We made the reservation specifically during restaurant week to try this spot. When we arrived on a Saturday night, we were told that they do not honor the restaurant week menu on Fridays and Saturdays. No biggie, but wish we had known in advance. We had made reservations for the kitchen counter seats. Thinking we would be able to watch the masters at work. However, the seating is too low and you cannot see into the kitchen. So there's that. The service was really lovely. Constantly checking in for more water or if we needed anything. We started off with their Mezcal cocktail, which my husband loved. And I had a flight of sake. I wasn't in love with any of them. But they were all palatable. We shared the Shishido peppers which were absolutely amazing. Highly recommended. We asked for some soy sauce on the side and find that an occasional dip of the pepper really brings out the flavor. We also shared the Wagyu Tataki. The presentation is lovely as it is for all the dishes. However, I found it slightly chewy. But the accompaniments were outstanding. We also shared a 14 ounce 30 day dry aged New York strip. Presented beautifully. Cooked perfectly medium rare. Accompaniments and sauces. Also terrific. However, we did not find that the steak had any actual flavor. But it was smooth and easy to chew. I had celebrated my birthday at this place twice. I have head about praises about this place so I picked this place a few years back and came back again this year. I love this cozy place with great food and extensive wine list. We ordered some Japanese appetizers. This time we had Wagyu steak tataki. Well-seasoned and tasted so good. We picked this because the Wagyu steak entree was expensive and we wanted to tasted Wagyu with a lower-price option. It didn't disappoint us. We ordered the porterhouse steak. Though it wasn't Wagyu, it still super yummy. The temperature is just as what we ordered, medium rare. And the sauces on the side were awesome. A little bit Japanese favor! The service was great--our waiter gave excellent recommendations, had no issue modifying items for allergies, and checked in often. The food was everything, and the drinks were great too. After seeing foodgasm worthy photos of my friend's meal on instagram, Salt + Charcoal has been on my list of "Want to Try" for the past three years. I'd been saving it for a special occasion as my #1 top priority and that occasion finally arose as I was turning 34 this year and my beloved partner booked us a reservation for 7 PM on a crisp Saturday evening. The place comfortable seats about 25 patrons with mixed styles of tables and booths, and this lucky birthday boy was delighted to share the latter with the love of his life. We were seated in one of the booths along the main avenue with flower pots in interesting vases lining the window. The waitstaff all had a hip modern Japanese flair to their dress, and it was clear this was a moonlighting job for these models/actors. There was an extensive alcohol list with many sake's to choose from (yum) as well as the full dinner menu and specials. When shiso shows up on the menu, I immediately get it so I went with the Shiso Mojito while my partner went for a licorice-tasting cocktail I forgot the name to; both were well mixed and interesting. We took a while to choose from the extensive food menu since everything sounded good, but eventually decided on the Japanese Wagyu Roll (so we could have a taste of their Wagyu), the Yellowtail Roll for more shisho leaf goodness, the rib eye special for one which came with their signature wasabi cream sauce, a side of cheese fries and their unique uni filet mignon steak which I'd heard so much about and to which my friend said was an absolute must. Wagyu Roll -- I was worried the truffle oil would be overpowering but it worked really well in the roll. The flavours all worked well together. Although I understand the point of the crunchy potatoe flakes for texture, they were a bit distracting in the roll and I could done without them. Yellowtail Roll -- again, really well-balanced and tasty; the shiso leaf helped cut the potential heavyness of the fish and crabstick, but overall, really well balanced. I liked this one a lot. I'd definitely order either roll again, and might just come back out to have them. I was already getting full at this point, sharing these rolls with my partner, but luckily we had drinks and the steaks took a while to come out. Ribeye special -- medium-rare was the correct choice. The steak on its own was really flavourful and that 60 day (?) aging really worked wonders for it, even if it wasn't wagyu. It doesn't matter though, it was incredibly tasty and I'd come back for this again 110%. Uni Filet Mignon -- I really really wanted to love this...but it was too much. The filet mignon sits on the bottom with a layer of ikura (salmon roe) with uni on top of that. It sounds great in practice, but is way too much umami at once. The uni and ikura really overpower the dish, so much so that you can't taste the beef at all. I actually had to spread it off to try and see what the meat tasted like (delicious, obviously, but not as good as the rib-eye). The bed of watercress was a good compliment that gave lightness to the dish since everything else was so strong flavoured. Overall, I'm eagerly awaiting another opportunity to come back to Salt + Charcoal, but I'll be more deliberate about the choice of meat next time. read more

We unfortunately went on a Sunday night Wen they do not stay open till midnight so my friends had to get some sushi to go for me. I chose assorted sushi and the uni I was excellent and the other tuna and white fish were OK. The portions were small and for $42. It was quite underwhelming. Maybe if I sat down and had the meal I would've enjoyed it more than to go boxes. But my two friends that dined there since they got there early enough they both seemed a bit disappointed with their meals and do not plan to go back. Believe the hype. I was so very pleased with my experience at Salt+Charcoal! It started with the ambiance. What a wonderful looking restaurant. We were taken downstairs to a very intimate room. Ordered the porterhouse for 2, two sushi rolls, tuna tartare and S+C baked potatoes. The porterhouse was a bit underwhelming and was not as flavorful compared to other steaks I've had. Just wow! We stopped in before a movie for a quick snack and a drink, not expecting much. Instead, we had a great experience here. Drinks were good, service professional and the food was excellent. We shared the wedge salad, which I am still dreaming about, and a salmon sushi roll, which was different then any roll I have tasted - more complex somehow? Anyway, it was light and delicious. 5 stars! Another great restaurant experience in Williamsburg. I'm not a red meat or steak eater although restaurant clicks.com rates them #1 in steaks and they are rated in front of Peter Lugar. The main floor has booth seating, regular seating and a full bar. There is outside seating with heaters for the cold weather. They also have seating down stairs which has a nice room with a full wine selection that you can request on the weekends. It's also available for private parties and it has a full sound system and disco ball. Service was AWESOME!! our waiter Tee was on point and what I liked most was that he explained all the dishes the came out and what to expect in flavor. He also explained how they were able to achieve the flavor. It's a comfortable space and all of the wait staff were exceptional. They work well together and hep each other so no customers are left hanging. Again, staff and service was great. I can't see anyone not having a great time. We ordered just the right amount of food. Started with the charcoal grilled edamame which had a smoke flavor. It was definitely different than any edamame I have had in the past. The best part was the crab cake, fresh lump, home made with no fillers just crab. It is accompanied by a Wasabi cream sauce that has a nice kick. We ordered 3 rolls, the Japanese Wagu roll, the Shrimp Crunch roll and the Damon roll. All of them had a flavor of their own. Good size portions and each roll had a distinct flavor. I decided to come here for my birthday dinner with the bf. This is a quaint little restaurant on the corner - it's not a huge space but it's put together well. Excellent service - very attentive, informative & polite. Food was great! The steak with that herb butter was everything. I loved the wagyu roll which was one of their specials for the day. Most wine bottles were decently priced- I ended up with the only Rośe bottle they had available. I'm glad I was allowed to taste it first. It was nice, loved the way it hit on the nose. My bfs cocktail was delicious and refreshing. Be prepared to spend $$$ because this place wasn't cheap. Especially the wagyu steaks which we did not get because I didn't want to do that to my man's wallet haha. I think it was something like $180 for an 8oz wagyu? And $270 for a 12oz? Maybe I sound cheap but no thank you. Overall, I would come again but only on a special day. Since it was my birthday I allowed myself to be spoiled. Sharing the steak was a great idea especially because it's summer and its hard to stuff yourself. Unique and classy with incredible food! Came here on Valentine's Day which is much different experience than a regular meal, so some the anecdotes may not apply, but I would definitely come back her for a date night meal. The restaurant let us know that Valentine's Day was going to be ore-fixe at $160 a person without drinks. Now I wasn't planning on spending much more on a fancy meal but sticker shock went away when we were sat and given the menu. Each course was SO interesting from flavor to the presentation, and the 8oz steak was a delight. The sushi was a notably delicious bite and the matcha cake was also quite stellar. The wait staff were very quick, we even out paced the couple next to us who were sat first, and that couple decided to have a problem with it, which the staff were so friendly and apologetic (though it wasnt there fault). As for the food, me and my group of friends ordered a bunch of appetizers and steaks and ate it family style. We ordered the ankimo ponzu (monkfish liver), crabcake, uni wagyu beef roll, Japanese wagyu truffle roll, organic grilled veggies, cheese fries, the uni filet mignon steak, the porterhouse steak and the NY strip steak. Perfect for a special occasion! I came here on a Saturday night for dinner to celebrate a late Valentines Day and I thoroughly enjoyed my meal. I got a room in the wine cellar and it was an intimate setting with dim lighting. The service was great and the waiter explained every dish well. It did take a bit, around 30 minutes, for the steak to be prepared, but we got starter dishes and cocktails in the meantime. I ordered the following dishes: * 30 Day Jyukusei Porterhouse Steak - 9/10 - The filet side was so tender and melted in your mouth. The strip side was a bit chewy and had more tendons, so not as good but still delicious. The dry rub on the outside gave the steak a lot of flavor and the house made sauces were delicious. * Japanese Wagyu Truffle Roll - 10/10 - This was my favorite dish! I loved that they considered different textures for this roll. The soft tuna and wagyu paired so well with the crispy potatoes. I was worried because truffles are usually too strong and overpower other flavors. On this dish, the truffle flavor was apparent, but light. * Cheese Fries - 8.5/10 - I liked the presentation of this dish with the melted cheese spilling over the side of the container. I also liked that they used a mixture of regular and sweet potatoes. It was kind of heavy though, especially when eaten with the steak. * Azabu Whiskey Sour - 10/10 - This drink was not too strong, which I like, and I loved the subtle yuzu flavor. The foamy egg whites on top really elevated it and made it more fun to drink. * Wabi Sabi - 7.5/10 - This drink was ok, but the matcha flavor was a little too bitter for me. I think it needed another sweet element to balance it out. Overall, I had a lovely meal and would love to try more dishes. A wonderful dining experience every time!! I have visited about 4 times so far and one thing about Salt + Charcoal is that it is consistent! This is such an important quality especially for a restaurant to have longevity in the ever evolving New York City restaurant scene. It is the perfect ambiance for a date night or a birthday dinner and even a late night option for a very good drink. There are plenty of seating options available but I recommend making a reservation especially if visiting on a weekend. There is available bar seating, main room, and they have a cellar area in the basement which is my personal seating option since it's more private and this is where large parties are seated. The menu is quite vast with many small plate options and appetizers before you indulge in the main which are meat courses of Japanese steakhouse fair. I usually get multiple appetizers and a few drinks to get started and if still hungry will opt for a main course, alternatively you can order something smaller and then focus on the main which is larger/heavier. The wagyu sushi roll is my personal favorite, and all the wagyu options are highly recommended. Everything is so fresh and high quality you cannot go wrong with it. The staff is very courteous and helpful and assists with any questions you might have. I sipped on the Pineapple Express for most of the night and this is one of my favorite drinks here, especially if you're into a sweeter cocktail. For appetizers we started with fried oysters, crab cake, and miso soup. We ordered the Japanese wagyu roll, shrimp tempura roll, and yellowtail roll. We also tried some of the branzino sashimi. Everything was exceptional but because the portions are large and we were filled up already on them and drinks, we opted not to do mains this time. For mains I do recommend the filet mignon or the wagyu sirloin options. Wagyu is very delicate and soft so they cook it perfectly!!! I have never had such good wagyu before in my life until I visited here. The seafood options such as all the sashimi platters and lobster are also great if you are more into seafood. I did some research on some area places to celebrate the first part of my mom's birthday weekend. I ultimately decided upon S+C because the hotel that we were staying at mentioned that it was rated well and within walking distance. I will admit, upon entrance, I was a little underwhelmed by the decor and not too happy to be seated in a very dark basement... but it was last minute, so I guess I'm happy that I got us in. Btw, you have to book your reservation with a credit card and are charged if less than a 24 hour cancellation, which I understand why (people know how to ruin things), but still I find it off putting. I think that I misunderstood the waiter when he suggested we start with a sparking sake, as we were charged for a $150 bottle! I didn't realize this until we received the check.. I don't know how to feel about this, but maybe it was my fault for not inquiring further.. It was nice, though. On to the food... my mom and everyone really enjoyed their choices.. of course, the caviar taste that my mom has... she orders the wagyu steak--let's just say that market price was marketing lol.. but she loved every minute of it! I kept it light with the yuzu wedge salad... I liked the idea of their take on the classic wedge salad but with romaine, instead of iceberg... topped with parmesan, bacon, sesame cream, and a yuzu dressing, but it was over the top sour... it needs something to balance it out.... my other starter was the wagyu yukke tartare, which was probably the best part of the evening for me...very highly quality beef served with avocado, scallions, egg yolk.. and a side of chips to scoop it all up. My entree was just a sushi roll... I believe tuna avocado.. and I have to say it was completely underwhelming. I've had much better in the shopping mall near my house for much less.. The wait was fresh and very fairly. Even the wasabi tasted fresh! The crab cake was also very good. The wasabi cream sauce was so good. Crab was also so plentiful. I love when crab cakes are filled with crab and not overwhelmed with breadcrumbs. Now for the wagyu, amazing! Wagyu is like butter. It's so smooth and perfectly fatty. All you need is a little salt. Went here for their Valentine's Day prix fixe menu at $160. First off I will say the service was pretty good. From the time you walk in they were very nice. The ambiance is nice, the place is small but you don't feel cramped. The waitress was super nice. And now the food, it started off strong the first few starters were amazing little bite size plates and a soup. Tasted awesome. The reason for the 1 star is the mains, you get to choose one of a few mains and my partner and I ended up waiting over an hour from the third course to the mains. The tables around us who got seated after us were getting their food before us and it left us feeling forgotten. When we did finally say something to the very nice waitress we ended up getting our food and it was cold. The "grilled" veggies were cold the potatoes were ice cold but the steak was phenomenal. My girlfriend ended up getting the lamb chops and got food poisoning from it. Pretty crazy for them to charge so much for food like this. read more
