The doctors and medical staff are top notch, kind and caring. We have used them 5 times. But unfortunately I cannot recommend them in good conscience. 1) They have a voice mail system that does not connect to a human unless you press "5" for the nurses station. I have tried to verify billing and scheduling, over a dozen calls and 2 hours of "please wait"/on hold (hung up after 20+ minutes 4 times). Had to requests cancelling procedure to get a return call. 2) Deceptive billing. We verified 3 times that this would be 100% covered by insurance but billed over $500 in "fees". Most were double billed. 3) No email address given for way to contact staff 4) Chatbox to reach representative does not work "times out" and never connects 5) Patient portal never finds my records and reports "no match found" and will not let me login. Endless loop of create account/change password/no match found Sorry, don't waste your time. It is too frustrating to deal with the administrative side. Horrible! Avoid this place at all cost!! I was referred to this practice after an ER visit with what seemed like a minor issue, the doctor proceeded with a painful, invasive exam that left me worse than when I walked in, which later caused an infection that needed surgical intervention. I met with another doctor at the same practice who gave me an even worse diagnosis than the first doctor, he blatantly said that my ordeal with them is far from over and that it will take years for recovery! I ran as fast I could and consulted with other CSR's, until I finally found a doctor I trust who did the surgery to fix the infection that they caused. To their credit, the front office staff as well as the nurses are very pleasant, it is easy and fast to schedule appointments but the doctors here are scam artists who don't deserve their medical licenses. *Note: if you notice, all the raving reviews are from a certain "demographic", if you don't belong to that group you will not be treated the same, no matter how educated you are, these doctors will treat you like trash because of your national origin. read more

Dr Sanchez performed surgery to remove a rectal tumor in 2022 and I've been getting follow-up exams since then. I've had nothing but positive and professional care throughout. Sanchez has worked well with my care team from Inova during the entire process. I had a procedure scheduled and never received an invoice for final payment due, and upon checking in day of procedure the receptionist threatened to cancel my procedure because I did not settle the final balance when per their policies I have 30 days to remit payment and I did not bring my wallet with me as this is a discouraged practice espoused by Fairfax County Dept of Health. Overall very poorly run practice and extremely incompetent staff. Quality of care by providers is OK. Note although this is a group practice, the physicians basically don't talk to each other and they don't even know the other doctors' specialties, so your quality of care is 100% provider specific. read more

Today marks the 3 year Anniversary of the surgery I had with Dr. Matzie for rectal prolapse. I have lived in constant pain from the moment I woke up from surgery due to the neurogenic pain she caused. After numerous blocks failed, I have had 3 additional surgeries traveling to Atlanta to see the top mesh removal specialist, Cleveland Clinic where it was a dual surgery performed by both the Department heads of Colorectal and Urogynecology and when Cleveland Clinic felt the problem was beyond their expertise they referred me to the world renowned Neuropelveologist surgeon, Dr. Marc Possover in Zurich, Switzerland. Most of this was not covered by insurance so I have spent in excess of $80,000 and am still in constant pain. This last surgery was performed on 23 January 2023 and it could take up to 2 years to know the outcome. I made a very poor decision in choosing Dr. Kimberly Matzie and if I can do anything I hope that others will NOT choose Fairfax Colon & Rectal. read more

So, I wasn't overly impressed with this office. I read the reviews online and I have to say I now understand most of the negative ones. I appreciate how quickly they scheduled me, but that's about my only positive thing to say. I paid by specialist copay- looking at the EOB of charges submitted- they bill out the plastic device that keeps your butt cheeks open as a "procedure" vs included in the damn visits UCR- thus- it's applied to your deductible for the full cost ($157). If you see a butt doctor, the devices used to look at your butt should be included in the exam charges- not billed out as a procedure. Nothing was performed other than an exam. Whatever, I'll eat that cost. Lesson learned. What bothers me most is that I needed to schedule an extremely invasive surgery- I was told to take 3-4 weeks off work due to the pain. I get an email asking if I would like to schedule- I said I spoke with my insurance/I also work in medical billing, and a predetermination of benefits is REQUIRED by my insurance. I was told they will NOT SEND THE PREDETERMINATION until 7-10 days before the surgery AFTER I schedule it. They will not send the predetermination until I schedule- and even if I schedule months in advanced- they won't send the predetermination until 7-10 days before. Not a great way to be proactive in allowing your patients to make an informed decision in such an important matter. " Our financial services that we provide prior to procedures include running an estimate of benefits 7-10 days prior to your procedure. This is our procedure that we follow for all patients, and we have not heard of any issues thus far. If you wish to contact your insurance company separately for more information, I am happy to provide you with the appropriate codes for you to do so" word of month doesn't fly with insurance, so no, I would like everything to be in writing. I need to know how much my OOP is WELLLLLL before the WEEK of my surgery. And if I couldn't afford the surgery fee- but didn't find out until a few days before the scheduled surgery- I'd be hit with a late cancellation fee. I've had other surgeries before- a predetermination is always made well in advanced so the patient can make an informed decision. The billing practices and the doctor saying "ew that's gross" vs telling me what actually was happening to me are the reasons I'm not giving them thousands of dollars. I will spend my time and money on an honest practice. I'm sure I'll get a snarky response back on why IM the problem like so many others. I work in your industry, guys, and I'm appalled. read more

While I have no issues with the doctor I visited, I received exactly 10 min. of service with 7 min. of that being an office visit where I received a pamphlet and a list of items to purchase from CVS. I didn't receive a resolution to my issue, merely a laundry list of more items to buy. For this service, they ended up billing my insurance over $600. This was approximately 10 min. of interaction, but around 1.5 hours of my time waiting for my appointment. Here's what to note: - They're going to overcharge your insurance and you'll more than likely have to pay money for services rendered, even if you don't receive significant care or a resolution to your issue. - Wait times are long. They request you arrive at least 30 min. before your appointment, but I was not seen until 45 min. after my appointment time even though I arrived 30 min. before the appointment. - You may just get a pamphlet for your time, and a bill for more money after. Overall, I was not pleased with the service and do not recommend it. This only validated my rationale for not visiting doctors unless there is an actual medical emergency or absolutely necessary. They just want to charge you and your insurance as much money as possible. read more

I had an appointment with Dr. Stern. The receptionist was very professional and a joy to speak with. The nurse was a gem!!!! Her and I had a great laugh and made light of my upcoming procedure. Dr. Stern was very friendly, asked me what my main complaint was, took his time to listen to me. Then he had me do a couple of things to figure out what it might be. The conclusion was the rubber band treatment, due to waiting to have surgery because of the pain and recovery period. He was very professional and listened to me. They were not able to get a copy of my colonscopy test results from previous doctor due lunch time.but doctor Colvin advised from my answers to his question that there is no rush to do other colonoscopy test and I requested to postpone till Spring of 2020. Doctors are ok. I've seen several. But administratively, they have always been a trainwreck. And the waits are very long to be seen. Their website has a patient portal (PP). They switched to a new provider without informing me. So I called in twice only to be transferred to a full inbox greeting. So I called again and asked for director of admin. Then transferred to another greeting and LM. She called back and sent me an email to establish a new PP account. The new system failed twice to send me a code. So I went back to their website to contact them about the problem. And so the contact form failed to submit. So now you understand what I mean by trainwreck. read more

Dr.Kalifeh was great! I only waited about 10 minutes past my appointment time and she got straight to the point and found the source of my problem. She made me very comfortable even during the uncomfortable parts of the examination. Dr.Kalifeh is extremely knowledgeable in her field and was able to explain my conditions in a detailed, easy to understand manner. She also took the time to answer my questions, highly recommended. Making an appointment was also very easy. The front desk lady could use some improvements though as she appeared very unwelcoming and unhelpful. I also thought the checkin process on the ipad could be improved as it is very restricting and odd for certain parts such as the inability to enter medical conditions not listed for certain parts of the forms and needing to enter the EXACT address of your choice of pharmacy, instead of the zipcode and the name of the place. read more

I will not be going back to this practice ever again. It was my first colonoscopy and while I'm grateful for the doctor finding a small polyp, I had a horrible experience with the anesthesiologist who had zero bedside manners. I am still experiencing a lot of muscle strain in my abdomen two weeks post and no one who I have spoken to at the practice seems concerned. I was given zero post procedure instructions. I was told by my nurse who was in the room while I had the procedure that she pressed on the left side of my abdomen to help make things go smoother. When I actually talked to the doctor who did my colonoscopy she said that never happened. Regardless, I will not be recommending this facility or going there ever again. It was the worse medical experience I have had. What is the most frustrating thing to me is the lack of accountability and apology. I am not looking for anyone to loose their jobs, but a sincere apology would have done wonders. read more

I liked Dr. Colvin a lot. The administrative aspects of this office are not good and, unfortunately, this is VERY important. I always pay when I am in the medical office as i have a health care savings (HSA) account. This office said I never paid and dinged me with a collection notice. I was sent notices apparently. So for $107 they dinged my credit and now expect me to give my HSA debit card info to a collection agency. Unacceptable. Interestingly, I had an earlier medical appointment and no problems with that payment. I am documenting in my health care information to never use this practice again. For $107 they lost my business and that of anyone within ear shot of me. We are all just cogs in the wheel of the great medical money grab that is not the fault of the doctors in the field who are just trying to help people. read more

Bad medical advice from Dr Khalifeh, who is obviously incompetent. I told her I had diarrhea often and it caused me pain and she told me to take fiber supplements, which led to.... guess what?.... even more diarrhea. And then they billed my insurance company almost $600 for a 30-second "exam" of my anus and a 5-minute consultation with the incompetent doctor. My insurance company refused to pay that much, but I'm still left with over $160 to pay out of pocket for absolutely nothing. My advice is to avoid this place like the plague, there are other more professional and ethical doctors at other practices. read more

Check-in process was streamlined with electronic tablets, which was nice. The nurse (Jackie I think?) was so personable and efficient. Dr. Cheng was so helpful. Not only did she exhibit excellent bedside manner throughout the visit, but she was also very knowledgeable. She sat down with me at the end of the visit, answered all my questions, and explained everything in detail. I even left with a diagram and written notes/instructions. I was a patient yesterday in the Gainsville office. I don't normally write reviews unless it is outstanding and then i might write a positive review. However, my experience was so surprisingly negative, I feel it is important to share. The recectionist treated me with such disrespect. She asked me if I had a mask and I told her I did not. With an indignant stare she began an interroagation (are you sure you have no mask? do you have a mask in your car? why don't you have a mask? etc) I guess if I had said I had a mask in my car she would have sent me back to my car. She finally handed me a box full of masks with the continued admonishment look. Then she didn't stop -- She said I am just so surprised you don't have a mask. I said well most places no longer require masks and she shook her head with the same angry stare. Then she said I needed to fill out forms. I said of course. She handed me some paper and told me to fill it out standing at the reception area. Normally they give you a writing board and a smile. On the forms it asked for an emergency contact and then ask if the patient would be ok with discussing my medical condition with them. I provided an emergency contact but said no not to discuss my condition with them. Soon after reviewing my forms the receptionist called me up from seat to ask me why I would not share my medical condition with my emergency contact and again gave me the same angry judgemental look. I didn't respond but it is highly inappropriate for the receptionist to question my personal health questionaire responses. The dr. I see in that practice is so friendly, flexible and has a great bedside manner. It is sad that the office can't get the same kind of kind care in the front office. I totally respect any mask requirement and have no problem wearing the mask, but I have never been treated with such unecessary rudeness. read more

If I could give them 0 star, I would. Worst receptionist ever and deceptive service to just squeeze extra money out of patients! I scheduled a colonoscopy but was told to come in for a doctor's visit, with no indication what was that for but a requirement for the colonoscopy. I took a sick day off, spent less than a minute with the doctor and was then charged for that visit - the insurance won't cover it because it was not billed as part of the colonoscopy. Billing problems aside, 7 days prior to the scheduled procedure, I had no idea what time the procedure would be, what I should be preparing for and what medication I should have, until I called and asked. Yet the receptionist was rude and didn't give me a sense of her willingness to even want to help. Several phone calls later, I had no choice but canceled the appointment - after out-of-pocket expenses for a less-than-a-minute doctor's visit which was supposed to be part of the procedure which won't happen. Just want to let everyone know to be careful when you come to their service. When you don't feel patients' interest is their first and foremost when you are fully awake, who knows what could be after you are knocked out! read more

Dr. Donald Colvin was the doctor who did my procedure. He was very nice and knew exactly what needed to be done. All went well until three weeks after the procedure. You see I was the person who falls into that one percent that something could go wrong. Other then that they are very up-to-date in the office as far is when you check-in. Your check in is done on a table, A little challenging for those elderly people who have a hard time with them. I'm young and it wouldn't let me more on cause I had to answer every question. I had to spend hundreds of dollars out of pocket for a prescription, as recommended by Dr. Linda Dougherty, in preparation for an appointment scheduled as recommended by Dr. Linda Dougherty. Two days prior to the appointment date, Dr. Dougherty cancelled the appointment. No reasonable reschedule was offered, the first available date being almost a month later. There was no offer of compensation for the prescription costing hundreds of dollars that Dr. Dougherty had prescribed in preparation for the appointment she cancelled. The alternative offered was an appointment with an unnamed subordinate despite the fact that I had specifically rejected the suggestion by Dr. Dougherty at the initial appointment, made the follow-up appointment with Dougherty, and then received from Fairfax Colon confirmation of the appointment. In making the appointment I had specifically alerted the desk personnel of the possibility of Dougherty's going on vacation in an attempt to avoid any issues relating to the proposed schedule. The reason provided for the cancellation was simply laughable. It is unclear why the name of the subordinate was not stated by either Dougherty or Fairfax Colon as without the name I could not vet the provider and ensure insurance coverage within the timeframe left under the prescription I had been taking in preparation for the appointment cancelled by Dr. Dougherty. It appears that Dougherty knew when the appointment was scheduled that she would have a conflict; that she would not honor the appointment; and, that she accepted the appointment with the intent of passing the appointment to an unnamed subordinate. It was cavalierly manipulative, costing me additional hundreds of dollars out of pocket, causing me additional discomfort in disregard my stated preferences, and demonstrating that neither Dr. Dougherty nor Fairfax Colon can be trusted. I was very surprised by the treatment I received from Dr. Dougherty and Fairfax Colon and Rectal. I had thought more highly of both the doctor and the office. read more

Aspects of my experience were totally stellar while others were wayyy subpar. For starters, I've said it in my review of the Virginia Hospital Center Physicians Group - Colorectal Surgery, and I'll say it again here: yeah, I think I'm supposed to keep this experience to myself, but I just can't help it! Third trimester of pregnancy, two back-to-back external hemorrhoids -- safe to say I was absolutely miserable. MISERABLE. When I made the first phone call, I had been Googling the bejeezies out of hemorrhoids, including the chances of them going away while pregnant. I'm a big fan of Dr. Google (though I'm sure I drive the medical field nuts) and was positive I had an external thrombosed hemorrhoid and that I had it solely because of pregnancy -- my diet was good, no constipation, so it had to be the pressure from the big ol' baby I was carrying. Through my research just on home treatment, I landed on this page from Fairfax Colon & Rectal that stated that a thrombosed external would go away on its own but that it could be treated immediately through surgery with a quicker resolution. The page also said, "At Fairfax Colon and Rectal Surgery we make every effort to promptly see you within 24 hours of your call so that you can be relieved of this problem as quickly as possible." I figured it'd be worth it for an expert to check me out. Enter Christy (sp?), who I spoke with every time I had a scheduling issue. She was a godsend. She could sense my agony and fit me in immediately with Dr. Stern, even working to get me into the office most convenient for me. They will double-book in emergencies, and she counted me as one, thank heavens. Dr Stern was fantastic. Very professional. Very friendly, knowledgeable, explained things well. He immediately agreed that it was an external thrombosed and recommended excision, saying that yes, because I was pregnant it would not likely go away on its own, and excision reduced the chance of the issue recurring due to labor and delivery. He excised it right there in the office. The surgery was quick, only mildly painful (getting the anesthetic) and healed well. (My follow up with him was also great - I'd recommend Dr Stern in a hot second.) Only a couple days later I knew I had another one. I called again, and Christy once again swiftly fit me in, but this time with Dr Khalifeh. While Dr Kalifeh was incredibly friendly, I was less impressed with her diagnosis. To make a long story short, she said the surgery was unnecessary and turned me away, despite me telling her my pain was an 8 out of 10, and that it was keeping me from sleeping. She gave me a cream and said it'd improve in 1-2 days and that I could call back to be seen if I had a problem. I knew that they were running over an hour behind and that the patient behind me had given them an ultimatum, so I wondered whether Dr. K just didn't want to spend the time with me. Maybe that's not fair, but despite her not rushing me in other ways, the thought still crossed my mind. When I'd seen no improvement in 24 hours, I tried calling back. But since they'd just seen me and I'd been turned away, they weren't willing to double-book without a nurse's approval. The nurse looked at Dr Khalifeh's notes and said she had written that the hemmy was internal. I knew that this was wrong, despite Dr Khalifeh having mentioned that it might be partly internal, but no matter, they would not see me. I guess they figured I'm not the dr, so I had to be wrong. I hung up in tears. Instead of arguing with them, I found another practice who also fit me in immediately (see aforementioned group). They confirmed that the hemmy was external and excised it immediately. I was disappointed with Dr Khalifeh's (mis?)diagnosis and then subsequent refusal by the nurse to take my word for it. By the way, I read some folks had trouble with their insurance. You can generally call ahead and try getting codes for various procedures and calling them into your insurance to see what the final cost will be to you. With both practices, my portion of the cost for each surgery was ridiculously affordable. read more
