. I also went here recently to get lunch for the first time and I ordered the pinstripe sandwich and my bf got the French dip. I did not read the description to see that my sandwich included rare beef, but when I asked them to toast it for me they gladly did so and even walked my plate back out to me. The French dip was amazing the way it was and I would definitely go again for it! They make their own sweet tea too, which I liked, but definitely could've been better if the tea taste was more prominent. It tasted a little watered down. read more

I grew up going to Pals Cabin. We knew the staff and had a favorite table. When it was time to celebrate a victory at work or a special day in general, Pals was usually the destination. I was gutted when it closed. But Pals lives on at Fairchilds Market in Roseland, a bright, pleasant market/restaurant. Place your order up front and the food is brought to you in short order. My son and I stopped in the other day. He had never been to Pals. Alas, he was a picky eater as a youngster and steaks, burgers and hot dogs were not his thing. They are now. Rare burger with sauteed onions for me. Foot long hot dog for him. Waffle fries and onion rings. Everything was delicious. The burger was rare. The buns were toasted, a nice touch. The onion rings and waffle fries were outstanding. Only thing keeping this from a five star review was the sour faced cashier, perhaps an owner who had nothing pleasant to say. In fact, she said nothing. Just pushed a receipt at me and elected to pick up the phone instead of saying thanks. Pretty mentally taxing stuff to thank a customer. Put a damper on a very nice meal. We're from Jersey though and rude folks come with the territory. Regardless, we'll be back to enjoy the fine food here soon. read more

I ordered a burger but they made a mistake and gave me two sliders. I thought it would be okay but...Awful bland burgers. No lettuce tomato onion or pickle. I've never been to a place that doesn't at least give you a pickle with the burger. We had to wait 15 minutes for these little hockey pucks on a bun so we looked around the shop which is very cute but extremely overpriced as were the sliders. I will not be going back ! read more

I went after work today to check out the menu. Which looked great. I asked how should I order and the guy making sandwiches said someone will attend to you. Ok so I waited and waited. I looked at the rest of the women who were behind the counter at the register etc. No one offered to take my order. Someone came in from sitting outside and ordered in front of me at the counter. Another person came and ordered with a different guy at the counter. Then a 3rd person came which the sandwich guy greeted and asked what he wanted. At this point I turned around left. I felt like I was being ignored and passed over for what reason I have no idea. So I will not be returning. Hopefully they are more hospitable to future customers. read more

My sister and I had lunch at Fairchilds Market. What a great find! We shared the Gobbler and a Pulled Pork Sandwich. Both were delicious! Came out warm, all the ingredients were fresh. So, you order your food. Pick out a drink. Sit down at one of the tables. In no time at all, your lunch is delivered to you. After eating, go up to the register, tell them what you had and pay! After we finished, we enjoyed looking around at the things for sale. There is a wide variety of wine and beer. There is also hard liquor, too. And other interesting things to buy. I've bypassed Fairchild's market for years and finally tried it out on Monday. Well worth the stop for the freshness of it's prepared foods and it's ambience. It almost feels like a better market/charcuterie in Southampton. Beautiful interior with bare brick, large bright seating area, great selection of wines not typical to more commonly distributed varietals available at Shop Rite or Total Wine. Picked up a delicious reuben sandwich for only $8.50. I enjoyed it so much and big enough for lunch and dinner. I brought my mother their yesterday. She loved it too. We each had the mushroom soup, which was very good and reminiscent of Pals Cabin. She had a nicely prepared pulled pork sandwich and I enjoyed a Cobb Salad. It was so huge I could only eat 1/2. It's not tableside service, so you order at the counter and they bring your order. I'd put Fairchilds Market's quality up against Ann Arbor's Zingerman's, which is a formidable operation. Of course you give up Frank Carillo's artisan bread and the oversized portions, but the sandwiches cost 1/2 as much as Zingerman's. I will be back! read more

I was impressed by the charming and eclectic interior but highly disappointed by the food and service. I ordered the Pinstripe sandwich after waiting 3 minutes to be noticed which was mediocre at best and unclear what the pinstripe title referenced. No one greeted me upon arrival or departure. The staff was very confused by the orders they were recieving (couldn't read thier own handwriting or confirm some orders). A hello, thank you or even a smile goes a long way that no one provided to me. This was a one and done for me that I obviously will not revisit. Such a shame. read more

This is a nice place to eat. Their sandwiches and food from the grill are delicious but their food from the deli case are lacking. I don't know why they can't cook their chicken tenders in from their grill section. They precook them and store them in the deli case which is refrigerated. One time I ordered them and when I was served them they were just luke warm and extremely dry. They have a nice selection of drinks and an amazing wine section. They also have unique gifts for sale which I like looking to see what they have new while I wait for my food. The behind the counter service could use improvement. Most of the time the person who it making my order seems as though they would want to be anywhere else and doing anything that isn't getting my food together. They just come off with attitude.
