Hands down the best Mediterranean food in Troy. The quality and taste are always consistent, and I'm never disappointed -- it's become my go-to spot for weekly takeout. The grape leaves, chicken cream chops, and beef kafta are absolute favorites, and their chicken lemon rice soup is the best around. For my meal, I went with my typical order, a falafel sandwich, and I made it into a combo and added raw vegetables and a cup of soup. The falafel sandwich was cut in half, and it was huge! Stopped in for lunch on a weekday and there were a good number of people around, but we were seated right away. Our waitress was very friendly and helpful with recommendations. I had the chicken kabob sandwich(pro tip: ask for it on the Saj bread instead of the regular wrap). The chicken was well flavored and very tender. I also love that they put the pickled turnips in the sandwich. Not many places do that. Adds a lot of flavor. I decided to make it a combo so I added a side fatoosh and humus. The fatoosh was amazing. I'd say probably in my top 2-3 fatoosh salads I've had. The dressing was a little lighter and more refreshing. I'd definitely order this again. The La Saj sampler is a fantastic appetizer to share; however, you may not feel like eating a main course afterwards. Plenty for four people. Contains hummus, baba, tabouleh and raw vegetables. Shawarma was very good. That's always my test choice. Not a huge fan of the crushed lentil soup. My dining partners all expressed a wish to go back again. Always, a good sign. So happy to find reasonable, tasty Lebanese cuisine in Troy! I found out about it while sitting next to the lady at the nail salon who said she was headed there for dinner. Well that made two of us. It was very clean, warmly lit, colorful and family oriented. Although I didn't need them, I thought it was very generous that your dinners automatically come with six warm rolls add a 2 ounce garlic sauce. The people behind the counter were very friendly and helpful with a few even asking if I have been waited on, as I was sitting on the bench waiting for my order. I've reviewed this before and it is still the best middle eastern food in the area outside of Dearborn. We've gone for lunch, gotten takeout out and this visit dined in with our family on a Thursday night. It wasn't very busy so we were seated immediately, which was perfect with two kids in tow. We got the combo for two and a side of hummus. It was perfect for the four of us. We even had some leftovers. The staff were very friendly as always and they have our favorite things: grape leaves, kafta, and shwarma. This place also converted us to like fried kibbee- crunchy, soft, and flavorful (not dry like other places can be). Hummus is creamy and not salty. They make their pita in house in a wood fired oven and they come to your table hot and soft. Overall, a wonderful experience. read more

I've been coming here every week for the last couple of weeks. The service is so fast and friendly - you get a bunch of bread with the best garlic sauce as a free appetizer, and they cook so quickly that by the time you're on the second piece of bread the main course is already out. We really like the feast of meats for two ($38 as of Dec 2024). It's really enough for 3-4 people in my opinion, especially if you eat a lot of bread like we do. The platter comes with a mix of kebabs and shawarma, grilled veggies, rice, and tahini. The seasoning is not too heavy, so you don't get overwhelmed and sick of the taste. We also love the hummus platter here, which comes with an arrangement of fresh vegetables. Cannot recommend this place enough. read more

My spouse and I tried this place for dinner today. We've driven by it in the past and we were curious about it, so decided today was the day to try it out. I am so glad that we did! We came in to a half filled restaurant but were seated almost immediately. Our server was Casey and he was very kind & helpful. He brought us bread and garlic sauce to start off and the garlic sauce was like no other! Thick and very garlicky, I could put it on everything! We decided to get the feast of meats for 2, it came with soup or salad, rice and veggies. The soup we chose was chicken and vegetable, it was a very hearty tomato based soup packed with flavor and very healing! Would be perfect if you had a cold or the flu. Our meal was brought out in a timely manner and holy cow it's a lot of food! Meal for 2 felt like meal for 3-4! All the meat was tender, seasoned well and just cooked perfectly. The vegetables served with the meat complimented it very well. The rice was nice and fluffy, coated in a tomato sauce of some sort, very delicious! We both had a small plate of everything and were left with a lot to take home! Prices are fantastic for what you are given too. La Saj is in the outskirts of Troy, Michigan and occupies most of the first floor of an office building. Because of staff shortages, please note their early closing hours, which will differ during the week. We intended to dine on a Tuesday but they closed at 7pm (last call at 6:45), so we opted for Wednesday when the closed an hour later at 8pm. Dining room is cool, clean and spacious. Service is great, prompt and helpful with suggestions on the more authentic menu items. For example, don't feel the need to get the La Saj Sampler AND additional entrees per person! La Saj Sampler (Small - $31.99), including: - Hommus Dip - a healthy plate's worth, creamy and delicious. - Tabboule salad - a highly decorative salad made of finely chopped parsley, tomato, mint, lemon/lime, onions and seasoning. - Falafel - yes, please. All day. - Grape Leaves, or "Dolmades" - sour grape leaves stuffed with rice and minced meats. Grape leaves were probably too sour - overwhelming the stuffing flavors. - "Labneh" - white cucumber yogurt that can be used as a dip for meats or spread for veggies. - "Baba" - warm toasted bread that look like mini pitas. Easy to munch to much. Pace yourselves. - "Kibbee" - a traditional Lebanese dish, like a bulgur wheat croquette stuffed with ground beef, onions, some pine nuts and spices. This is a must try. - Cheese - small cubes, a Syrian variety (we asked) that lands somewhere between feta and mozzarella. Excellent to try. - Fresh vegetables - a super large plate of raw carrots, cucumber, celery, radish that you can dip to your delight Saji Kafta All natural seasoned lamb and beef - mixed with parsley and onion. You see similar entrees in a lot of Mediterranean restaurants, but what makes this special is a really deep cumin/nutmeg aroma that seems like it's smoked into the soul of the meat. It's utterly incredible and a wonder to taste. The flavors just linger on and on. I was not a fan of the accompanying pickled veggie strips - very sour, so beware. Crushed Lentil Soup Obviously fresh and pureed to perfection. Flavors aren't acute, so you may prefer a dash of salt or two. The cup is a healthy dose, so be sure to factor in your storage capacity. Baklava Not a huge fan of baklava, but they do it well - extremely crispy and warm. You just know it came straight from the bakery. Rice Pudding - with cinnamon sprinkle is SOOOO good, this should be your first choice. It's slightly more watery than custard consistency but it's really the flavoring that blows your mind. This is the ancient equivalent of modern boba treats. You may even want two for yourself because the helping is 'individually-sized". Turkish Coffee - to end the night here is absolutely satisfying. They pour the java from a traditional antique-looking coffee pot and serve in cute espresso cups. Food quality is elite level here and I would definitely agree that this is elite Mediterranean food - better than anything I've tasted in California. That's a wrap. read more

So, my coworker was having her birthday luncheon, and she chose this restaurant to eat at. She's Lebanese, and obviously loves Middle Eastern Food! I've never been here before, but one of my other coworkers has. Walking in, the place has ample seating and is nicely decorated. Unfortunately, due to the windows, it was a bit colder then we would have liked. We were given menus by the server and we each got something different. Interesting enough, some of the tables have a QR code for an electronic menu. Ours did not, but we wanted paper menu's anyway. I went with the Falafel and hummus lunch plate since I was hungry, but not starving. I wanted to make sure that the Falafel was green on the inside, because it tastes way better then the ones that are brown. Server said yes it is, and I was was like YES thank goodness. Everyone enjoyed their food as did I. Prices here are a bit expensive, but not ridiculous. The hummus was fantastic, as was the Falafel. My only complaint was no sauce came with the falafel, and I had to use the bread from the bread basket to eat the hummus. Was the bread fabulous? Absolutely. We also got garlic sauce for the bread, and I liked it. It had a few extra ingredients in it, which I loved, but my coworker said she prefers just the white garlic sauce better. I stand by my last review where the vegetarian dish I ordered had meat in it. Thought I'd give them one more try because I used to love them. According to Yelp, they are open until 9pm on Friday's. The shawarma was fresh and packed with delicious moist chicken. The hummus was the perfect size for a lunch! I've been largely a takeout customer since they opened this location. The food is very good. The majadra and the spicy hummus are notable. That's the good news. Their portion sizes have shrunk considerably since Covid. A large hummus is barely the prior size of the prior small. I ordered 4 large hummus' and 2 taboulli's, and we were given 6 pitas. We asked for more, and they said it would be extra.........as 6 is all you get per order.......no matter what you order or what size your order. Really? A year and a half later, so time to update this review! I've been to La Saj maybe 4 or 5 times at this point. My boyfriend and I went yesterday - you really can't beat the $4.99 chicken kabob sandwich deal, which also comes with their fresh bread and garlic, as well as some sort of tomato sauce (tasty, but too spicy for me). Most of the time, service is good, especially compared to my first time here. He ordered some Turkish coffee yesterday - which, for coffee drinkers, is supposed to be awesome - and it took a while to make, but at least three different servers came up to us and said it was "on the way." Total bill yesterday with a cup of the Turkish coffee and two chicken kebob sandwiches: like $12. Very affordable. I really like the interior too - it's always clean, as are the bathrooms. They seem to do a great takeout business as well, so maybe one day I'll order a sandwich to-go. The sandwiches are very tasty, as well, and yesterday they had radishes in them too, I think; otherwise, they are traditional and have the garlic paste, pickles, and chicken, or whatever meat you order. Definitely give this place a try if you haven't been - they do excellent Troy Restaurant Week deals too (usually about $8-9 for a 3-course lunch, and $15 for dinner which includes a glass of wine). read more
