My experience with Tomas and Family Fences has been amazing! They came out last year and gave accurate estimates for a cedar fence with black steel posts. I find it a great value knowing that prices were in flux for birth steel and wood at the time. It's important to note that wood like cedar will dry and shrink and even warp a bit; that's what a lot of people like about natural cedar. He recommended a great guy to come and stain for us as well. The customer service has been amazing too! See, cedar gates will change shape over time and so the latch may need adjusting. They came out this year (a year after install) and adjusted for me. Hired this company to finish the fence in my yard. The work was done relatively well. But after the work was done I called them several times to come back and lower the gates to help keep the critters out of the yard. The lady that answers the phone is always very nice and tells me Thomas will call me back. But he never does!! Really like this company a lot. Tomas is a true professional and great to work with. We used them several years ago to fix a broken fence and they were able to come out rather quickly and fix for a fair price. More recently we were looking to add some fence and he came out and provided the most competitive quote among 4 different companies. Not only that, but I asked him to check our existing aging fence to see if we needed any repair work and he was extremely honest in telling us we don't need any new fence. Our back fence had some rotted posts and Family Fences suggested we replace the bad posts, rather then the entire fence as the wood was in decent shape. We also got a quote to replace our sideyard fence, and they priced the projects separately so I could share with the neighbor with whom we share the fence.They came out for an initial estimate, a revised estimate and a final review the week we scheduled the work to confirm details and materials needed. We added on a few upper and lower boards to the repaired fence so it looks nice near the new fence, and they accommodated readily and brought the right supplies. For the replacement fence, the existing front gate was crooked and wouldn't hang properly so the crew called me outside to discuss it. We opted to build a new gate and they did so the same day, and even had new hinges and a handle in their truck so we didn't have to use the old ones or delay the work by going out to buy hardware. Good communication, nice adjustment. The crew did the work in 2 days, and did a nice job on all of it: fence, posts and gates.They also cleaned up, asked where I wanted the dirt they dug from the post holes, moved the bricks and rocks back when they were done and cleaned up the site nicely. The guys were courteous, efficient and communicated well when they were on site. There was a little confusion trying to contact the company, as the sales guy TOM who wrote the estimates apparently shares the company cell phone with the crew chief TOMAS, although whomever had the phone did respond. There was also some confusion in email replies and with the office staff, who called to ask why the fence work was postponed when I had actually been waiting to hear when we could schedule the work. I found it best to communicate directly via phone (call or text) - and made a list of questions to address in person, rather than over email. Once they heard we were ready to go, they said they could start in 2 days - and they did, and got it done right before the first deep freeze - and the work took only 2 days to complete. It looks great and the all new cedar fence and posts smell nice, too!! read more

Company came out talked to my wife to get processes of where fence was going. On my scheduled day Thomas the owner did not have material no call saying they are not coming. They cancelled a second time cause it rained day before I get you can't put concrete down while wet but it was sunny and 80 all day he could have came in afternoon. Finally come out to do job my wife had to go to doctor for hurting ankle and these guys had no ida where fence was supposed to start. I called they guy my wife went over the plans with asked him to come out he said he wasn't coming to talk to them. They should have had drawings ready the guy who talked to my wife should have showed up. I ended up requesting a refund for deposit hopefully I don't have issues with that part of dealing with this company. read more

Our association just had a border fence installed. As an associaton, passing a motion, collecting money for special projects, etc - takes a while. In our research phase Tomas gave us the best pricing quote. By the time we collected money and were ready to start (10 months later) Tomas honored that quote for us. Similar quotes for the work were 15% higher. On install day, the team arrived 30 minutes early. The team was professional, courteous, and worked an entire day without a break. Impressive group of guys with an incredible work ethic. They returned on Saturday and finished the remainder of the fence and the cleanup. Hats off to Tomas and his crew. These guys also came out to give us an estimate. The guy was about 30 minutes late, but he did drive all the way from Evanston. The day after he came to look at our yard, he sent a detailed digital drawing that showed the dimensions of our yard, and where the gates would go etc. This was pretty impressive and being a detailed oriented person, I loved this. Their quote was $1500 more than another place so needless to say we didn't go with these guys, even if we are trying to support local businesses. But maybe they can match an equivalent quote? I got the fence installed through this company little over a month ago I spoke to the owner Tomas who comes out for estimate and specifically told about issues with the gate which sometimes are not aligned properly before we go ahead with the project and also stressed about the warranty on labor work. I was told by him that they will provide 60 days of any work which was not properly done which I do have in my email from the company. So long story short I needed some adjustment done after the work was done as the owner doesn't come out to review how the work was performed I kept on calling the office where the lady answers the phone and kept giving me run around that he will come next week, he is not in town, she had scheduled me for inspection, after calling so many times they stopped answering the phone it would go on message. This guy is a CROOK and LIAR he gets people to believe that he is a man of his word and will take care of the issues pertaining the job but as soon as the job gets done he is nowhere to be found. We had 3 fence posts that needed to be replaced. I made an appointment to get an estimate - they didn't show up and they didn't call. I tried again and made a 2nd appointment - they didn't show up and they didn't call. I tried a 3rd time - they came, gave me a reasonable estimate and scheduled a time to do the work 1 month out. I called the day before to confirm and we were on the schedule, but they never showed up and never called to say they couldn't make it. I called Estrada Fences - they came to give me an estimate within the hour and finished the work the next day! read more

They did not show up for two consecutive appointments. They did not call, text, or email letting us know they were not showing up. I recently used Family Fences to have a cedar fence installed. Its been my experience that contractors in general are very flaky. They rarely show up on time and customer service is not their strong suit. Perfect example, I tried to get an estimate from SP Fence as in Carol Stream. SP told me it'd take about a week for the estimator to show up. On the morning of our appointment, I get a call from the woman at SP who set up the initial appointment that they don't service my area because of distance. Why couldn't they tell me that before the day of our appointment so I didn't have to block off my morning?? Anyways, I was impressed with the service provided by Family Fences. As the previous review mentioned, they were prompt. Said they would be at the house for the initial estimate in the morning and they were there. Said the fence would take 2 days to install and it did. When I sent an email, they responded within 24 hours. Initially, I had gone back and forth with them to make some changes to my initial request. They accommodated with revised drafts within 24 hours. There are some minor issues with the fence. For example, they installed a gate at our deck so our dog couldn't get out but one of the hinges was screwed on too high so part of the hinge is sticking out over the top rail of the gate. Overall, however, I am happy with the way the fence looks and the service provided by Family Fences. I would recommend them. I will update my post if anything changes with the fence install. read more

Here is my experience with Family Fences. Jim Kelly comes out to measure and look at the property. He says he will email me an estimate. A week later and no estimate. I call him to ask for the quote he lies and says he's waiting for pricing on one section of the fence. Another week later and still nothing from Jim. I call him again and this time get voicemail. I leave a message and no response. A few days later I leave him another voicemail again no response. I have no idea how their workmanship is because I can't even get them to give me a quote. Family Fences stood out in our Evanston neighborhood. We are very happy with our new fence, it is exactly what we wanted and they even dog proofed it for our dog that digs out. I had Thomas out to bid to fix my fence. They came out promptly and his estimate was $400 less than The guy on 41. (and soon you'll know why) Basically Thomas thinks that if a fence is standing, then it is fixed. I didn't check each post but took Thomas at his word that he would fix it as promised. 6 weeks later I'm in my yard and notice there are several sections of fence wobbly, several posts still rotten at the bottom and a gate that when opened, feels like the whole section will come down. Thomas came back and told me it was fine, it didn't need to be solid. He gave me another estimate for $400 more dollars to basically finish the job he was originally supposed to do. After calling several days in a row he agreed to come back once again and just reiterated that he was going to charge us more money to do the repairs. It's been 10 days with no word from Thomas. I would NEVER recommend them. It's too bad, if they had done a decent job we'll need a new fence in a few years and I would have used them. read more

I initially choose Tomas for a quote because he did work with my brother in law who is a contractor and I trust his opinion. Family Fences quote came in higher than the other quotes I was getting but he gave me this piece of advice...."make sure those companies use the right type of screws so that they don't bleed on your fence and make it unattractive". I appreciated that tip and wound up going with his higher quote because of that good advice. He did the work (a 25' section of wooden fence) and did a very nice and clean job. About 6 months later, I started to see black marks bleeding below every single screw they put in. I called him, and he said that he'll have to call the manufacture and he always uses the correct screws. I told him do whatever you need to do, but the ONLY reason I hired you was because you said your nails don't bleed so I expect you to take care of this. He sent his guys back to scrub off all of the black, but that didn't fix the problem as it would continue to bleed over time. Next he came out to replace all of the screws to the CORRECT ones that don't bleed. I appreciated that, but I still had marks on my fence below every screw. Tomas was now getting more difficult to get a hold of and return my calls. Finally he sent a guy over to power wash the fence where the marks were. Well, that looked ridiculous because every place there was a screw, there was now a clean circle of wood and it looked polka dotted now. After numerous attempts to contact Tomas (because he was VERY slow to get back to me if he did at all) I had to have my BIL contact him for me as I knew Tomas would pick up the phone if he called. He finally agreed to replace the wood panels that looked horrible and replace them with the correct screws this time. He gave me attitude every single time I talked to him towards the end. I kept reminding him that the only reason I went with his higher quote was because of his warning about other companies using screws that bled...and then he turned around and used bleeding screws. I wouldn't recommend this company for fence work in the future and I told the same thing to my contractor brother in law. read more

Horrible experience with this company. We originally chose them because their prices were significantly lower than Fence Works, but in retrospect, we should have paid extra for the more reputable company. It took numerous attempts with Family Fences to schedule the repair, and they ended up coming 4 hours later than scheduled. Once there, they failed to complete the work, including repairs I specifically mentioned to the workers. They failed to clean-up their work areas and left dirt, cement remnants and used screws littered over our walkways. They then took weeks before returning to remedy their mistakes, and only came after continued prodding. Finally, their repairs were shoddy and incorrect. For example, when they replaced a fence post they failed to replace the decorative cap on the post. They returned and added a pine fence post cap rather than a cedar one to match the post, and they failed to nail the cap to the post--it just sits there capped around the post! Avoid them and pay more for a better company. read more

I replaced a chainlink fence with this company. It was scheduled to be done 3 weeks after the person came out to give me an estimate. I had nothing in writing until I requested it a week before the job. My previous fence was 4 feet and against a concrete slab which had it secure. The new fence was placed several inched from the concrete slab and the bottom was loose allowing me to get my foot under the loose fence. The upright poles had rust on them. To rectify the job a pole was placed at the bottom of the fence and one pole was spray painted with a matt Finnish and the other partially spray painted. It looks so bad with everything else shinny and 1.5 poles matt painted. Some other points to note, the job was supposed to take 2 - 3 hours. The team was at my house for a whole day as they did not have all the materials available. They also came a day later then originally communicated. Besides for not being satisfied, I have a very ugly mismatching fence. The "family owned" business should be embarrassed!!! read more

Family fence is highly unprofessional and fraud company. We wanted to install a vinyl fence in our backyard. Got a estimate from Jim and started the work. They did not map out electrical utility service before work beings. Its owner Thomas is highly unprofessional person and don't care, have its worker to start work with high voltage electric lines not being mapped out. They broke the sprinkler system. Next day they were supposed to work but never showed up. Next time when they were supposed to work different guys showed up who did not have any clue of what was going on. On calling Thomas he said he will sent same crew from other work site. They were installing highly crooked fence with large variation of size of board which were not evenly measured and lot of gaps from below. They filled holes of post with concrete till top overflowing and won't even make it even from sides. Height of fence was not also as promised. When asked to fix Thomas said that's how they are going to do and that's it. We told them take away the fence and cut some money from advance and return rest. Now Thomas said ok and Jim will give partial refund check. There after Thomas won't call back for few days and Jim say it is out of his hand and we only have to talk to Thomas. Jim talks too big when he comes to give estimates about Thomas that family fence is the one that dig deep holes and use steel post and screws but please don't believe them they are big time cheaters they won't mean what they say they just wait for contract to be signed and then they show there true colors. Then I received a demand notice from attorney threating to put Mechanic's Lien our house. Thomas attorney would not call back to our attorney. Our attorney tried many times to contact Thomas attorney and left so many messages they secretary would take messages but attorney would never reply any message. They play games like this so that we get frustrated and decides to just give them money they are demanding they don't care as its our property and our house. We decided to get out of the contract by paying part of the balance as was demanded in attorney letter. We tried to hire other people to complete the job but no one would agree to do. We called so many peoples at- least 10 different companies they all said we "Don't want to put our foot in this dirty and unprofessional job" done by somebody else and spoil there company name. I contacted Thomas to finish the work when we called him he came and told us that "yes i know that nobody will finish this job" he demanded lot more than what was in contract and wanted to be given as cashiers check in advance before they start work and said that we cannot tell him or his workers anything when they are working they are going to do there job as they want. We did agree because we don't have any option left our yard was already ruined with patches of big gaps of missing grass its our new home and we don't have any words to describe what they have don't to our property. Thomas promised to come on certain day and time to do the job and we agreed to pay money. He never showed up and did not pick up the phone and never call back.
