I called David at American Home Fence when the gate fell off on my old chain link fence. He gave me a quote (that was less than half of what another company quoted). He fixed my old gate in his workshop, and repaired the metal post with a sleeve. Other companies had said I needed a new gate, new post and cement work. All that new metal would have really stuck out as shiny and pristine since my old fence is solid but rusty and probably over 50 years old. Sometimes you don't want new ... you just want what you have to function properly, keep the vintage look, and keep your dogs in your yard safely. At long last, the job is done. The workmanship is of fine quality even if it was not executed in the most efficient manner (deposit in November '21, post installation in July '22, panel came together in 2 visits in October '22). I would rate higher on the quality of the actual work but will hold my rating in the middle given the 11 mos. it took to install a 6x8 cedar and steel panel gate with a drop pin. I feel like David tried to mitigate my extreme irritation in the final bill and I appreciate that gesture, it's been a tough couple years for everybody. If there is another time for fence work at my home and I opt to call American Home Fence, I'll be very careful to ensure we have an unflinching mutual understanding of acceptable timelines. read more

Scheduled visit for estimate on 4/25. Estimate sent 5/9 with estimated start mid-June. No work/contact as of June 9. . No calls answered, voicemail full. Had to text to get a reply. June 24, call/text again. Calls back end of month and says he can start "early in the week after the July 4 weekend" I say,"OK so Tuesday or Wednesday then?" He reply: "Probably Thursday" Ends up starting work on 7/11. A week later 7/18, still not finished. Finally finished 7/21 and would not leave keys for gate until final payment received. David needs to learn how to delete voicemails and call customers. He also needs to learn better how to schedule his time. The work is fine, but WAAAAYY off of his estimated timeline. I wish I had read Derek's review above and taken it to heart. We wanted to use someone local, as we live in Jefferson Park. David gave us a good quote in line with others for a wrought iron, bar-stock gate. We signed a contract and gave him a deposit on 1/7/18/ I asked how long it would take, he said, "a couple of weeks". It is now March 16, 2018. All contact has been initiated by me. He has offered no explanation, no excuse, and no timeline other than (last Tuesday) saying he could do it, "the early part of next week" (meaning 3/12-14). Sorely disappointed. You know...every "bad" review of these guys I see on here is from people whining about how long it took or that there were delays or even one guy crying because they didn't respond to his email fast enough (seriously...you have nothing better to do with your time then write a bad review because of that?? Email another company and get on with your life. Do we really need to be "warned" about slow email response?). We had a fence installed by David last spring and we are very happy with it! Did it get installed on exactly the date he said it would? I really don't remember. If there was a delay, it was minimal and I didn't freak out about it. Things happen. This is a small company is owned/run by a regular guy just trying to make a living. If you need it installed tomorrow or on the exact date you're hoping for, try a larger company with dozens of installers and enjoy paying 25-50% more. If you want a quality fence at a more than competitive price installed in a manner as timely as possible, give them a call...or send an email. I used American Home Fence for a rear alley gate and a gangway gate. Communicating with David was extremely trying, once he received our down payment he was difficult to get a hold of. In the middle of the job he disappeared and didn't even bother to tell me and I was on the job site. Fast forward to less than 1 year later and I have emailed, texted, and called him over a dozen times to repair a flaw in one of his welds on the alley gate. We have used David and team 2 in the past two years. We did the fence one one side of yard last year and the other side this year. The work performed by David and his crew is absolutely awesome. Though I will agree with other reviewers that communication is not David's strong suit...building beautiful quality fences is. As the customer, you will need to follow-up on voice or email messages and sometimes "15 minutes" is closer to 45 minutes. It can be annoying but the prices compared to other companies that I got estimates from last year such as Freeman Fence and Top Line Fence were much more in line with our budget and the end results are great. His crew is very respectful and clean up the materials and mess really well. Plus, we even got to keep some of the cedar cutoffs from the project for our firepit. I would recommend his work to anyone, just with the caveat that follow-up is required. read more

I thought he was going to show up with some pre-fab stuff, but instead built just about everything from scratch. It has held up beautifully throughout the fall and a difficult winter.
