Hired falling waters to do my entry way. Initially they seemed chafed by limiting them to a $20k budget which I thought was sufficient for adding rocks to few hundred square feet of planted area. Immediately after I had issues with the drip system they installed. Opening up the filter it was clearly plugged with dirt. Rather than addressing the issue they made spurious claims that my valves which have been working for years are too low. It was easier for me to back flush and unclog the system myself which was obviously plugged with dirt from construction. I don't feel like they stood by their work at all. At least than a year out I need follow up work. read more

The finished space looks great and captures the style we were hoping for. Connor and his team were friendly, responsive, and worked swiftly. The whole team has a great eye for design. In hindsight, I suggest confirming key details multiple times, especially as changes are made along the way. Plan for the Finish: Toward the end of the project, the team gets ready to move on, which is understandable with busy schedules. As a result, it can lead some finishing touches (like sprinkler issues and care instructions for new plants) slip through in hand-off. Take the time to identify issues early, raise concerns in order to give their team a chance to address appropriately. Overall, we're really happy with the look and feel of the yard. It reflects the strong design vision that Falling Waters is known for. If you're working with them, just stay proactive on the details and make sure there's time built in to review everything thoroughly at the end. We hired Falling Waters to design and build our backyard landscape and are thrilled with the results! Our experience with Falling Waters has been 100% positive -- beyond anything I could have imagined. I saw Ryan's work at the SD Garden Show. Falling Waters designed, built and is maintaining our landscaping. Can't recommend Ryan and Falling Waters enough. We have a new house so we were starting from scratch. During the design, Ryan really tried hard to take our input into consideration but also come up with original ideas that there is no way we could have thought of alone. We found Falling Waters originally because they were featured in a number of magazines locally (since then they've been featured on HGTV a couple times too!). So a side benefit is that our yard has ended up looking so nice it might get featured on TV or in a magazine! Our project and the subsequent maintenance are not cheap but the money was well worth it. SHORT STORY This review is long overdue, likely because we've been spending so much time enjoying our new yard! Put simply, Ryan, Garrett, and the entire Falling Waters crew did an exceptional job on our front/backyard project. They finished on time (early, in fact) and on budget. We recommend them without hesitation. LONG STORY We solicited bids/estimates from three different firms for our project, including Falling Waters. All bidders were given the same project scope and wish list. Truth be told, we initially selected another bidder for the work, largely due to cost. We quickly learned that this decision was a mistake, as the selected bidder inflated the project cost as we began the design process in earnest. At the end of the day, Falling Waters gave us the best/closest ballpark estimate based on our scope, and their aesthetic aligned well with our ideas for the landscaping. After cancelling with our initial selection, we went back to Ryan and started over. The design process with Ryan and Garrett was wonderful. They listened to our needs and incorporated our ideas, but they also pushed back on areas where they thought a different solution or approach made better sense. They also brought a lot of their own ideas to the table, and many of those ideas are now among our favorite parts of the finished project. Trust the folks at Falling Waters and their judgement - they really are experts and they know what they're doing. We'd be remiss if we didn't mention how meticulous the final plans were - incredibly detailed, down to the placement of each and every plant. Having completed some other renovation work recently, we were somewhat nervous about the transition to the build phase. It's one thing to draw something on paper, but entirely something else to start making those plans a reality. The Falling Waters crew was exceptional in every regard. They always showed up when they were supposed to, and we always knew what they were working on from week to week. The crew was incredibly clean - we had several neighbors comment on their cleanliness during the course of the project. They were also efficient and finished our project earlier than we had anticipated. We did have a small hiccup during the project where a change was made in the field to the original plans (drainage issue). To his credit, Ryan offered to demo the work and deliver on the original design - but we actually preferred the change. Our project concluded a few months ago, and we haven't had any issues; plants are thriving, and all the working elements of the design are functioning well. All told, our experience with Falling Waters was probably the most fun and least stressful of all the various renovation projects we took on for our new house. I gave them a call, talked through my yard project, and they happened to have one of their guys in the area they connected me with for a quick intro. we unfortunately weren't able to do business together due to some strict time constraints on my side. Long overdue review. Hired FWL to do complete redesign of front, side and backyards. Very creative team but with solid, practical ideas to stay within our budget. The whole process was smooth; design to demo to completion. AND most importantly: follow up. A friend recommended I look at Falling Waters Landscape after discovering the designs on Instagram. I called and spoke with the owner Ryan and asked if he would do a project in the Bay Area. He said yes and I confirmed that, if so, I would like to engage. I flew him up to get things going and took him out to dinner to build the relationship (at which time he confirmed his excitement to do the project). Despite agreeing that he wouldn't need a hotel, he tried to charge me expenses for accommodation. When I paid the $700+ in expenses that he asked for, he then declined the project the next day on account of it being in the Bay Area. I told him how frustrated I was, at which point he said that he gave me great ideas and I should be happy. It's almost like he just wanted a free flight to the Bay Area to visit another project. I never post reviews, and certainly not negative reviews, but this was a waste of time and money, and a very poor way to do business. read more

My first experience with Falling Waters was while filming an episode of a television show on HGTV named "Bang for your Buck". I was the featured Realtor on the show and Ryan was a featured designer for one of the back yard spaces. His design ended up winning! I was hooked on his work and style from there. A few months later while filming a 2nd episode, I discovered Ryan had again designed one of the backyard spaces and absolutely killed it again. I knew I could trust Falling Waters with the design of my own backyard and had zero hesitation in hiring them. Ryan exceeded all of my already high expectations. I consider myself to be a pretty creative person but knew that Ryan could take my ideas to the next level and he did. I gave him a budget and he stuck well within that budget. We are hiring Ryan to handle the design of our front yard as soon as tax time is over! read more

My experience is along the lines of the negative review left by Moby C: it involves what amounts to less than straight behavior by Falling Waters. For instance, they damaged our deck while installing the landscaping. Initially, they did not own up to the damage. Finally, after significant stonewalling, they implemented some repair steps. But they left the deck well below its prior state. We had other similarly-troubling issues with them: they tried to cut out early on contracted maintenance; they planted the wrong tree then tried to charge us extra to replace it with the tree actually called for in our plans. Overall, our landscaping looks good, but working with Falling Waters was a difficult, disappointing process. read more

My first contact with another landscape architect in North County was repulsive--the guy was standoffish and acted too busy to even talk about taking on a new client, which was weird because I had never given him any time frame as to when I wanted to start the project. Upon further search, I discovered Falling Waters Landscape on social media, and was excited when I saw they were local in North County/Solana Beach, and further excited when I saw their awesome portfolio. Unlike the other company, FWL was immediately responsive and interested in working together. I emailed them and they immediately set up a free consult to come out and discuss the potential project. Brooks came out to my home and we met for some time discussing my vision for the back and front yard. Because of my initial meeting with Brooks and how it went, I decided to hire FWL to do the design and emailed them a couple of inspo photos. A short time later, they contacted me to come into the office to discuss the project. When they contacted me, I thought I would be coming in to discuss more details and direction, but to my surprise, when I showed up, they had the entire plans prepared for the front and back yard, including a TON of imagery of all of the hardscape, plants, planters, furniture, etc. Even more surprising was how they were able to capture my exact vision! I was totally blown away and impressed that they were able to accomplish this in a meeting at the house and only 2 images. I knew then and there that I needed to hire them to build the awesome design they put together. We had one more meeting to finalize the plans, and I decided to start with the backyard project first, and focus on the front down the road. FWL was awesome from beginning to end. As everyone knows, construction never goes as planned as you run into unforeseen hurdles (in our case a spa that the original builder had built improperly that was totally deteriorating once we could see what was underneath the plaster). Despite this, FWL and its team were always professional, patient, understanding, and kind. They truly cared about the vision and making the end product amazing. They didn't try to cut corners and get out of there quickly but all construction was down to the detail, and if it wasn't (very rare), things were redone. Their team of professionals is one of a kind. We came into contact with so many of their team throughout the months and they are seriously the kindest people!! Ryan, Brooks, Garrett, Ben, Josh, David, Jesus, Frank and many more were amazing. My wife says the same and always felt comfortable around all the team. We never hesitated to talk to them or ask them questions because they felt like friends and family. The end result of the project was just as we envisioned it from the beginning but even better than we could imagine! Such a great and qualified team that knows what they are doing and even more, has the skills to design and construct amazing projects of all kinds (even a custom egg chair swing). I will definitely be hiring them in the very near future to redo our front yard!!! read more

So we have had a different experience with Falling Waters than many. We engaged the firm and set a budget expectation. The initial design was pretty far off from what we wanted given that we gave them clear photos of the design we wanted. That was not a big deal as we had an allowance of design changes available. The bigger deal was that the initial quote was more than double the budget we gave them. That was a big concern. We pushed forward with several design changes to get the design to a place where we hoped it would get to - in the end, we did like the design. We also in the meantime got a second bid on the project from another company. The second company was substantially less expensive but also to be fair had fewer projects under their belt. We shared that the competitive bid was cheaper and by what amount and asked that Falling Water do what they could to reduce their price - we clearly did ask them to meet the competitive bid. We merely asked them to sharpen the pencil to the extent they could. We got a slight revision that evening. We accepted their revision and intended to move forward. We then received another email (on Sunday) that they were backing out of the bid and didn't think they could meet the timeframe or the price they offered and that the project probably wouldn't go well. They said they would call on Monday. Instead of a call, we got another email explaining further that they were rescinding the bid for construction. No calls just a continued email. By this time, I had made two phone calls to the office. Ryan Prange was just being extremely difficult (via email) and to be honest quite cagey. At this point, Ryan has backed out of the construction project and left us with a design that now we don't know for sure is executable (perhaps that is why he has backed out?). We would have never engaged a designer that was not going to execute the construction of a project and now we, unfortunately, have done just that. The net-net of the situation is that we have a 'near' complete design but nothing more and are out several thousand dollars. Fortunately, we got a competitive bid and have another company to fall back on. There are several good reviews and some really bad ones which shows this a bit of a hot and cold type of company. I haven't experienced a business that behaves this way in any of the homes we have owned. I would be wary of this business. read more

This is an awesome company. The owner gets involved in and is a reasonable guy that is willing to work with you and listen to your ideas. They did my pool and back yard which came out amazing and beautiful. I continuously get compliments on it. They also were very helpful in working with other sub contractors I had on the job and resolve an issue we had with another outside contractor. We are getting ready to redo our landscaping at another property and have already contacted Falling Waters. Cant wait to see what design they come up with for this second job! In my opinion the best landscape designers in the area. Their originality and creativity are second to none. Working with Ryan was a pleasure. He was always very courteous and professional. The crew are always on time and on point. Tony did a fantastic job on my irrigation and the hardscape looks great. It has been a year and a half since my project and my yard looks better and better as time goes on. Ryan knows his stuff. He knows what will look good on project completion, but also how different plants will grow into maturity. This is a company I will definitely be working with on my next landscape project.
