I'm new to shooting, I've been there a couple of times with my new .357 revolver and thought it was great. The guy behind the counter was very helpful, I liked the range, it was comfortable and easy to get acclimated. Boy do I have a lot to say! I am 59 year old woman and I have a disability from a baby stroke and cannot use my right arm. And yes. I know that for me to shoot a firearm will be very challenging. No illusions on my end. And that's why I take extra time in practicing and learning everything in my life. Lessons in firearms for anyone are absolutely needed! So, after passing the safety course, passing background checks, being fingerprinted and waiting a very long time I got my pistol permit. I recently have had three lessons with a firearms expert at the Fairfield County Firearms and Archery in Norwalk, Connecticut (and another two with another expert), I decided to do a practice session by myself only to practice a little... well, mostly I needed practice in loading the clip and cocking the unloaded (with no clip) gun. It seemed like a natural thing to want to do with my situation. BUT with my instructors help, I do know how to shoot pretty well...so I first started by shooting 2 bullets in the red beautifully. Good start. And I was well on my way. I practiced next a perfect way to load the clip (and spent about 10 minutes on just that) but was still having trouble cocking the gun, which, of course, naturally as any sane person would tell you, I did NOT have the clip in the gun and the safety function was on at this time while practicing this. Just cocking it with one hand against the shelf in front of me as "shooting range front desk"Thomas had suggested to me was a task. And (btw) remember the safety was on, and there was no clip in it. So... then "behind the desk, Thomas", came in and said he was uncomfortable with me being there in the shooting range but then showed me what another person with a disability had done with the same issue. And so it was, I followed his instructions. It was hard and I was learning how to do it but it became obvious that he was less than thrilled that I was there trying it. BUT this, for me, was a practice in doing a really hard one handed operation of a firearm. You see, I always have to think things through as to how I adapt to my personal situation. And I always have done so very successfully and carefully. VERY SUCCESSFULLY AND CAREFULLY IN TIME. And so it was. SAFELY, CAREFULLY I practiced, and practiced cocking the firearm without having the clip in... Well, that is until the owner came into the shooting range. Oh boy... And he was raging! Woo boy was he mad! Maybe he thought I had the clip in but at no time did I have the clip in and I truly know that I was being completely safe. But I guess not. So the takeaway is... All that was needed by the owner, Evan, was an understanding of what I was trying to accomplish. That's all. If it was a concern he could have worked with me at that time and talking to me about it. Maybe he could have told me I wasn't ready to be there on my own. That was a reasonable assessment. (Note to Thomas... you could have said that to me). BUT he (Evan, the owner) let me have it full throttled... no holding back! HE yelled, at me at a scary pitch, (it was really inappropriate) "Give me the gun. You are no longer allowed to shoot here." Of course, I handed over the gun AND the clip and left the shooting range. So... there it is... there were SO many ways to handle that situation differently but he chose to go full on over the top. He was heated! Boy, was he angry! But he didn't need to be. Explaining it would have been better. It's fine I guess but I, at 59, feel like I was just yelled at by my grandmother for getting into her makeup. There were SO many better ways this could have been handled. But it was handled inappropriately, for sure. As is everything in life, we need to understand that other people are dealing with issues and concerns that we have no way of understanding and there is a way of dealing with these issues in an appropriate manner. Love, empathy and consideration goes a long way. Big fail on the part of the owner and staff. By the way, just thought I ought to add this... the customer service sucks, too (except for Dave behind the counter at the shooting range)...at least he has manners... Thomas, who was behind the shooting range desk was absolutely obnoxious and rude. He huffed... mad that I had disturbed him. First words out of his mouth was "I'm trying to doing something for my boss." Anyway, on the previous visit Dave was there. Very nice guy. I went over to the retail side while waiting for Dave to finish up with another customer and I have NEVER been treated so rudely. Do they even want business? Maybe it's because I am female but I would like to think that wasn't the reason but who knows?! Well, they're not getting my business anymore... ever! Go at another place.... please! I just love these guys now that Scott & Company are gone. Actually I bought my first pistol from Moss at Moss's Gun Shop in Stamford are practiced at Doc's Range where the DMV building now resides I think. This range has friendly knowledgeable staff and instructors and even provide loaners if you want to try new pistols or sights. Prices are reasonable for shells and gear and I think they also have a rifle area though I have not practiced on that side. I recommend this facility read more

Went last month for 2-day certification course with a friend. The course began at 5:00pm on a weekday. We arrived into the parking lot at 5:07pm due to traffic and not being familiar with the area. Upon getting out of the car, a man yelled to us, "are you here for the course?" "Yes" Then he YELLED, "YOU'RE LATE!!" then "HURRY UP!!" as he stormed inside to let us in. Turns out he's the owner Evan. NOT at all the way to speak to a customer. I'm not saying he was abrasive, I'm telling you he YELLED as if we were DOGS. There was more ineffective and unprofessional communication over the course of the 2 days, but I'll leave this here. Not a good way to begin this experience. Be aware. I'm an avid shooter both handguns and long guns as well as archery. I've been hunting both with firearms and archery since 1984. Since that time I have been to many shooting ranges both indoor and outdoor. A week ago I decided to try Fairfield County Firearms range for the first time, and I'm glad I did. I found the staff to be very friendly and helpful, Dave in the range area is a super nice guy and a pleasure to strike up a conversation. I went for a second round at the range and shot 150 rounds, great fun, and the range is what it is, a shooting range, and it kept up well, and I have no complaints. The range is no better, nor is it worse then any other shooting range, I haven't ventured into the rifle range yet, but I will soon. After my range time, I checked out the store to see if the complaints and the few bad review were valid. No!... not at all! I was greeted first by a nice young lady and I explained I was just looking and they welcomed me. A minute later I was welcomed by a nice gentleman behind the counter and I explained I just want to look, he welcomed me and told me to ask for any help. I then asked it I could check out a handgun, mostly because I wanted to check out the sites mounted on it. He was more then willing to show me the gun and spent a good amount of time with me explaining the in's and out's of this certain of gun site. Soo! with all that being said, I will continue to go to Fairfield County Firearms. Thanks everyone at FCF for welcoming me. read more

The rudest customer service I have ever had to deal with, whoever is on the other end of the phone should never work in a customer facing position. Entirely unwilling to be asked basic questions about their services, and rather than giving a simple answer to what was - for any normal and fully-cognitive person - a simple question, he instead threw a hissy fit and gave me immediate attitude. If you are going to be so unwilling to entertain guest clients or even provide them with basic information about your business, just make it members only and save everyone the waste of breath that dealing with your employees proved to be. One star is fully gratuitous, as would be 0 stars if possible. Fire whoever answers the phone and next time hire someone who wasn't born in a barn. He requires lessons in basic human communication, let alone customer service. read more

A messy store and range, rude people and the worst facility I have ever seen in my adult lifetime. Go somewhere else or save your money.

I guess I am going to give them an OK. As others have noted, sometimes the employees are not the most outgoing and friendly on the gun store side. I think this is trait with gun people. Seen it at every other store I have been in. But once you start chatting with them its FINE! I have no problems on the range side, but then I go mid-week. I get checked in, go shoot and get checked out. With some pleasant conversation. No issues. I will agree that the cardboard backers on the long range are beat to sh*t and should be kept in better shape. I prefer to shoot on the short range. there is always a ton of brass on the floor. I guess they clean once a day. Range time is pricey, so I always feel I have to shoot fast. This is bad as I am a new shooter and would prefer to take my time. I'd like to see some sort of membership plan, where I could come in and shoot once a week for as long as I wanted. Hey, this is right in the middle of densely populated Southern Fairfield county. I am happy that I even have a place to go! Do you know what the rents must be right off route 7 and route 1? So I am not going to ding them too much on the pricing. read more

Tried out this range after getting our permits. Our class instructor suggested that we try a few guns to get the feel of it before making a purchase. So we decided to do so. We were 2 people sharing a lane for 30 minutes: we rented one pistol and bought a box of 50 38's. We were also charged for 2 targets. One target flew off after 5 shots so my husband had to leave the area and talk to an employee. The employee suggested that we bend the top of the target to fit more securely on the clip. The clip to secure the target is flimsy like a binder clip from STAPLES and we struggled to get the target to stay on. I looked at my watch when we were handed everything and when we walked finished I said, "20 minutes". The person in the store said, "25 minutes". It cost us almost $70. Pricey. read more

Archery range is a joke. It's just a long storage room full of boxes and other random items, including a pistol just lying out in the open. They don't tell you the price ahead of time, and turns out it's $20/hour to use the storage room. The typical rate in CT is around $5/hour, like at Hall's arrow, which has returning targets for $10/hr. $20 to use a storage room is such a rip-off it's predatory. read more

I went there for the range alone and only dealt with the one middle-aged attendant there, but he was professional, patient, and friendly. They have a very big selection of rentals which is perfect for trying guns you would potentially like to buy. I haven't gone shooting much so I really don't know how their prices compare to other places nearby, but I had a blast. read more

Total waste of my time. The staff is extremely unhelpful and inattentive and sadly lacks knowledge of CT Gun laws...which is quite scary. I have been to all 3 sporting shops in lower Fairfield and found these the least helpful. Every question I asked was met with resentment. Would not recommend. I was ignored by the owner when I initially approached the counter with questions. Without looking up from his PC he pontes down the counter mid question to the 2 guys who looked like they had not showered in days and said they'll help you. I asked a few questions and got inaccurate answers. When I finally wanted to make a purchase they were nowhere to be found. The owner yelled repeatedly his employees to come to the counter to help me and the other gentleman in the shop rather than discuss their lunch. Total circus. They don't fully know the laws and certainly don't understand customer service. Don't just take my word, looks at all the Cust Svc comments on Google. Many of which identify the owner himself providing the poor service. read more

By far the worst gun store or any store I've ever been to for that matter, i went into their store to do a firearm transfer with another gentleman i met on armslist, they told me that they do transfers and charge $50, which we were willing to pay, however they said they were too busy and didn't want to do it because its a "process" and they had a "line of customers", i looked around the store and saw literally one other customer, i guess to them thats a "line." They told us to go do the sale on our own and gave us the DPS-3 forms (the forms werent even usable because their store name was already printed in the purchaser section of the form, thanks a lot) and asked us to leave their store and go do our transaction elsewhere. All we wanted was to do a simple pistol transfer and were ready and willing to pay the $50 fee and they basically said they didnt want our business. They were completely rude about it and acted like we werent welcome in their store. This was my first and LAST time in their "store" horrible customer service. If you live in the fairfield area and you are looking for a great gun store experience, make the extra 35min drive and go to Greyson Guns in Orange or TGS Outdoors in Branford, its worth the extra drive. read more

They are the most RACIST, RUDE, INCONSIDERATE, DISGUSTING set of assholes I have ever encountered inside any business. The guys behind the counter on the gun store side immediately tried to run us out of the store upon arrival. One of them (short man) asked me what I wanted because they close in an hour. I told them I had a few questions and I wanted to make a purchase and It shouldn't take long. A tall man then came to assist me. He was very abrupt and short with me. He didn't want to answer any of my questions. I was finally ready to purchase a firearm and when it came time to complete the paperwork, the man yelled at me and said I couldn't purchase with a NYS driver's license. I didn't even take the license out of my wallet. He just happen to see it in my wallet. I tried to tell him I was a CT resident and had a CT state ID, but he did not want to hear me. He never gave me a chance to speak and kept yelling that I could not buy a firearm. I already have several firearms which I purchased in CT with my CT state ID, but he would not know that because he never gave me the opportunity to speak. He was very rude and had no knowledge of CT gun laws. It was evident he was mad that I was an African American man trying to purchase a firearm. He was very meant to me from the moment I walked into the door. I would never ever go there again!!! STAY AWAY!! read more

[this place was formerly Hillers Sports] Ive been going to this range for years, before they changed hands and spent thousands there on ammo, guns and especially range time. It used to be Ok but has gone downhill hard in the last year. Steel case ammo is no longer allowed in the range. I asked why and the fellow at the counter said "the recyclers wont take it". which is ridiculous. They sell all the brass left on the floor after collecting it and all you have to do is run a magnet over it and the steel jumps right out and you can toss it. I asked why they dont just magnet it up like every other range (ive seen the magnet in the corner there) the guy said "Like I have time for that?". WHAT. it takes one minute and no ones doing jack shit there anyway. WTF. I offered to clean up myself and he said no to that as well. Steel case is the most affordable ammo there is. Brass is damn near double the price and if it wasnt for steel I and a lot of other people could hardly ever go shoot at all. Prices for range time (and everything else basically) are over priced and the range is always filthy. The targets are almost never refreshed and the cardboard backers on the long range are always shot in half or flat out missing. The electronic system in the newer range is very nice though. Service is either passable or just terrible/rude. never had "good" service there. you basically have to either stand around and wait for someone to check you in/out of the range or go fetch a guy, who is usually just standing around doing nothing anyway. most of the staff is super apathetic and not friendly or courteous at all. A lot of my friends have been there and just walked out after getting no help after 30 mins or so. CT is super anti-gun So I get that its one of the few places to go, but that doesnt mean you can jack prices up and be assholes. Seems nothing improved with the new management/owner. read more

Walked in this am, first time visit and last. Two separate sides - right for shooting range, left for sales. Only one person working each side. There was a line for the range, but I was interested in purchasing a pistol. The one guy behind the counter never looked up, he was helping another person but never acknowledged myself or the other people that came in. I started looking at what they had to offer, all guns were in cases - which were packed - sometimes too much of something is not a good thing. You couldn't tell what was used and what was new. Those marked new looked used, you could see wear marks on them. As I walked by the one employee he again ever looked up, greeted me or said boo. I left and went to Levine's and then came back. STILL nothing, totally absorbed into what ever he was doing, and not a single other employee there to assist. Well you can consider this sale(s) gone for good. I will be buying and shooting elsewhere. read more

A great range. I've been going here on and off since before Hiller took over. Both long and short ranges are in decent shape. Range officers watch the monitor from time to time, but I've seen really dangerous behavior by shooters go unnoticed and uncommented. Go during the week and generally there's no wait for a lane. I'd avoid weekends when things can get jammed up. Unlike some other ranges in CT, they don't require you buy their overpriced ammo as long as you bring brass-cased/non tracer. Be careful to sweep brass away before unpacking your weapon, as range etiquette is poor and people do not generally clean up after they're done. Not cheap, and the computerized target carriers are a nuisance, but the location is great and the roof doesn't leak on rainy days (like so many other ranges). Never used the rental weapons and I've never seen one being cleaned after returned, so take your chances. Remember your training if you get a ftf or jam, clean up your brass and be curteous and we'll all be just fine. read more
