this review is only for the Pho....we were really looking forward to being able to get good Pho within walking distance but were pretty disappointed...the broth had very little taste...having lived in Seattle for a year i used to eat Pho all the time and it became one of my favorite cheap dishes, cant beat a $6.95 Lunchtime Pho! This one was $10.00 and had no taste...it did have lot's of beef of good quality, but the broth was like water...I have no idea what the other dishes are like, apparently quite good according to other reviews here...we will be back to try the other dishes, but will pass on the Beef Pho.....perhaps we will try the chicken or the pork one (wasn't on the menu, perhpas it was a special) so far the best Pho we have had in brooklyn was at Nha Toi...(but I hear one must be careful not to upset Fred the owner, although he has always been fine with us) read more

Nice Vietnamese restaurant in Brooklyn! I could safely say that I was in Brooklyn solely to go here, and needless to say it did not disappoint one bit. I find Falansai to be a very interesting take on food, culture and New York in general. The food is great (the fact that their menu changes often is another huge plus if one wants to come here often), the food by principle is meant to be shared (family style), the very setting of the restaurant is a tribute to contemporary New York, and the people are diverse and super warm. On top, it's not even expensive. I'm really glad I got to come here. Tried the dad's fried rice and the blazed & glazed, in addition to the Tom Nguyen coffee. Very close to a subway station too, so grab your reservation and go go go! read more

Went here for lunch while visiting Brooklyn and was not disappointed! We got the papaya salad to split based on a yelp recommendation and that was a great decision. The salad was light, fresh, and a little spicy if you added the jalapeños on the side. We each got Bahn mi, I got the lemongrass tofu and he got the bahn mi cari (curry). His was more flavorful while mine was lighter. Both tasted amazing, with freshness and crunch from pickled vegetables and avocado on mine. The tofu was pressed and cooked very well so no texture issues. The sandwich was giant so we were able to take some to go as well! We also tried Vietnamese coffee there (great) and Beerlao dark lager (really great). The server was extremely friendly, he brightened our day and also gave us more information about Beerlao in general so we could find it later. read more

My friends and I visited Falansai last Friday night and was hoping to get some delicious pho in this cold weather before we head to a concert at the Brooklyn Mirage. Unfortunately, we left the restaurant feeling unsatisfied due to our lackluster experience and mediocre (terrible?) food. Earlier that evening, I called to make a reservation at 7:30pm and were seated immediately upon arrival. We started off with 2 imperial rolls, 1 summer rolls and the papaya salad for appetizers. The imperial rolls and papaya salad were decent, but the summer rolls has the thickest rice wrapper we've ever eaten in our lives. It was extremely chewy to the point that my friend couldn't finish her appetizer. Another friend and I ordered the beef pho for our entree, while my other 3 friends decided to stop ordering due to their not-so-great appetizer experience. Both of our pho noodles arrived in lukewarm temperature.... Um how am I supposed to soak the bean sprouts and other condiments in lukewarm soup and hopes that it will be cooked/brings out the flavor? So I sat and waited for my beef to soak in the lukewarm soup, hoping it will be less raw by the end of the dinner. I then tried the pho broth, and it lacks flavors to the point that I could call it bland and it tastes like they garnished cinnamon near the end in attempt to create this 'pho broth'. We couldn't even finish our food at this point - we just paid and left. Sorry - despite we were serviced nicely by our waiters, I couldn't vouch for any of the food that is being served at Falansai. Pho is the spiritual dish in Vietnamese cuisine and this Vietnamese (or so-called) establishment failed to deliver this dish miserably. If you're looking for authentic or even decent pho experience, I suggest you visit elsewhere. read more

This place is in the middle of nowhere (you're going to think you've taken a wrong turn - you haven't!), but it's so worth the detour. We had two variations of the globetrotter pho. My friend got the mole, which was amazing! I got a spicy peanut one that tasted mostly like pad thai, which was also good. I thought the mole had more depth and was a more interesting combination. We had no difficulty getting a table and service was good. I'd definitely be back to try more options! read more

I am a huge fan of Blue Hill, so when I saw that Eric Tran (Falansai's Chef and owner) worked under Dan Barber, I became obsessed with the idea of dining at Falansai. Add that to the fact that one can only feel deep respect for Eric Tran's professional background and trajectory, and it was a no-brainer: I made a reservation and was overjoyed at the thought of dining here. I lack the words to express how disappointed I was (not by the food, we never got to really try it). All I can say is that the two male servers were so blatantly rude, disrespectful and arrogant that we left after our appetizer (but still left a tip because times are hard for everyone). Worst part: they seemed quite amused by how they treated us. Cute spot, although a bit out of the way. They have a happy hour offering appetizers for $4, beers for $3, and house wine for $5 before 7pm. However, they only give you 1/2 size of the normal appetizers, so the only convenience is being able to try more for the same price, NOT that they're actually cheaper. I came with a group of friends and was able to taste several small and bigger dishes. Unfortunately, nothing called my name. - Cassava shrimp fritters: tasty, but very little shrimp in a huge piece of batter. - Summer rolls: ok. Nothing special. - Autumn rolls: boring and pretty bland. - Pork imperial rolls: better than the above; at least they had some flavor. - Papaya salad: underwhelming. - Pumpkin and curry: the pumpkin was very thick and way too starchy. It was hard to put down. - Seafood pho: very plain, barely any taste. The seafood itself was too chewy. - Braised pork belly: the meat was way too dry. - Catfish claypot: if had a funky flavor. Came here for a quick lunch, and I was not disappointed! Service was quick and very friendly, and everyone enjoyed their entrees. I had the grilled chicken over vermicelli noodles- the chicken was cooked perfectly and made for a delicious yet light meal. The fresh rolls weren't as flavorful as I expected and had something dried in the middle that was a weird texture, but otherwise it was a great meal. A couple of friends and I decided to come here for nice Sunday dinner. I read great things online and wanted to try it for myself. My friends live only about 2 blocks away so it was great. We got inside and it hit me... It wasn't the smell of food cooking away in the kitchen, but the HEAT. It's really hot inside. All I saw is one window in the far corner open, but it felt like a sauna inside. I was looking around at the decor and a couple of ceiling fans won't kill it. Once you go inside, you will notice how simple, clean and very welcoming it is. Faint blue walls with white lights hanging. It's a big change from what you see around the neighborhood with all the hardwood and exposed brick. We ordered a bunch of bites to share. To start we had the Imperial Rolls (Cha gio). These were really flavorful. Really light and crisp, a perfect starter. Next was the Green Papaya Salad (Goi du du). This consisted of green papaya, shrimp with mint and other Vietnamese herbs and crushed peanuts. You get a generous amount of shrimp and not just a couple. It was a hot day and usually papaya salad cools me down, but it was room temperature. It was flavorful and you can taste the papaya, lime and a hint of fish sauce. The only thing that was lacking was the heat. I saw no chilis in it and wasn't asked if we wanted them in. So i'm guessing this is how they serve it. Entrees of the night were the Five Spiced Chicken (Ga ngu vi huong) which was really good. It's chicken breasts thats marinated in Five Spice and served with a Tamarind Fish Sauce. A perfect balance of sour and salty. Next was the Shaking Beef (Bo luc lac) which is Wok sautéed cubes of tender filet mignon served with lime, salt and pepper dipping sauce. Really tender meat! Last was the Clay pot Catfish (Ca kho to). This was cuts of catfish in a sweet sauce. I just wanted to put a whole bowl of rice in the pot and eat it up. So good. Our meal basically was a tasting of what they had to offer. It was really good and I can't wait to come back and try the rest of the menu. Everything here was excellent-- attentive service, lovely atmosphere (casual and comfortable but elegant), reasonably priced wine list with a lot of interesting options to choose from, and unexpected, flavorful dishes. I came here for dinner with 3 friends and we decided to go for the four course tasting menu which ended up being a great deal-- it feels like they gave us well more than four dishes. We had lobster and tuna tostadas, shrimp toasts, duck neck, grilled chard, sausage and ribeye green curry, and fried rice + pickled veggies and condiments to accompany the meal. Each dish was creative, unpretentious, and flavorful. I keep thinking about the chard-- I could drink a cup of that broth. We sat in the beautiful back garden area. All dishes were very bland, which is not characteristic of Vietnamese cuisine. Great service but so disappointing that they have so few vegetarian and vegan options now. They used to have lots of vegetable dishes to choose from and this was one of my favorite spots in the neighborhood. It doesn't make sense that in this day and age with all we know about meat consumption + pollution, they are incorporating more meat into every dish and not less. It seems like some dishes use animal fat just for the heck of it when they could easily do without.
