If you love this joint, hey, more power to ya. They've been in biz for many years, so who am I to tell you otherwise? But... ...this was overall, the worst Lebanese food I've eaten. My dinner companion stated: "Don't piss on my leg and tell me it's raining garlic paste." Without a doubt the WORST garlic sauce. Did they run out of the good stuff and sub creamy Italian dressing??? Wow. Really, really bad. The Good: *Salad greens were fresh and chopped nicely. *Mint in the fattoush, definitely a star for that! The Bad: *Hummus from a can? Sure tasted it! Awful! *They ran out of beef and lamb. Huh? *Skimpiest portion of pita bread EVER! Not that we needed it for anything, the hummus was practically inedible. Please don't insult me by trying to hide your horrific hummus under a layer of cheap vegetable oil and sprinkling it with paprika. The Ugly: *Why is there a hole in the falafel? Very disturbing. I've passed this place a million times and wondered about it and when we were hemming and hawing about what to get for dinner tonight, I turned to my fellow yelpers and my search led me to Falaffel King, so I decided I'd venture up Woodward to pick up a carry out. I called them and ordered the meat grape leaves dinner, a falaffel sandwich and a side of mjadra and a side of garlic sauce. I got there just before they closed and my order was waiting. It's carry out only, and there were a few other people waiting for food. The guy behind the counter actually asked me how I was doing and was very friendly. The grape leaves dinner came with a small side of hummus, a small fattoush salad and some pickled radish (is that what the bright pink things are) and pepper rings. The falaffel sandwich was big and the falaffel tasty. The mjadra was from the fridge, so I heated it up to room temperature when I got home (how it's supposed to be served). The garlic sauce was great. The prices were definitely reasonable for the amount of food we got and the food very fresh. My only regret is that I didn't know about this place when I worked in the area, because I definitely would have lunched here. read more

Yossi's falafel is still much better, but this place is closer to me, and the sandwiches are cheap, as they should be. for some reason i thought the falaffel king closed about a year ago and i was really sad. apparently i'm just crazy. i don't like shwarma anywhere else. i like other falaffels, but none better. the shwarma is warm and moist (too many dry ones out there) with perfect seasoning that isn't bland and made for white people. the garlic sauce makes me swoon and the pickles are fresh. they make almost as good hummus as i do at home, so i obviously like it. my mom likes this place and she is the queen of shwarma and fatoush. did i mention that they're fast and pretty cheap and the pita is as long as my forearm? love, juston read more

Great lunch at a great price. I'm always impressed by the food here. That's really all there is to it. The falafel and the shawarma are excellent choices. The staff is super friendly and the place is always clean. They have a little bar that you can sit at and eat the tasty wraps at or just grab it and go. I guess the only down side would be that sometimes there are too many people there to find a spot to dine. I guess that's a good sign. They won't be going anywhere anytime soon. read more

They should give the first falafel sandwich away for free to hook people - like a crack dealer. I have a difficult time sitting at home around dinner time knowing that this place exists. I returned for a Chicken Shwarma sandwich. It galvanized my love of this place. Unpretentious, Inexpensive, good solid food, family run, independent. Seriously, what is not to like? And they have Sanpellegrino Limonata which happens to be my favorite soft drink. This is the only mediterranean place I really need. read more

People either love or hate Falaffel King. Most of the dissenters, I feel, are comparing it to the much more famous, and popular Bucharest Grill. Which is fair enough I guess, but I think that everybody should be judged on their own merits. Schwarma, though, is a thing in Detroit! Much like it is with sliders and Coneys, emotions can run hot when it comes to defending your favorite places. The sandwich that I received at Falaffel King was terrific, chocked full of chicken and veggies and pretty cheap coming in at under $5. The staff is a little gruff, which is another criticism of this place, as I found out as the cashier was starting to argue with me about leaving a tip. He caught himself, though and realized just how lame his argument was and how it would hurt him in the end if I capitulated. Personally, I thought that it was more humorous than anything else. I discovered my new obsession this afternoon. FALAFEL KING... I had the Potato Kibbie and with my coupon received a Falafel wrap for FREE!!! It pays to clip coupons. The Falafel was PERFECT, Crispy Wonderful aroma and to my surprise I didn't have to ask for anything it came with spicy peppers, pickled turnips, humous, and shredded lettuce. The Potato Kibbie was a cross between A Knish and Spanish Tapas.. It was my first time having one and it was well worth the trip. I carried out my meal however next time I will enjoy a seat and bask in the flavors of the Middle east right in the Heart of Metro Detroit. read more

The best hummus in town, my daughters and I have taste-tested at least 25 other places in the metro-Detroit, and with a vegan in the family we really work our hummus, babagannouj and falafels. We make it a point to pick up hummus here weekly, and the guys behind the counter are super friendly and nice (Thank you, Sean, Evan ... and (I forget the owner's name, sorry guy!). There was a guy called Mike behind the counter who won me over 5 years ago, with his "go take the food home, bring the money on monday" when I discovered I did not have my wallet in the car after getting a takeout order for nearly $40 at closing time on a saturday. I found that the falafel was just okay. It was a bit dry and on the overcooked side. I've definitely had much better falafels. The food was also on the saltier side. The prices are very reasonable. Perfect suburban date night! We ordered to-go and watched the classic cars cruise along Woodward Ave. The creamiest hummus I've ever had. The most flavorful grape leaves I've ever had. The pickles are INSANE--they blew my mind. My salad was fresh; my Pellegrino soda was the perfect compliment to my meal. The service was impeccable! We were lucky enough to get a free cheese pie after chatting with the staff! Condiments were SO complex and yummy. It's obvious there is love in every bite. Not what i expected. Ordered chicken shawarma plate. Rice was not the almond slivers instead was spiced cumin. Not what i am used too since i spend quite alot of time in dearborn. Shawarma was not cut off a rotisserie cooker and not juicy. No pickles or pickled beets. Garlic sauce was not what im used too. More like ranch dressing with garlic mixed in. Went in for the second time in a week...they were accommodating to changing out the rice on the shawarma dinner for hummous or salad...which are both wonderful - I LOVE a place that lets you substitute without giving you a hard time :) My picky picky picky toddler loved the chicken:) Two cons: the chicken is mostly dark meat (wish it was white meat) and the garlic sauce does taste like ranch :( read more

This is great food with reasonable portions at an accessible price point. The falafel is the best I've ever had. The chicken shwarma is great. The garlic sauce is fabulous. Grape leaves are very good too. I suggest the Vegetarian Sample which will feed 2 people, easily, and includes: tabbouleh, hummus, falafel, grape leaves, pickled veggies and pita, all for ten bucks. This is primarily a take out joint so don't expect 4 star 'wait on you' service. They do brisk business at lunch, but the staff is kind and generous--and more importantly: the food is tasty. The food here is amazing. We ordered a combo for 2, they have very generous portions, the chicken and beef was tender and seasoned to perfection. The combo came with a large salad, a large container of hummus, lots of pita and garlic sauce. Each of those items was delicious. I highly recommend this restaurant, and will be going back. read more
