I ordered food from Benji's at lunchtime recently because I wanted to get some corned beef for my BF on St. Patrick's Day. I tried a tuna melt, having been underwhelmed by a breakfast experience on a prior visit and since I don't eat meat. the sandwich was good and I enjoyed the challah bread until about halfway through when I hit a fishy bite and was put off. The accompanying fries were very good. BF really enjoyed his Reuben, which was filling and meaty - thus the 4 stars. I'm waiting for a winner from Benji's, but as a vegetarian, I might be waiting a long time. read more

So sad. This is not the benji's I've loved and eaten at for 30+ years. It was a snowy Dec 30th and I stopped in to pick up some chicken soup for a sick friend. There were several servers hanging around and it wasn't clear where I could order. Sat at the counter and was ignored for 5 min. The server came over and told me to go to the deli area. It was a challenge to understand the clerk. A quart and pint of soup with a bagel and lox was $40. While I waited i read recent reviews and was alarmed. What happened to the best Jewish deli in our area? The lox tasted very fishy, like smoked fish. Unlike any lox I'd ever eaten. I asked for capers and regretted it; there were so many and with only the tiniest shmear of cream cheese, it was inedible. Too salty to be edible. The bagel was ok, but couldn't eat much of it. The chicken soup with mishmosh also disappointed. The lid was swimming in grease. I discarded it carefully. There was 1 matzo ball (ok), tons of noodles (meh) rice (ugh - underdone and inedible) and a kreplach ( I had to spit it out - filling was rancid and sour). The broth was tasteless and unseasoned. Friday, August 2025: Unfortunately, it's come to the point where I'm giving Benji's another one-star. Their food has always been hit or miss for me and today's lunch with definitely a "miss". While I liked my tuna salad, the pickle that came with my entree was rancid (my friend's was also rancid). The carrot cake we ordered for dessert tasted like it came from a local grocery store. The topping didn't taste like cream cheese, it tasted like cheap quality sugar frosting. And to top it off, I purchased three egg bagels to take home, all which had mold on them (see photos for reference). First off let me tell you what I didn't like. I ordered a coke and it came in a huge cup, no complaints there, but oddly enough the coke tasted like a Pepsi. No big deal, because I also like Pepsi, it just seemed odd. My wife ordered a cup of mushroom barley soup, it was excellent, but it was overpriced for what you got. For the cost $6.30, it should have been a bowl instead of a cup. My wife ordered the turkey/corn beef combo with coleslaw which she said was very good. I ordered the Benji half a pound corn beef sandwich with coleslaw and I added French fries which we shared. The fries were better than I thought they would be and my sandwich was very good. Our total bill was $71.00, that included the tip, so this place is not cheap, but it is the holidays and we sort of splurged besides i had a taste for a corn beef sandwich. read more

The waitress was pleasant enough, unfortunately the same can't be said about the Benji Ruben. I ordered the 1/2 and was very disappointed. I really wanted the pastrami but when I found out that it was not made there, that it was deli pastrami I passed. I did sample some but would have been disappointed with it too. The food is alright but the waitress (the name on my receipt says her name was Janet S.) is so incredibly rude, it actually left me in shock how boldly hostile she was. Janet started making sarcastic comments at me like "I'm not hard to understand I don't know what your problem is" because I could not understand her since she was speaking way too fast, and mocking me with "others seem to be paying more attention, maybe you should too" when someone else at my table was able to better understand her. The food was alright but nothing special. I was very unhappy with Janet so I gave her a slightly below average tip (looking back it should've been zero, but it was 15% for anyone wondering), and instead of just keeping her mouth shut, she loudly exclaimed "Wow, what a cheapskate!" I was in such shock I didn't even know what to say back, so I just got up and left without saying anything. Stopped in on my way through for a healthier alternative to fast food. Man at the counter was very nice and gave me his recommendation but I just got a turkey sandwich with coleslaw. I have eaten Corned Beef Sandwiches in a lot of places from L.A. to N.Y. Benji's is simply fantastic. I ordered a plain corned beef on rye to be able to judge the cb. Wow, so moist, tender and not fatty. Great flavor, spot on. Rye bread was also simply perfect. Squeeze bottle of brown mustard was very handy. Also enjoyed the potato salad. Not mushy. Bright creamy dressing with a nice crunch of small cut veggies. Cup of beef barley mushroom soup was pricey, but hard to complain given it was so tasty. There are tables and a lunch counter. Not fancy, but comfortable and clean. Only negative is that there is not a lot of parking. read more

Delivery presentation wasn't first class. For the price of the sandwiches I kinda expected better first impressions. But the food got here fine and the fries were still crispy and the bread wasn't soggy! Potato salad was ok, but the fries were amazing. Hear-O Israel ($16.25) was packed full with meats and kicking flavors. Not a fan of rye bread, I asked for a sub with challah bread, and this is a delicious bread. They weren't kidding about half a pound of meats - but it was a tad on the salty side because of it. Some fresh veggies might have mitigated it. Not so Italian Italian Beef ($14.99) - used pepper beef... which was also a tad on the salty side. I think I'll stick with actual Italian Beef next time. So although I've been coming to Benji's on a periodic basis for many years, I didn't enjoy it as much as I used to. Not because they've changed - maybe because they haven't changed. It's the only place I know where we can get matzo ball soup - but now I realize it's not that exceptional. It's just (a rather salty) chicken broth with a large matzo ball. With my soup I had a 1/2 egg salad on challah. The egg salad was just ok. My daughter had a club sandwich (they do include bacon on the sandwich) and it was ridiculously tall. Not a skimpy sandwich but could have a more reasonable amount of Turkey. You are able to order 1/2 portions (for 1/2 the price) I guess she'll do that next time. I'm guessing we'll be back, but given there are so many interesting places I can go for a meal, Benji's won't be on the top of my list read more

My friend and I recently went out over the holiday season for some shopping, and she said she wanted to take me to her all-time favorite deli. When I learned that it was a mere 2ish miles from my house, I was excited! Benji's is an awesome deli, with a diner inside of it. You can get items to go from the deli counter, like bagels, meats, spreads, etc. We opted to sit in the diner, and were happy to snag two seats at the counter. We were greeted immediately, with menus, water, silverware, rye bread and butter, and a warm smile from our waitress. My friend said her favorite is their Reuben, but no matter what, I should have something that has their pastrami or corned beef in it. My mouth was watering and it was hard to decide! With matzo ball soup on the menu, potato pancakes, and pastrami sandwiches, how is a woman to choose? I was happy to see a specialty sandwich called "The Epiphany" which is exactly what it was for me - their classic pastrami sandwich between two potato pancakes instead of bread! We were ready to order, and the waitress asked if I wanted a half or whole sandwich, so I knew I was in for a feast, and decided to wait for another visit for the Matzo Ball soup! Sandwich was perfect, pastrami was to die for, and I 1000% would order it again. I can't wait to go back, and I want to share this place with others who don't know about it either! Benjis is an institution! I have been going to Benjis for years, not only because I grew up in Shorewood and live close by so it is convenient, but also (and more so) because it is just a really great place and I am always happy to introduce family and friends to it. The menu has plenty of options to satisfy your hunger needs, but it's all your typical diner foods. You want eggs? They've got eggs. You want soup? They've got soup! You want pancakes? A sandwich? A hot dog? Steak? Salmon? Chili? A salad? Oatmeal? Cake? They've got it all! I'd recommend the matzo ball soup. It hits the spot every time, especially if you aren't feeling well. If you are a meat lover then the Reuben is a good choice. I also love the mushroom soup. Bagel and lox is a go-to for me, I love the capers on top. The coleslaw is a great side for everything. If you are a potato lover, get the potato pancakes! And/or the potato salad. That stuff is dangerously delicious, it's definitely all that Mayo! Pro tip: if you are a true bagel fanatic, then you can pay for a sleeve of bagels and take them home to make your own sandwiches throughout the week! Pro tip #2: the pickles are so crunchy and good and you can always ask for more! They sometimes charge 25 cents for extras, which I guess makes sense when people like myself could eat 50 of them and not get full. Corned beef and all soups are delicious. I come here almost every time I'm in Milwaukee and it does not disappoint.

I used to eat here for lunch quite often. I'm lucky to have never had an issue with food quality or service. In face, the food is generally pretty good for your standard diner/greasy spoon. Nothing too spectacular, but certainly reliable and consistent in my experience. But one thing about Benji's is glaringly obvious. This place is completely, ridiculously, insanely overpriced. $15 for a hamburger? Not a hot dog on the menu for less than $12. Reubens and other similar sandwiches $18-20. The most basic of basic chicken breast sandwiches for $15. Bagel and Lox, $22. It is crazy. It only slightly works because Benji's sits in the village of Shorewood where money is most definitely not an issue. I look around the restaurant now, and I see an aging, slightly dilapidated dining room and I smell a smell that simply doesn't compute with the prices on the menu. I love Benji's, but I can simply no longer afford to eat here anymore. I hope they can become more reasonable and find other ways to make up their deficits that don't include jacking up prices. read more

I know Benji's has been around for a long time and a lot of people love it...but I'm not one of them. I live nearby and have given it several tries. First, the restaurant is ugly, old and unappealing inside. The staff is hit or miss, frequently miss. The hours are very limited. The prices for what you get are very high. If you are not familiar, be aware THE CHICKEN SOUP DOESN'T CONTAIN CHICKEN!!! I found this out after paying $12 for a pint of broth (over salted, watery broth mind you - not even a hearty, tasty broth) with a cup of white rice. I Could make this at home for about $1. This place has been on my list for a long time and I finally stopped by because I do like a nice pastrami on rye. The place is not what I expected because it's in the back of a strip mall and it can't be seen from the street except for the sign. The place is kind of old school looking with the lunch counter and stationary round stools with booths and tables. It has the old school white letter menu board with glass coolers as you walk in, the paint colors and track lighting kind of lift it out of how dated it looks. I would have the simple pastrami on rye with mustard that comes with a pickle and choice of side which was potato salad. I envisioned this NY style stacked meat sandwich which this was not and not as impressive as my mind was thinking, it was just smaller than I was thinking. The pastrami was not chunky hand carved looking but uniformly sliced and super lean with no fat, unlike that other Milwaukee famous deli that served me a fat sandwich. The rye bread was that great fresh kind with the chewy pull to the crust. The warm pastrami sandwich was pretty good and hit the spot. The potato salad was made with baby reds that were cooked perfect, not mush and not hard which was chilled perfect because room temp potato salad s#cks. The chilled pickle is always the icing on the cake with a good sandwich to me. Overall I had a way better experience at this deli than that other Milwaukee favorite who had all kinds of excuses as to how my sandwich had so much fat that I dubbed it the fat sandwich in my review. I would definitely come back here and get the Ruben or the Israel as my next sandwich. read more

My sister and I walked here for some family bonding time since it is only 2 blocks from her apartment. Atmosphere: Old school diner divey feel. It is a tight fit in here-almost had a family take my head off by trying to get a booster chair over my head to their table. To the right when you walk in is a waiting area/deli section and to the left is the dining area. Service: Friendly, fast and funny. The dish I ordered, the kitchen missed an ingredient, and the response of the waitress was "I'm going to kill those idiots". Uhhhhh what? They must really love each other their if they talk about one another like this. Food: BRUNCH/BREAKFAST ALLLLLLLL DAY ON THE WEEKEND. Yay Yay Yayyyy! I ordered the roast benedict. They have the best hollandaise sauce I've tasted-ever. I've probably ordered a version of eggs benedict at 50 different restaurants over the years and they killed that sauce. The shredded beef roast was tender and flavorful as all get out. Eggs were poached perfectly. I seriously love the food-why can't there be something this amazing where I live? (insert extensive whining here) Price: I gladly will fork out my cash for the quality and quantity you get.
