Hidden gem of a place. The in-house, scratch made food is fantastic and are traditional dishes from the Balkans. Some of the best I've ever had. My friend and I got there 30 minutes before closing. They were sold out of everything for the day but the owners made us fresh food regardless of it taking 25 minutes to do so. It's also a small convenience store selling various Eastern Europe snacks, drinks, etc.

We went to Family Grocery Store because I had a craving for cevapi which I have not had for 29 years. The food was delicious! The staff was very friendly. The grocery store has a variety of items that you will not find at PNS or Piggly Wiggly. The restaurant area is very clean. If you want to try some delicious food and shop for cool groceries this is your spot.

The Burek is amazing, that's fuc#ing delicious, tasty moist meat and onions inside nice dough.

There was a lot of pissed off people at my work today after they saw and smelled the food we had from here for lunch today. I selected a small group of seven people from the top store manager to the lowest employee to try the food here for the first time with me for today's lunch, wow everyone absolutely just loved the food. Those who were left out don't understand that I have a job to do and I can't walk the building to invite 50 people personally and bum rush a small business with a huge order on the spot. I devised a sinister plan to talk my boss into us getting two different lunches and splitting them because I wanted the Cevapi but I wanted to try the meat stuffed Burek, he fell for it and we were both super happy with our lunch. The meat stuffed Burek was amazing, probably better if eaten fresh in the store. Burek has a couple different styles of making them and they basically do the dough rope style, roll the meat inside the dough and wrap it around it self, see my picture. The dough was very good/tasty with a bagel like chew/dense ness to it is best how to describe it. The meat filling was moist/tasty with an onion flavored meat loaf taste to it from the onions and meat filling. I'm so glad the meat was different from the Cevapi meat in the sausages, dam this is a toss up between the two dishes because they are both very good and I have made a pact with my boss to do the 50/50 split when we go here. If you have never had a meat stuffed Burek and would like to try one from an authentic family cranking out authentic Serbian food than give this place a try, even the picky eater food fu%k at work who refused to get in on lunch said it was good after given a sample of the Cevapi. This is one of those Milwaukee's best kept food secrets for sure.

Amazing Serbian food you must try at Family Grocery Store - flavorful Meat Burek (top) and juicy Ćevapi (bottom).

Have you eaten here? If not, you should. The Ćevapi is to die for. Served simply with bread, chopped onions and a dollop of sour cream, it was the smell that signaled it was going to be good. The meat is perfectly seasoned and JUICY every bite, beginning to end. The owner bakes her own bread daily and when served with the Ćevapi, it's satisfyingly toasted in places and and soaks up some of the amazing juices from the meat. Fluffy without being too airy and a nice chew that taste like a really good cracker when toasted. The dish comes with 9-10 pieces of meat and was deceptively satisfying, even for a hungry eater. The second thing we tried was the Meat Burek. Again, well seasoned meat and spices nestled between soft somewhat bready homemade dough. The dough wasn't thin and flaky like phyllo dough (what the interwebs says its supposed to be) but the taste of it made you not care about that little detail. Moist and chewy more akin to bread, with nicely crisp and toasted golden brown edges gave it texture. Our pie was about an inch thick and about ten inches long and could easily feed two. Both dishes were very meat-centric and we bought a pickled salad from the grocery store portion to round out our meal. Ordering does take a little courage if you're shy, as there isn't an obvious menu, like in a restaurant. They have an open face letter board titled "GRILL" and then a list of dishes in serbian - there are also laminated printouts of what the food looks like (super helpful if you're a first timer). We asked if the grill was open, received a somewhat curt "of course" then bit the bullet and asked to put in an order. There are tables inside an outside to eat, and you can buy a cold drink from the coolers inside the grocery store portion. If you're a first timer, go by the pictures and order that way. Don't let the curtness dissuade you from ordering. The owners are very nice, warm, helpful people that take pride in their food. How good the food is evidenced by the constant stream of outgoing orders we saw as we waited and ate our food onsite. Would definitely go here again.

There were several servers hanging around and it wasn't clear where I could order. Sat at the counter and was ignored for 5 min. The server came over and told me to go to the deli area. It was a challenge to understand the clerk. A quart and pint of soup with a bagel and lox was $40. While I waited i read recent reviews and was alarmed. What happened to the best Jewish deli in our area? The lox tasted very fishy, like smoked fish. Unlike any lox I'd ever eaten. I asked for capers and regretted it; there were so many and with only the tiniest shmear of cream cheese, it was inedible. Too salty to be edible. The bagel was ok, but couldn't eat much of it. The chicken soup with mishmosh also disappointed. The lid was swimming in grease. I discarded it carefully. There was 1 matzo ball (ok), tons of noodles (meh) rice (ugh - underdone and inedible) and a kreplach ( I had to spit it out - filling was rancid and sour). The broth was tasteless and unseasoned. What happened to Benji's? So sad.

He welcomed us and thanked us repeatedly for choosing them as he's aware consumers have many places to choose from. He spent a lot of time with us talking about the different varieties and cuts of meat. Gave tips on how to prepare items we bought. Told us all about their "specials". Never felt rushed even though the store was busy. In the bakery area he recommended to get the cinnamon roll and oh my it was the best one I ever had. We also got cookies and cheesecake and both were fantastic as well. The meats we got were of great quality. We will definitely go back.

The only crime here is that this place isn't a chain and it's miles away from me. Our waitress was amazing, the vibes were perfect, everything felt intentional in the best way. Most of those spots only open for dinner, so I was thrilled to find that Bavette La Boucherie now serves lunch. My friend, a local, told me the restaurant originally began as a butcher shop. While that's no longer the case, the space still pays tribute to its roots -- shelves lined with kitchen knick-knacks, butcher-block counters, and a display of local provisions that hint at its past. Chef-owner Karen Bell leads the way here, and you can feel her touch throughout -- from the creative menu to the casual-elegant vibe. The décor blends exposed brick and warm wood with soft light and a friendly hum from the open kitchen. Our server, Matthew R., had only been with Bavette a couple of weeks, but his background in restaurant management showed. He was knowledgeable, attentive, and offered great suggestions. Before our sandwiches arrived, we shared a cup of pork and tomatillo pozole topped with cabbage slaw and a dollop of sour cream. It was piping hot, bright, and deeply flavorful -- the kind of starter that makes you stop talking for a minute just to enjoy the next spoonful. Having read rave reviews of the Korean steak au jus, I nearly ordered it, but Matthew suggested the roast-beef with cheddar since I'm not a big lunch eater. Excellent call. The sandwich was divine -- tender, flavorful beef layered with melted cheddar on a crisp, perfectly toasted roll. The beef-fat fries had great depth of flavor, though I'd love them even more if they were twice-cooked for that extra crunch. Being more of a gin or vodka drinker, I couldn't resist the Gin Old Fashioned on the cocktail list. It was delicious -- smooth, aromatic, and balanced enough that I happily ordered a second. Great food, warm service, and a welcoming atmosphere. Bavette La Boucherie is a gem I can't wait to revisit.
