1/2 Order: Hoppel Poppel and a Dr. Browns - Black Cherry. Reuben Sammy in the upper right. Kiss the chef!

I've been coming to Benji's for over 30yrs maybe longer. It was a childhood/family staple and still is. No visit is complete for me without a Dr. Browns soda, matza ball soup and Hopple Popple. Super Hopple Popple to be exact. Every.Time. Please don't ever change.

Stopped in on my way through for a healthier alternative to fast food. Man at the counter was very nice and gave me his recommendation but I just got a turkey sandwich with coleslaw. The food was ready in 2 minutes even with all of the tables full and the size of the sandwich was almost as impressive as its speed being made.

I have eaten Corned Beef Sandwiches in a lot of places from L.A. to N.Y. Benji's is simply fantastic. I ordered a plain corned beef on rye to be able to judge the cb. Wow, so moist, tender and not fatty. Great flavor, spot on. Rye bread was also simply perfect. Squeeze bottle of brown mustard was very handy. Also enjoyed the potato salad. Not mushy. Bright creamy dressing with a nice crunch of small cut veggies. Cup of beef barley mushroom soup was pricey, but hard to complain given it was so tasty. There are tables and a lunch counter. Not fancy, but comfortable and clean. Only negative is that there is not a lot of parking.

The food looks like this when served.

Benji's is an old school soup and sandwich deli. It doesn't look like much, but the food is like your favorite grandma's home cooking. All natural ingredients made from scratch. My favorite is the Ruben sandwich... Check out the menu: http://www.benjisdeliandrestaurant.com

Delivery presentation wasn't first class. For the price of the sandwiches I kinda expected better first impressions. But the food got here fine and the fries were still crispy and the bread wasn't soggy! Potato salad was ok, but the fries were amazing. Hear-O Israel ($16.25) was packed full with meats and kicking flavors. Not a fan of rye bread, I asked for a sub with challah bread, and this is a delicious bread. They weren't kidding about half a pound of meats - but it was a tad on the salty side because of it. Some fresh veggies might have mitigated it. Not so Italian Italian Beef ($14.99) - used pepper beef... which was also a tad on the salty side. I think I'll stick with actual Italian Beef next time. Overall, great sandwiches, but with higher expectations in this price point.

What a fall from grace from the days when Benjy would carve a generous corned beef on a legitimate piece of rye bread. Now nearly $18.00 for a mere couple of thin pieces of beef on what seems like grocery store bread. Little wonder the lot and seats are empty at dinner time. Sad

The standard of food is not up to par as it was twenty years ago. The meat was dry and tasted more like processed food.

Most of those spots only open for dinner, so I was thrilled to find that Bavette La Boucherie now serves lunch. My friend, a local, told me the restaurant originally began as a butcher shop. While that's no longer the case, the space still pays tribute to its roots -- shelves lined with kitchen knick-knacks, butcher-block counters, and a display of local provisions that hint at its past. Chef-owner Karen Bell leads the way here, and you can feel her touch throughout -- from the creative menu to the casual-elegant vibe. The décor blends exposed brick and warm wood with soft light and a friendly hum from the open kitchen. Our server, Matthew R., had only been with Bavette a couple of weeks, but his background in restaurant management showed. He was knowledgeable, attentive, and offered great suggestions. Before our sandwiches arrived, we shared a cup of pork and tomatillo pozole topped with cabbage slaw and a dollop of sour cream. It was piping hot, bright, and deeply flavorful -- the kind of starter that makes you stop talking for a minute just to enjoy the next spoonful. Having read rave reviews of the Korean steak au jus, I nearly ordered it, but Matthew suggested the roast-beef with cheddar since I'm not a big lunch eater. Excellent call. The sandwich was divine -- tender, flavorful beef layered with melted cheddar on a crisp, perfectly toasted roll. The beef-fat fries had great depth of flavor, though I'd love them even more if they were twice-cooked for that extra crunch. Being more of a gin or vodka drinker, I couldn't resist the Gin Old Fashioned on the cocktail list. It was delicious -- smooth, aromatic, and balanced enough that I happily ordered a second. Great food, warm service, and a welcoming atmosphere. Bavette La Boucherie is a gem I can't wait to revisit.

Tons of toppings though! The sausage was really good too. Never being there but knowing they have cannoli (no dessert case seen), I asked what flavors and got a strange look like there must be only one flavor lol. Okay, I'll take whatever that one is! The man went into the back to fill it for me and I will say it was delicious and was I guess just a plain cream with maybe some vanilla. They aren't open very late so get there early if you want dinner. Like before 5pm. Several others came in to get sandwiches while we were there and said they are great. The deli looked amazing with meats that I have never seen before. I started with what looked like meat sticks because I'm a sucker for meat sticks. Next was homemade cheese and potato pierogis. On to the meat counter and I would sample 4-5 of 1/8 of a pound deli meats. While my first meat choice was being sliced an older blond woman would intervene with a nasty attitude and said no 1/8 of a pound because the minimum on deli meats is 3/4 of a pound and there is signs stating that I didn't notice ? Well I don't need 5 pounds of deli meat for sampling. Then I get what are we supposed with the meat we already sliced and I said I will buy it and was only .520 of a pound which was not their minimum quantity that they stated, I would have spent about $10 more in the deli if they didn't have a ridiculously unusual policy. I have been ordering deli meat most of my life and this is the first time I had to order a minimum quantity, am I in the twilight zone ??. The fact that older blond was so rigid about a minimum quantity and not willing to sell me deli meats that I requested is absolutely a giant fail at customer service. See my 5-star of American Family First Field, 4-star of Cargo Coffee East (in Madison), & 5-star of Indeed Brewing Company. Yet another 5-star experience in Milwaukee. On Saturday, September 4, 2021, my friend was interested in the science museum, but I was interested in seeing more variety of things in downtown Milwaukee. So, I dropped him off and did my own stuff that afternoon. One thing was stopping at the Milwaukee Public Market, which my friend from Arizona highly recommended. My friend really missed out on this one! Like the night before, I had cheese curds again here at West Allis! When in Rome, right?! Cheese curds were outstanding, which was the side to my also outstanding Muenster grilled cheese sandwich on buttery toasted sourdough. Of the 3 cheese curds I had in Milwaukee, all 3 of which were excellent, West Allis was the very best of 3 excellent choices. Cheese curds in Maryland (where I live) don't compare; see my 4-star review of Brew Belly in Olney, MD visited 2.5 months after Milwaukee trip written on 10/6/25; other aspects of that place were stronger, cheese curds were more of a 3-star (I was spoiled in Milwaukee), but still even those cheese curds were far superior to the worst date of 2021 at Brew Belly. The line at West Allis was long at lunchtime on that Saturday of Labor Day weekend, but the staff was efficient & cordial getting people through the line in reasonable time as well as getting the food quickly. I think I ate in an upstairs area of the market where there was some seating. If I was ever in Milwaukee again, I'd come back here, Brewers game if it timed well: Go Brew Crew!
